How to Safely Use a Fire Pit on a Patio or Deck

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a fire pit only outdoors, on a level, noncombustible surface, and at least 10 feet (3 meters) from anything that can burn. That means a properly prepared patio may be suitable when local rules and the appliance instructions allow it. A combustible wood deck is not an approved location under the cited NFPA guidance: NFPA specifically says to keep fire pits away from decks and deck railings. A spark screen, heat-resistant mat, paver, or other accessory does not make deck placement safe.

Before lighting, confirm the required clearances, fuel, ventilation, and extinguishing method in the current manufacturer instructions; check municipal or fire-department restrictions and obtain any required permit. Keep the fire attended, establish a three-foot safety zone, have a hose or fire extinguisher nearby, and extinguish the fire completely before leaving.

Can you put a fire pit on a deck?

Do not place a fire pit on a wood or other combustible deck. NFPA fire-pit guidance says to keep the appliance away from decks and deck railings. The same limitation applies when a product is advertised with a spark screen or when an accessory maker describes a mat as heat resistant. Those products may reduce a particular hazard, but they do not change the deck into a noncombustible, approved site.

Deck boards, framing, railings, furniture, siding and debris can ignite from direct heat, radiant heat, embers or a spilled fuel. A fire can also enter gaps between boards and continue burning where it is difficult to see or reach. A mat can conceal damage or trap heat, and a screen can contain some sparks without stopping heat transfer or a flame outside the bowl. Unless the current fire-pit instructions and the authority having jurisdiction expressly approve that exact deck installation, choose another location.

What to do instead

  • Move the fire pit to ground-level patio blocks, bricks, concrete or another level surface that will not catch fire.
  • Keep the appliance at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the house and every other combustible object, including the deck itself.
  • If the only available outdoor space is a deck, use the deck for seating and place the fire pit elsewhere, or do not use a fire pit there.
  • Ask the local fire department or municipal office about restrictions, seasonal bans and permits before buying or operating the appliance.

How far should a fire pit be from a house?

Maintain a minimum separation of 10 feet (3 meters) from anything that can burn. NFPA gives that distance for outdoor fire pits, and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) uses the same minimum from a home or other combustible material. Measure from the outside edge of the pit or its structure to the nearest combustible item, and use a greater distance if the manufacturer, local rule or site conditions require it.

The 10-foot zone is not limited to the wall directly behind the pit. Keep the pit away from siding, decks, deck railings, tents, grass and other vegetation, eaves, overhanging branches and overhead structures. Move outdoor cushions, umbrellas, firewood, paper, patio décor and other movable combustibles outside the zone before lighting. A roofed patio, pergola or screened enclosure may restrict ventilation and place fabric or framing above the flame; do not use the pit there unless the manufacturer and local authority specifically permit it.

Why the clearance matters

Flames and embers can rise, while radiant heat can ignite material that is not touching the bowl. Wind can carry sparks well beyond the pit. The 10-foot distance is a baseline, not a guarantee against every weather condition. Do not burn when strong or shifting winds can carry embers, or when wildfire danger is high. Follow any local air-quality, red-flag or burn-ban notice even if your pit is otherwise correctly placed.

What surface is safe for a fire pit?

Use a level, stable, noncombustible outdoor surface. NFPA lists patio blocks, bricks and concrete as examples. The surface should support the full appliance without rocking, remain clear of combustible mulch and vegetation, and allow you to walk around it without stepping over obstacles.

Prepare the site

  1. Choose an open outdoor area that meets the 10-foot clearance in every direction, including above the fire.
  2. Inspect the surface for cracks, loose blocks, standing water, grease, leaves and accumulated ash. Repair or clear problems before setup.
  3. Remove rocks, sticks, hoses, toys, cords and other trip hazards. Keep the approach and seating area well lit so someone carrying water can reach the pit safely.
  4. Set the pit exactly as the manufacturer shows, including its legs, burner, ventilation openings, lid and any required base. Do not place it on grass, soil covered with dry vegetation, artificial turf, a carpet, a wooden platform or another combustible surface.
  5. Arrange chairs outside the three-foot safety zone and maintain a clear route away from the fire.

Concrete can crack or spall under intense, uneven heat, especially when wet. Use the construction and clearance instructions supplied with the particular pit; do not assume that every concrete patio, paver system or outdoor tile has identical heat performance.

Check rules and the fire-pit instructions first

Fire-pit use may be limited by municipal ordinances, apartment or condominium rules, drought declarations, air-quality orders, wildfire restrictions or permit conditions. NFPA advises checking with the local fire department or municipality and obtaining a permit when required. The local rule can be stricter than the general 10-foot guidance, can prohibit wood smoke, or can ban open-flame appliances during certain weather.

  • Permitted fire-starting products and the exact shutdown or extinguishing sequence.
  • Whether a screen, lid or cover is required or allowed by local regulation.

Never improvise a conversion between wood, propane, natural gas, alcohol or another fuel. A bowl, burner or burner media designed for one fuel may become dangerously hot, leak or produce an uncontrolled flame when used with another.

Wood-burning fire pits: fuel and lighting

Choose and load the wood

NFPA recommends clean, dry hardwood seasoned for at least six months. Do not burn painted, pressure-treated, glued, laminated or construction scrap wood; coatings and binders can release hazardous smoke and may cause excessive sparks. Load only the amount stated in the manual. Keep logs inside the fire bowl and below any screen or rim intended to contain them.

Start the fire safely

  1. Place a commercial fire starter in the approved location and use it exactly as its label directs.
  2. Arrange a modest amount of dry kindling and hardwood so air can circulate. Keep your face, hands and loose clothing away from the ignition point.
  3. Light from the side with an extended-reach tool if the instructions permit it, then step back. Never lean over the bowl.
  4. If the fire does not catch, wait for the stated period and follow the manual’s relighting procedure. Do not add fuel to a smoldering or recently attempted ignition.

Never use gasoline, lighter fluid or another liquid accelerant to start or relight a wood fire. CPSC also warns never to add liquid fuel after attempting ignition. Vapors can flash back to the container and create a fireball. Keep a charged hose or suitable fire extinguisher close enough to reach without crossing the safety zone.

Gas fire pits: connection, operation and shutdown

Inspect the cylinder, hose, regulator, burner and fittings before each use. Do not operate a unit with a cracked hose, damaged connector, rusted cylinder, blocked burner openings or a smell of gas. Keep cylinders upright and outside in the location specified by the manual, away from heat and ignition sources; never store or use them in an enclosed room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify that every control is off before connecting the fuel source.
  2. Connect the approved cylinder or gas line and perform the leak test specified by the manufacturer. If you smell gas, hear hissing or see bubbles at a connection, turn the supply off, move away and follow the manual or emergency guidance; do not light the pit.
  3. Open the fuel supply only as directed, then ignite using the built-in igniter or the approved method. Never use gasoline, lighter fluid or an improvised torch.
  4. Watch the flame. A sudden change in color, height, sound or heat can indicate a blocked burner, wind problem or fuel fault. Turn the unit off and allow it to cool before investigating.
  5. After use, turn the burner controls off and shut off the fuel source as the instructions require. Let the appliance cool before covering, moving or storing it.

Gas appliances still require the same outdoor placement and 10-foot clearance. A gas flame produces less visible ash than a wood fire, but it can still ignite nearby material and can be blown toward combustible surfaces.

Keep people, clothing and pets outside the safety zone

Establish a three-foot safety zone around the fire and keep children and pets out of it. NFPA advises arranging chairs a safe distance away, never leaving the fire unattended and avoiding loose-fitting clothing that could ignite. Assign one responsible adult to watch the fire continuously; do not rely on a screen, automatic igniter or another person who is distracted by cooking, conversation or a phone.

  • Keep sleeves, scarves, blankets and hair away from the flame. Do not allow anyone to reach across the bowl.
  • Do not permit running, games or pet access near the pit.
  • Keep roasting tools, chairs and serving trays positioned so a person does not have to step over the fire.
  • Keep the hose or extinguisher accessible, but do not place it where heat can damage it or where someone must pass through the flame area to retrieve it.
  • Stop using the pit if wind increases, smoke blows toward people or buildings, embers escape the site, or anyone in the group cannot follow the safety rules.

What does a spark screen do?

A metal spark screen can help contain sparks, embers and ash from a wood-burning fire. USFA recommends a metal screen over wood-burning fires for that limited purpose, and NFPA advises checking local regulations about screens. Use only the screen designed or approved for the appliance, and place it according to the instructions.

A screen is not a substitute for the 10-foot clearance, an approved noncombustible surface, supervision or proper extinguishing. It does not make a deck acceptable, prevent radiant heat from damaging boards, stop all embers in windy conditions or authorize use under a roof. Do not touch or move a hot screen without the specified tool and protective equipment.

How to put out a fire pit safely

Wood-burning pit

  1. Stop adding wood well before you plan to leave. Allow the existing logs to burn down as the manual recommends.
  2. Use the manufacturer’s extinguishing method. If water is permitted, apply it slowly to the embers and ash to avoid a burst of steam and flying ash; stir with a long tool, then apply more water until hissing stops.
  3. Check the entire bowl, under the grate and around the base for glowing embers. A fire is not out merely because flames are no longer visible.
  4. Remain at the site until the pit and surrounding area are cool and no smoke or heat remains. Do not leave to cool overnight while embers are active.
  5. Once completely cool, transfer ashes to a dedicated metal container with a tight-fitting lid. Keep that container outdoors, away from the house, deck, vegetation, firewood and other combustibles.
  6. Never put warm ashes directly into a trash can, cardboard box, plastic bin or compost pile. Do not dump them onto soil, mulch or a wooded area.

Gas pit

  1. Turn the burner controls off and shut off the fuel source in the order specified by the manufacturer.
  2. Watch the appliance until the flame is fully extinguished. Do not assume that turning a control knob alone has isolated the fuel.
  3. Allow the bowl, burner and decorative media to cool completely before covering or handling them.
  4. If a flame will not shut off, a connection leaks or a cylinder becomes unusually hot, move people away and contact emergency services or the fuel supplier from a safe location.

Liquid-fuel tabletop pits: a serious warning

On December 19, 2024, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned consumers to stop using and dispose of fire pits that require pouring alcohol or another liquid fuel into an open container and igniting pooled fuel there. CPSC identified pool-fire and flame-jetting hazards, reported two deaths and at least 60 injuries since 2019, and said the products violate requirements in voluntary safety standard ASTM F3363-19.

Do not refill, relight or move a liquid-fuel appliance while it is burning, warm or suspected of containing vapor. If your pit uses the pooled-fuel design described in the CPSC alert, stop using it and follow the agency’s disposal or reporting directions rather than attempting a retrofit.

CPSC also warned on July 16, 2026, that consumers should stop using and dispose of Houswise tabletop fire pits identified as the Vesper, Altair, Quad and Astra models. The agency reported more than two dozen incident reports and seven injuries, including third-degree burns. Product warnings and recalls can change, so check the current CPSC notice and the identification details for any tabletop pit before use.

Common situations and the safe decision

Situation Safe decision Reason
Wood fire pit on a timber deck Do not use it there; move it to a level, noncombustible outdoor surface at least 10 feet from combustibles. NFPA guidance specifically says to keep fire pits away from decks and deck railings.
Fire pit on a concrete patio Potentially acceptable if the patio is level, the appliance instructions allow it, clearances are met and local rules permit it. Concrete is an example of a noncombustible surface, but the site still needs clearance and supervision.
Fire pit on patio blocks or bricks Potentially acceptable when stable, level, outdoors and separated from combustibles by at least 10 feet. NFPA lists patio blocks and bricks as examples of suitable surfaces.
Screen added to a deck installation Do not use the installation. A screen contains some sparks; it does not approve combustible decking or replace clearance.
Heat-resistant mat under a pit on a deck Do not treat the mat as permission to use the pit on the deck. The guidance does not establish that a mat makes combustible decking safe.
Windy or high-wildfire-risk day Do not light the pit; wait until conditions and local restrictions allow burning. Wind carries embers, and wildfire conditions increase the consequence of escape.

Pre-lighting checklist

  • Local restrictions, permits and burn bans have been checked.
  • The pit is outdoors, level and on patio blocks, bricks, concrete or another approved noncombustible surface.
  • At least 10 feet (3 meters) separates the pit from the home, deck, railings, siding, vegetation, tents, eaves, branches and other combustibles.
  • The manufacturer’s current instructions are available, and the fuel, clearances and ignition method match them.
  • The area is free of dry leaves, sticks, clutter and trip hazards, and the route is well lit.
  • A three-foot safety zone is marked by the arrangement of chairs and people.
  • Children, pets and loose clothing will remain away from the fire.
  • A hose or fire extinguisher is nearby and accessible.
  • For wood, only clean, dry hardwood seasoned at least six months and approved commercial starters are ready.
  • No gasoline, lighter fluid or pooled liquid fuel will be used.
  • Wind and wildfire conditions are acceptable.

What to do if something goes wrong

Embers leave the bowl

Tell everyone to move away, keep the fire attended and extinguish the escaping material if it is safe to do so. Check vegetation, the deck, roof edges and furniture for smoldering spots. If flames spread or you cannot control them immediately, call emergency services and leave the area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A person catches fire

Use the emergency response taught in your area, such as stopping, dropping and rolling, and call emergency services for serious burns. Do not apply ice, grease or household products to a burn; obtain professional medical advice.

A gas smell or uncontrolled flame appears

Do not operate switches, relight the burner or approach the connection. Move people away, shut off the supply only if it can be done without exposure, and contact emergency services or the fuel supplier from a safe location.

The fire appears out but ashes are warm

Continue cooling and monitoring. Keep the ashes in the pit until completely cold, then use the dedicated lidded metal container. Warm ash can conceal embers for hours.

Bottom line for patio and deck projects

A patio can host a fire pit only when the appliance is outdoors on a level, noncombustible surface, at least 10 feet from anything that can burn, and compliant with local rules and the manufacturer’s instructions. A deck is not made safe by a mat, screen or paver placed beneath the appliance; NFPA guidance calls for keeping fire pits away from decks and deck railings. Build or choose the fire area around those clearance and surface requirements, supervise every burn, and treat complete extinguishing and ash storage as part of the installation—not an afterthought.
