Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a shallow nail or screw hole, the usual repair is simple: remove loose debris, press drywall spackle or wall filler into the opening, level it with a putty knife, let it dry according to the product label, and sand lightly if necessary. A wider anchor hole, torn drywall paper, soft gypsum, or an unstable surface needs a patching method rather than simply adding more filler.
Before you repair anything, read the lease, written move-out checklist, and applicable tenancy guidance. Move-out duties vary by jurisdiction, and some owners want their staff to patch or paint. If the wall shows moisture, spreading cracks, softness, or another maintenance problem, document it and contact the landlord instead of concealing it.

Start with the lease and the wall condition
Check written move-out instructions first
Look for language about nail holes, anchors, wall marks, painting, approved materials, or repairs performed by the property owner. If the landlord has instructed tenants not to patch or paint, or requires its maintenance team to do the work, ask for confirmation in writing before applying anything. Keep that response with your move-out records.

A general internet rule cannot determine your obligation. A lease, a move-out checklist, and the law applying to your rental may use different standards. The practical goal is to return the wall in the condition required by those documents, not to perform an unnecessary cosmetic project.

Classify the damage before buying materials
| What you see | Likely approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tiny, shallow nail or tack hole; surrounding paper is intact | Spackle or wall filler | The void can usually be filled and leveled without reinforcement. |
| Small screw hole with an intact rim | Spackle or wall filler, sometimes in more than one thin coat | Deeper holes may shrink as they dry. |
| Anchor hole wider than a nail hole | Patch material and compatible filler | A larger opening may lack enough substrate for filler alone. |
| Torn, lifted, or missing drywall paper | Prepare the damaged paper, then patch and feather | Loose paper can telegraph through the finish or pull away later. |
| Soft, damp, stained, or crumbling drywall | Stop and report a maintenance issue | Filler does not correct moisture damage or an unstable wall. |
One manufacturer describes a small-hole spackle for nail holes and other common wall damage, and a related repair kit includes a self-adhesive patch for small projects. Those claims apply to the manufacturer’s products; they are not a universal size rule for every filler or patch.
Do not cover a building problem
Probe the area gently with a clean, dry tool. If the surface is soft, wet, swollen, discolored, or actively cracking, photograph it and notify the landlord. Do not seal a suspected leak, mold condition, loose wall surface, or electrical damage beneath cosmetic filler. A small hole in otherwise sound drywall is a different job from damage caused by water or movement.
Gather the right supplies
| Supply | Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Drywall spackle or wall filler | Filling shallow nail and screw holes | Use a product intended for interior wall repair and follow its label. |
| Small repair kit | Combines filler, an adhesive patch, putty knives, and often a sanding pad | Useful when you do not already own tools; optional for a single pinhole. |
| Putty knife | Pressing filler into the hole and scraping it flush | A narrow knife is easier to control around a small repair. |
| Fine sandpaper or sanding pad | Removing a dry ridge and blending the repair | Sand lightly; aggressive sanding can expose the patch or paper. |
| Dust rag or vacuum | Removing sanding dust | Dust left on the wall can affect paint adhesion. |
| Primer and matching paint | Finishing a visible repair when required and permitted | Color and sheen must match; the sources do not establish a universal repainting duty. |
| Floor protection | Containing filler and sanding dust | Use a drop cloth, scrap cardboard, or another removable covering. |
For very small holes, buying a large assortment of tools is unnecessary. A small container of spackle, a putty knife, and fine abrasive are generally enough. A kit becomes more useful when you have several holes, one wider anchor opening, or no sanding pad and knife on hand.
How to fill a tiny nail or screw hole
1. Protect the area
Move furniture away from the wall and cover the floor. Work in good light so a shallow depression or raised edge is visible. If the rental is occupied, keep filler, sanding dust, and tools away from children and pets and follow the product’s safety directions.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
2. Remove loose material
Brush away dust and loose flakes with a dry cloth. If a screw or hook remains, remove it carefully. Do not enlarge a sound hole just to make it look uniform. A tiny ragged edge can be trimmed only when it is genuinely loose; firmly attached drywall paper should remain intact.
3. Press in a small amount of filler
Load the putty knife with a modest amount of spackle. Press it across the opening from several directions so the material reaches the back of the void. Use only enough to fill the hole. A thick mound creates more sanding and can shrink or remain soft in the center.
4. Scrape the surface level
Hold the knife nearly flat and draw it across the repair, removing excess material while leaving the opening filled. Feather the edges a little beyond the hole so there is no sharp perimeter. The finished, wet surface should be close to the plane of the wall, not visibly raised.

Drying depends on the product, depth, humidity, temperature, and ventilation. One 3M example says a 1/2-inch-diameter by 1/8-inch-deep hole is ready to paint in 15 minutes, while also warning that drying time may vary. That is a manufacturer example for that size and product, not a general promise for deeper fills or other brands. If the filler is cool, dark, soft, or leaves a mark when touched lightly, it needs more time.

6. Sand only if needed
When the filler is fully dry, use fine sandpaper or a sanding pad with light pressure. Blend the edge into the surrounding wall rather than grinding the center aggressively. Stop as soon as the repair feels flush when you sweep a fingertip across it. Wipe away dust and inspect under the same lighting in which the wall will be viewed.
7. Add a second thin coat if the hole settled
Some deeper screw holes or first coats shrink slightly. If a depression remains, apply a thin second coat, let it dry, and sand again. Do not keep adding wet filler to a coat that has not dried; that traps moisture and makes the repair harder to finish.
How to repair a wider anchor hole or torn paper
Prepare the opening
Remove the anchor and any loose fragments. Cut or lift only paper that is already detached. Avoid digging into sound gypsum. Wipe away dust and make sure the surface is dry and stable. If the edge is crumbling or the opening continues to enlarge, stop and report it.
Use a suitably sized patch
A patch provides support where a larger opening has too little wall surface for filler alone. Select a patch and patching compound intended for drywall and sized for the damage. A self-adhesive patch can be convenient for a small repair, but follow the patch and compound instructions for overlap, coats, and drying.

Feather the compound beyond the patch
Spread compatible patching material over the patch and extend it beyond the edges. Feather the perimeter so the transition is gradual rather than a visible step. Let the first application dry completely before adding another. Several thin applications are easier to level than one heavy application.
Sand without cutting through the repair
Use light, even strokes after each coat has dried. The objective is a flat transition, not removal of the patch. If the patch mesh or drywall paper becomes visible, stop sanding and apply another thin coat. Clean all dust before deciding whether the surface needs primer or paint.
Match the wall’s texture and finish
Smooth painted drywall
For a smooth wall, the repair should be level, dust-free, and free of knife lines. Shine a flashlight across the wall from the side to reveal ridges and depressions. Correct the surface before painting; paint will not hide a raised edge reliably.

Textured drywall
A flat patch can remain visible on a textured wall even when it is perfectly sanded. After the base repair dries, match the surrounding texture with a compatible method and product, using the smallest practical area. Texture matching takes practice, so test on scrap material if available and follow the product directions. Do not assume that a landlord permits tenants to spray or repaint texture.

Primer and paint
Use primer when the product instructions or the existing finish call for it, especially where the repair is porous or visibly different from the surrounding paint. Paint only when the lease, written instructions, or landlord permits it and the match is reasonably certain. Color and sheen matching are not resolved by the filler itself. If you cannot match the finish, ask whether the owner prefers an unpainted, properly smoothed repair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing between filler and a patch
| Decision factor | Fill-and-smooth | Patch-and-feather |
|---|---|---|
| Hole size | Best for shallow nail and small screw holes | Better for wider anchor openings or holes with missing material |
| Wall paper | Works when paper is intact | Needed when paper is torn, lifted, or the opening lacks support |
| Supplies | Spackle, putty knife, fine abrasive | Patch, compatible compound, knife, abrasive, and possibly primer |
| Finish | Usually simplest on smooth painted drywall | Allows a supported repair that can be feathered and textured |
| Risk of over-repair | Low when the hole is genuinely small | Higher effort, but safer than building a thick mound of filler over a large void |
The stated size limit of any particular product belongs to that product. For example, 3M lists one small-hole product for damage up to 3 inches, but that product-specific claim does not mean every three-inch opening should be filled without a patch. The hole’s depth, edge condition, and substrate still determine the method.
Drying, sanding, and cleanup mistakes to avoid
- Filling over dust: Dust prevents good contact and can leave a soft or crumbly repair. Clean the hole before applying material.
- Using one thick coat: Thick filler can dry unevenly and shrink. Use thin applications and respect the label’s drying time.
- Sanding while damp: The surface can smear, tear, or become lower than the wall. Wait until it is fully dry.
- Over-sanding: Excess pressure can expose drywall paper, patch mesh, or the edge of the original hole.
- Ignoring texture: A smooth spot on a textured wall may be more noticeable than the original hole.
- Painting before inspection: Paint can make a ridge harder to correct and may create a color mismatch.
- Leaving dust behind: Sanding residue can affect primer, paint, and the cleanliness expected at move-out.
- Expanding a sound hole unnecessarily: Larger damage requires more material and may trigger a patch repair.
Troubleshooting a repair that does not look right
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| A dip appears after drying | The filler shrank or did not fully fill the depth | Apply a thin additional coat, dry completely, then sand lightly. |
| A raised ring surrounds the hole | Excess filler was left at the perimeter | Feather the edge with fine abrasive; avoid cutting into sound paper. |
| The center is still soft | The coat is too thick or has not dried | Allow more drying time. If the material remains unstable, remove loose filler and restart with thinner coats. |
| Patch outline is visible | Edges were not feathered or wall texture was not matched | Apply and feather another coat, then reproduce the surrounding texture if permitted. |
| Paint flashes or looks like a different sheen | Color, sheen, or porosity differs from the surrounding wall | Do not keep repainting randomly. Confirm whether painting is required and obtain an appropriate match or owner direction. |
| Crack reappears or the wall moves | Underlying movement or unstable substrate | Stop cosmetic work and report the condition. |
What move-out rules actually require
British Columbia example
The Province of British Columbia’s repairs-and-maintenance guidance states: “At the end of the tenancy, tenants are responsible for: … Patching nail holes in the walls.” The same guidance describes wear and tear as minor damage over time from regular use and says tenants are not responsible for that type of damage. This is British Columbia guidance, not a rule that automatically applies elsewhere.
Other jurisdictions and leases
Some rentals may treat a few ordinary picture-hook holes differently from larger anchor damage; others may assign specific cleaning or patching duties. The controlling answer depends on the jurisdiction, the lease, the move-out instructions, and the facts of the wall’s condition. Check the local housing or tenancy authority if the documents are unclear.
Do not confuse assessment guidance with tenancy law
HUD visual-assessment training treats holes larger than nail or tack holes as deteriorated in that assessment context. It explains that nail and tack holes are usually not considered deteriorated there because they are too small to meet de minimis levels and the substrate is usually stable. That training is not a determination of a renter’s duties under a lease or state or local law.
Document the finished condition
- Photograph each repaired area after the filler has dried and dust has been removed.
- Take wider room photographs showing where the repairs are located.
- Keep the lease, move-out checklist, and any written instructions about patching or painting.
- Record the product used and the date of the repair if a dispute later concerns what was applied.
- Complete the final inspection in daylight and with side lighting so ridges, depressions, or mismatched texture are visible.
Photos do not decide a legal dispute by themselves, but they preserve the condition you returned and the instructions you followed.
A practical final checklist
- Lease and move-out instructions reviewed.
- Each hole classified as a shallow fill, supported patch, or maintenance issue.
- Loose debris and paper removed without enlarging sound damage.
- Filler or patch material matched to the repair and used according to its label.
- Edges feathered and each coat dried fully.
- Surface sanded lightly and dust removed.
- Existing texture considered where applicable.
- Primer or paint used only when appropriate and permitted.
- Finished condition photographed and written instructions retained.
For an ordinary shallow nail or screw hole in sound drywall, a careful fill-and-smooth repair is usually sufficient. The point at which you should stop improvising is clear: a larger opening, torn paper, dampness, softness, movement, or uncertain move-out instructions calls for a patching plan or written guidance from the property owner.
