Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not build directly from an AI-generated plan. Treat it as draft design material, then have the complete drawing set checked, coordinated and accepted by the appropriately licensed architect or engineer for the project’s jurisdiction before permit submission or construction. A visual look, an AI code citation, a software flag report or a permit review does not transfer professional responsibility or prove that a design is safe.
The exact obligations depend on the site, building use, size, risk category and local law. The workflow below shows what an owner or project team should verify, what evidence to preserve and when to stop until a qualified professional resolves an issue.

What an AI-generated building plan is—and is not
An image, PDF or CAD/BIM file produced by an AI system is an output of a tool, not a professional certification. It may help explore room arrangements, produce an early concept or organize drafting work, but it can omit structural calculations, misread site data, cite the wrong code edition or show elements that cannot be built together.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) describes AI as “a design support tool—not a replacement for professional judgment.” Its guidance says architects remain accountable for work products, decisions and representations made with AI assistance, and calls for review and validation by qualified professionals. The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada likewise states that AI “does not replace the architect’s duty of care, professional judgment, ethical responsibility, or accountability for the work carried out under their supervision.”

No general accuracy percentage or universal failure rate has been established for AI-generated building plans. A government sandbox report from the Canton of Zurich describes permit-related prototypes and use cases, but it does not establish a performance benchmark that applies to every tool, building type or jurisdiction.
Start by defining the project and the governing jurisdiction
Before judging the drawing, write down the facts that determine which rules apply. The authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) may be a city or county building department, a state agency, a national regulator or another body. Confirm the following with the AHJ and the locally qualified design professional:
- Exact site address, parcel boundaries, survey and known easements.
- New construction, addition, alteration, change of use or repair.
- Occupancy or use, occupant load and whether the building is residential, commercial, industrial, institutional or mixed-use.
- Floor area, height, number of storeys, construction type and fire-protection features.
- Risk or project category, including whether higher-risk or special inspection rules apply.
- Adopted building, fire, energy, accessibility, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and zoning provisions, including their effective editions.
- Permit route, planning or zoning approvals, environmental requirements and utility or civil submissions.
- Disciplines that must be designed, signed, sealed, submitted or reviewed by licensed professionals.
Do not accept a code section copied by an AI system until the responsible professional confirms that it is the current provision for the site and project. Code names and numbering vary by country, state, province and municipality, and amendments can change the result.
Preserve the plan’s provenance and protect confidential information
Save the AI output before anyone edits it. Keep the original editable file, exported PDF, images, model or prompt history where available, and the date and time of each export. Record the tool name and version if known, the brief supplied to it, site measurements, survey data, occupancy assumptions and any information the model was asked to infer.
Maintain a simple change log showing every human edit, imported detail, substituted product and revised dimension. If the model filled a gap—such as soil bearing capacity, fire rating, climate zone or accessible route—label that value as an assumption rather than a fact.

AIA guidance calls for firm policies on privacy and confidentiality and warns against uploading confidential client or firm information to an unvetted AI system. Remove personal data, security-sensitive layouts and proprietary information unless the owner and professional team have approved the system and its data handling. A confidentiality breach cannot be repaired by later checking the drawing.
Check that the drawing set is complete before assessing its design
Use the current submittal checklist issued by the AHJ. A single attractive floor-plan image is not a permit-ready set. New York City Department of Buildings materials, for example, require complete construction drawings and identify scope, details, calculations, zoning and code references, general notes and dimensions as information needed for effective examination. Those requirements illustrate a principle, not a universal checklist; other authorities may demand different sheets and calculations.

- Cover sheet identifying the project, address, scope, drawing index, code basis and responsible professionals.
- Existing and proposed site or plot plans showing property lines, setbacks, north arrow, grades, adjacent conditions, utilities and access.
- Dimensioned floor plans for every level, roof and relevant reflected ceiling or equipment areas.
- Exterior elevations, building sections, wall or roof assemblies, fire-resistance ratings and material descriptions.
- Door, window, finish, hardware and equipment schedules where required.
- Details for stairs, guards, handrails, ramps, accessible elements, weatherproofing and other regulated construction.
Engineering and specialist information
- Structural plans, design criteria, calculations, foundation assumptions, framing, connections and lateral-load provisions.
- Mechanical, electrical and plumbing plans with equipment schedules, loads, distribution, controls and service information.
- Fire-protection, detection, alarm, egress and smoke-control information when applicable.
- Civil, drainage, storm-water, grading, geotechnical or environmental documents required for the site.
- Energy, accessibility, acoustic, hazardous-material or other specialist analyses required by local rules.
If a required sheet, calculation or note is missing, mark the set incomplete. Do not infer that an absent detail is “standard” or that an AI can safely fill it later.
Run an internal consistency and coordination review
Compare every view rather than reviewing sheets in isolation. A plan can look plausible while containing conflicts that make construction impossible or unsafe.
Geometry and dimensions
- Reconcile overall dimensions with room dimensions, wall thicknesses and stated areas.
- Check that grids, columns, bearing walls and foundations align from roof to ground.
- Verify that stairs, ramps, shafts, lifts and vertical penetrations line up in plans and sections.
- Confirm door swings, clear widths, turning spaces and egress paths are shown consistently.
- Compare elevations and sections with floor-to-floor heights, parapets, roof slopes and openings.
Schedules, notes and specifications
- Match every tagged door, window, finish, equipment item and detail reference to a schedule or drawing.
- Check that fire ratings, insulation values, glazing descriptions and product requirements do not conflict.
- Make sure general notes identify the same code edition, occupancy and construction type used in calculations.
- Trace revisions so a superseded detail is not left referenced on a current plan.
Building-system coordination
- Overlay structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire-protection layouts where applicable.
- Look for ducts, pipes, cable routes, beams, braces and access panels competing for the same space.
- Verify equipment clearances, maintenance access, intake and exhaust locations and roof penetrations.
- Check that penetrations through rated assemblies have a specified protection strategy.
- Confirm accessible routes remain usable after furniture, equipment and service zones are added.
These checks identify questions; they do not replace engineering analysis. A missing calculation, unexplained dimension conflict or unresolved system clash must go to the professional responsible for that discipline.

Verify the technical disciplines, not just the picture
Structure and ground conditions
Ask the structural engineer to confirm loads, load paths, foundation type, soil assumptions, wind, snow, seismic or other environmental actions, deflection limits, connections and temporary conditions. AI-generated member sizes or reinforcement are not evidence that a structure works. Where the design relies on a geotechnical report, survey or test, verify that the cited document is the actual project document and that its assumptions match the proposed work.
Fire and life safety
Have the responsible professional verify occupancy classification, occupant load, travel distance, exit number and width, fire separations, opening protection, alarm or suppression systems, emergency lighting and fire-department access. A rendered escape route does not establish compliance, and a permit examiner’s review is not a substitute for design responsibility.
Accessibility
Check the route from site arrival through entrances, rooms, sanitary facilities and required amenities. Verify slopes, landings, clearances, reach ranges, hardware and signage against the accessibility rules adopted at the site. Resolve conflicts between accessible clearances and structural or mechanical layouts before construction documents are issued.
Mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems
Confirm calculated loads, ventilation, equipment capacity, distribution, service size, emergency systems, drainage, venting, water protection and controls. Manufacturer requirements, utility standards and local amendments may be decisive. An AI-generated equipment label or schedule is only a lead until the licensed designer checks it.
Obtain the right professional review and approvals
Identify who is responsible for architecture, structure and each required specialist discipline. Ask each person whether they are licensed or registered for the project location, whether their practising certificate is current, what scope they are accepting and whether they can sign or seal the documents. Also confirm who will submit the application and who must answer review comments.

Singapore provides a clear example: building-plan approval submissions go through a “Qualified Person,” a registered architect or professional engineer holding a valid practising certificate. That route is Singapore-specific, but it demonstrates why an owner cannot assume that an unlicensed AI operator or drafter may submit plans.
In Ontario, the Building Code requires an architect or professional engineer to undertake general review of covered construction for conformity with permit-basis documents, subject to stated exceptions, and restricts who may perform that review when the work was designed by an architect or engineer. A construction-phase general review is a separate duty from checking the plans before construction begins.
Jurisdiction examples: what varies and what does not
| Place or regime | Illustrated requirement | What an owner should not assume |
|---|---|---|
| New York City | Permit applications require complete construction drawings. Department guidance identifies scope, details, calculations, zoning and code references, notes and dimensions; the registered design professional is the applicant of record for required submission information. | A partial AI drawing or visual review is enough to start formal examination. |
| Singapore | Approval submissions are made through a Qualified Person who is a registered architect or professional engineer with a valid practising certificate. | One global sign-off model applies everywhere. |
| Ontario | For covered buildings, an architect or professional engineer performs required general review of construction conformity with permit-basis documents, with stated exceptions and limits on eligible reviewers. | Preconstruction plan checking and construction-phase review are interchangeable. |
| Florida, 2026 | For single-trade plan reviews, a private provider may use an automated or software-based system for applicable codes when the statute’s authorization and certification conditions are met. | The provision authorizes general-purpose AI to design or certify every building plan. |
| England, higher-risk building work | Government guidance describes client and designer duties involving competence, specified approval information, change control and information management. | Rules for higher-risk work are a universal requirement for ordinary projects elsewhere. |
Check the current law, code edition and licensing rules for the actual site. These examples show different regulatory approaches; they do not create a portable approval method.

When comparing review support, use these criteria:
| Criterion | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Authority | Is the reviewer licensed or otherwise authorized in this jurisdiction, and can they sign, seal, submit or perform required general review? |
| Relevant competence | Have they handled this building type, construction method, risk category and discipline? |
| Scope | Does the service cover code analysis, structural calculations, coordination, completeness, or only automated rule checks? |
| Independence | Are conflicts disclosed, and is an independent review required by the owner, lender or authority? |
| Evidence and control | Will you receive dated comments, assumptions, marked-up drawings, calculations and a controlled revision record? |
| Turnaround and escalation | Who resolves a technical disagreement, and what happens when the tool cannot evaluate a condition? |
Do not describe a software report as equivalent to professional design responsibility or AHJ approval.
A practical review workflow from AI output to approved construction set
- Freeze the source set. Export and preserve the original AI files, prompt or brief, inputs, tool version and date. Label the set “unverified draft.”
- Define the project. Record site, scope, use, size, risk category, adopted codes, zoning and required permit route.
- Ask the AHJ for current requirements. Obtain the submission checklist and identify separate planning, fire, civil, energy, accessibility or utility reviews.
- Engage qualified professionals. Assign architectural, structural and specialist responsibilities, including who may sign, seal and submit.
- Check completeness. Compare the drawing index and calculations with the AHJ checklist. Stop if required information is missing.
- Coordinate the set. Reconcile dimensions, views, schedules, details and all applicable building systems.
- Validate assumptions and calculations. Replace inferred site, soil, load, product or code data with verified project information and professional analysis.
- Issue a controlled submission. Use a revision number and date, remove superseded sheets, and have the responsible professionals approve the package.
- Respond to comments. Track each AHJ comment to a drawing or calculation revision. Do not answer a technical comment with an unverified AI rewrite.
- Release only the approved set. Give contractors the identified permit-basis or construction set and retrieve obsolete copies.
- Manage construction changes. Route field conditions and owner changes to the responsible professional and AHJ when required. Never regenerate one sheet in isolation.
Recognize stop-work red flags
- The plan has no identifiable jurisdiction, code basis, responsible professional or revision date.
- Structural calculations, geotechnical information or load paths are absent where they are needed.
- Dimensions differ between plans, elevations, sections and schedules.
- Stairs, exits, accessible routes, fire separations or equipment clearances cannot be traced continuously.
- The AI cites a code edition that the AHJ does not adopt, or the citation cannot be verified.
- A reviewer offers only a visual approval without calculations, marked-up comments or a defined scope.
- The contractor is asked to build from a rendering, superseded sheet or “field-fix” instruction.
- Site conditions or owner changes differ from the assumptions on which the approved design was based.
Any of these conditions warrants a documented hold and escalation to the responsible professional and, where applicable, the AHJ.
Maintain records through construction
Keep the dated plan sets, assumptions, code basis, calculations, reviewer comments, professional credentials or approvals, AHJ correspondence and approval status in one controlled record. Note which documents were used for pricing, permit submission and construction.

When a change is proposed, record its reason, affected disciplines, revised calculations, professional review, authority notification and issue date. The construction team should be able to identify the current approved information at the workface. AIA’s accountability principle continues after permit issuance: the professional remains responsible for work products and representations made with AI assistance within their accepted scope.
What an architectural scale ruler can—and cannot—do
A physical architectural scale ruler is useful for reading a printed drawing when the stated scale is known. Use it to compare a graphic measurement with the written dimension and to spot an obvious discrepancy. It cannot establish structural adequacy, code compliance, accessibility, permit readiness or suitability for construction. If the graphic and written dimensions disagree, treat the sheet as unresolved and ask the design professional; never scale an AI drawing to invent a missing dimension.
Quick Recap
Questions to settle with your project team
- Which authority has jurisdiction, and which code editions and amendments apply on the planned construction date?
- Who is the licensed professional responsible for each discipline, and what exactly are they reviewing?
- Which documents must be signed, sealed, submitted or independently reviewed?
- What information is still an assumption, and what evidence will replace it?
- How will comments, revisions and field changes be recorded and distributed?
- What is the explicit hold point before mobilization or each major construction phase?
