A new Wi-Fi password alone does not release a camera, lock or hub from a vendor account. Inventory the equipment before making changes, preserve any recordings or codes you are entitled to keep, and verify access from a fresh account session when the work is finished.
Start with a safety and access inventory
Smart-home equipment can still expose video, unlock doors, trigger alarms or reveal occupancy after a house changes hands. Work methodically rather than deleting devices at random. Photograph each item in place and record the information needed to identify it later.

- Brand, exact model and serial number.
- QR code, setup code or MAC address printed on the device.
- Room or exterior location.
- Whether it is a camera, doorbell, lock, alarm, thermostat, speaker, hub, bridge or appliance.
- The app currently used to control it and any visible account or email address.
- Whether it is wired, battery powered, connected through a hub or connected directly to Wi-Fi.
Before removing anything, save recordings, event clips, access codes and configuration details that the sale agreement or local law allows you to retain. Removing a camera from an account can delete its stored video, and resetting a lock can erase every existing passcode. If a device is part of a monitored alarm service, document the service name and account number before disconnecting it.
Have the former homeowner release ownership when possible
The cleanest transfer is for the previous owner to sign in to the manufacturer’s app and remove each device. This preserves the device’s normal release process and avoids an ownership dispute or waiting period.

Google Home and Nest cameras or doorbells
Ask the former owner to open the app where the camera or doorbell was originally set up, select the device, and remove it from the old home. Google says the removal process should finish before the device is unplugged. Follow the removal guidance at Google Home and Nest Help.
Ring doorbells and cameras
Ring states that ownership is released by removing the device in the Ring app. During a takeover attempt, the prior owner is notified. The former resident should complete the release before you begin setup, using the procedure at Ring’s ownership-transfer instructions.
If the former owner is unavailable, do not try to guess their password or retain their login. Use the manufacturer’s documented reset and support process, keeping your purchase or closing documents available if support asks you to prove possession of the property.
Remove former residents from shared-home permissions
Deleting a device tile from your phone is not the same as removing a person from the home or vendor account. Check member lists, shared users, household roles, routines, voice profiles and linked services.
Google Home
Only a home administrator can remove another person. In Google Home, open the home settings, view the people or members list, select the former resident and choose the remove option. Removal cuts that account’s access to the home’s devices and services. Google’s current permissions guidance is at Google Home permissions and sharing.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Also remove products from the account in which they were originally configured. A person can disappear from the household list while an individual camera, lock or service remains associated with the old product account.
Apple Home
On the home owner’s device, open the Home app, open the home settings, select the People list, choose the former resident and remove them. Apple documents the current process at Apple’s Home sharing guidance. If you remove or rebuild the entire home on current Apple platforms, HomeKit accessories must be added back to the new home.

Other accounts and integrations
Review the manufacturer account separately from Google Home, Apple Home or another general dashboard. Remove old users from security subscriptions, alarm monitoring, web portals, voice assistants, automation services and any bridge or hub account. A shared dashboard may only be displaying a device whose ownership is still held elsewhere.
Change the network that the new household controls
Change the Wi-Fi network name and password, or replace the router with one registered to you. This prevents devices from silently reconnecting to the previous homeowner’s router credentials. It does not remove a manufacturer account, delete cloud recordings or release ownership.
- Sign in to the router’s administrative interface using credentials you have changed.
- Set a new Wi-Fi name and a strong, unique password. Update the router’s administrator password as well.
- Disable any guest network, remote-management account or mesh-node login that the former resident could still control.
- Reconnect each device through its manufacturer app rather than assuming it will migrate automatically.
For Amazon and Matter devices, Amazon says Wi-Fi settings can be changed in the Alexa app. Open Alexa, select the device, review the listed network and choose Change when necessary; check the router if the device cannot connect. See Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Factory-reset devices that remain linked to the former owner
A factory reset is the normal remedy when the previous account is unavailable or the vendor still reports that a device belongs to someone else. It erases local configuration and requires setup from the beginning. Exact button sequences vary by model, so use the model-specific instructions rather than a generic reset combination.
- Confirm that you have saved permitted recordings, codes and settings.
- Identify the reset control and the required power state in the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Hold or select the reset command for the stated duration and wait for the device’s confirmation tone, light or spoken message.
- After the reset completes, remove the device from any old app tile still shown on your phone.
- Connect it to your new Wi-Fi, sign in with your account and complete the manufacturer’s pairing process.
- Rename the device, assign its room and recreate only the routines and integrations you trust.
Google advises that a camera or doorbell connected to another account may require a factory reset and pairing to your account. Its moving guidance also says to factory-reset equipment left by a previous resident before setting it up in the new owner’s app: Google’s moving and device setup guidance.
Amazon says a pre-owned Echo should begin setup with a factory reset, then be connected to the new Wi-Fi network and registered to the new Amazon account. The reset removes personal information and smart-home connections; supported models may offer a lighter reset that retains some connections. Follow Amazon’s pre-owned Echo instructions for the exact model.
Platform-by-platform transfer requirements
| Ecosystem | Who releases ownership | Is a reset always required? | What can be lost or delayed | Where to perform the work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Home/Nest | Former owner removes the product; a home administrator removes shared people. | No, when the old owner removes it correctly. Yes when the old account is unavailable or the product remains bound. | Camera Video History can be deleted when the product is removed. Some camera transfers can wait for old history to expire. | Product’s original Google Home/Nest setup and Google Home member settings. |
| Ring | Former owner releases it by removing the device in the Ring app. | Use the documented release first; support or reset steps may be needed if the owner cannot act. | The prior owner is notified when a takeover is attempted; saved settings or recordings may not carry over. | Ring app, followed by setup in the new Ring account. |
| Amazon Alexa/Echo | Previous registration is removed by resetting and registering the hardware to the new account. | Amazon recommends a factory reset for pre-owned Echo hardware. | Full reset erases personal information and smart-home connections; a supported lighter reset may retain connections. | Physical device reset, then Alexa app and the new Amazon account. |
| Apple Home/HomeKit | Home owner removes shared people; the new owner rebuilds the home when necessary. | Not for ordinary member removal. Recreating a removed home requires accessories to be added again. | Home configuration, automations and accessory assignments may need to be rebuilt. | Home app’s home settings and each accessory’s pairing process. |

Preserve evidence before removing access
Review event history before account removal. Export or save clips you are entitled to retain, note the time zone and camera location, and record any incident numbers if footage may be needed for a property, insurance or legal matter. Do not copy or distribute recordings of other people beyond a lawful purpose.

Allow for a camera-history waiting period
Google states that a Nest camera still associated with another account can remain unavailable until the previous video history expires; the current support guidance says this can take up to 60 days. A factory reset may still be necessary after the account issue is resolved. This is a vendor retention limitation, not a sign that the former owner should keep access.
Check physical privacy
Until ownership is confirmed, unplug indoor cameras or cover their lenses if doing so will not disable a safety system you need. For exterior cameras, preserve the mounting position but disconnect power while you complete the transfer if remote viewing remains uncertain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Special handling for smart locks and alarms
Smart locks
Remove old owners, guests, virtual keys and scheduled codes in the lock’s own app. A Nest × Yale Lock requires a factory reset to change settings when it remains tied to the former account, and that reset clears existing passcodes. After pairing, create new owner and guest codes, test the keypad from outside with the door open, and verify that remote lock and unlock notifications arrive only on your devices.
Alarm panels and monitored systems
Identify whether the panel is locally controlled or connected to a monitoring contract. A reset can erase zones, entry delays, emergency contacts and dispatch settings. Transfer or cancel monitoring through the provider before changing the panel, and test alarms without triggering an unnecessary emergency response. Replace old user PINs even if the panel appears to have been removed from a phone app.
Thermostats, hubs and bridges
Reset the central hub before individual accessories when the ecosystem requires a hub account. Otherwise, you can create orphaned sensors that still report to the old hub. Re-pair thermostats, bridges and wireless sensors one at a time, label each room accurately and test automations after every group is online.

Verify that the former owner no longer has access
Verification should use a clean session, not only the phone that inherited the old setup.
- Sign out of the old resident’s account on every household phone, tablet, browser and shared smart display.
- Sign in to your account from a fresh browser or newly configured device and confirm that the former email is absent from household members, shared users and product owners.
- Open each camera and confirm live view, recording destination, notification recipients and event history.
- For locks and alarms, inspect owners, guests, PINs, schedules, emergency contacts and remote-control permissions.
- Review routines, scenes, voice profiles, linked services and third-party integrations for old names or accounts.
- Test local control, remote control and push notifications while you are present at the property.
- Record the device serial number, new account owner, reset date and any subscription that still needs cancellation.
Removing a device does not automatically cancel every related subscription. Check billing and monitoring separately, and obtain confirmation when a service has been closed.
Troubleshoot common transfer failures
“This device is already registered to another account”
Confirm that the former owner removed the product from the original manufacturer app, not just from a general dashboard. If they cannot, perform the model-specific factory reset and retry setup. If the app still blocks pairing, contact the manufacturer with proof that the device came with the property.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The device will not join the new Wi-Fi
Check that the router broadcasts the band and security mode supported by the device, move the device near the access point during setup, and verify the network name and password character-for-character. In Alexa, review the device’s listed Wi-Fi network and use Change where available. A successful network connection does not prove that account ownership has changed.
The old owner is gone from the member list, but can still control something
Inspect the individual product account, shared access list, routines, voice assistants, hubs and web portals. Remove old tokens or integrations and rotate passwords for the manufacturer account, router and email account used for recovery.
Resetting the device removed more than expected
Factory resets commonly erase recordings, passcodes, room assignments, routines and smart-home connections. Recreate only what you need, use new credentials and document the final configuration so a later service call does not require the former owner’s information.
The camera cannot be reassigned immediately
Check whether the vendor is retaining the old account’s video history. Google’s guidance allows up to 60 days for some Nest-camera history to expire. Keep the camera disconnected or physically privacy-protected while you wait, and contact support if the stated period has passed without release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFinal handover checklist
- Every camera, doorbell, lock, alarm, thermostat, speaker, hub, bridge and appliance appears on your inventory.
- Former residents are removed from household member and shared-user lists.
- Manufacturer accounts, hubs, routines, voice profiles and linked services show only approved users.
- Old Wi-Fi credentials and router administrator access no longer work.
- Devices that remained bound to the former owner were factory-reset and paired to your account.
- New lock codes, alarm PINs and recovery methods have been created and tested.
- Permitted recordings and configuration details were saved before destructive changes.
- Camera notifications, remote controls, local controls and automations were tested.
- Subscriptions and monitoring contracts were transferred or canceled separately.
- A written record identifies each device, its account owner, reset date and any unresolved waiting period.
Once this checklist is complete, the former homeowner’s credentials are no longer part of the operating system for the property. Keep the inventory and reset record with your closing documents so future residents can perform a clean transfer instead of inheriting unknown access.
