To replace reverse-osmosis (RO) filters safely, first identify the system’s exact brand and model, then match every cartridge to its stage and part number. Follow that model’s shutoff or unplugging instructions, install each cartridge in the original position, flush the new media for the specified time, and reset the indicator with the controls your system uses. A reset clears the maintenance timer; it does not test or certify water quality.
Start with the exact RO system, not a generic cartridge
RO cartridges are not universal. A countertop purifier, an under-sink tank system, and a tankless unit can use different shapes, connectors, locking mechanisms, stages, and electronic timers. Even systems that appear to have the same number of stages may assign different cartridges to the sediment, carbon, membrane, and post-carbon positions.

Read the label on the purifier, faucet, tank, or control panel and locate the owner’s manual for that exact model. Record the model number before ordering parts. Then verify each replacement by stage name and part number. For example, the Moen F9900 four-stage system identifies F9910 and F9920 for stages 1 and 2, F9930 for stage 3, and F9940 for stage 4; those designations are specific to that system, not a cross-brand standard. Moen’s replacement instructions list the parts and the required shutoff.

Take a photograph of the installed cartridges and their labels before removing anything. If the labels are hidden, mark the housings or write down the order from the water inlet to the faucet. A membrane cartridge is not interchangeable with a sediment or carbon cartridge, and a post-carbon cartridge belongs at the outlet side shown in the manual. Echo’s instructions specifically tell users to match the original order and position before locking the new filters. The Echo RO manual also cautions that a cartridge must be fully seated and should not be overtightened.

Check the replacement interval for each stage
Intervals vary by model, water conditions, usage, and the stage being replaced. The reminder light is useful, but it is not a universal schedule. Source-water quality, daily volume, and total dissolved solids can shorten or extend the practical life of a cartridge. Use the interval in your model’s manual and investigate unusual taste, odor, flow loss, or an indicator that expires much earlier than expected.
Prepare the work area and shut the system down correctly
Place a towel, shallow pan, or bucket under the cartridges. Keep the new filters sealed until you are ready to install them, and wash your hands before handling water-contacting parts. Have the model manual open so you can follow the correct sequence rather than relying on a similar-looking purifier.
- Compatible cartridges: Confirm the exact model, stage, and part number for every filter.
- Water control: Identify the system’s supply shutoff and any tank or faucet valve. Some under-sink systems require the water supply to be closed; Moen’s F9900 instructions explicitly call for shutting off the water supply before replacement.
- Electrical control: A powered countertop purifier may need to be unplugged instead of, or in addition to, closing a water valve. The SpiroPure SP-RO500 manual directs users to unplug the device before cartridge work.
- Removal aid: Keep the supplied wrench nearby if the manual provides one. SpiroPure notes that replacement filters do not include a wrench and suggests using the included wrench if an old cartridge is too tight to remove by hand.
- Leak protection: Keep a dry cloth available so you can tell whether a fitting is still leaking after the water is restored.
Do not assume that one preparation sequence applies to every RO system. A countertop appliance and an under-sink assembly can have different valves, electrical controls, and pressure-relief steps. Follow the instructions for the model in front of you.

The following sequence describes the decisions common to many systems. The exact valve, button, twist direction, and order come from the owner’s manual.
- Identify the model and stages. Confirm the cartridge part numbers and note which filter is being replaced. If the indicator identifies a stage, record that stage before turning the system off.
- Stop water or power as specified. Close the supply valve when the manual requires it. Unplug a powered countertop unit when its manual calls for that step. If the system has a storage tank or separate faucet valve, follow the manual’s pressure-relief directions.
- Relieve pressure and protect the cabinet. Open the RO faucet only as directed, allowing pressure to fall before unlocking a cartridge. Keep the pan below the filter head; a small amount of trapped water is normal.
- Remove one cartridge at a time. Use the prescribed unlock direction or release button. Keeping the other cartridges in place helps preserve the original order.
- Inspect the old cartridge and sealing surfaces. Look for a damaged O-ring, cracked housing, or debris that could prevent a new cartridge from seating. Do not force a cartridge past a stop.
- Install the matching replacement. Align the tabs or keyed connection, push the cartridge fully into its socket, and rotate or latch it exactly as shown in the manual. Echo specifies a 90-degree clockwise rotation to lock its replacement filters; other systems may use a different movement.
- Repeat for the remaining stages. Preserve the original sequence. If the manual says two filters are changed together, replace them as a pair rather than mixing an old and new stage.
- Restore water slowly. Open the supply or valve gradually. Watch every connection and cartridge head while pressure returns.
- Check for leaks. Dry the area, wait, and inspect again. A cartridge that is not fully seated, an O-ring that shifted, or a housing that was overtightened can leak.
- Flush the new filters. Use the model’s time and procedure. New carbon media can release fine particles and air; flushing also clears the water that was inside the cartridge during installation.
- Reset the indicator. Use the exact control sequence for the installed model, after the replacement is complete.
Countertop example: SpiroPure SP-RO500
The SP-RO500 illustrates why a countertop unit should not be treated like an under-sink filter head. Its manual gives a specific power-off, unlock, lock, flush, and reset sequence. The SP-RO500 manual is the controlling document for this procedure.

Countertop example: Echo RO
Echo RO uses a display with six filter-life bars. Its manual says a filter is due for replacement when all bars are off. It lists different intervals for its filter types: the spun PP, carbon block, and post-activated-carbon cartridges are listed at 3–6 months, while the RO membrane is listed at 12–24 months. Echo qualifies those lifespans by source-water quality, daily usage, and TDS levels. Use the Echo manual for the unit’s complete procedure.

Under-sink example: Moen F9900 four-stage system
Moen’s F9900 guidance demonstrates how a plumbed system can have different service intervals for different stages. Shut off the water supply before opening the system. The instructions identify F9910 and F9920 for stages 1 and 2 and advise changing those two cartridges together at approximately six months. Stage 3, F9930, is listed at approximately 1–3 years; stage 4, F9940, is listed at about 12 months. Moen also advises sanitizing the system whenever the RO membrane, cartridge 3, is replaced. See Moen’s F9900 replacement article for the manufacturer’s sequence and model-specific details.
Do not apply those intervals to another under-sink system. The F9900’s paired replacement of stages 1 and 2 and its sanitation advice are design-specific instructions.

Tankless example: Pentair QuickConnect
Pentair’s QuickConnect tankless system uses a different maintenance pattern from the Moen example. Pentair lists its QuickConnect CF and CB filters at 12 months and its RO membrane at 24 months. Its indicator uses colors: blue means good, purple means nearing expiration, and red means expired. Those colors and intervals apply to the named QuickConnect model, not to RO systems in general. Pentair’s product page describes the system’s indicator and filter schedule.
When replacing a tankless cartridge, keep the supply shutoff and the manufacturer’s pressure-relief directions in view. A tankless unit may have fewer accessible housings than a traditional system, but its quick-connect fittings and electronic indicator still require the exact model procedure.
Other reset designs you may encounter
GE faucet-mounted indicator
Some GE RO systems place the filter indicator in the faucet assembly. GE’s support information describes a six-month timer on certain models and says disconnecting the faucet-indicator batteries resets that timer. It recommends replacing the faucet battery when changing the prefilter and postfilter cartridges. GE also notes that indicator behavior varies by model, so verify the procedure in the owner’s manual for your faucet and RO unit. GE’s filter-light guidance covers the applicable models and battery-reset method.
Antunes AQ-RO-400
The AQ-RO-400 owner’s manual, revised May 2021, uses a two-stage button sequence. Press Reset for two seconds, use Select to choose the cartridge you replaced, then press Reset for two seconds again. The manual’s default settings include six months for F1 and F2 and 24 months for F3. These are programmable settings for the AQ-RO-400, not general replacement statistics. Read the AQ-RO-400 owner’s manual before changing its settings.
Premier RO Pure valve heads
Premier states that its RO Pure valve heads automatically stop water to each filter when a filter is released, and that the monitor must be reset after a filter change. That automatic shutoff is a feature of the Premier module. Premier’s RO Pure support page provides the model-specific replacement and monitor information.

Reset methods at a glance
| System or example | Indicator or timer | Reset action described by the manufacturer |
|---|---|---|
| Some GE RO faucet indicators | Faucet-integrated timer; some models use a six-month timer | Disconnect the faucet-indicator batteries; replace the faucet battery when changing prefilter and postfilter cartridges. Confirm applicability in the model manual. |
| SpiroPure SP-RO500 | Filter Reset button | After installation and first-use flushing, hold Filter Reset for five seconds. |
| Echo RO | Six display bars; replacement is indicated when all bars are off | Hold Select for three seconds, select the replaced filter, then press Reset. |
| Antunes AQ-RO-400 | Selectable cartridge-life settings | Press Reset for two seconds, use Select to choose the replaced filter, then press Reset for two seconds. |
| Premier RO Pure | Monitor paired with valve heads | Reset the monitor after changing a filter, using the procedure for the installed RO Pure model. |
The controls are not interchangeable. A five-second hold on one purifier may do nothing on another, and disconnecting a faucet battery may reset only a timer rather than a cartridge-specific display.
Flush the replacement and sanitize when the manual requires it
Flushing is part of the replacement, not an optional cosmetic step. New carbon and membrane cartridges can contain manufacturing residue, loose fines, and trapped air. Run the system for the time specified by the manufacturer and discard the flush water as directed. Echo specifies 5–10 minutes for its RO replacement procedure; SpiroPure says to flush its replacement as at first use.
Do not substitute a guessed flush time for a model instruction. A short flush may leave carbon fines in the first glass, while an unnecessarily long flush wastes water. If the water remains cloudy, tastes strongly of carbon, or contains visible particles after the specified flush, stop using it and recheck cartridge seating and the manual’s commissioning steps.
Sanitization is a separate task from flushing. Moen advises sanitizing the F9900 system when its RO membrane, cartridge 3, is replaced. That advice should not be generalized to every membrane change: use the sanitizer, concentration, contact time, and rinse procedure specified for your system.

What to do if the indicator will not reset
The display still shows the old filter
- Confirm that the replacement cartridge is fully inserted and locked. Many systems will not accept a reset for a stage that the controller does not detect.
- Use the exact button sequence and hold time. Echo requires Select for three seconds before choosing a filter; SpiroPure requires Filter Reset for five seconds; Antunes uses two separate two-second Reset presses.
- Reset only after restoring power, when the manual requires the unit to be powered.
- Check whether the control is a faucet battery timer rather than a central electronic display. On applicable GE models, disconnecting the indicator batteries performs the timer reset.
The indicator resets, then returns to the old status
Verify that you selected the correct stage. A multi-stage unit can retain an expired status for a different cartridge. If the unit has replaceable batteries, install the recommended battery when changing the faucet indicator battery. If the display still behaves incorrectly, stop changing settings at random and consult the model’s service instructions; the reset control does not validate the cartridge or water quality.
Water leaks after replacement
- Close the supply or unplug the unit again according to the manual.
- Dry the connection so you can identify the leak’s exact location.
- Remove and reinstall the cartridge, checking that the keyed tabs, O-ring, and locking rotation are correct.
- Inspect the housing, valve head, and tubing for a damaged seal or crack.
- Restore water slowly and watch the connection continuously.
Do not solve a leak by overtightening a cartridge. Echo specifically warns against overtightening; excessive force can damage a seal or housing.
Low flow, unusual taste, or cloudy water
- Run the complete manufacturer-specified flush again if the manual permits it.
- Check that a protective cap or shipping plug was removed and that the cartridge is in the correct stage.
- Confirm that the supply valve is fully open and that tubing is not kinked.
- Review the cartridge part number; a physically similar filter may still be the wrong media or connector.
- If symptoms persist after correct installation and flushing, stop drinking the water and contact the manufacturer or a qualified water-treatment technician.
Common mistakes that shorten filter life or create false reassurance
- Buying by appearance alone: Similar-looking cartridges can have different stages, flow ratings, or connectors. Match the model and part number.
- Using one schedule for every stage: Sediment, carbon, membrane, and post-carbon elements have different documented intervals.
- Resetting before installing: A timer reset without a cartridge change can make an old filter appear new.
- Resetting every stage: Clear only the stage you replaced unless the manual explicitly instructs a full-system reset.
- Skipping the flush: New media needs the commissioning flush specified by its manufacturer.
- Assuming a reset proves safety: The indicator records elapsed time or a programmed life value. It does not measure contaminant removal or certify water quality.
- Mixing power and water instructions: A countertop unit may require unplugging; an under-sink system may require closing a supply valve. Follow the applicable manual.
- Forcing a tight cartridge: Use the supplied wrench only as directed. If the cartridge will not unlock or lock normally, inspect alignment and the housing rather than applying increasing force.
Keep a simple replacement record
Write down the installation date, cartridge stage, part number, and the indicator reset date. For systems with several intervals, record each stage separately. Note changes in taste, odor, flow, or source-water conditions. This log helps distinguish a normal scheduled replacement from a cartridge that is exhausting early and gives a service technician the information needed to diagnose the system.

When to stop and call for service
Get manufacturer or qualified technician help if the cartridge head, housing, tubing, or electrical controls are cracked; if a leak continues after correct reseating; if the system cannot maintain pressure; or if the indicator repeatedly resets itself. Stop using the RO water if there is persistent unusual taste, odor, visible sediment, or uncertainty about whether the correct cartridge was installed. A timer reset cannot compensate for a damaged system, incorrect cartridge, or unresolved sanitation problem.
