How to Remove Winter Salt, Mud, and Mildew Stains From a Deck

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I remove winter salt, mud, and mildew stains from a deck? Start by identifying whether the boards are wood, composite, or PVC and whether wood has a stain or waterproofer. Then follow that product maker’s current care instructions. There is no universal deck cleaner or salt-removal recipe: for example, Trex permits rock salt or calcium chloride on its decking, while TimberTech warns against rock salt and abrasive ice melts. The wrong chemical, brush, or pressure-washer setting can discolor a surface or damage its finish.

Identify the deck before you clean it

Look for the original installation documents, leftover packaging, an invoice, or a stamp on the underside of a board. Record the manufacturer, product line, approximate installation date, and color. “Composite” is not one standardized material: different generations and surface caps can have different cleaning and pressure-washing rules.

For wood, determine whether the boards are bare, painted, stained, or sealed with a waterproofer. A cleaner intended to remove surface dirt is not the same as a stripper intended to remove a coating. If you cannot identify the finish, test any product in an inconspicuous area and stop if the color or sheen changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the maker’s current care page and the label for the cleaner you plan to use. Keep the instructions beside you while working, because the permitted ice-melt, dilution, dwell time, brush type, and rinsing method can differ by product.

Match the stain to the right treatment

What you see Likely source First treatment Important limit
Brown or gray tracked-in patches, gritty soil, leaf fragments Loose mud and winter debris Dry sweep or blow, then rinse; use the manufacturer-approved soap and soft brush if a film remains Do not grind grit into the boards with a stiff or wire brush
Chalky white rings or streaks near steps and walkways Salt or ice-melt residue Wait until conditions are safe, then rinse and clean according to the deck maker’s ice-melt guidance Rock salt, calcium chloride, and abrasive melts are not interchangeable across brands
Green, black, or fuzzy spots, often where leaves stayed damp Mold or mildew growing on a film of organic debris Remove the debris, then use the approved cleaner and a soft-bristle brush Do not assume a stronger chemical is safer; follow the surface-specific label
Peeling, glossy, or uneven areas on wood A failing stain, paint, or waterproofer Decide whether the job is cleaning or coating removal before applying anything A stripper is not a routine substitute for seasonal cleaning

Trex explains that when pollen and dirt remain on composite decking, mold can feed on the resulting biofilm. Removing that film promptly is therefore part of mildew control, not just an appearance step. See Trex’s composite-decking care guide.

Gather compatible tools and supplies

  • A soft broom or leaf blower for loose debris.
  • A garden hose with a spray nozzle that can rinse without gouging the surface.
  • A soft-bristle deck brush with a handle long enough to keep your back upright.
  • The cleaner named in your deck manufacturer’s instructions, or a product whose label explicitly lists your wood finish or decking material.
  • A bucket and measuring container when the cleaner requires dilution.
  • Gloves, eye protection, and footwear with slip-resistant soles.
  • A plastic scraper for isolated, stuck-on blobs; avoid metal edges that can scratch capped composite or PVC.

Do not combine cleaners, acids, bleach, or solvents. Keep runoff away from ponds, plant beds, and neighboring property, and follow the product label for ventilation, dwell time, and disposal.

Use this low-risk cleaning sequence

  1. Choose a suitable day. Work when the surface is cool enough that the cleaner will not flash-dry and when temperatures allow rinsing without creating dangerous ice. Postpone the job if snow or ice makes the deck slippery or if runoff will freeze on a walkway.
  2. Clear furniture and planters. Lift rather than drag objects so trapped salt and grit do not score the boards. Protect nearby metal, painted surfaces, and vegetation from cleaner overspray.
  3. Remove loose material. Sweep or blow away leaves, sand, and dried mud. TimberTech specifically advises removing mud, clay, and other debris quickly from its deck surfaces; its care and cleaning guide explains the product-specific procedure.
  4. Rinse from the house outward. Use a fan of water rather than a concentrated jet. Move dirt toward an edge where it can be collected, not into gaps, drains, or a lower level.
  5. Test the approved cleaner. Apply the ready-to-use or correctly diluted solution to a hidden section. Check after the stated dwell time for whitening, color loss, raised grain, or a sticky film.
  6. Agitate gently. Work in small sections with a soft-bristle brush. Follow the grain on wood and the board direction on composite or PVC. Let the cleaner do the work instead of bearing down on the brush.
  7. Rinse thoroughly. Flush until no foam or slippery residue remains. Incomplete rinsing can leave a new film that attracts dirt or looks like a salt stain.
  8. Inspect in daylight. When the surface is dry, look at edges, under railings, around fasteners, and beneath furniture. Repeat only the approved cleaning step on remaining spots; do not escalate to a harsher chemical automatically.

How to clean Trex composite decking

Mud, dirt, mold, and mildew

Trex recommends rinsing the boards and using warm, soapy water with a soft-bristle brush for mold and mildew. Brush gently, then rinse completely. A wire brush can damage the surface and should not replace the specified soft brush. The complete instructions are in Trex’s “How To Clean Composite Decking” guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by removing the organic film that feeds mildew. If dark growth remains after the soap-and-brush step, consult the care page for your exact Trex product and follow its listed cleaner and contact time rather than improvising a stronger mixture.

Winter salt and ice melt

Trex’s cited guidance allows rock salt or calcium chloride for melting snow and ice on Trex decking. That permission is specific to Trex’s guidance; it does not make either material suitable for every composite or PVC deck. After the weather improves, rinse away residue and clean the surface as directed.

When a pressure washer is allowed

Trex permits pressure washing only for specified product lines and conditions. The guidance states a maximum of 3,100 psi, with a fan attachment or fan adjustment and a soap dispenser, for the named lines. It warns against pressure-washer use on early-generation Trex decking. Check the product generation before connecting a washer; if your boards are not among the permitted lines, use a hose and soft brush instead.

How to clean TimberTech composite and PVC decking

Remove mud before it dries into a film

TimberTech’s Care & Cleaning Guide says to remove mud, clay, and other debris quickly. Sweep first, rinse, and then use only the cleaner and brush combination listed for your specific decking and railing. Railings can have separate instructions from deck boards, so do not automatically transfer a board-cleaning method to a railing profile.

Use TimberTech DeckCleaner only where specified

TimberTech DeckCleaner is formulated for specified TimberTech Advanced PVC and composite products. The manufacturer estimates that one gallon of concentrate, properly diluted, makes four gallons of cleaner and covers approximately 1,000 square feet. That is a product estimate, not a universal coverage rate; textured boards, heavy soil, and repeated applications can change the amount required. Measure the dilution exactly as the label states.

Handle salt residue according to TimberTech’s warning

TimberTech warns against rock salt and abrasive ice melts on its decking. Its guidance also notes that calcium-chloride products can leave white residue; clean that residue when conditions safely permit. Do not read Trex’s allowance for rock salt as permission to use it on TimberTech. If the ice-melt container does not clearly identify its ingredients, ask the deck maker before applying it.

Cleaning exterior wood decks

Bare or previously cleaned wood

Remove leaves and mud, rinse, and use a wood cleaner labeled for exterior decking. Work in manageable sections so the solution does not dry on the boards. Keep the brush soft enough to avoid tearing the wood fibers, especially on older boards whose surface has weathered.

Wood with a stain, paint, or waterproofer

Cleaning removes surface soil; it does not necessarily remove a failing coating. If the finish is intact, start with the gentlest cleaner approved for that finish. If it is peeling, patchy, or incompatible with the coating you intend to apply next, follow the preparation guidance in Thompson’s deck coating-removal instructions or the coating manufacturer’s instructions.

When a stripper is appropriate

Thompson’s Maximum Strength Deck Stripper is a separate product for removing coatings. Stripping can expose fresh wood and requires careful application, protection of adjacent surfaces, and thorough rinsing. Do not use a stripper merely because winter mud or mildew is stubborn. Confirm that coating removal is actually needed, test a small area, and follow every label precaution.

For a routine seasonal clean, the distinction is simple: use a cleaner for dirt and biological growth; reserve a stripper for a deliberate refinish-preparation project.

Pressure-washing decisions and technique

Pressure washing is an equipment choice, not a default cleaning step. The permitted pressure, nozzle, distance, and product generation must come from the deck manufacturer. Trex’s 3,100-psi figure applies only to the specified Trex lines and setup described in its guide; it is not a safe limit for all decks.

  • If the guide prohibits pressure washing: use a hose, approved cleaner, and soft brush.
  • If the guide permits it with limits: use the stated fan attachment, pressure, soap dispenser, spray distance, and movement pattern. Keep the wand moving and test an inconspicuous board first.
  • If the deck is old or unidentified: assume the least aggressive method until the exact product is confirmed. A concentrated jet can etch composite caps, raise wood grain, force water under coatings, or scar soft PVC.

Never use a turbo or zero-degree nozzle on deck boards. Do not direct spray into electrical fixtures, under siding, or beneath the edge where water can enter the framing.

Troubleshoot stains that remain

The white residue returns after rinsing

Check whether the source was calcium chloride or another ice melt, and review the deck maker’s guidance. Brush and rinse again only after the surface is safe to work on. If the residue persists, stop applying more chemicals; document the product used and contact the manufacturer with the deck model and ice-melt ingredients.

Green or black marks remain after cleaning

Look for organic debris trapped under furniture, between boards, at the ledger, and beneath planters. Remove the source, repeat the approved cleaner at its stated dilution, and allow the required dwell time. If discoloration is inside a coating, a surface cleaner may not remove it; identify whether the finish needs a controlled stripping and refinishing process.

The boards look lighter or blotchy

Uneven dwell time, dried cleaner, incompatible chemicals, aggressive brushing, or pressure damage can all create a patchy appearance. Stop testing new products. Rinse thoroughly, photograph the affected area when dry, and ask the decking or coating manufacturer for a repair recommendation.

Mildew comes back quickly

Persistent dampness is usually a maintenance problem rather than a need for a stronger cleaner. Improve drainage, keep leaves from accumulating, move planters so air can circulate, and clear gaps between boards. Inspect shaded areas after rain and clean organic film before it remains long enough to support new growth.

Mud is packed into the gaps

Loosen it with a hose from the higher side of the deck and use a soft brush or plastic tool. Do not force metal objects between boards, and do not block the drainage path by pushing mud beneath the deck.

Prevent the next winter’s stains

  • Remove leaves, pollen, and tracked soil before they stay wet against the boards.
  • Use only the ice-melt type your deck maker permits. Keep the container or ingredient list so you can identify what was spread.
  • Place mats at entrances, but choose ones approved for outdoor decking and lift them periodically so moisture does not remain trapped.
  • Use saucers under planters and leave clearance for airflow.
  • After a thaw, rinse salt and grit before they dry into a film.
  • Inspect the finish on wood at the start and end of the season. Recoat only after the surface is clean, dry, and prepared for that specific product.
  • Keep a record of the deck brand, product line, finish, cleaner, dilution, and date. That information prevents a future helper from applying an incompatible treatment.

When to stop and call a professional

Get a deck professional or the manufacturer involved when boards are cracked, soft, cupped, or delaminating; when fasteners or framing show corrosion; when a coating failure extends across large areas; or when the deck’s material and finish cannot be identified. A professional can distinguish a removable surface stain from damage within the board or coating and can work safely on elevated structures.

Contact the manufacturer before cleaning if the product is under warranty, if you used an unapproved ice melt, or if a test patch changed color. Provide clear photos, the product line, installation age, cleaner name, dilution, and the weather conditions during cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same salt or ice-melt product on every composite deck?

No. Trex’s guidance permits rock salt or calcium chloride on its decking, while TimberTech advises against rock salt and abrasive ice melts and warns that calcium chloride can leave white residue. Check the exact manufacturer and product line first.

How much TimberTech DeckCleaner should I mix?

Follow the product label for the required dilution. TimberTech estimates that one gallon of concentrate makes four gallons of cleaner and covers approximately 1,000 square feet; the figure is a manufacturer estimate for that product, not a general deck-cleaner rate.

Should I strip a wood deck every spring?

No. A cleaner is intended for ordinary dirt and mildew. A stripper is for deliberate removal of a stain, paint, or waterproofer when the coating must be replaced, and it requires separate preparation and safety steps.
