Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The most reliable way to reduce glare and overheating from large glass windows is to control sunlight in layers: identify when direct sun reaches each window, stop as much of it as practical outside the glass, then select glazing or film by both solar heat-gain coefficient (SHGC) and visible transmittance (VT). Add adjustable interior shades so occupants can manage glare and daylight through the day.
There is no universal “best” tint or film. East- and west-facing glass is particularly difficult to control, climate changes whether winter solar gain is helpful, and film must be confirmed as compatible with the exact existing window.

Start with the sunlight pattern, not the window tint
Before choosing a product, document how the room behaves. For each large window, note its orientation, the times direct sun reaches the glass, where glare appears, and whether the main complaint is a hot room, uncomfortable brightness, screen reflections, or all three. Record whether the problem changes by season.

Why orientation matters
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) daylighting guidance identifies east- and west-facing windows as harder to control for glare and heat than north- and south-facing windows. Low-angle sunlight on those exposures can be difficult to block with a simple fixed overhang, and the unwanted sun may arrive when occupants need the room.

A south-facing window can often be addressed with appropriately designed overhangs or other exterior shading, while north-facing glass generally receives less direct solar exposure. These are planning tendencies, not guarantees: nearby buildings, trees, roof geometry, latitude and seasonal sun paths can change the result. Your observations of direct sun should determine the final design.
Define what must be preserved
Write down the daylight and view requirements before selecting a solution. A conference room may need a clear view and useful daylight but strong control during presentations. A bedroom may prioritize low nighttime glare and privacy. A living area may accept some reduction in brightness to avoid afternoon overheating. This priority determines how much visible light can be sacrificed for lower heat gain.
Use the two numbers that describe window performance
Dark appearance is not a reliable performance specification. Compare solar heat-gain coefficient and visible transmittance together whenever you evaluate replacement glazing, a film, or a quoted window package.
| Measure | What it describes | Values and practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Solar heat-gain coefficient (SHGC) | How much solar energy enters through the fenestration. | Expressed from 0 to 1. Lower values transmit less solar heat. DOE guidance says actual fenestration products commonly fall around 0.20–0.80. |
| Visible transmittance (VT) | How much visible light passes through the glass or attachment. | Also expressed from 0 to 1. DOE guidance notes that VT below 0.5 noticeably reduces transmitted light. |
A low SHGC can reduce summer heat while a relatively high VT preserves more daylight and view. Conversely, a dark tint may cut brightness but leave you with a room that feels gloomy even when the heat problem is modest. Evaluate both values for the actual product and glazing assembly, not a sample color alone.
“Windows with low-e coatings, especially spectrally selective coatings, are effective at reducing summer heat gain and air conditioning costs without significantly impacting visible light or color.”
— U.S. Department of Energy, Federal Energy Management Program, Purchasing Energy-Efficient Residential Windows, Doors, and Skylights
A practical sequence for large windows
- Map direct sun. For several clear days, record the time and location of sun patches, glare on screens, and temperature changes in the room. Repeat the observation in the season when overheating is worst.
- Set the daylight and view target. Decide whether the room must retain a clear outward view, bright daylight, or only enough light for normal use. This prevents selecting a low-VT solution that solves heat by making the space uncomfortably dark.
- Check exterior shading first. An awning, solar screen, overhang or suitable landscaping can intercept sunlight before it strikes the glass. Exterior measures generally address the heat at its source rather than allowing solar energy into the room.
- Compare SHGC and VT. If replacement glazing or film is under consideration, obtain the tested SHGC and VT for the specific product and window configuration.
- Add adjustable interior control. Interior shades, blinds or drapery let occupants respond to changing glare and daylight instead of relying on one fixed setting.
- Verify compatibility and installation limits. Film properties and safe applications vary with the exact glazing construction. Follow the film maker’s instructions and ask a qualified window professional when the assembly, warranty or installation condition is uncertain.
- Operate and reassess. Use the exterior and interior layers together, then observe glare, room temperature and daylight at the times that originally caused trouble.
Exterior shading: stop the sun before it reaches the glass
DOE guidance lists overhangs, awnings, solar screens and landscaping as useful exterior measures. Their central advantage is timing: they intercept direct sunlight before it is absorbed by or transmitted through the glazing.

Awnings and retractable shades
An awning can block direct sun while preserving a view through the window. A retractable model allows seasonal or hourly adjustment, which is useful where winter sun is beneficial or where the desired shade changes during the day. Confirm that the mounting surface can carry the loads and that the selected system is appropriate for local wind exposure. The projection, position and operating range must be matched to the window and the observed sun path; a generic size is not automatically effective.
Exterior solar screens
A solar screen filters sunlight outside the glazing and can be useful across a broad window area. Screen openness affects the balance between shade, outward view and daylight, so select it against the room’s stated priorities. Check attachment details, cleaning access and durability before installation, particularly on upper floors or exposed elevations.
Fixed overhangs
A properly designed overhang can provide durable shade with little daily operation. Its effectiveness depends on orientation, geometry and seasonal sun angles. It may work well where direct sun is predictable but offer less control for low-angle east or west sunlight. Coordinate the overhang with rain drainage, wall construction and the desired view.
Landscaping
Trees or other planting can shade exposed glazing without adding a mechanical attachment. The approach requires space, time for plants to mature and ongoing maintenance. Planting location must also account for roots, access, seasonal leaf loss and the possibility that mature vegetation will obstruct the intended view.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsExterior-shading checks before construction
- Confirm the window orientation and the hours of direct sun you are trying to block.
- Check mounting structure, wind exposure and water-management details.
- Decide whether fixed or adjustable shade fits the seasonal heat and daylight pattern.
- Confirm that the selected screen, awning or overhang preserves the required view and access.
- Coordinate attachment locations with cladding, flashing and window warranties.
Interior shades, blinds and drapery
Interior attachments remain valuable because they give occupants immediate control of glare and daylight. They can be raised, lowered, tilted or drawn as the sun moves, which is especially useful in rooms with changing activities.
The limitation is physical: by the time an interior shade is closed, sunlight has already reached the glass. The shade can reduce glare and intercept some radiation before it spreads into the room, but it does not prevent the glazing from receiving solar energy. For that reason, interior control is often most effective when paired with exterior shading or solar-control glazing.
Use reflective, light-colored interiors for solar control
DOE measure guidance recommends high-reflectance, light-colored interior shades or drapery when the goal is to reduce solar gain on the room side. A dark fabric may improve visual contrast or privacy but can absorb more sunlight at the window. Choose the fabric, openness and operation together with the desired view and daylight.

Solar-control film and low-e glazing
Film as a retrofit
Solar-control or low-e film can be considered when the existing windows are serviceable and full replacement is not the immediate plan. DOE materials identify DIY low-e films as a retrofit option, but film performance and application limits differ by product.
Do not assume a film is safe for every large insulated-glass unit. The exact glazing construction, coatings, pane spacing and manufacturer instructions matter. Obtain written compatibility guidance for the specific window, and consider professional installation when the glass is large, difficult to access, unusually coated or still under warranty.
Low-e and spectrally selective replacement glazing
When replacement is already warranted, low-SHGC glazing can reduce solar heat transmission as part of the new window specification. Spectrally selective low-e coatings are designed to reduce heat gain while maintaining useful visible light and color, making them relevant where the room must stay bright.
Replacement is a larger project than applying an attachment. It can involve window removal, interior and exterior finishes, flashing, air and water sealing, and disposal. Evaluate the whole opening and not just the center-of-glass performance. Ask for SHGC and VT values for the complete proposed fenestration and confirm that the frame, spacer and operating type match the project requirements.

Tinted glass can reduce solar gain, but it also transmits less visible light. A darker appearance therefore does not automatically mean a better result. Compare the tint’s VT with the room’s daylight requirement and review the SHGC for the actual product.
Choose differently for cooling- and heating-dominated conditions
Climate changes the desirable balance. In cooling-dominated conditions, a low SHGC is generally favored because less summer solar energy enters the room. In heating-dominated conditions, winter solar gain may be useful, so the lowest possible SHGC is not automatically the best choice for every exposure.

This trade-off is particularly important for fixed exterior shading and replacement glazing. A solution that blocks unwanted summer sun can also limit useful winter sun. Adjustable awnings, screens or interior shades may offer a better seasonal response where both heating and cooling matter.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by darkness alone
A dark tint can reduce visible light without providing the best heat-control balance. Require both SHGC and VT data, and compare the figures with the room’s daylight and view goals.
Putting all the emphasis on an interior blind
An interior blind is excellent for occupant control but does not stop sunlight before it reaches the glass. Add exterior shade or solar-control glazing when overheating is the primary problem.
Assuming one film fits every window
Large windows may use different glass types, coatings or insulated constructions within the same building. Verify the exact assembly and follow the film manufacturer’s compatibility instructions. If those instructions are unavailable or unclear, pause the installation and consult a qualified professional.
Ignoring east and west exposures
East- and west-facing windows are harder to control for glare and heat. A single fixed overhang may not address low-angle sun, so consider exterior screens, adjustable shades or a combination of measures while protecting the required view.
Expecting a universal savings percentage
Available DOE guidance establishes the mechanisms and selection criteria but does not provide one savings figure that applies to every home or building. Results depend on orientation, climate, glazing area, existing equipment, shading operation and the comparison baseline. Measure the room’s actual conditions before and after work if you need a project-specific evaluation.

Construction and installation details that affect results
Large glass areas make attachment and detailing more consequential. Coordinate exterior shade anchors with the structure, cladding and flashing so that the remedy does not create water intrusion. Preserve window drainage paths and allow access for cleaning and maintenance.
For replacement glazing, review the complete opening: frame condition, sill support, air sealing, water management, interior finishes and exterior trim. A high-performing pane cannot compensate for an installation that leaks air or water. Confirm the specified SHGC and VT in the project documentation and ensure the delivered product matches the approved configuration.
For film, clean and prepare the glass exactly as directed, protect adjacent finishes and allow the specified curing period. Large panes make bubbles, edge lifting and alignment errors more visible, so professional installation may be worthwhile even where a product is marketed for do-it-yourself use.
Operate the system as a layered strategy
Exterior shading should handle the strongest direct sun where practical. Interior shades should be adjusted for the occupants’ immediate glare and daylight needs. On days when winter solar gain is useful, retractable exterior shade or open interior treatments can admit it; during overheating periods, close the exterior layer before the sun reaches the glass and use interior control for remaining glare.
After installation, check the same locations and times recorded during diagnosis. Look for direct sun patches, screen reflections, room temperature and whether the view and daylight remain acceptable. If glare is solved but the room is still hot, the project may need more effective exterior interception or a lower-SHGC glazing strategy. If the room is cool but too dark, reassess VT and the amount of shade being deployed.
A decision checklist for your project
- Have you identified each window’s orientation and the times of direct sun?
- Is the primary problem glare, heat gain, or both?
- How much daylight and outward view must remain?
- Can an awning, screen, overhang or landscaping intercept sunlight before it reaches the glass?
- Would adjustable exterior shading be preferable to a fixed treatment because the seasonal requirement changes?
- For film or replacement glazing, do you have the product’s SHGC and VT?
- Has film compatibility with the exact existing glazing been confirmed in the manufacturer’s instructions?
- Will interior shades be light-colored and reflective enough for the intended solar-control role?
- Are mounting, flashing, drainage, wind exposure and maintenance access included in the construction plan?
- What observations will you use to verify glare, temperature and daylight after installation?
The most robust solution usually combines measures rather than relying on a single dark surface: intercept direct sun outside where feasible, select glazing or film using SHGC and VT, and provide interior control for the people who use the room.
