Start with the module manufacturer’s instructions and warranty, use only an approved gentle cleaning method, and do not climb onto a roof or use high-pressure equipment. Rain may help, but it does not reliably remove every kind of dirt.
Why solar-panel cleaning matters
Dust, pollen, ash, bird droppings and other deposits can block sunlight from reaching photovoltaic cells and reduce energy output. Uneven deposits, such as bird droppings, can also contribute to localized hot spots that may damage a module. The scale of any output loss—and the benefit of cleaning—depends on the system and its conditions, so a universal recovery percentage cannot be promised. NREL’s operations and maintenance guidance discusses soiling and careful cleaning.

Rain is not a dependable substitute for cleaning in every environment. In a study of five utility-scale solar plants in North Carolina, pollen reduced performance at all five sites, and rainfall did not restore performance to pre-pollen levels. That finding concerns those plants and conditions; it does not establish a household cleaning interval. NREL reported the study in 2023.

How often should you clean solar panels?
There is no evidence-based schedule that applies to every home. Decide based on visible or measured soiling and the conditions around your array. Dusty surroundings, recurring pollen, nearby bird activity and the amount of useful rainfall can all affect how quickly buildup occurs. The U.S. Department of Energy frames cleaning frequency as a balance between the cost of cleaning and its likely performance benefit, rather than a fixed calendar interval. DOE’s solar operations and maintenance resources point to established O&M guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- SOLAR PANEL CLEANING BRUSH: Solar panel cleaning brush removes dirt and debris. Works as solar panel cleaner, solar panel brush and solar cleaning tool for efficient solar panel cleaning.
- WATER FED POLE BRUSH: Water fed pole system ensures continuous flow. Ideal water fed pole brush for solar panels and window cleaning pole applications.
- 20 FT EXTENDABLE POLE: Extendable pole allows safe cleaning of rooftops, solar panels and windows. Ideal for high reach cleaning and solar panel cleaning with extension pole.
- HEAVY DUTY CLEANING KIT: Reinforced construction ensures durability and stability. Reliable solar panel cleaning kit, solar panel cleaning equipment and cleaning supplies for solar panels.
- MULTI-PURPOSE CLEANING KIT: Works as window cleaning kit, window washing kit and siding cleaning brush. Ideal for house washing, exterior cleaning and RV cleaning.
- Check for visible deposits such as pollen film, dust or bird droppings, and compare system production over time if you monitor it.
- Consider whether the buildup is persistent and whether it is likely to be restricting light; do not assume every mark requires immediate cleaning.
- Use the system owner’s manual and module maker’s guidance to determine whether and how cleaning is allowed.
How to clean panels safely
1. Check instructions and access before starting
Read the solar-system owner’s manual and the module manufacturer’s cleaning instructions, including any warranty terms. Methods and permitted tools vary by module. If panels are damaged, difficult to reach, or would require roof access, leave the work to a qualified solar maintenance provider. Do not put yourself at risk to clean an array.
2. Use only an approved gentle method
NREL’s general technical guidance identifies plain demineralized water and mild detergent recommended by the manufacturer as a baseline. This is not blanket approval for dish soap, window cleaner, or any particular brush. Use detergent only if the module maker permits it, and follow its directions on dilution and application. Likewise, use a brush or water-fed pole only if the manufacturer approves that tool for the module surface.
For wildfire ash, DOE guidance allows soap and water while cautioning against high-pressure hoses and conventional cleaning products or tools that could affect module surfaces. This advice is specific to ash removal, not a universal cleaning recipe. DOE FEMP’s wildfire guidance explains the cautions.

3. Avoid risky tools and products
Do not use a pressure washer or high-pressure hose. Avoid solvents, abrasives, harsh detergents and conventional window-cleaning products unless the module maker explicitly approves a product. Common rags, towels and brooms can also pose risks to module surfaces; follow the manufacturer’s tool guidance rather than assuming an ordinary household item is safe.
4. Stop if the work is unsafe
If approved cleaning cannot be done from a safe position on the ground, or the panels are damaged or otherwise unsafe to approach, contact a qualified solar maintenance provider. Do not climb onto the roof or improvise an access method.

| Consideration | DIY cleaning | Professional service |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Only consider it when the panels can be reached safely without roof access. | Better suited to hard-to-reach panels or when you do not want to perform the work yourself. |
| Soiling and method | Appropriate only when the buildup and the manufacturer’s permitted method are clear. | Useful when the deposit is difficult to identify or the correct approach is uncertain. |
| Cost and expected benefit | Weigh your time and the risk of surface or system damage against likely performance benefit. | Compare the service cost with the likely benefit; a fixed energy recovery is not established. |
For professional help, look for a qualified solar maintenance provider familiar with your system and the module maker’s cleaning requirements. Service availability varies by location.
