How to Retrofit Daylighting in Existing Buildings: A Practical Sequence

The reliable way to improve daylight in an existing building is to retrofit the whole perimeter zone as one system: document sun and obstructions, stop direct sun and glare, improve light distribution, connect daylight to dimmable electric lighting, coordinate window work with HVAC, and then commission the controls with occupants. More glass or a higher visible-transmittance rating alone can increase glare, cooling load, and complaints.

Results depend on climate, orientation, glazing, room depth, shading, finishes, controls, and how people operate blinds. Use the sequence below to select measures for the building in front of you rather than promising a universal energy saving or payback period.

Why existing-building daylighting needs a whole-system plan

Daylight enters through windows, clerestories, skylights, and other openings, but its performance is determined by the entire room and building. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Tips for Daylighting with Windows: The Integrated Approach, 2nd Edition (2013) says decisions should be made “within the context of the whole building as a single functioning system rather than as an assembly of distinct parts.” A glazing change can alter electric-light demand, solar heat gain, mechanical loads, interior finishes, and occupant comfort at the same time.

Start with the complete perimeter zone, not one replacement window. Include the owner, architect or engineer, facilities staff, lighting designer, controls contractor, HVAC team, and the people who use the space. The U.S. Department of Energy describes daylighting as the use of windows or skylights for natural lighting and temperature regulation; that definition makes clear why lighting and thermal decisions belong together.

Step 1: Document the existing conditions

Map orientation and solar exposure

Record the compass direction of each façade, window head and sill heights, glazing type, frame condition, operability, interior and exterior shades, and the hours when direct sun reaches work areas. Note seasonal changes rather than relying on a single visit. East and west glazing generally receives low-angle sun that is difficult to shade and can create uneven brightness. Nearby buildings, trees, site walls, roof overhangs, and the building’s own projections can block or redirect light; photograph and map those obstructions.

DOE zero-energy-building guidance discusses vertical daylight façades for classrooms and similar spaces facing within 15 degrees, with 30 degrees as a maximum, of north or south. This is guidance for that design context, not a universal mandate for every retrofit. Treat orientation as a way to predict glare and solar load, then verify conditions at the actual building.

Measure the room and the perimeter zone

  • Measure room depth, ceiling height, partition locations, furniture height, and the distance from windows to regularly occupied workpoints.
  • Identify spaces that are too deep for ordinary windows to illuminate evenly, and spaces where an exterior obstruction limits the sky view.
  • Record existing illuminance or lighting-control data at representative work locations under different sky conditions when practical.
  • List complaints about glare, reflections, heat, cold, dark corners, or blinds that remain closed.
  • Check the electrical and HVAC systems serving the zone, including lighting circuits, sensors, thermostats, and zone boundaries.

This survey establishes whether the problem is insufficient daylight, excessive direct sun, poor distribution, weak controls, or an operating practice. It also prevents a window attachment from being selected without checking the frame, seals, and surrounding construction.

Step 2: Control direct sun and glare before adding brightness

Direct radiation entering for significant periods is usually the first problem to solve. DOE recommends bouncing, redirecting, or filtering sunlight so it does not strike occupants or create unwanted reflections. A bright window beside a dim work area can produce discomfort even when average room illuminance appears adequate.

Match shading to orientation

Condition Typical concern Questions for the retrofit
North-facing glazing More diffuse sky light in many locations, but nearby obstructions and reflected glare can still matter. Is the sky view clear, and are adjacent surfaces or screens reflecting light into work areas?
South-facing glazing Seasonal high sun can create heat and glare; high sun is often more predictable to shade. Can an overhang, exterior screen, light shelf, or interior shade block direct sun while preserving view and diffuse light?
East- and west-facing glazing Low-angle sun is harder to block and can produce strong, uneven brightness. Are exterior fins, operable shades, or schedule-based controls needed during morning or afternoon exposure?

Exterior devices generally intercept solar radiation before it reaches the glass, while interior shades mainly control glare after heat has entered. The appropriate choice depends on wind, maintenance access, fire and egress requirements, façade appearance, and whether occupants need a view or temporary darkening.

Preserve useful light and user control

A shade that is permanently down may eliminate glare but also eliminate the daylight benefit. DOE notes that occupants sometimes close adjustable blinds and fail to reopen them. Use automated or manually adjustable shades where the space needs control, and avoid unnecessary darkening in areas that do not require privacy, presentations, equipment protection, or another functional condition. Explain the control sequence and provide a simple local override; a technically capable system that people do not understand will underperform.

Step 3: Improve daylight distribution inside the room

Use interior surfaces as optical components

Ceilings, walls, floors, and furniture determine how far daylight travels. DOE recommends light-colored finishes to reflect light through a space, while warning that glare and reflections still need review. A matte, high-reflectance ceiling can distribute light more comfortably than a glossy surface. Repainting a dark perimeter wall may help, but check computer-screen reflections, artwork conservation, cleaning requirements, and the visual contrast between the window and the rest of the room.

Consider redirection systems for deep or obstructed spaces

LBNL’s Daylight in Buildings source book describes systems that redirect incoming sunlight or skylight and control glare. Options include light shelves, louvers and blinds, prismatic panels and films, laser-cut panels, light-guiding materials, holographic optical elements, and anidolic systems. They are not universal add-ons: geometry, window height, ceiling depth, obstruction angle, climate, and maintenance access determine whether a system works.

System Where it may help What to verify
Light shelf or reflective panel Rooms with a suitable upper window and enough ceiling height to bounce light deeper. Exterior projection, structure, water shedding, view, glare, dust, and the shelf’s effect on shading.
Louvers or blinds Façades needing adjustable control of direct sun. Blind position, automation, occupant override, cleaning, and whether closed blinds cut off all useful daylight.
Prismatic panel or film Windows where light needs to be redirected without a large projecting device. Optical performance by sun angle, view quality, attachment rating, durability, and edge detailing.
Laser-cut, holographic, or light-guiding material Special geometries or deep spaces where conventional windows cannot distribute light adequately. Application-specific modeling, glare, replacement parts, cleaning, and compatibility with the existing frame.
Anidolic system Selected projects using collectors and ducts or channels to move diffuse light farther into a plan. Available ceiling or wall paths, fire separation, structural work, and specialist design support.

For a home or small office, a daylight-redirecting shelf or reflective panel can be a reasonable category to investigate, but fit and glare must be assessed at the actual window. Do not assume a generic mirrored or blackout film will provide useful daylight.

Step 4: Evaluate glazing and attachments with more than one metric

Visible transmittance (VT) describes how much visible light passes through a window, but maximizing VT can worsen solar gain, heat transfer, or glare. LBNL interim reglazing guidance identifies four measurements to review together:

Metric What it indicates Retrofit decision
U-factor Heat transfer through the window assembly; lower values generally indicate less conductive heat flow. Check climate needs, frame condition, edge effects, and whether the quoted value applies to the complete assembly.
Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) The fraction of incident solar energy entering as heat. Balance winter solar benefits, summer cooling, orientation, shading, and local climate.
Visible transmittance (VT) The fraction of visible light transmitted. Use with glare and solar-gain analysis; a higher value is not automatically better.
Air leakage Air movement through the window assembly under a pressure difference. Inspect weatherstripping, operability, installation, and the existing frame before reglazing.

NFRC window ratings and AERC attachment ratings are distinct evaluation approaches. A window’s rating should not be confused with the performance rating of an added shade or other attachment. Ask for the rating scope, test conditions, and complete assembly details before comparing proposals.

Step 5: Pair daylight with responsive electric lighting

Zone the fixtures by daylight availability

Fixtures nearest the window should be controlled separately from fixtures deeper in the room. LBNL describes set-point tuning at the work location and dynamic dimming as daylight-control strategies. Place sensors where they represent the occupied task area, not directly in a sun patch or under a fixture, and set the response so electric light reduces only when available daylight is adequate.

Commission the control sequence

  1. Confirm which luminaires, sensors, switches, and dimming drivers belong to each daylight zone.
  2. Set the target illuminance or control set point at the work location and document the value and measurement method.
  3. Test response under bright sun, overcast sky, morning and afternoon conditions, and with shades in their normal positions.
  4. Check that dimming is smooth, does not cycle rapidly with passing clouds, and does not leave the room uncomfortably dark.
  5. Provide a clear occupant override and verify that the system returns to its intended automatic mode.
  6. Record the final settings, sensor locations, fault indications, and maintenance procedure for facilities staff.

Daylight changes by time, season, weather, and shade position. A control sequence that works on commissioning day can drift if sensors are dirty, furniture moves, lamps are replaced, or blinds remain closed.

Step 6: Coordinate daylight work with HVAC and the envelope

Shading, glazing, lighting, and HVAC are linked. Dimming electric lights can reduce internal heat, while a high-SHGC window or unshaded afternoon sun can increase cooling demand. LBNL’s 2020 demonstration combined LED lighting and advanced controls, automated interior shading with a daylight-redirecting upper portion, and basic HVAC-controls commissioning. Treat its results as a package outcome, not as a universal daylighting rate.

Coordinate the sequence with HVAC zoning, thermostat placement, ventilation requirements, condensation risk, and envelope air sealing. If a window replacement changes solar gain, update load calculations and control schedules. Do not disable ventilation or comfort safeguards to pursue a lighting reduction.

Step 7: Design for occupant comfort and acceptance

Measure success by visual comfort, thermal comfort, indoor environmental quality, and acceptance as well as energy. Ask occupants whether they can read screens, see outside, adjust shades when necessary, and understand what automatic controls are doing. Provide training at handover and a simple route for reporting glare or temperature problems.

Keep temporary darkening where presentations, privacy, equipment protection, or medical functions require it. In ordinary work areas, a shade strategy that preserves a view and diffuse light is more likely to remain open than an all-or-nothing blind policy.

What published projects actually demonstrate

The following figures are useful benchmarks only when their context remains attached:

Figure Context and limitation
13 federal building sites LBNL’s 2013 Integrated Daylighting Systems report assessed sites in California, Nevada, Illinois, Indiana, and Washington, D.C., retrofitted from 2009 to 2012.
49%–76% lighting savings Laboratory results reported by LBNL in 2020 for a combined lighting, automated-shading, and HVAC-controls package, measured across three seasons against two baselines.
19%–38% summer cooling-load savings Results from that same combined package and stated test context; they cannot be attributed to daylighting alone.
40,000-square-foot monitored floor LBNL’s 2017 occupied New York City high-rise office demonstration, with one year of pre-installation monitoring and six months after installation compared with a parallel reference floor.
More than 6 quads, approximately 6% of annual U.S. primary energy use LBNL’s 2025 estimate of commercial-window-affected loads nationwide. It is not the savings potential of an individual building or retrofit.
60% of buildings built before 2008 A historical 2012 EIA figure repeated secondhand in an LBNL 2020 conference paper; it should not be treated as a current building-stock statistic.

Commission, monitor, and adjust after installation

Plan a verification period rather than declaring success at turnover. Compare lighting levels, dimming behavior, shade positions, glare complaints, indoor temperatures, and lighting energy against a documented baseline. Review sunny and overcast days and at least one seasonal change. Inspect sensors and shades for dirt, obstruction, and failed actuators.

Use occupant feedback to find practical problems that meters miss: a control that dims too aggressively, a shade that is difficult to override, reflections on screens, or a workpoint that moved outside the sensor’s intended area. Adjust set points, zoning, schedules, or shade logic, then document the change so maintenance staff can preserve it.

A retrofit decision checklist

  1. Survey orientation, glazing, frames, obstructions, room geometry, finishes, controls, HVAC zones, and occupant complaints.
  2. Resolve direct sun and glare with orientation-appropriate exterior or interior strategies before increasing visible transmittance.
  3. Improve reflectance and distribution with finishes or a geometry-appropriate redirection system.
  4. Compare U-factor, SHGC, VT, and air leakage for the complete window and distinguish window ratings from attachment ratings.
  5. Zone and commission daylight-responsive electric lighting with documented set points and occupant overrides.
  6. Coordinate solar and lighting changes with HVAC loads, ventilation, comfort, and envelope work.
  7. Train occupants, preserve necessary user control, and monitor comfort and operation after handover.
  8. Use measured project results only with their stated package, season, baseline, and building context; obtain project-specific cost and payback information rather than assuming a general figure.

What daylighting can—and cannot—promise

Daylighting can reduce electric-light output and may reduce cooling demand when glazing, shading, controls, HVAC, and occupant practices work together. It cannot guarantee a fixed percentage saving in every existing building. A successful retrofit delivers useful, comfortable light where people work, limits direct solar problems, and remains understandable and maintainable for the people operating the building.
