The most effective way to reduce renovation noise is to work through a control hierarchy: make the source quieter, move it farther from occupied rooms, block the direct path with a dense and well-sealed barrier, reduce reflections inside the receiving room, and schedule loud work when people can leave. For drilling, demolition, compressors, generators, and other low-frequency sources, use a tightly closed enclosure rather than relying on a partial screen. Properly fitted hearing protection is a final supplement, not a substitute for controlling the noise itself.
A practical sequence for a quieter renovation
- Ask the contractor to choose the quietest practical equipment, keep it maintained, and isolate vibrating mounts or panels.
- Move generators, compressors, saws, and other loud machines away from shared walls, bedrooms, corners, and occupied rooms.
- Place a tall, wide, continuous temporary barrier close to the source or the room that needs protection. Use dense materials and seal its edges.
- Put absorptive material on the source-facing side of the barrier and add soft, absorptive finishes in the receiving room to reduce reflections.
- Use a complete, tightly closing enclosure for low-frequency or bass-like rumble that a screen cannot contain.
- Schedule the loudest operations for periods when occupants can leave or use a remote room, and limit time spent near the work.
- Wear correctly fitted construction hearing-protection earmuffs when noise remains high.
- Keep the renovation room contained and exhaust air outward. This is primarily a dust and pollutant measure, but closing leakage paths also prevents some sound from traveling between rooms.
The sections below explain how to apply each control, what it can and cannot accomplish, and how to troubleshoot when drilling or demolition noise is still intrusive.

1. Make the noise source quieter before treating the house
Choose quieter equipment and methods
Source control is usually the most efficient first move because it reduces sound before it reaches walls, floors, doors, or occupants. Ask the contractor whether a lower-noise tool, a smaller machine, or a different work method can perform the same task. A tool that produces less sound at the source benefits every room, while a barrier protects only the side of the barrier that it faces.
For repetitive work, ask whether the loudest operation can be broken into shorter runs or performed with a tool designed for the material rather than forcing a high-powered machine to work inefficiently. This is a planning conversation, not a request to compromise safety or workmanship: the quietest practical method still has to complete the job correctly.

Maintain machinery and isolate vibration
Loose guards, worn bearings, damaged cutting surfaces, and poorly adjusted equipment can add rattling and impact noise. Have the contractor maintain machinery and replace damaged parts. Where a generator, compressor, saw, or vibrating panel is mounted to a surface, use appropriate isolation mounts or pads so vibration is not coupled directly into the structure. A machine that is quiet in the air can still make a wall or floor act as a loudspeaker when it is hard-mounted to it.
Do not place machines against walls or in corners
Shared walls and corners can transmit and reinforce sound. Keep noisy equipment clear of bedroom walls, party walls, ceilings below occupied rooms, and corners whenever the work area permits. A small change in placement can reduce the amount of structure that is excited and leaves more room for a barrier between the machine and the rest of the house.
2. Increase distance and plan when people are exposed
Use distance as a free control
In open space, OSHA explains that doubling the distance from a noisy object decreases sound by 6 dBA. The exact result indoors depends on walls, reflections, machinery, and the path between rooms, so do not treat 6 dBA as a guarantee for a particular house. It is nevertheless a useful planning rule: place the source as far as practical from occupied rooms, and move people as far as practical from the source.

If a machine must remain in the renovation area, position it so its exhaust and loudest face point toward the least occupied part of the building, while maintaining all required ventilation and clearance.
Schedule the loudest tasks around occupancy
Ask for a daily schedule that identifies drilling, hammering, cutting, breaking, and other peak-noise periods. Arrange errands, work-from-home calls, naps, and schoolwork outside those windows when possible. If someone must remain home, use the room farthest from the renovation, close its door, and avoid placing that room on the other side of a shared wall.
Scheduling does not reduce the sound level for the people who are present, but it reduces the duration and number of people exposed. It also makes it easier to leave the house during the few operations that cannot be made acceptably quiet.

3. Block the direct path with a dense, sealed temporary barrier
Choose a barrier that adds mass and continuity
A temporary barrier works by interrupting the direct line between the tool and the occupied room. Plywood, plasterboard, or a purpose-made acoustic curtain can be used when they are installed as a continuous, stable surface. Make the barrier as tall and wide as the space allows, and avoid leaving a low gap, an uncovered side, or an opening above the ceiling line. Sound will use the easiest remaining path.
Place the barrier close to the noise source when that is practical, or close to the room that needs protection. The best position depends on access, fire safety, ventilation, and whether the source or receiver is easier to surround. A barrier that is far from both may leave a large open path around its edges.
Seal the perimeter and every opening
Air gaps undermine an otherwise heavy barrier. Seal joints at the floor, wall, ceiling, and adjoining panels. Pay attention to door edges, temporary service penetrations, cable openings, and the gap beneath a partition. Even small air paths can materially reduce barrier performance because sound energy concentrates through the weakest opening.
Use a door or access flap that closes tightly rather than a loose fabric hanging. Keep the barrier stable so vibration does not rattle the panels. Do not block required exits, sprinklers, combustion-air openings, or electrical access; a noise control that creates a life-safety hazard is not an acceptable control.
Add absorption on the source-facing side
Line the side facing the machinery with absorptive material where it can be protected from impact, dust, heat, and moving parts. Absorption reduces the sound that reflects back toward the source and around the barrier. It does not replace mass or sealing, and it does not make a lightweight, leaky partition perform like a solid enclosure.

4. Treat low-frequency drilling and demolition differently
Deep rumble and structure-borne vibration behave differently from high-frequency tool noise. A partial screen may reduce a direct line of sight while allowing low-frequency energy to pass around it or into the building structure. If the dominant complaint is bass-like vibration, shaking, or a thump that remains after a screen is installed, move to a complete enclosure or obtain an acoustic professional’s design.

NIOSH recommends placing noisy machinery inside sealed enclosures and making sure noise is not leaking. Build the enclosure from dense material, line its interior with sound absorption, and provide doors and service openings that close tightly. The enclosure must still provide the machine’s required cooling, combustion air, exhaust handling, operator access, and emergency egress. Never wrap a running engine or tool in a way that traps exhaust or heat.
For demolition equipment attached to walls, floors, or ceilings, an enclosure alone may not solve the problem because vibration can travel through the structure. Combine source isolation, distance, and a sealed enclosure, and have a qualified acoustic or building professional evaluate persistent structural transmission.
5. Reduce reverberation in the receiving room
Use soft finishes to absorb reflected sound
Rugs, curtains, upholstered furniture, acoustic wall panels, and ceiling baffles absorb some reflected sound in the room receiving the noise. They are most helpful when the room has hard floors, bare walls, and a long reverberant decay that makes each drill burst or impact linger. Place treatment on large, hard surfaces rather than scattering a few small decorative items.

Absorption lowers reverberation; it does not stop direct drilling noise from passing through a wall, door, ceiling, or open doorway. If you can hear a tool clearly even when the room is quiet and unfurnished, add a barrier, improve sealing, increase distance, or control the source. Do not promise that curtains or acoustic panels will block transmission loss in the way a dense partition can.
6. Contain the renovation room and control air paths
Seal the renovation room from the rest of the house with a continuous temporary partition and a door that closes. Keep the work area under appropriate outward exhaust so air moves from cleaner occupied rooms toward the renovation and then outside. EPA presents this approach primarily for controlling dust and pollutants; it also closes some leakage paths through which sound travels between rooms.
Do not tape over or obstruct required ventilation, combustion-air supplies, smoke alarms, or exits. Coordinate containment with the contractor so the pressure arrangement does not create unsafe conditions or pull contaminants into occupied spaces.

7. Use scheduling and room choice to reduce time exposed
Noise control is partly an occupancy problem. Identify which rooms share walls, floors, ceilings, ducts, or doors with the renovation. Move sleeping, working, and studying to the room with the greatest separation, and close interior doors during the loudest operations. If the source is directly above or below a room, a horizontal move may help more than moving to the next room across the hall.
For unavoidable peak periods, leave the house, use a library or other suitable location, or arrange a temporary stay elsewhere. Limit time spent beside operating saws, compressors, and demolition tools even when you are wearing protection.
8. Protect hearing when engineering controls are not enough
Construction hearing-protection earmuffs can reduce the sound reaching the wearer when they are selected and fitted correctly. Check the manufacturer’s noise-reduction rating, follow the fitting instructions, and make sure hair, glasses, hood edges, or other objects do not break the seal around the ears. Keep protectors clean and replace cushions or parts that no longer seal.
Hearing protection protects the person wearing it; it does not make the house quieter, prevent noise from disturbing another occupant, or stop vibration from entering the structure. Treat it as a supplement after source, distance, barrier, enclosure, and scheduling controls have been used.
OSHA’s construction guidance identifies a 90 dBA 8-hour time-weighted average as the threshold for the hearing-conservation requirement. That cited requirement governs employers and workers, not a homeowner’s private living room, but it is a useful warning that sustained construction noise can be hazardous. Noise-induced hearing loss is preventable through controls, as emphasized by NIOSH’s 2014 Buy Quiet publication. If you must communicate by shouting at close range, experience ringing or muffled hearing, or cannot judge the level confidently, leave the area and obtain professional advice rather than relying on comfort as a safety test.
Which control should you choose?
| Control | Best use | What it changes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quieter tool or method | Any operation where an alternative is practical | Reduces sound at its origin | Depends on equipment, material, and contractor method |
| Maintenance and vibration isolation | Rattling machinery and hard-mounted equipment | Reduces mechanical noise and structure-borne vibration | Cannot replace a barrier when airborne noise remains high |
| Greater distance | Portable machines and open work areas | Reduces exposure before sound reaches the receiver | Indoor reflections and structural paths limit the open-space rule |
| Dense temporary barrier | Separating a source from an occupied room | Blocks the direct airborne path | Leaks, gaps, and paths over or around the barrier dominate performance |
| Absorptive lining or room treatment | Reverberant rooms and reflected sound | Shortens sound persistence and reduces reflections | Does not block direct drilling transmission |
| Sealed enclosure | Low-frequency machinery, generators, and compressors | Surrounds the source with dense, absorptive construction | Needs safe cooling, exhaust, access, and tightly closing openings |
| Scheduling and relocation | Homes that remain occupied during work | Reduces the time and number of people exposed | Does not lower the source level while work is occurring |
| Hearing-protection earmuffs | People who must be near unavoidable noise | Reduces sound reaching the wearer | Protects the wearer only and depends on fit |
Troubleshooting: why the noise is still getting through
The barrier seems heavy, but drilling is still loud
Inspect the perimeter first. Look beneath the bottom edge, above the top edge, at panel joints, around temporary doors, and wherever cables or hoses pass through. A small open path can defeat much of the benefit of a heavy panel. Extend the barrier to the ceiling or structure, close the access door tightly, and seal service penetrations while preserving safe access.

The room sounds less echoey but the tool is still clearly audible
You have probably reduced reverberation rather than transmission. Keep the rugs, curtains, panels, or baffles if they improve comfort, but add source control, distance, a dense sealed barrier, or a complete enclosure. Absorption is a finishing control, not a substitute for blocking the direct path.
The sound is a deep rumble or the floor and walls vibrate
Treat this as a low-frequency or structure-borne problem. Move the machine, isolate its mounts, and use a complete enclosure lined with absorption. A freestanding screen may have little effect on vibration that is entering the building through a wall, floor, ceiling, or rigid service connection. Persistent structural transmission warrants an acoustic professional’s assessment.
The loudest noise comes through a door or air vent
Improve the door seal and check whether the opening is functioning as a flanking path. Keep required ventilation operational, but coordinate outward exhaust and containment so air and sound are not freely exchanged with occupied rooms. A barrier that stops at a leaky doorway or open ceiling void is incomplete.

People can hear the work throughout the house
Combine controls instead of searching for one perfect product: move the equipment, schedule peak tasks, close and seal the renovation room, add a dense barrier, and treat reflections in the receiving room. Measure success by whether exposure and disturbance fall in the occupied areas, not by whether the work area itself becomes silent.
Safety, rules, and when to bring in help
Construction barriers and enclosures must not block exits, fire protection, electrical access, combustion air, cooling, or safe operator movement. Engineered controls around generators, compressors, and demolition tools should be reviewed by the contractor responsible for the equipment. If an enclosure would trap exhaust, heat, dust, or moving parts, do not build it without a competent design.
OSHA’s noise requirements cited above apply to employers and workers. Homeowners should also check local construction-hour noise ordinances, lease or condominium rules, and building-code requirements because these vary by location. Those rules may determine when loud work can occur even when the work is technically safe.
Bring in an acoustic professional when low-frequency vibration persists, when a shared structural wall or floor carries the noise, when the required barrier would be unusually large or permanent, or when occupants cannot remain safely in the house. A professional can trace flanking paths and design an enclosure that balances sound control with ventilation and access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe result to aim for
Start at the source, then add distance, a dense sealed path barrier, absorption for reflections, and scheduling. Use a complete enclosure for low-frequency machinery and hearing protection for people who remain near unavoidable noise. This layered approach follows OSHA’s practical sequence—“Reduce It… Move It… Block It”—while recognizing that no curtain or wall panel can solve every combination of airborne sound, structural vibration, and leakage.
