How to Read Road-Closure Detour Signs and Follow a Temporary Route

Read a road-closure detour as a sequence, not as one isolated sign: use the advance warning to prepare, take every temporary turn or lane shift shown, obey closure and access restrictions, look for reassurance signs on long routes, and continue until the signed route rejoins the original road. This guide explains the U.S. sign system under the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), 11th Edition, December 2023, with older FHWA guidance identified where it supplies additional route-following detail.

The rules below apply to temporary traffic control for construction, maintenance, utility work, emergencies, and similar activities. State and local agencies adopt and administer the MUTCD, so the exact placement, wording, and access arrangement at a particular closure may differ. On the road, the signs, barricades, flaggers, and other authorized traffic-control instructions you encounter take priority over a route suggested by a phone app.

What a detour sign is telling you

A warning sign and a detour sign perform different jobs. ROAD WORK AHEAD warns that an obstruction, restriction, or work area is coming. It gives you time to reduce speed, change lanes when safe, and expect a different traffic pattern. It does not necessarily mean that your road is closed or that you must turn immediately.

DETOUR, DETOUR AHEAD, or a DETOUR sign paired with a distance legend tells you that traffic will be redirected onto another roadway or route. The first detour sign may be placed before the actual turn, so do not turn simply because you saw the word “DETOUR.” Look for the next arrow, route marker, barricade, or temporary pavement marking that identifies the transition.

A properly signed temporary detour is intended to be followed through the traffic-control zone and back to the original roadway beyond the closure. The route can include several junctions, lane shifts, or changes in direction. Treat each new sign as the next instruction in one continuous route.

Common road-closure and detour legends

Legend or device Meaning What the driver should do What it does not mean
ROAD WORK AHEAD or ROAD WORK Work, an obstruction, or a restriction is ahead. Slow and scan for the next traffic-control instruction. Prepare for narrowed lanes, a shift, a flagger, or a detour. It is not by itself a closure order or a direction to take an unmarked side road.
DETOUR AHEAD A temporary route change is coming. Stay alert for the directional sign or channelizing device that identifies the turn or lane transition. The sign itself may not mark the turn.
DETOUR with an arrow or distance The marked route begins or continues in the indicated direction; a distance legend states how far ahead the action is expected. Follow the arrow at the marked junction and continue looking for the next detour indication. A distance or “AHEAD” legend is not a guarantee that the nearest intersection is the turn unless the directional information says so.
Temporary arrow, route marker, pavement marking, barricade, or channelizing device Shows a specific movement through the work area or onto the alternate roadway. Make the indicated movement only when it is safe and legal, then resume scanning for the next device. It does not authorize crossing a barricade, entering a closed lane, or disregarding a flagger.
ROAD CLOSED The roadway ahead is closed to the traffic addressed by the sign. Stop at the designated decision point and take the signed detour or another route authorized by the traffic-control plan. It is not an invitation to continue if the road appears physically passable.
LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY Through traffic is being diverted, while an agency may permit local access up to a specified point. Proceed only if you are genuinely accessing a destination served by the restricted section and the signs or traffic-control personnel permit it. It does not mean the closed portion is open for through travel or that every vehicle may pass.
Periodic DETOUR reassurance sign Confirms that you remain on the temporary route, especially where the detour is long. Use it as a continuity check while still obeying every intervening arrow and restriction. Its absence does not make an unmarked shortcut lawful or safe.

Advance-warning spacing is not one universal number. The appropriate distance depends on roadway type, speed, sight distance, traffic, weather, and the work-zone layout. A sign that appears earlier on a high-speed road may appear closer on a low-speed urban street.

How to follow the route from the first warning to the rejoin point

  1. Use the advance warning to get ready

Read the complete sign before reacting. If you see ROAD WORK AHEAD or DETOUR AHEAD, ease off the accelerator, create space around your vehicle, and finish any lane change well before the obstruction. Avoid braking hard or making a last-second move when the next instruction becomes visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Find the first marked transition

Continue to the point where a DETOUR arrow, temporary route marker, barricade, pavement marking, or channelizing device directs traffic. The advance sign may be several junctions or a stated distance away from that point. If the arrow points left or right, check mirrors and blind spots, signal, and enter the indicated roadway only when the movement is clear.

  3. Repeat the instruction at every junction

A detour is a chain of decisions. At each intersection, compare the next temporary sign with the roadway you are approaching. Follow the signed direction rather than assuming that the original road’s usual alignment still applies. Temporary markings can move traffic across lanes or onto a connector that is not normally part of your trip.

  4. Use reassurance signs on a long detour

FHWA’s 2009 MUTCD Chapter 6G guidance says periodic DETOUR signs should remind and reassure road users that they are still following the route. Treat those signs as confirmation, not as permission to ignore an intervening closure, speed restriction, flagger, or local-access condition.

  5. Continue through the entire marked route

Do not abandon the detour merely because the road looks clear after one turn. Follow the indications until the temporary route ends or merges back into the original roadway beyond the closure. FHWA guidance calls for a route that road users can traverse all the way back to that roadway.

Understanding ROAD CLOSED and LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY

ROAD CLOSED is a restriction, not a prediction

A ROAD CLOSED sign applies even when you can see pavement beyond the barricade or when another vehicle appears to have gone through. The closure may protect workers, equipment, a missing bridge section, an unsafe shoulder, or a condition that is not visible from your approach. Entering can expose you and workers to hazards and can interfere with emergency access.

Some agencies place an advance ROAD CLOSED warning before the physical closure and a regulatory closure sign at the point where traffic must stop. Read both. The advance sign gives you time to select the marked detour; the point-of-closure sign identifies where continuing is prohibited.

LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY does not create a through route

LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY generally means that through traffic must divert while access may be allowed for residents, businesses, deliveries, emergency services, or other destinations identified by the agency. The exact boundary and permitted users are site-specific. A driver making a local stop should follow any additional instructions, speak with a flagger when directed, and turn around or use the posted alternative if access is denied.

If you are merely passing through, treat LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY as a direction to take the detour. Do not use it to bypass a signed closure because a navigation application predicts a shorter trip.

How to tell whether you are still on the detour

On a short route, the next arrow may appear quickly. On a long route, the agency can use periodic DETOUR signs to maintain confidence at ordinary intersections and decision points. A reassurance sign is most useful when it appears after a turn that could otherwise leave drivers uncertain about whether they should continue straight or change direction.

Look for continuity in three places:

  • At each decision point: an arrow, route marker, barricade, or pavement marking should identify the required movement.
  • Between decisions: the roadway should remain consistent with the marked direction, with additional signs where a driver could reasonably question the route.
  • At the far end: signs should show the detour ending or guide traffic back to the original road beyond the closure.

If a sign is missing, turned, obscured, or appears to conflict with another sign, slow down without stopping in a live travel lane unless directed to do so. Keep a safe path, avoid sudden U-turns or lane crossings, and use the next safe location to reassess. A flagger or law-enforcement officer has authority to give immediate traffic-control directions; follow that direction while you seek clarification.

What you observe Safer response
The next detour arrow is not visible at the expected junction. Reduce speed, continue only where the roadway remains open and clearly controlled, and look for a second sign or channelizing device. Do not guess by taking an unmarked side street.
Two temporary signs seem to point in different directions. Stop at a safe legal location away from moving traffic if necessary, then ask the responsible agency or traffic-control worker. Do not cross a barricade to resolve the conflict.
Your navigation app proposes a shorter road marked ROAD CLOSED. Reject the app’s shortcut and follow the physical closure and detour signs.
You reach an intersection with no reassurance sign on a lengthy route. Do not treat the missing sign as proof that the route ended. Follow the last clearly marked direction, check for the next safe decision point, and obtain current official information when practical.
A flagger’s instruction differs from your expectation based on an earlier sign. Comply with the flagger’s immediate direction and proceed only when released.

How to compare lawful route choices

Sometimes an agency, emergency manager, or official navigation service presents more than one authorized route. Compare those options on practical criteria rather than apparent distance:

Question Why it matters
Is the route authorized and accessible to your vehicle? Weight, height, width, hazardous-material, seasonal, and local-access restrictions can make a seemingly open road unsuitable.
Are the signs continuous and clear? A route with consistent official arrows and reassurance signs is easier to follow than an unmarked shortcut.
Does it reach your intended destination and rejoin the desired road? A legal route that ends at the wrong side of the closure may not solve your trip.
What are current conditions? Queues, weather, incidents, active work phases, and changing access controls can alter travel time and availability.

Never select a route solely because a map predicts fewer miles. Digital maps can lag behind a temporary closure, while the signs installed by the road authority describe the traffic-control arrangement in effect at that moment.

Temporary detours versus permanent alternate routes

FHWA’s Official Ruling No. 6(09)-42 (I), issued April 21, 2017 under the 2009 MUTCD, distinguishes temporary detour signing from permanent diversion signing. Temporary DETOUR signs are used for the duration of the activity that requires traffic to be rerouted. When the work or other activity no longer diverts traffic, those temporary signs are removed.

A permanent or recurring alternate route is handled through standard guide-signing practices rather than leaving temporary orange or pink detour signs in place indefinitely. That distinction matters when you return to a road after a project: an old temporary sign should not be treated as a standing route instruction, and an established alternate route should be identified by the permanent signing provided by the responsible agency.

Preparing before you leave

Pre-trip information can reduce surprises, but it supplements rather than replaces roadside control. Where available, check the relevant state or local department of transportation’s traffic-information service or 511 service for current incidents, planned closures, and expected delays. Availability and coverage differ by jurisdiction; an official service may not show every local restriction.

  • Allow extra time for a route that may include several turns or a queue at the first diversion point.
  • Know your vehicle’s height, width, length, weight, and cargo restrictions before choosing among authorized alternatives.
  • Make navigation changes while parked or have a passenger manage the device.
  • Keep headlights, mirrors, and windshield clear so temporary signs can be read early.
  • Expect the traffic pattern to change during the project; a route that was open on a previous trip may be closed later.

Driving safely through the temporary route

Follow the posted speed limit and any reduced work-zone speed, but do not use a familiar speed as a target when visibility, weather, congestion, or surface conditions require slower travel. Maintain a cushion behind the vehicle ahead so you can respond to a sudden queue or a flagger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stay within the channelized path. Do not move cones, drive on a shoulder or sidewalk to bypass a line, enter a lane marked closed, or pass a stopped vehicle when a flagger is controlling traffic. Workers may be operating immediately beyond a barrier even when the route appears empty.

At night or in poor weather, temporary signs and markings can be harder to see. Reduce speed enough to identify the next instruction, avoid glare from high beams or wet pavement, and do not stop where you block the travel path. If you miss a turn, continue to a safe place and re-enter the route using an authorized connection rather than backing up or making an abrupt turn.

Three typical situations

A closure on a two-lane road

You see ROAD WORK AHEAD, followed by DETOUR AHEAD. Farther on, a DETOUR arrow directs you right before ROAD CLOSED appears at the work area. Turn at the marked junction, follow each subsequent arrow, and remain on the route until signs direct you back to the original road. The advance warning did not itself authorize a turn; the directional sign did.

A business inside the restricted area

LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY appears before the closure. You need a business located before the barricade, while another driver is simply traveling through. The business trip may be allowed if the signs or traffic-control personnel permit access; the through trip must use the detour. Neither driver may continue past the point where the agency has closed the road.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A long rural detour with several intersections

After the first turn, you see periodic DETOUR signs confirming the route. At one intersection, a usual straight-ahead road is open but has no temporary detour indication. Continue according to the marked route rather than assuming the open road is the intended shortcut. If the next sign is missing or contradictory, slow at a safe location and obtain clarification instead of making an unsupported turn.

Which rules govern a particular closure?

The MUTCD 11th Edition, Part 6, dated December 2023, provides the current national framework for temporary traffic-control signs, including advance warnings, ROAD WORK, DETOUR, and closure examples. FHWA’s 2009 Chapter 6G material supplies the specific guidance on periodic reassurance signs and signing a detour so it can be followed back to the original roadway. The 2017 FHWA interpretation explains when temporary detour signs are appropriate and when they should be removed.

The MUTCD is a U.S. standard, not a promise that every state or municipality will place signs in exactly the same sequence. State adoption, local engineering decisions, emergency conditions, and the type of road work affect the arrangement. When an agency’s sign, barricade, flagger, or officer gives a direct instruction, follow that instruction and do not rely on a generalized diagram from another jurisdiction.

Quick checklist for the driver

  • Read the entire advance sign and prepare early.
  • Wait for the directional DETOUR instruction before turning.
  • Follow every temporary arrow, route marker, pavement marking, barricade, and channelizing device.
  • Obey ROAD CLOSED, LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY, speed, flagger, and other traffic-control restrictions.
  • Use periodic DETOUR signs to verify continuity on a long route.
  • Do not substitute a navigation-app shortcut for a posted closure.
  • If signs conflict or disappear, slow down, avoid sudden maneuvers, and seek clarification from a safe location.
  • Remain on the route until it clearly ends or returns you to the original roadway beyond the closure.
