automatic car wash

How to Prepare Your Car for an Automatic Car Wash

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before an automatic wash, close every window, door, roof opening and tailgate; switch off the wipers and rain-sensing function; secure or remove protruding accessories; and read the wash operator’s instructions. The correct gear, parking-brake and power settings depend on whether the vehicle is pulled through a tunnel or remains stationary under a rollover gantry, as well as on your exact model. Use the owner’s manual whenever it conflicts with a generic checklist.

Quick preparation checklist

Use this sequence before you enter the wash lane. It covers the precautions repeated in manufacturer guidance, but it does not replace the instructions for your model or the facility.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Close all openings: raise the windows, shut every door and the tailgate, and close the sunroof or other roof opening.
  2. Stop automatic wiping: turn the wipers off and disable automatic rain sensing if your car has it.
  3. Deal with accessories: secure or remove detachable antennas, roof bars, auxiliary lights and other parts that project from the body, following the owner’s manual and the wash operator’s direction.
  4. Set mirrors and wash-related systems: fold exterior mirrors when your vehicle or the facility requires it. If your car has a dedicated wash mode, read what it changes before activating it.
  5. Identify the wash design: determine whether a conveyor pulls the vehicle through or a stationary rollover/gantry moves around a parked vehicle.
  6. Select the required vehicle state: use the exact selector position, parking-brake state, drive-ready state and driver-assistance settings specified for that wash and model.
  7. Follow the lane attendant: posted signs and the operator’s instructions take priority over a generic internet checklist.
  8. Check the car afterward: test the brakes and remove wax residue from glass, wiper rubbers or camera lenses when your manual calls for it.

BMW’s official FAQ summarizes the governing principle as “Follow the operator’s instructions.” BMW USA car-wash guidance and Volvo’s support page both stress preparing the vehicle before an automatic wash.

Close and secure the vehicle

Check every opening

Walk around the vehicle before joining the queue. Confirm that every side window is fully raised, each door is latched, the tailgate or liftgate is closed and any sunroof or other roof opening is shut. These checks matter even when the wash appears gentle: water can be driven toward seals by moving brushes, spray bars or air dryers. Volvo’s V90 instructions specifically call for keeping openings closed, while BMW and NIO list closed windows, doors and tailgate as preparation steps.

Do not rely only on the dashboard warning that a door is open. Look at the actual glass and latches, because a partially lowered window or incompletely closed tailgate can be missed when you are concentrating on lane positioning.

Switch off wiping and rain sensing

Move the wiper control to its off position before the vehicle reaches the wash equipment. If the car has automatic rain sensing, disable that function as well. Spray and water films can be interpreted as rain, causing the blades to start while brushes or drying equipment are nearby. BMW, Volvo, NIO and other manufacturer instructions repeat this precaution.

After the wash, restore the wiper and rain-sensing settings you normally use. Do not assume that a wash mode will restore every setting automatically; behavior differs by model and software version.

Handle antennas, roof bars and other protruding parts

What usually needs attention

Inspect the roof and body for detachable antennas, roof racks or bars, auxiliary lamps and other add-on equipment. A projecting part can contact brushes, guide rails or drying equipment, and a high-pressure jet can force water around a vulnerable fitting. BMW advises removing detachable add-ons such as roof bars or antennas. Volvo says to secure or remove protruding exterior parts, and NIO asks drivers to tell the operator about roof racks or antennas.

Secure versus remove

There is no universal rule that every accessory must come off. Some equipment is designed to remain installed in a particular wash, while another item must be removed. Check the owner’s manual and ask the attendant before entering. If a part is detachable and the manual or facility requires removal, take it off before the vehicle is aligned with the conveyor. If it cannot be removed, tell the operator so the facility can confirm clearance or reject the wash.

Ford owner-manual material specifically advises removing exterior accessories such as antennas before a wash and warns that high-pressure water can enter the vehicle or damage certain parts. Read the relevant Ford owner-manual guidance for your vehicle rather than treating the warning as a specification for every make.

Mirrors and fragile fittings

Fold exterior mirrors when your vehicle instructions or the operator require it. BMW includes folding the exterior mirrors in its preparation guidance, and NIO gives the same direction. Folding reduces the chance that brushes or guides catch the mirror, but some vehicles have a prescribed position or an automatic-folding behavior that should not be overridden. Do not force a powered mirror by hand unless the manual allows it.

Identify the wash type before choosing a gear

The most important difference is whether the vehicle must move freely. A tunnel or conveyor wash pulls the car through the equipment. A stationary rollover or gantry wash keeps the car in one place while the machinery travels around it. The selector position, parking-brake state and power state can therefore be opposite.

Wash design What happens to the vehicle Settings that may be required Who controls the sequence
Tunnel or conveyor The conveyor or track moves the vehicle through brushes, spray and dryers; the wheels may need to roll freely. Some model instructions call for Neutral, parking brake released, drive-ready state on, Auto Hold off and no brake-pedal pressure. BMW and the 2025 Polestar 4 give this type of direction. The facility’s conveyor controls movement. Follow the attendant’s signals and keep the vehicle aligned.
Stationary rollover or gantry The vehicle remains in one position while the wash frame moves around it. Some model instructions call for Park, parking brake applied and drive-ready state switched off. BMW and Polestar describe this approach for rollover washing. The equipment moves around a parked vehicle; the operator’s posted procedure determines when to stop and exit.

The table shows why a single “always use Neutral” or “always use Park” rule is unsafe. BMW separates tunnel and gantry procedures, and Polestar gives different instructions for tunnel and rollover washing. A facility may also use a design or control system that differs from these examples. Read the manual for your exact model and obey the lane signage.

Tunnel or conveyor procedure

Before selecting a gear, confirm that the wash is a conveyor system and ask the attendant what the vehicle must do. BMW model guidance calls for the vehicle to be in a drive-ready state, Auto Hold off, the selector in Neutral and the brake pedal released. The 2025 Polestar 4 manual likewise specifies Neutral and parking brake off for a tunnel wash. Those are manufacturer-specific instructions, not a universal recipe for every automatic wash.

Once the conveyor engages, do not steer, accelerate or apply the brake unless the operator or an emergency instruction tells you to do so. Keep the wheels positioned as directed so the track can guide the vehicle. If the car stops moving, the lane attendant’s procedure takes precedence; do not improvise by shifting into Park while the conveyor is still engaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stationary rollover or gantry procedure

For a rollover wash, the vehicle normally stays in the bay while the equipment passes over it. BMW says to select Park, apply the parking brake and switch off drive-ready state; Polestar also specifies Park for rollover washing. Again, use those instructions only when they match your vehicle and the facility’s procedure. Some vehicles may require a different power state or brake setting.

Stop at the marked position, keep the vehicle stationary and wait for the attendant’s signal before opening a door or driving away. If the equipment asks you to remain in the vehicle, keep windows and openings closed throughout the cycle.

Use a built-in wash mode carefully

Some newer vehicles provide a dedicated wash mode that groups several settings. The 2025 Polestar 4 wash mode closes windows, switches the wipers off, folds the mirrors and activates air recirculation. It also advises deactivating driver-support functions that could brake unexpectedly or generate unnecessary warnings.

Do not assume another make uses the same name or performs the same actions. A wash mode may not select the correct gear for a particular conveyor, may not disable every driver aid and may not restore your preferred settings when the wash ends. Open the vehicle’s manual or on-screen help, read the mode description and verify the result before entering the bay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Driver assistance and automatic braking

Camera-, radar- or ultrasonic-based assistance can interpret brushes, spray arms or nearby guide rails as obstacles. If your manual or the operator instructs you to turn off automatic braking, parking sensors, lane support or another driver aid, do so for the wash and restore it afterward. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter manual, for example, calls for switching off specified driver-assistance and ventilation functions before an automatic wash. That is a Sprinter-specific instruction, not a list that applies to every car.

Never disable a safety system merely because a generic checklist mentions it. Disable only the functions identified by your own manual or the facility’s procedure, and make sure you know how to re-enable them before leaving.

Check vehicle compatibility and clearance

An automatic wash is not automatically suitable for every vehicle configuration. Mercedes-Benz tells Sprinter drivers to ensure that the wash suits the vehicle and provides sufficient clearance. Check the height and width limits posted at the entrance, accounting for roof bars, antennas, mirrors and any work equipment. If the attendant cannot confirm clearance, use another wash method.

Volvo notes that an automatic wash may not reach every area of the vehicle and recommends supplementing it with hand-washing. This is a cleaning limitation, not a claim that every automatic wash will damage the car. Plan to clean missed areas separately if appearance or access to a particular panel matters.

A Toyota-hosted manual excerpt warns that automatic-wash brushes may scratch the vehicle surface and advises folding mirrors and removing the antenna. The exact Toyota vehicle and manual version in that document are unclear, so treat it as model-specific caution rather than current guidance for every Toyota or every brush wash. Check your own manual for the applicable warning.

What to tell the wash operator

Tell the attendant about anything that changes the vehicle’s profile or controls:

  • Roof racks, crossbars, cargo boxes or work lights.
  • Long or detachable antennas.
  • Loose trim, damaged bodywork or a mirror that cannot fold normally.
  • A vehicle that must remain in a particular mode or has a model-specific wash procedure.
  • Any uncertainty about whether the facility is a conveyor or a stationary rollover system.

Show the attendant the relevant manual instruction if the posted signs and the vehicle’s requirements appear inconsistent. Do not enter until the operator confirms that the equipment is compatible and explains the required gear and brake state.

After the wash: brakes, glass and cameras

Test the brakes before normal driving

Water can remain on brake components immediately after a wash. Polestar advises testing the brakes after washing. At low speed and in a safe area, apply the brake gently to confirm normal pedal feel and stopping response before joining faster traffic. If the pedal feels abnormal, the vehicle pulls, or braking response is delayed, stop and have it checked rather than continuing at speed.

Remove wax residue from critical surfaces

Some wash programs apply wax or a finishing product. Mercedes-Benz’s May 2025 Sprinter manual says to clear wax residue from the windshield, wiper rubbers and reversing-camera lens where applicable. Use the cleaning method specified for your vehicle and avoid smearing residue across a camera or sensor. Confirm that the windshield is clear and that the reversing image is unobstructed before reversing.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using one gear rule for every wash

Problem: Selecting Neutral in a stationary gantry, or Park on a moving conveyor, can conflict with the equipment’s procedure.

Correction: Identify the wash design first, then follow the exact manual and operator instructions. Tunnel and rollover settings are not interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving automatic wipers on

Problem: Water activates the wipers while brushes or drying equipment are close to the glass.

Correction: Switch the wipers off and disable rain sensing before entering. Verify the control after using a wash mode.

Forgetting a roof accessory

Problem: An antenna, roof bar or auxiliary fitting contacts the equipment or changes clearance.

Correction: Inspect the roof, secure or remove detachable parts as directed, and tell the operator about anything that remains installed.

A repeatable pre-entry routine

For regular use, make the preparation a short verbal or visual scan:

  1. Openings: windows, doors, tailgate and roof opening closed.
  2. Wipers: off; automatic rain sensing disabled.
  3. Exterior: mirrors positioned as directed; antennas, bars and other protrusions secured or removed.
  4. Wash type: conveyor or stationary rollover identified.
  5. Controls: selector, parking brake, drive-ready state, Auto Hold and any specified driver aids set exactly as instructed.
  6. Operator: unusual equipment or uncertainty disclosed before entry.
  7. Exit: brakes tested, glass and camera surfaces clear, normal settings restored.

Keep a note of the relevant page in your owner’s manual if you use the same facility often. Procedures can change with a model year, software update or wash design, so recheck the instructions when you change vehicles or visit a different site.

When hand-washing is the better follow-up

An automatic wash is convenient, but it may leave areas untouched. Volvo specifically says that automatic washes may not reach all parts and recommends supplementing them with hand-washing. Use a separate, careful cleaning step for areas the equipment misses, rather than assuming a second automatic cycle will solve the problem.

Choose a different wash or decline the service when the vehicle exceeds the posted clearance, an accessory cannot be secured, the operator cannot confirm compatibility, or your owner’s manual prohibits the proposed procedure. A short delay is preferable to forcing a vehicle into equipment that does not match its dimensions or required controls.

Manufacturer examples and their limits

Source and vehicle context Preparation or wash instruction How to apply it
BMW USA FAQ Close windows, doors and tailgate; remove detachable add-ons such as roof bars or antennas; fold exterior mirrors; deactivate wipers and rain sensors. It distinguishes tunnel and gantry procedures and says to follow the operator. Useful as a checklist example, but use your BMW model’s instructions for the exact control sequence.
Volvo V90 support, updated May 10, 2022 Secure or remove protruding parts, switch off automatic rain sensing and wipers, keep openings closed, and expect that some areas may need hand-washing. Applies to the cited V90 guidance; do not assume every Volvo model has identical controls.
2025 Polestar 4 manual Wash mode closes windows, turns wipers off, folds mirrors and enables air recirculation; driver-support functions may need deactivation. Tunnel guidance uses Neutral and parking brake off; rollover guidance uses Park. These settings are specific to the 2025 Polestar 4 manual and its described wash types.
NIO ET5 instructions Close doors and windows, switch off automatic wipers, fold mirrors, tell the operator about roof racks or antennas, and select Neutral; the instructions also describe a Wash Mode. Confirm the exact sequence in the current ET5 instructions before using a particular facility.
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter manual, May 2025 Check wash suitability and clearance; close windows; fold mirrors and remove an additional antenna; switch off specified assistance and ventilation functions; remove wax residue from glass and camera lenses afterward. This is Sprinter-specific guidance and should not be generalized to passenger cars.
Toyota-hosted manual excerpt Warns that automatic-wash brushes may scratch, and advises folding mirrors and removing the antenna. The exact vehicle and version are not clear in the document; consult your current Toyota manual for applicable instructions.
