Use a tar remover labeled for the exact surface, test it in a hidden spot, and follow that product’s directions. Automotive paint, concrete and masonry, and exterior siding can react very differently to solvents, abrasion, heat, and pressure. A method that is reasonable for an unfinished driveway can stain painted siding or damage a vehicle finish.
Choose the method by surface, not by stain alone
Road tar, roofing asphalt, and black bitumen splashes are sticky hydrocarbon residues, but the safe way to dissolve them depends on what is underneath. Before opening a cleaner, identify both the substrate and its finish.
| Surface | Use a product that explicitly names | Main risks to control |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle paint or chrome | Automotive paintwork and, where applicable, chrome | Heat, scratching, fresh refinishes, wraps, matte finishes, and coatings |
| Concrete or masonry | Concrete, masonry, brick, cement, or the specific stone finish | Solvent damage to adjacent materials, unsafe runoff, inadequate ventilation, and residue in porous surfaces |
| Exterior siding | The actual siding material and finish, such as vinyl, aluminum, wood, or cement composition | Paint removal, discoloration, damage to caulk and trim, and excessive pressure |
If the label does not name your substrate or finish, treat compatibility as unknown. Ask the manufacturer of the coating, wrap, sealant, or siding for approval rather than assuming that a product marketed for “tar” is safe everywhere.

- Read the current product label and safety data sheet. Use the gloves, eye protection, respirator requirements, ventilation, and protective clothing specified there.
- Move vehicles, tools, toys, plants, and other items away from the work area. Mask or cover trim, windows, gaskets, plastics, painted surfaces, wood, roofing, and other materials the label identifies as solvent-sensitive.
- Test a small, inconspicuous area first. Allow the test area to dry and inspect for whitening, gloss change, softening, staining, color transfer, or loss of paint before treating the visible stain.
- Work on a cool surface. Direct sun can heat panels and accelerate solvent action; a hot panel is especially risky on a vehicle.
- Keep clean, soft cloths and the approved rinse equipment ready. Do not improvise with abrasive pads, razor blades, wire brushes, or household chemical mixtures.
- Plan where rinse water will go. Solvent-contaminated water must not enter storm drains, sewers, or waterways where the product instructions prohibit discharge; follow local disposal rules.
“Test on an inconspicuous area first” is an explicit direction for Krud Kutter Tough Task Remover, and SOPREMA 651 warns that some staining may occur. The same precaution is sensible for any painted, coated, porous, or unfamiliar surface.
How to remove tar from a car’s paint or chrome
For a vehicle, choose an automotive tar remover whose label specifically permits paintwork. SONAX Tar Remover (300 ml, Art. No. 03342000) is documented by its manufacturer for tar and asphalt stains on paintwork and chrome. Its instructions below apply to that product; they are not a universal dwell time for every automotive cleaner.

- PERFECT PRE-WASH STEP - Use tree sap remover for car before a full wash to help prevent swirls and scratches caused by bonded debris.
- HAND WASH OR FOAM CANNON - Add this Chemical Guys wash to a wash bucket or foam cannon for maximum coverage; rinse easily without streaking or residue
Step-by-step procedure
- Wash first. Wash the vehicle with car shampoo to remove loose grit and road film, then dry the area. Cleaning first reduces the chance that dirt will be dragged across the paint during wiping.
- Confirm the panel is cool. Do not use the remover on a hot surface. Park in shade or wait until the panel has cooled.
- Apply to the soiled area. Spray the product only where tar or asphalt is present, avoiding unnecessary contact with trim, rubber, plastics, and glass unless the label says they are compatible.
- Allow the product to work briefly. SONAX says to leave its remover for approximately one minute. Do not extend that time automatically for another product; use the dwell time on that cleaner’s label.
- Wipe with a soft cloth. Lift the softened residue with a clean, soft cloth. Use light pressure and change to a clean section as tar transfers; do not scrub aggressively.
- Repeat only as directed. If a film remains, follow the label for a second application rather than scraping or increasing pressure. Stop if the paint changes appearance.
- Protect the treated area. SONAX instructs users to protect the area afterward with wax. Use a compatible protectant and follow its own application directions.
Paint finishes that need a separate compatibility decision
The available manufacturer instructions do not establish compatibility for fresh repairs, delicate vinyl wraps, matte or satin paint, ceramic coatings, paint-protection films, or other specialty finishes. Do not assume that a product approved for conventional glossy paint is safe on those surfaces. Check the coating, film, or vehicle manufacturer and the cleaner label first, then test a hidden location.
What can damage automotive paint
- Heat: SONAX expressly says, “Do not use on hot surfaces.”
- Abrasive removal: Dried tar can trap grit. Scraping, scouring pads, or compound used before the residue is softened can leave scratches or dull the clear coat.
- Uncontrolled solvent contact: Overspray can affect unpainted plastics, rubber, decals, or adjacent finishes. Apply sparingly and wipe promptly.
- Fresh refinishing: Follow the body shop or paint manufacturer’s cure-time and chemical-resistance guidance before attempting removal.
How to remove asphalt or roofing tar from concrete and masonry
Concrete and masonry are porous, so a surface stain may be partly absorbed rather than sitting entirely on top. Use an asphalt/tar remover labeled for concrete or masonry and follow its application, agitation, dwell, and rinsing instructions exactly. There is no single dwell time that can safely be prescribed for every concrete mix, stone, finish, or tar deposit.
Using a masonry-rated solvent cleaner
PROSOCO Sure Klean Asphalt & Tar Remover is described by its manufacturer as a heavy-duty, water-rinsable solvent cleaner for masonry and concrete. The product is most effective outdoors, where rinse water can be controlled and ventilation is adequate.
- Read the label and safety data sheet. Set up the required personal protective equipment and ventilation before opening the container.
- Protect surrounding materials. Mask or remove vehicles and shield windows, paint, caulk, sealants, synthetic finishes, plastics, reflective films, wood, roofing, and other solvent-sensitive materials. PROSOCO warns that its solvent can damage these materials.
- Test first. Apply the cleaner to a small hidden section of the same concrete or masonry. Check for color change, etching, darkening, or a halo after rinsing and drying.
- Apply only as directed. Keep the product on the tar-affected area and use the label’s specified brush, agitation, and dwell procedure. Do not invent a longer soak time to compensate for a difficult deposit.
- Rinse thoroughly. PROSOCO requires thorough rinsing. Collect, redirect, or otherwise manage contaminated rinse water so it does not enter sewers or waterways where prohibited.
- Inspect after drying. Porous materials can reveal a remaining shadow only after they dry. A repeat treatment is appropriate only if the product instructions permit it and the test area remains sound.
Because solvent cleaners can attack nearby materials, a broad masonry job may require containment, additional masking, and professional equipment. Ventilation is not optional in an enclosed garage, basement, or poorly ventilated loading area.
SOPREMA 651 and mixed hard-surface jobs
SOPREMA 651 is listed by its manufacturer for concrete, brick, cement, stucco, metal siding, roofing equipment, and vehicles. It is a solvent, and the manufacturer warns that some staining may occur; perform a small-area test before treating the main surface. A broad substrate list does not prove that every paint, sealer, vehicle coating, or aged finish is compatible, so use the current product data and safety information for the exact job.
When the concrete will be painted or coated
Tar must be removed before a coating can bond reliably. Sherwin-Williams’ surface-preparation guidance lists tar among concrete contaminants to remove and calls for suitable cleaning and rinsing for cement-composition siding. That guidance concerns preparation for coating, not a guarantee that a particular household stain-removal method will work. After cleaning, allow the substrate to dry as required by the coating manufacturer and verify that no oily residue remains.

Identify the siding before choosing a cleaner. Painted wood, vinyl, aluminum, and cement-composition siding have different finishes, and nearby window sealants, trim, and caulk may be more solvent-sensitive than the siding itself.

Vinyl, aluminum, and wood siding with a labeled multi-surface cleaner
Rust-Oleum’s Krud Kutter Tough Task Remover lists tar and asphalt among the soils it removes and names wood, vinyl, and aluminum exterior siding, along with concrete driveways, among its recommended uses. Its directions are specific to that product:
- Test first. Apply the cleaner to an inconspicuous area and inspect for color or gloss change.
- Do not use on varnished surfaces. If the siding or trim has a varnished finish, choose a different product approved for that finish.
- Do not mix chemicals. Krud Kutter says not to mix it with other chemicals. Combining cleaners does not make tar removal safer or more effective.
- For pressure-washer application, use low pressure. High pressure can remove paint or expose existing discoloration. Pressure is an application aid, not a substitute for a compatible cleaner.
- Work from the top down on vertical surfaces. Keep the surface wet, do not allow the product to dry, and rinse thoroughly. The pressure-washer directions specify rinsing after 3–5 minutes; that timing belongs to this product and method only.
Painted wood and cement-composition siding
Painted siding needs a cleaner that explicitly permits both the siding substrate and its paint system. Test beneath a lap, behind a downspout, or in another hidden place, then let the area dry before deciding. Cement-composition siding may require the cleaning and rinsing steps recommended for coating preparation; do not direct solvent into joints, open seams, or sealants unless the label says they are compatible.
Why a masonry solvent may be wrong for siding
PROSOCO’s masonry solvent carries warnings for paint, plastics, caulk, sealants, reflective films, wood, roofing, and other sensitive materials. Those warnings make it unsuitable as a casual all-purpose siding cleaner, even when the siding has an asphalt splash. Use the product category and substrate approval that match the job.

Compare the documented options before buying
| Option | Named uses | Key procedure or limitation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| SONAX Tar Remover, 300 ml, Art. No. 03342000 | Automotive paintwork and chrome | Wash and dry; apply to a cool panel; leave approximately one minute; wipe with a soft cloth; protect with wax. Take care with new or refinished paint. | Localized tar spots on conventional vehicle paint or chrome |
| PROSOCO Sure Klean Asphalt & Tar Remover | Concrete and masonry | Heavy-duty, water-rinsable solvent. Requires thorough rinsing, ventilation, protection of adjacent materials, and controlled runoff. | Outdoor concrete or masonry where containment and rinsing are practical |
| SOPREMA 651 | Concrete, brick, cement, stucco, metal siding, roofing equipment, and vehicles | Solvent product; manufacturer warns some staining may occur and requires a small-area test. | Hard-surface jobs covered by the current product data, after compatibility testing |
| Krud Kutter Tough Task Remover | Tar and asphalt on wood, vinyl, and aluminum exterior siding; concrete driveways | Do not use on varnished surfaces or mix with chemicals. For its pressure-washer method, use low pressure, work top down, keep wet, and rinse after 3–5 minutes. | Exterior siding or driveway work within the product’s listed uses |
The decisive comparison is not which product sounds strongest. Check the exact substrate and finish, formulation and exclusions, required dwell and agitation, rinsing method, adjacent-material warnings, and whether you can safely control runoff.
Common mistakes and how to recover
“I will blast it off with a pressure washer.”
Pressure alone can remove paint or reveal discoloration, according to Rust-Oleum. Use only the pressure and nozzle arrangement allowed by the chosen product, and keep the stream away from siding joints, window seals, vehicle emblems, and fragile coatings.
“A stronger solvent will work on everything.”
Solvent strength increases compatibility risk. A masonry solvent can damage paint, caulk, plastics, reflective film, wood, roofing, and sealants. If the label does not name the surface, do not use it there.
“I can scrub the last bit away.”
Scrubbing or scraping a softened deposit can scratch paint and abrade coated siding. Reapply only as directed, use a soft cloth or approved brush, and stop when the surface begins to change.

“Longer dwell time is always better.”
Longer contact can increase staining, softening, or penetration into porous materials. Use the manufacturer’s stated time; where no universal time is provided, let the label govern.
The test spot changed color
Stop. Do not expand the application or try to counteract the change with another chemical. Rinse or remove the product exactly as directed, document the affected finish, and contact the substrate or coating manufacturer before proceeding.
Tar remains after the first pass
Let the area dry and inspect it under normal light. If the label permits repeat treatment, repeat the tested process rather than increasing pressure, heat, abrasion, or dwell. Deeply absorbed staining may not be fully removable without replacing or refinishing the affected material.
