How to Reduce Household Water Use and Keep Harmful Waste Out of Drains

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use less household water by repairing leaks first, then shorten showers, turn taps off when water is not needed, run full appliance loads, and choose efficient fixtures when replacement is due. Keep hazardous products, grease, wipes, trash, and routinely unwanted medicines out of every drain. Use your local environmental, health, or solid-waste agency for the correct collection route, because disposal rules differ by location. Septic households need the same precautions, with extra care because all wastewater is treated on the property and can affect a drainfield, groundwater, and nearby wells.

A practical first-day checklist

Walk through the house with a bucket, flashlight, food coloring, and a notepad. Complete these checks in order:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Look and listen for leaks. Check toilets, faucet bases, supply lines, showerheads, water heaters, and exposed pipes for drips, dampness, or a toilet that refills when nobody has used it.
  2. Test each toilet for a silent leak. Add a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet to the tank, do not flush, wait 10 minutes, and look in the bowl. Color in the bowl means the flapper or another tank component needs attention.
  3. Stop running water during routine tasks. Turn the tap off while brushing teeth or shaving, and fill a basin when a task does not require continuous flow.
  4. Trim shower time and bath volume. A shorter shower and a partially filled tub usually use less water than a long shower. An efficient showerhead can reduce flow while preserving useful spray pressure.
  5. Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads. Scrape food into compost or trash instead of rinsing it from plates under the tap.
  6. Move waste to the right container. Put paint, solvents, pesticides, oils, batteries, and questionable cleaners aside for local household-hazardous-waste instructions. Put grease, wipes, and trash in the appropriate solid-waste stream, not a drain.
  7. Separate sanitary and stormwater drainage. Never use a street storm drain, yard drain, or outdoor inlet as a disposal point for chemicals, wash water, or oil.
  8. If you have septic treatment, protect the system. Flush only human waste and toilet paper, spread laundry loads through the week, and keep chemicals, medicines, grease, and non-flushable products out of the system.

Find and fix the water your household is already wasting

Check toilets before buying new fixtures

Toilets account for about 25 to 30 percent of household water use, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). A silent leak can waste far more than a dripping faucet: EPA gives an upper estimate of 200 gallons per day for a single leaky or running toilet. Those are general figures, not a promise for a particular home; actual waste depends on the leak rate and fixture.

The food-coloring test identifies water moving from the tank to the bowl without a flush. Replace a worn flapper, adjust the fill valve, or have a plumber correct the cause. If a toilet rocks, leaks at its base, or continues to run after simple parts are replaced, repair the seal or call a professional rather than allowing water damage to spread into the floor.

Inspect faucets, showerheads, and visible plumbing

Feel around faucet handles and connections while the fixture is off. A slow drip at the spout may require a cartridge, washer, or aerator repair; moisture at a supply connection can indicate a loose fitting or failing hose. Check showerhead threads and the pipe behind the escutcheon for staining. Under-sink cabinets, laundry hookups, refrigerator water lines, and water-heater connections deserve the same inspection.

For hidden leaks, record the water meter reading when the household will use no water, wait at least two hours, and read it again. A change indicates flow somewhere in the system. Turn off individual fixtures or the house shutoff to narrow the source, then arrange repair if the leak is not obvious. A sudden unexplained increase in a bill is another reason to investigate promptly.

Change high-frequency habits at no cost

  • Turn the tap off while brushing teeth, shaving, or scrubbing dishes; reopen it only for rinsing.
  • Keep drinking water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap until it becomes cold.
  • Collect water while a shower or faucet warms and use it for plants or cleaning where appropriate. Do not reuse water that contains cleaning chemicals.
  • Run the dishwasher and clothes washer with full loads and select the correct load-size setting when a partial load is unavoidable.
  • Scrape plates into compost or trash before loading the dishwasher. Rinsing every dish under running water can offset the appliance’s efficiency.
  • Use a bowl or basin for washing produce, then reuse uncontaminated water for plants where local conditions permit.
  • Compost food scraps instead of relying on a garbage disposal. EPA identifies composting as a way to reduce water use and keep solids out of plumbing.

Choose efficient replacements when a fixture is due for replacement

Low-flow toilets, faucet aerators, and water-efficient showerheads can reduce flow without requiring a change in every daily habit. Confirm that a replacement fits the existing connection and provides adequate performance; a fixture that does not clear a bowl or rinse effectively may lead to repeat flushes or longer run times. Look for current efficiency certification, such as the EPA WaterSense label, where available, and follow the installation instructions. Repairing a leak remains the priority: an efficient new fixture cannot compensate for water running continuously.

Replace a toilet with an efficient model Moderate to high, including installation Rough-in measurement, flush performance, and local code requirements Persistent problems or end-of-life fixtures

Keep hazardous household products out of every drain

Know what counts as household hazardous waste

EPA uses the household-hazardous-waste category for leftover products with ignitable, reactive, corrosive, or toxic properties. Common examples include paints, solvents and other cleaners, motor oil, pesticides, batteries, and some hobby or automotive chemicals. Mothballs, flea collars, and certain products used around lawns and gardens can also contaminate soil or water if discarded improperly.

Do not pour these products into a sink, toilet, floor drain, septic tank, storm sewer, or bare ground. EPA warns that improper disposal can injure sanitation workers and contaminate septic tanks and wastewater systems. Keep the product in its original, closed container when safe to do so, read the label, and ask the local environmental, health, or solid-waste agency which collection event or facility accepts it. Never mix leftover chemicals to save space, and do not transfer an unknown product into a food or drink container.

Use the product label and local instructions

Acceptance rules are local: one facility may take paint and batteries but not pesticides, while another may require separate appointments. A label may specify a return program or a disposal warning. Call before transporting anything, ask about quantity limits and container requirements, and follow instructions for ventilation and vehicle transport. If a container is damaged, leaking, or giving off fumes, keep people and pets away and contact the local agency or emergency service for immediate handling advice rather than placing it in ordinary trash.

Never use a storm drain as a disposal route

Storm drains commonly carry rainwater toward creeks, rivers, lakes, or coastal waters instead of a household wastewater-treatment plant. The exact drainage design varies by community, but a street inlet is not a safe place for paint rinse water, oil, pesticides, detergents, or other chemicals. Do not dump onto a driveway, alley, curb, or soil in the hope that it will evaporate. Prevent spills, keep containers under cover, and report a significant spill to the local authority listed on the product label or community emergency guidance.

Kitchen drains: grease, oil, coffee grounds, and food solids

Let fats and oils cool, then use solid waste

Cooking oil, bacon fat, and grease can stick to pipe walls, combine with other debris, and contribute to blockages and sewage overflows. Let small amounts cool and scrape them into a sealed container or absorb them with a disposable material before placing them in the trash, following local recycling or collection rules. For a large quantity, contact the local solid-waste program about an oil-recycling drop-off. Do not flush grease with hot water; it can cool farther down the pipe and harden there.

Keep solids out of the plumbing

Use compost or trash for coffee grounds, eggshells, fibrous vegetable scraps, bones, and other solids that a disposal cannot reliably break down. A sink strainer catches some particles but does not make grease or chemicals safe. Scraping plates before washing reduces both water use and the amount of organic material entering a municipal or septic system.

Medicines require a location-specific decision

Do not routinely flush or pour unwanted medicines down a drain. In a septic system, pharmaceutical residues can move toward groundwater; in a municipal system, some compounds can pass through treatment and reach surface water. The risk and the approved disposal route depend on the medicine, the jurisdiction, and current public-health instructions.

Read the medicine label and consult current instructions from your local health or solid-waste agency. Use an authorized medicine take-back or collection option when one is available and accepts that product. Some official programs publish a limited flush list for medicines that pose an immediate danger if diverted; that exception should never be generalized to all medicines. If no take-back route is available, follow the current local or national guidance for preparing the medicine for household trash. Remove or obscure personal information on packaging where instructed, and keep medicines secured from children, pets, and people who could misuse them until disposal.

What changes for a septic household?

Understand where the wastewater goes

Every gallon sent down a pipe enters the septic system. In the tank, solids settle as sludge and fats, oils, and grease rise as scum. Liquid wastewater then leaves for the drainfield, where treatment continues in soil. EPA says conserving water helps the system operate and lowers the risk of hydraulic overloading and malfunctions. Because treatment occurs on-site, contaminants that leave the tank can threaten nearby groundwater, wells, and surface water.

Flush only the routine contents a septic system is designed to receive

EPA identifies human waste and toilet paper as the appropriate routine toilet contents for a septic system. Do not flush wipes, even when a package says they are flushable; diapers; feminine-hygiene products; paper towels; tissues in large quantities; cotton swabs; dental floss; condoms; cat litter; coffee grounds; grease or oil; medicines; household chemicals; or any other trash. These items can block pipes, increase tank solids, damage pumps, or pass into the drainfield.

Choose a mechanical approach for a clog

A chemical drain opener can harm the biological processes that help treat septic wastewater and can create a hazard for anyone opening the plumbing. For a household clog, EPA suggests boiling water or a drain snake instead. Use boiling water only where the pipe and fixture materials can tolerate it, and stop if a clog recurs or multiple fixtures drain slowly. Repeated blockages, sewage odors, wet spots over the drainfield, or backups require a licensed septic professional.

Reduce hydraulic stress

  • Repair running toilets and leaking faucets promptly.
  • Spread laundry and other high-volume water use across several days rather than sending many loads through the system at once.
  • Keep vehicles, buildings, and heavy equipment off the drainfield so soil remains able to absorb and treat wastewater.
  • Do not direct roof or surface runoff onto the drainfield; extra water can saturate the soil.
  • Follow the tank-pumping interval recommended for your tank size, household load, and local conditions.

Municipal sewer, septic, sanitary drain, and storm drain: the key differences

Situation What happens after discharge Safe household rule Extra concern
Municipal sanitary sewer Wastewater travels to a community treatment system, but some chemicals and pharmaceuticals may remain or pass through. Keep hazardous products, grease, wipes, trash, and routinely unwanted medicines out. Protect workers, pipes, treatment operations, and receiving waters.
Private septic system Wastewater is separated in a tank and treated further in an on-site drainfield. Flush only human waste and toilet paper; conserve water and avoid chemicals and grease. Protect the drainfield, groundwater, wells, and living treatment processes.
Indoor sanitary drain Flow enters either the municipal sewer or septic system. Use it only for wastewater the system is designed to treat. A drain cannot make hazardous waste safe.
Outdoor storm drain Rainwater often travels toward local waterways with limited treatment. Keep chemicals, oil, wash water, and debris out. Pollution can reach streams, lakes, or coastal water quickly.

Build a household system that prevents mistakes

Create three clearly marked storage points

Keep a small container or shelf for household-hazardous products awaiting a local collection date, a sealed container for cooled cooking oil, and a secure place for medicines awaiting an approved disposal route. Store each according to its label, away from heat, flames, children, and pets. Never combine products simply because they are destined for the same facility.

Post a drain-disposal rule near sinks and toilets

A short reminder such as “Only wastewater, human waste, and toilet paper” is useful near a septic bathroom. In the kitchen, add “No grease, oil, coffee grounds, chemicals, or food scraps.” Tell children, guests, cleaners, and anyone doing home repairs where each waste stream goes.

Check local instructions before a project

Before painting, treating a lawn, changing motor oil, cleaning a workshop, or clearing out a medicine cabinet, contact the local environmental, health, or solid-waste agency. Ask what the facility accepts, whether an appointment is required, and how the material must be packaged. U.S. EPA guidance is practical for U.S. households, but it does not establish disposal rules for every state, tribe, territory, city, or other country.

Common scenarios and the safer response

  • “The toilet keeps refilling.” Perform the dye test, then replace or adjust the failed tank part. Do not ignore it because the leak is quiet.
  • “I have half a can of paint.” Keep it closed, read the label, and ask the local hazardous-waste program whether it accepts that type and condition of paint. Never rinse it into a sink or storm drain.
  • “A pan contains cooled bacon grease.” Scrape it into a suitable container or absorbent material for solid-waste disposal; do not dilute it with hot water and send it down the drain.
  • “A package says wipes are flushable.” Put the wipes in the trash. Septic guidance treats wipes and other non-flushables as inappropriate, and wipes can also clog municipal systems.
  • “I found expired tablets.” Keep them secure and follow current official instructions for the specific medicine and location. Do not assume flushing is acceptable.
  • “The sink is clogged in a septic home.” Try a plunger, boiling water where safe, or a drain snake. Avoid chemical openers; call a professional if the blockage returns or sewage backs up.
  • “A neighbor is washing chemicals into a street inlet.” Do not copy the practice. Keep your own property free of runoff pollution and contact the local authority responsible for stormwater or environmental complaints.

How to measure progress without overpromising savings

EPA reports that average indoor use in a typical single-family home can reach up to 70 gallons per person per day, and that toilets represent about 25 to 30 percent of household use. These are broad context figures, not a forecast for your household. Track your water meter or utility bill for several billing cycles, noting occupancy, weather, visitors, and unusual repairs. A sustained decline after a leak repair is more meaningful than a one-day reading.

For a septic home, also record pump-outs, backups, drainfield wetness, and unusually slow drains. Lower water use is helpful, but do not restrict water so severely that hygiene, cleaning, or necessary septic maintenance is compromised. The goal is steady, appropriate flow and correct disposal—not simply sending less of every material down the pipe.
