Use a portable cleaner sized by CADR, clean settled dust with damp methods, and move sleeping or working to the quietest room. For continuing noise, treat windows, background ventilators and the whole façade as one system rather than expecting a single product to solve it.
These steps reduce nuisance and particle entry, but no general guide can predict the dust or indoor decibel level beside a particular project. Persistent problems, overheating, condensation or inadequate fresh air call for a building-specific assessment.

Why roadwork reaches the rooms inside your home
Road dust and vehicle exhaust are outdoor particulate sources. Particles can enter through an open window or door, but also through small gaps around frames, service penetrations and other leakage paths. Once indoors, some material remains airborne and some settles on floors, furniture and horizontal surfaces. Construction activity can also create a changing pattern: a day with excavation, cutting or dry weather may be very different from a day with paving or rain.

An open window is a direct acoustic opening, while a closed window still transmits sound through the glazing, frame, wall and any background ventilator. Closing the window usually removes the most direct opening for both sound and particles, but it also reduces natural ventilation. The practical answer is therefore a coordinated plan for air, temperature, moisture and sound.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes the governing principle this way: “The most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air.” Roadwork makes both halves important: limit entry when outside conditions are worst, then provide safe ventilation when the air is cleaner.
What to do during a dusty or noisy work period
- Check conditions before opening windows. Look at your local air-quality information where available and observe the site. If dust is visibly blowing or outdoor pollution is high, keep road-facing windows closed while maintaining a safe indoor temperature and ventilation strategy.
- Close the shortest, leakiest routes first. Shut windows and exterior doors on the road-facing side. Keep doors closed rather than propped open, and use weatherstripping only to address a known uncontrolled leak.
- Set filtration before the work starts. Confirm the size and rating of the central HVAC filter. If you use a portable air cleaner, install a clean filter, leave its air inlets and outlet unobstructed, and select a fan speed you can run for the duration of the event.
- Use the quieter side of the home. If the layout allows, sleep, work or study in a room facing away from the project. This is a practical low-cost choice, not a guaranteed or quantified sound reduction.
- Ventilate when outdoor air is cleaner. Open windows on the less exposed side, or run a properly designed mechanical system, during periods when dust and pollution have fallen. Do not leave designed vents permanently blocked.
- Clean settled material with damp methods. Damp-dust hard surfaces and mop floors. Vacuum with a machine fitted with a HEPA filter if available. Cleaning removes what has already settled; it does not prevent new particles from entering.
Reducing dust entry at windows, doors and gaps
Close windows strategically, not indefinitely
During the dustiest operations, a closed road-facing window is usually the simplest way to reduce direct particle entry and traffic noise. Close the associated interior door if that room is not needed, and use the cleanest side of the home for any window ventilation. The right timing depends on local conditions; a blanket instruction to seal every opening for days can create heat, moisture and indoor-air problems.
Do not tape over, stuff or permanently disable designed trickle vents, exhaust grilles or other intentional ventilation openings. If a vent faces a pollution source or noisy façade, ask a qualified professional whether an alternative intake location or a noise-attenuating ventilator is feasible.
Find and maintain uncontrolled leaks
Weatherstripping or a properly adjusted door seal can help where you can identify a worn gasket, daylight around a frame or a door that no longer closes squarely. This is a maintenance measure, not proof that the dwelling has become airtight or that all particles will be excluded. Do not seal combustion-air openings, safety vents or other openings required by the building design.
After the work period, inspect seals for trapped grit and make sure windows and doors still latch correctly. A building professional can use an inspection or pressure-based assessment to distinguish a repairable leak from a ventilation opening that must remain.
Using central HVAC filtration without damaging airflow
Choose the highest compatible filter
For a central forced-air system, EPA advises using MERV 13 or the highest filter rating the system can accommodate. Start by reading the filter size printed on the existing filter and the equipment or manufacturer guidance. A filter that does not fit its rack can allow bypass leakage, while an overly restrictive filter can increase resistance and reduce airflow.
If you cannot verify compatibility, ask the HVAC manufacturer or a qualified HVAC professional before moving to a higher-efficiency filter. The professional should consider the air handler, coil, fan, duct condition and the system’s measured airflow—not just the MERV number.
Run time matters
A central filter cleans air only while the system fan is operating. During a dusty period, a suitable fan schedule can increase filtration, but continuous fan operation may affect energy use, comfort and humidity. Follow the equipment manual and avoid a setting that causes overheating, excessive cooling or condensation.

Replace filters on their actual condition
Road dust can load a filter faster than normal. Check it visually during the project and replace it when it is dirty or at the interval specified for your system. Use the exact dimensions and install the airflow arrow in the correct direction. Keep a spare so a loaded filter does not remain in service while you wait for a replacement.
Choosing a portable air cleaner
A portable air cleaner supplements source control and ventilation; it is not a complete solution for an open window, a large air leak or gases in exhaust. Select a unit by its clean air delivery rate (CADR) for particles and by the room’s floor area and ceiling height. A larger room or a ceiling higher than the assumption used by a sizing chart needs more capacity.
EPA’s example CADR sizing estimates
The EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home gives minimum particle-removal CADR estimates based on an 8-foot ceiling. These are planning values, not a guarantee of a particular indoor concentration or construction-dust reduction.
Recommended Free Tools
| Room area | Minimum CADR estimate | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| 100 sq ft | 65 cfm | Use as a minimum particle CADR for an 8-foot ceiling; choose more capacity for higher ceilings or faster cleaning. |
| 200 sq ft | 130 cfm | Use as a minimum particle CADR for an 8-foot ceiling; a larger unit or higher speed may be needed for an open-plan space. |
| 300 sq ft | 195 cfm | Use as a minimum particle CADR for an 8-foot ceiling; verify that the rated airflow applies to particle removal. |
Check the details that determine real-world use
- Noise at the speed you will actually use: a unit may be quiet on low but much louder at the airflow needed during roadwork. Compare the manufacturer’s published noise ratings where available.
- Filter supply and cost: confirm replacement filters are available for your model and account for more frequent changes during heavy dust.
- Airflow clearance: leave the intake and outlet clear of walls, curtains and furniture. Position the cleaner in the affected room, not behind a sofa or inside a cabinet.
- Ozone: avoid units that intentionally generate ozone. Particle filtration does not make ozone-generating designs appropriate for occupied rooms.
- Gases: particle CADR does not establish removal of exhaust gases. Activated carbon can help with some gases, but EPA notes that there is no widely used performance-rating system for gas-removal filters, so claims require careful qualification.
Higher fan speed and longer operation move more air through the filter, but they also add sound and energy use. Choose a setting that occupants can tolerate and keep the unit running during the period when the source is active.
Cleaning dust that has already entered
Use damp cleaning for hard surfaces
Damp-wipe window sills, ledges, tables and other horizontal surfaces, then mop hard floors. A dry feather duster can redistribute fine material into the air. Wash cleaning cloths separately from ordinary laundry if they are visibly gritty.
Vacuum with effective filtration
A vacuum fitted with a HEPA filter can capture more fine particles than a basic vacuum, provided the machine is maintained and the filter is installed correctly. Empty or replace the collection system according to the manufacturer’s instructions and avoid shaking dusty filters indoors.
Protect soft furnishings
Washable covers and frequently laundered bedding can reduce the reservoir of settled dust in bedrooms. Do not use cleaning as a substitute for source control: a new influx through an open window or gap will quickly add more material.
Ventilation: keep indoor air safe while windows are closed
Closing windows can reduce road dust and direct noise, but it can also allow heat, humidity and indoor-generated pollutants to build up. Cooking, bathing, combustion appliances, cleaning products and occupants all affect indoor air. Keep required bathroom and kitchen exhaust systems operational, and follow the instructions for any balanced or mechanical ventilation system.

Ventilate during cleaner outdoor periods rather than automatically opening the most exposed window. If outdoor air quality is poor for an extended period, ask a building professional or local public-health service how to maintain fresh-air rates without drawing air directly from the road-facing façade.
Locate intakes away from local pollution where feasible
UK Government guidance in the Approved Document F frequently asked questions discusses locating ventilation air intakes away from local pollution and using noise-attenuating background ventilators on noisy façades. The practicability depends on the building, ownership and available elevations. A professional should also consider overheating, moisture, filtration and maintenance access.
Watch for warning signs
- Rooms become uncomfortably hot or humid while windows remain closed.
- Condensation appears on windows, walls or hidden surfaces.
- Occupants experience headaches, irritation or unusual stuffiness that improves outdoors.
- Exhaust fans, combustion appliances or mechanical ventilation behave differently after a filter or vent change.
These signs do not identify a single cause. Restore safe ventilation and obtain qualified advice rather than continuing to block openings.
Reducing construction noise from inside the home
Use the building’s quieter side
Choose a bedroom, office or living space with the fewest windows facing the project. Close the connecting door and place soft furnishings inside the room; these steps may make the space feel less harsh, but they do not provide a tested decibel reduction.
Improve the complete window assembly
For persistent façade noise, a qualified window or building professional can assess glazing, frame seals, wall construction and installation quality. Secondary glazing can add an additional sealed layer, but its performance depends on the air gap, frame, existing window and airtight installation. Do not assume that replacing glass alone will solve noise transmitted through the wall or ventilation openings.
Keep ventilation in the design
A quieter window that forces occupants to keep all ventilation closed can create a different health and comfort problem. Discuss fresh-air provision at the same time as glazing or secondary-glazing work. On a noisy façade, a noise-attenuating background ventilator may be preferable to an unprotected open slot, but the required specification is building-specific.
UK housing guidance treats noise and indoor-air quality as linked design issues. It does not establish a universal decibel reduction for a particular window, ventilator or resident-installed barrier. Site barriers and worksite controls discussed by the UK Health and Safety Executive are intended for managing exposure at the construction site; they are not evidence that a resident can install a barrier and achieve a stated indoor reduction.
Compare the main options before spending money
| Option | Best suited to | Checks before use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Closed windows and doors during peak work | Short periods of visible dust and direct traffic noise | Indoor temperature, humidity and safe ventilation | Not a permanent strategy; it removes a ventilation path. |
| Central HVAC filter | Whole-home particle filtration when the fan runs | Actual filter size, MERV 13 or highest compatible rating, airflow and fan schedule | Only filters while the system operates and may add resistance. |
| Portable air cleaner | One room or a defined zone with particle intrusion | CADR for room area and ceiling height, noise, filter cost, airflow clearance and ozone design | Does not stop entry and particle CADR does not prove gas removal. |
| Damp cleaning and HEPA vacuuming | Dust already settled indoors | Correct filter installation and safe disposal or washing of dusty materials | Does not prevent new particles arriving. |
| Weatherstripping | Identifiable gaps around operable doors or windows | Confirm the gap is uncontrolled and not a required vent | Cannot make a home airtight or replace a ventilation assessment. |
| Secondary glazing or window upgrade | Persistent façade noise and a known weak window assembly | Whole-façade acoustics, frame seals, fresh-air provision, overheating and moisture | Results vary with installation and other transmission paths. |
| Noise-attenuating ventilator or relocated intake | Buildings that need background ventilation on a polluted or noisy façade | Airflow rate, filtration, acoustic performance, intake location and maintenance | Requires design for the specific building; no universal reduction is established. |
Troubleshoot by symptom
Dust is visible on sills soon after cleaning
Check whether a road-facing window or exterior door is being opened, whether a seal is damaged, and whether the central filter is correctly seated. Close the opening during the active work period, use a correctly sized portable cleaner in that room, and damp-clean the surface. If the dust continues with openings closed, inspect other leakage paths and the ventilation intake with a professional.

The air cleaner is too loud to run
Verify that its rating is being compared at the intended fan speed. Move it away from walls and obstructions, then use a larger-capacity unit at a lower speed if practical. Do not remove or modify the filter to reduce noise; that defeats the filtration purpose.
The HVAC system struggles after a filter upgrade
Turn to the equipment guidance and contact an HVAC professional. A higher MERV filter is useful only when the system can move the required air safely. The fix may involve a compatible filter, a service issue or a different filtration arrangement—not simply leaving a restrictive filter in place.
Closing windows causes overheating or condensation
Use cleaner outdoor periods for purge ventilation, operate designed exhaust or balanced ventilation, and seek advice on intake location and airflow. Do not block vents indefinitely to control dust or noise.

Move critical activities to the quiet side first, then request a façade and ventilation assessment. The assessment should include glazing, frames, walls, background ventilators and any flanking path. A single product promise cannot account for all of those routes.
When to involve a professional or local authority
Seek qualified help when dust or noise persists despite reasonable source-control steps, when a central system cannot accommodate the desired filter, or when you are considering window, wall or ventilation alterations. Renters should involve the landlord or building manager before changing windows, vents or mechanical systems. Owners of apartments and shared buildings may need approval for façade work and intake relocation.
Contact the construction project’s designated community liaison or local authority if work appears to create an unusual or uncontrolled nuisance, especially when site controls, working hours or dust suppression appear to be breached. Worksite measures are separate from what you can do indoors, and a resident should not rely on occupational construction-dust or noise exposure statistics to estimate household risk; those figures describe workers under workplace conditions.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
EPA guidance supports reducing outdoor particle entry, checking local air quality, using compatible HVAC filtration and supplementing it with a portable cleaner. It does not measure the concentration inside a particular home beside a particular road project. No verified source establishes a universal amount of dust or a universal indoor decibel reduction from closing a window, buying a purifier, installing secondary glazing or erecting a resident-side barrier.

That uncertainty is why the most dependable plan is layered: limit entry during peak conditions, filter the air that remains indoors, remove settled dust, ventilate with the cleanest available outdoor air, and obtain a building-specific assessment when the problem does not respond. Keep designed ventilation operational and account for occupants who are especially sensitive to particles, heat, noise or poor air quality.
