Protecting structural steel in a data center or cleanroom requires more than choosing a corrosion-resistant paint. The durable approach combines corrosion-conscious design, correctly specified surface preparation, a paint or zinc system matched to the actual exposure, and an inspection and maintenance plan. Cleanrooms add a separate obligation: the finished surface must support the required particle and chemical cleanliness level and tolerate the site’s cleaning methods. Data centers require control of moisture, dust and gaseous contamination around sensitive equipment. No single coating, thickness or maintenance interval is suitable for every facility, so the final system must be selected from project conditions and the applicable standards.
Why corrosion protection has to start before coating
Steel corrodes when an electrolyte, usually a thin film of moisture containing contaminants, connects anodic and cathodic areas on the metal. In a data center or cleanroom, that film can come from condensation, high humidity, wash-down or cleaning residues. Dust and airborne salts or gases can hold moisture against the surface and make the local environment more aggressive. Corrosion can reduce section thickness, stain adjacent finishes, create loose scale and undermine the coating intended to protect the steel.

Design determines whether a coating can be applied continuously, inspected and repaired. Crevices, water traps, inaccessible welds, sharp edges and tightly packed steel create defects that a good product cannot reliably overcome. ISO 12944-3:2017 describes the basic design criteria for steel structures to be coated with protective paint systems “in order to avoid premature corrosion and degradation of the coating or the structure.” The International Organization for Standardization published that edition in November 2017 and its listing shows it was reviewed and confirmed in 2023.

- Coordinate steel protection with fireproofing, insulation, cable-tray supports, equipment plinths, penetrations and cleanroom wall or ceiling systems.
These are design controls, not a substitute for selecting a system for the site’s corrosion category and operating conditions.
Define the exposure and the steel before selecting a system
A specification should identify where the steel is located and what reaches it. “Indoor” does not automatically mean low corrosion. A conditioned equipment room may have stable air, while a loading bay, chiller area, battery room, process room or space served by an air-side economizer can experience different humidity, contaminants and condensation risk.
Record the environmental conditions
- Normal and abnormal relative humidity, temperature and dew-point conditions.
- Locations where warm, humid air can contact cold steel and condense.
- Exposure to outdoor air, marine salts, industrial gases, cleaning chemicals, disinfectants or process vapors.
- Dust sources, construction dust, battery or generator emissions, and airflow paths that deposit particles on steel.
- Whether the space is occupied, under construction, routinely washed, periodically decontaminated or subject to emergency water release.
- Access limitations that affect application, inspection and repair.
For each steel item, record the substrate and its history: bare carbon or low-alloy steel, hot-dip galvanized steel, zinc-electroplated steel, thermally sprayed zinc or aluminium, sherardized steel, prefabrication-primed steel or an existing painted surface. ISO 12944-4:2017 covers these surface types and their preparation. It defines preparation grades, but its summary does not establish a universal acceptance condition for the substrate before preparation; the project specification must do that.

Corrosion consequences differ between a noncritical architectural support and a primary frame, equipment support, seismic restraint or platform. Establish the required design life, access for replacement, consequences of section loss and whether repairs would interrupt critical operations. Those factors influence the protection strategy and inspection rigor even when the atmospheric exposure appears similar.
Standards that organize the decision
The following standards address different parts of the work. They should be read in full and applied to the project, not treated as interchangeable product approvals.

Design details that reduce corrosion risk
Keep water and contaminants moving away
Give horizontal members, shelves, brackets and base details a path to drain. Avoid pockets behind plates and around stiffeners. Where a detail must retain a sealant, specify a compatible seal and a method for inspecting its continuity. Coordinate drainage with cleanroom pressure regimes and hygiene requirements so that a corrosion-control detail does not create an uncleanable ledge.

Make every surface reachable
A coating specification is only credible if workers can prepare and coat all required faces. Provide clearance for blast or mechanical tools, spray or roller application, and inspection instruments. If a connection will be inaccessible after installation, decide whether it will be fully protected before erection, sealed, galvanized, thermally sprayed or handled by another documented method.
Control edges, welds and transitions
Edges receive less coating coverage than broad flat areas and are common starting points for rust. The steelwork specification should define treatment of sharp edges, weld spatter, undercut, laminations and other discontinuities. Stripe coating of edges, welds and difficult geometry may be required by the selected system; it must be stated in the product and project instructions rather than assumed.
Separate incompatible interfaces
Review contact between carbon steel, galvanized steel, aluminium, stainless steel, fasteners, fireproofing and sealants. The detail should prevent standing moisture and provide a repairable transition. If a zinc-coated part is cut, drilled or welded after coating, define how the damaged area will be repaired and inspected.
Prepare the steel correctly
Preparation controls adhesion and the amount of active corrosion left under the new system. Follow the preparation grade and method required for the substrate and selected coating. ISO 12944-4:2017 is the relevant framework for carbon and low-alloy steel surface types, including existing zinc and paint surfaces.
- Survey the existing condition. Map rust, mill scale, old coatings, oil, grease, salts, dust, moisture, weld defects and areas of section loss. Identify unknown coatings before disturbing them and protect nearby equipment from debris.
- Remove contaminants before abrasive work. Use the project-approved cleaning method for oil, grease, soluble salts and other deposits. A visibly clean surface can still carry residues that impair adhesion or accelerate corrosion.
- Repair the substrate. Correct leaking details, sharp defects, damaged welds and drainage problems. Replace or engineer repairs for steel with unacceptable section loss; coating cannot restore lost capacity.
- Use the specified preparation method. Depending on the system and substrate, this may include abrasive blast cleaning, power-tool cleaning, water cleaning or another documented process. Do not assume a method suitable for bare carbon steel is suitable for galvanized, thermally sprayed or previously painted steel.
- Control the application window. Confirm steel temperature, air temperature, relative humidity, dew point, ventilation and cleanliness meet the coating manufacturer’s written requirements and the project specification. Stop when condensation or contamination can compromise the film.
- Apply the system in the specified sequence. Record primer, intermediate and topcoat products, batch numbers, mixing, induction time, application method, wet-film or dry-film checks and recoat intervals. Stripe-coat details where required.
- Inspect and document. Check surface preparation, environmental readings, visual continuity, dry-film thickness, adhesion or other specified tests. Record defects and repairs rather than accepting a nominal average that hides thin areas.
For galvanized or other zinc-coated steel, avoid aggressive preparation that removes the protective layer unnecessarily. Use the preparation and repair method appropriate to that coating, and confirm compatibility with the proposed paint system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose between paint and zinc protection
Paint systems and zinc coatings are both legitimate protection routes. Selection depends on the steel, exposure, fabrication sequence, access, appearance, cleaning regime and maintenance plan.

ISO 14713-1:2017 covers general principles for zinc coatings on iron and steel and includes hot-dip galvanizing after fabrication or on continuous sheet, sherardizing, thermal spraying, mechanical plating and electrodeposition. It directs maintenance-related guidance to other parts of ISO 12944. Do not call any zinc process universally superior; fabrication constraints and the actual environment determine whether it is suitable.
When comparing paint products, laboratory results generated under ISO 12944-6:2018 can help distinguish systems under the specified test conditions. The standard’s official summary cautions that those results are an aid to selection, not exact information for determining durability. Accelerated test hours therefore cannot be presented as a guaranteed number of operating years in a data center or cleanroom.
Cleanroom-specific requirements
A cleanroom coating must function as part of the contamination-control system. Corrosion resistance alone is insufficient if the finish sheds particles, traps residue, reacts with disinfectants or cannot be cleaned to the required level.

Define the cleanliness target
State the required particle and chemical surface-cleanliness levels for each area, the surfaces included, and the acceptance method. Include steel columns, frames, supports, service platforms and concealed or intermittently exposed surfaces if they can affect the controlled space.
Test the complete surface and cleaning method
ISO 14644-13:2026, published 25 February 2026, gives guidance for assessing cleaning methods against defined particle and chemical surface-cleanliness levels. It addresses expected cleanliness, cleaning-method suitability, compatibility of the surface with cleaning and the appropriateness of the cleaning assessment. Use that framework to evaluate the actual proposed finish, not a generic statement that a coating is “cleanroom compatible.”
Obtain the cleaning chemicals, concentrations, temperatures, contact times, tools, wiping patterns and frequency from the facility owner or commissioning plan. Have the coating supplier confirm compatibility in writing, then perform a representative trial on the specified substrate and full coating build. Inspect for gloss loss, softening, swelling, discoloration, pinholes, cracking, loss of adhesion and residue retention. A finish that survives a single wipe may still fail after repeated cycles or an occasional stronger disinfectant.

Control application and curing contamination
- Isolate construction work from operational clean areas with the approved containment and pressure controls.
- Prevent abrasive dust, overspray, solvent vapor and packaging debris from entering controlled spaces or sensitive equipment.
- Do not release the area until the coating has reached the specified cure and the required cleaning and inspection steps are complete.
- Use low-shedding protection and cleaning tools compatible with the cleanroom’s procedures.
- Seal or repair damage from lifting, drilling, cable installation and later maintenance before the area returns to service.
ISO 14644-13:2026 does not list one universally suitable coating and does not provide detailed material characteristics or a single cleaning method. The facility’s cleanliness target and cleaning procedure remain decisive.

When particle-deposition monitoring is relevant
ISO 14644-17:2021 explains how particle-deposition-rate measurements can be interpreted and applied to vulnerable cleanroom surfaces within a contamination-control program. It can help set acceptable surface particle limits and reduce deposition risk. It does not classify a cleanroom by deposition rate, does not directly cover contact transfer and is not a corrosion standard. Use it only when the facility’s monitoring program calls for that measurement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Data-center-specific humidity and contamination controls
Data centers combine steel, sensitive electronics, continuous airflow and a low tolerance for unplanned shutdowns. Moisture and contaminants may arrive through outdoor air, construction activity, loading areas, battery rooms, generators or poorly controlled maintenance work.
ASHRAE’s Particulate and Gaseous Contamination Guidelines for Data Centers (2009) discusses ISO 14644-1 Class 8 cleanliness, filtration selection for data centers with air-side economizers, and the relationship between dust, humidity, corrosion and ion migration. It defines deliquescent relative humidity as the level at which particulate contamination absorbs enough water to become wet and promote corrosion or ion migration. This is a 2009 guidance source, not a 2026 revision. Before setting operating limits or filtration requirements, check the current applicable ASHRAE guidance, local conditions and equipment requirements.
Translate contamination guidance into steel controls
- Keep structural steel dry and prevent cold-surface condensation through coordinated envelope, insulation and HVAC design.
- Control construction dust and verify that temporary filters, barriers and cleaning protect both equipment and coated steel.
- Inspect areas near doors, economizer intakes, batteries, generators and service penetrations for deposited contaminants and localized corrosion.
- Use the facility’s environmental monitoring to identify excursions, then investigate the steel and coating in the affected zone.
- Do not use an old humidity or contamination number as a universal corrosion threshold; the 2009 ASHRAE discussion must be interpreted with current equipment and site requirements.
Inspection, commissioning and maintenance
Set hold points before work starts
The inspection and test plan should identify who accepts substrate repairs, surface preparation, environmental conditions, each coat, final thickness and repairs. Define the instruments, calibration requirements, sampling locations and reporting format. Include inaccessible steel and pre-erection work so that it is not silently omitted.
Inspect during operation
Use risk-based rounds to look for rust staining, blistering, cracking, delamination, impact damage, water tracks, chalking, chemical attack and damaged sealants. In cleanrooms, include particle or residue accumulation and evidence that cleaning is abrading or softening the finish. In data centers, correlate findings with humidity excursions, dust events or work in adjacent spaces.

Repair the cause as well as the coating
Before touching a failed area, determine whether the cause is condensation, a leak, trapped contamination, inadequate preparation, insufficient film build, incompatible recoating, impact or a design defect. Correct the source, remove corrosion and contaminants to the specified preparation grade, reinstate the compatible system and document the repair. A maintenance interval should be established from inspection history, exposure and the owner’s risk tolerance; the standards and source material do not support one universal interval.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
“Indoor steel does not need serious protection.”
Indoor conditions vary, and condensation or contaminants can create a corrosive film. Reassess the actual humidity, temperature, airflow and contamination sources instead of relying on the room label.
“A cleanroom-approved label proves compatibility.”
Compatibility depends on the complete finish, the cleaning chemistry, contact time, mechanical action and required cleanliness level. Test the proposed combination under the facility’s procedure and document the result.
“More thickness always means longer life.”
Excess or poorly controlled film can crack, solvent-trap or lose adhesion, while thin edges and missed areas remain vulnerable. Follow the system’s specified build and verify it across representative geometry.
“Accelerated testing predicts exactly when repainting is due.”
ISO 12944-6:2018 provides comparative laboratory methods and conditions, not an exact operational life forecast. Use the results with exposure assessment, inspection data and the owner’s maintenance strategy.
“A coating fixes a bad detail.”
Water traps, inaccessible surfaces and damaged steel remain liabilities after painting. Correct the design or substrate first, then prepare and coat it under controlled conditions.
Final decision framework
Approve a protection system only after six questions have clear, documented answers:
- What exposure, humidity, contaminants and cleaning actions will the steel actually experience?
- What is the substrate, and what condition will it be in when preparation begins?
- Does the design permit complete preparation, application, inspection, drainage and future repair?
- What paint or zinc system has an applicable standards and test basis for that substrate and exposure?
- Can the finished surface meet the cleanroom cleanliness target or the data center’s contamination-control requirements without damaging the system?
- Who will inspect, maintain and repair it, using what records and acceptance criteria?
When those answers are project-specific, corrosion protection becomes a controllable part of the facility’s reliability plan rather than a generic product choice. Facility owners and specifiers should consult the complete standards and a qualified corrosion engineer before finalizing the system, especially where steel is inaccessible, contamination-sensitive or essential to continuous operation.
