Protect your car by following the signed detour and every instruction from flaggers or temporary signals, slowing before rough ground, leaving extra stopping distance, and steering and braking smoothly. Watch for potholes, loose gravel, ruts, abrupt pavement edges, debris, workers, machinery and water. If the underside strikes the road, stop in a safe, legal place and check for leaks or obvious damage before continuing. When dust, mud or water makes the route impossible to read safely, wait or use an officially open alternative route.
Why a construction detour can damage a car
A temporary route may combine hazards that are uncommon on finished pavement: broken edges, potholes, compacted or loose gravel, deep ruts, narrow lanes, sharp turns, construction vehicles and changing traffic control. The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) says temporary-workplace planning should account for route information, traffic management and checks on unprepared roads. Its guidance is aimed at work sites, but the same principle applies to a driver crossing a signed public detour: the route can change and may not behave like a normal lane. See the HSE guidance on temporary workplaces and unprepared roadways.

Damage risk depends on more than the label “rough.” Vehicle ground clearance, tire condition, vehicle load, impact speed and the shape of the road all affect the result. No source establishes one speed or clearance number that is safe for every car, so adapt continuously to what you can actually see.
A short detour can also demand several decisions in quick succession. You may need to read a temporary sign, identify a flagger’s lane, judge whether a ridge will clear the underside, and leave enough room to stop for a worker or machine. Treat the route as a changing work zone rather than as an ordinary road with a few bumps.

Before you enter the detour
Read the work-zone controls, not just your navigation app
- Slow enough to read advance signs and identify the intended lane. Follow flaggers, temporary signals, cones, barriers and temporary lane markings.
- Do not bypass a closure, move a barrier or follow construction machinery into a restricted area. Temporary routes can change as work progresses; if markings are missing or contradictory, stop at a safe location and seek the direction of the person controlling traffic. The HSE emphasizes driver information and traffic management for temporary routes.
- Expect narrow lanes, sharp turns, uneven surfaces, workers and construction vehicles. Those hazards are specifically identified in the Oregon Commercial Driver Manual’s hazardous-roads section, and they can affect private-car drivers as well.
Use the newest instruction you can see. A faded pavement line may describe the former lane, while a flagger, temporary signal or barrier establishes the current path. If you cannot tell whether a lane is open, do not guess by following the vehicle ahead. Stop only where permitted and ask the traffic controller for direction.
Make a quick vehicle-and-route decision
Consider whether you can see the surface far enough ahead to choose a line, whether the route is officially open and controlled, and whether your car has enough clearance for the visible ruts and edges. Also consider weather, dust, mud, standing water, the vehicle’s load and the availability of a safer official alternative. A detour that is manageable in daylight and dry weather can become unsafe when visibility or traction changes.
Before moving, make a quick visual check of the tires and wheels. Look for an obviously low, damaged or bulging tire and confirm that the car is not carrying a load that reduces its clearance. This is not a substitute for a formal inspection; it simply prevents entering a rough route with an obvious problem already present.
How to drive over rough or unsealed sections
Reduce speed before the hazard
Brake early and arrive at potholes, ruts or broken pavement at a controlled speed. The Colorado Department of Transportation warns that striking a pothole at higher speed greatly increases the chance of damage to tires, wheels and suspension components; its pothole-repair guidance explains the risk. A hard, last-second brake or steering input can create a second hazard, especially where the surface is loose.
There is no universal “detour speed.” Choose a speed that preserves steering control, lets you stop within the visible clear distance and matches the instructions posted at that work zone. Slow further when the surface is wet, dusty, deeply rutted or partly obscured.
Begin slowing while the car is still on the most stable surface you can use. Entering a pothole under heavy braking can load the front suspension; entering while turning can make the vehicle harder to hold in its lane. The practical goal is not to crawl at an arbitrary number, but to arrive with enough control to respond to the next obstacle.
Leave a larger gap
Gravel, sand and dirt can reduce traction. Queensland advises lower speed and more following distance on unsealed roads, while New South Wales (NSW) notes that vehicles take longer to stop and are harder to control on unsealed roads. Apply that advice to the unsealed portion of a construction detour: increase the gap before the vehicle ahead and avoid assuming that dry-looking gravel will stop you like clean asphalt. The relevant guidance is available from Queensland’s driving-conditions page and NSW’s poor-conditions guidance.

The gap also protects your view. A vehicle ahead can throw stones or raise a cloud of dust that hides the next pothole, worker or lane edge. If the gap disappears because traffic compresses, reduce speed rather than trying to regain it with abrupt acceleration.

Use smooth controls
- Ease off the accelerator before a rough patch instead of lifting abruptly while turning.
- Brake in a straight line as much as the route allows; avoid combining a heavy brake application with a sudden swerve.
- Make small steering corrections and keep both hands ready for changes in grip.
- Do not accelerate to “skip” a pothole or rut. Extra speed raises impact energy and shortens the time available to react.
- After clearing an obstacle, return gradually to the intended line rather than making a quick correction toward the other lane or shoulder.
Smooth inputs matter because loose material can move under a tire. A sudden steering change may produce less response than expected, followed by an abrupt regain of grip. Keep the car pointed where the traffic control directs and make only the correction needed to avoid a visible hazard.
Keep the surface in view
Dust can hide potholes, ruts, workers and equipment. Queensland advises adjusting for visibility and stopping in a safe place when conditions cannot be read reliably. If dust, spray or glare prevents you from seeing the path, do not continue simply because the vehicle ahead has disappeared into it. Stop where permitted, wait for visibility to improve or take an officially open alternative route.
Do not use a vehicle ahead as your only guide. Its tires may straddle a rut that your car cannot clear, and its higher ground clearance may give its driver a different view. You remain responsible for judging your own lane, stopping distance and clearance.

Handling the main detour hazards
Potholes and broken pavement
Scan well ahead and position the car so you can approach a visible pothole slowly and without a sharp lane change. Do not cross into a closed lane or toward workers to avoid one. If traffic or barriers leave no safe line, slow as much as conditions and traffic control permit, keep the wheels as straight as practical, and accept that avoidance may not be possible. The objective is to reduce impact speed while preserving control, not to make an aggressive maneuver.
Water, dust or shadow can make a hole look shallower than it is. Treat an area you cannot read as an unknown obstacle, not as a smooth patch. After a hard hit, pay attention to a new pull, vibration, warning light, noise or change in braking even if the tire still appears inflated.
Loose gravel, sand and dirt
Unsealed surfaces can lengthen stopping distances and make steering less predictable. Reduce speed before entering rather than braking hard once on loose material. Leave room for stones thrown by other vehicles, and avoid following so closely that dust removes your view. The Federal Highway Administration’s unpaved-road safety material provides broader context on hazards associated with unpaved roads; a construction detour may be shorter and better managed, but the traction issue still applies.
Stay within the prepared track and obey any one-way or alternating traffic control. A shoulder that appears firmer may be soft, ungraded or close to an excavation. Do not leave the marked route to find a smoother line unless the person controlling traffic directs you to do so.

Ruts, ridges and low clearance
Deep ruts can catch a low-clearance car and leave it high-centered. UNLV’s Rural Roads Driving Safety Guidelines, version 1 (November 2023), advises checking beneath the vehicle for leaks or damage after undercarriage contact. Read the visible shape of the rut, slow before entering it and avoid a diagonal crossing that could place one wheel or the center underside on a ridge. If the route appears likely to ground the vehicle, do not enter it; wait for instructions or choose a safer official route. The UNLV document is available at UNLV’s rural-road driving safety guidelines.

A rut can be a clearance problem even when its bottom looks firm. The high point between tracks may contact the center underside, while an abrupt exit can strike the front or rear. Never rely on momentum to carry a low car through; momentum increases the consequences if the underside catches.
Sharp edges, drop-offs and debris
Temporary pavement edges can be abrupt. Keep a safe buffer from an edge or excavation and follow the marked path rather than drifting toward the shoulder. Treat boards, rocks, metal, cones and loose construction material as obstacles; do not swerve around them without checking the adjacent lane and traffic-control instructions. If a worker or flagger directs you differently from an old marking, follow the current direction and proceed only when the path is clear.
At an edge, a small steering correction is safer than riding the drop-off. If a tire leaves the paved track, avoid a violent pull back onto the lane; follow the work-zone direction and regain the marked path smoothly when there is room. A sudden return can destabilize the car or put it toward workers and equipment.

Construction vehicles may enter or leave the route unexpectedly, and workers can be close to moving traffic. Slow before blind turns, maintain the larger gap and be prepared to stop. Never pass a stopped machine or follow it through a barrier or restricted work area. The Oregon guidance specifically calls out workers and construction vehicles among hazardous-road conditions.
Expect a machine to occupy more space than a passenger car and to have limited visibility. Give the operator time to see you, obey hand signals and do not assume that an apparently stationary vehicle will remain stationary.
Standing or moving water
Do not assume water is shallow because it looks calm. NSW warns that water can conceal a damaged road surface or debris, and that depth or a rising level may be difficult to assess. Avoid floodwater or water of uncertain depth; use a safe alternative or wait for direction. If the only visible path is submerged, the correct decision is not to guess the depth.
Moving water can change the surface while you watch, and spray from another vehicle can temporarily erase your view. If water begins rising or the route’s limits are no longer clear, stop in a safe place before the submerged section rather than turning around inside it.

Do not stop on a blind crest, in a narrow channel or beside an excavation merely to look underneath. Continue only far enough to reach a permitted safe area, and follow any work-zone direction for where vehicles may wait.
Look for obvious warning signs
- A fluid leak beneath the engine, transmission, fuel system or other area.
- A visibly damaged, deflated or bulging tire, or a bent or cracked wheel.
- Hanging plastic, shields, exhaust parts or other components.
- New warning lights, unusual vibration, scraping, knocking or other noise.
- Steering that pulls, feels loose or is no longer centered, or braking that feels different.
UNLV specifically recommends checking for leaks or damage after undercarriage contact. A visual check cannot rule out every hidden fault, so treat any doubt about roadworthiness seriously. Do not crawl beneath the car in an active lane or under a vehicle that is not safely supported.
Decide whether to continue
If there is a leak, a warning light, changed steering or braking, an unusual noise, visible wheel or tire damage, or uncertainty about control, stop driving and arrange a qualified inspection or appropriate roadside assistance. Do not re-enter a live work zone to inspect the underside. If the car appears normal, continue slowly only after confirming that the route ahead is clear and you can control the vehicle.
Recheck the car’s behavior at low speed in the safe area. A steering wheel that is suddenly off-center, a new vibration that increases with speed or a scrape that continues after the impact is a reason to stop, not an issue to “see if it goes away.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When waiting or taking another route is safer
Use a simple five-part check before committing to a rough section:
- Surface: Are the potholes, ruts, edges or debris shallow enough for the car’s visible clearance and control?
- Visibility: Can you see the path, workers, traffic-control devices and the stopping area through dust, rain, darkness or glare?
- Traction: Will gravel, sand, mud or water make braking and steering less predictable?
- Control: Is the route officially open, marked and directed by signs or a flagger?
- Alternatives: Is there an officially open route, or can you wait until conditions improve?
If any answer is unfavorable, do not improvise by driving around a closure or entering an unmarked shoulder. Stop in a legal safe place, follow the controlling instructions and choose the safer available option. Route layouts and traffic rules are location-specific, so signs and directions at the actual work zone take priority over general advice.
Compare an alternative by the same criteria, not simply by distance. A longer paved route with clear markings may be safer than a shorter track with deep ruts, poor visibility or no traffic control. If every route is obscured by dust, mud or water, waiting for the surface or instructions to improve may be the safest choice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical checklist for drivers
- Read advance signs and identify the controlled lane before entering.
- Follow flaggers, temporary signals, cones and barriers; never bypass a closure.
- Slow before potholes, ruts, gravel, mud, water and sharp turns.
- Leave more following distance because loose or wet surfaces can lengthen stopping.
- Keep a clear view; stop or reroute if dust or spray hides the surface.
- Use smooth braking and steering; avoid sudden swerves or hard acceleration.
- Watch continuously for workers, machinery, debris and changing lane geometry.
- Avoid water of uncertain depth or any route where the road beneath cannot be assessed.
- After a hard strike or scrape, stop safely and look for leaks, tire or wheel damage, hanging parts and changed vehicle behavior.
- Stop driving and arrange qualified help if you find a leak, warning light, unusual noise, altered steering or braking, or any doubt about roadworthiness.
What this advice can—and cannot—guarantee
These practices reduce avoidable impact and control risks; they cannot guarantee that a particular vehicle will escape damage. A detour’s condition, weather, traffic control, vehicle clearance, tire condition, load, impact speed and road geometry all vary. Official guidance from the United States, United Kingdom and Australia describes the hazards and defensive actions, but it does not establish a universal safe speed or clearance threshold for every car. Treat the actual signs, surface and instructions at the work zone as the controlling information.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a pothole damage my tires or suspension?
Yes. The Colorado Department of Transportation warns that higher-speed pothole impacts greatly increase the chance of damage to tires, wheels and suspension components. Slow before the pothole and inspect afterward if the impact is significant.
What should I do if my car bottoms out?
Pull over in a safe, legal place away from live traffic and machinery. Look for fluid leaks, tire or wheel damage, hanging parts, warning lights, unusual noises, changed steering or altered braking. Stop driving and arrange a qualified inspection if you find any of those signs or are unsure the car is roadworthy.
Is it safe to drive through water on a detour?
Avoid water of uncertain depth. NSW guidance warns that water can hide damaged pavement or debris and that depth or rising levels can be difficult to judge. Wait or use an officially open alternative route.
How fast should I drive on a rough construction detour?
There is no universal safe speed. Follow the posted work-zone limit, slow before rough patches and choose a speed that preserves steering control and lets you stop within the visible clear distance. Slow further when gravel, mud, water, dust or ruts reduce grip or visibility.
Should I follow the car ahead through dust or a rough section?
No. A vehicle ahead may have different clearance and may hide potholes or workers in its dust. Keep a larger gap and continue only when you can see your own path and stopping area.
Can I use the shoulder to avoid a pothole or rut?
Not unless traffic control directs you. Shoulders may be unprepared or close to an excavation, and leaving the marked route can put you near workers, machinery or a drop-off. Reduce speed and preserve control instead of making an aggressive maneuver.
What if signs and pavement markings conflict?
Follow the current direction from the flagger or temporary signal and treat barriers and cones as controlling. If the intended path remains unclear, stop at a safe permitted location and ask the person controlling traffic rather than guessing.
