How to Prepare BIM Models for Robotic Layout and Field Printing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Robotic layout succeeds or fails before the instrument reaches the slab. The field robot normally does not consume an untouched BIM file: a total-station workflow needs a controlled package of construction points, while a floor-printing robot generally needs simplified, tagged 2D linework. Prepare the model for the exact robot and field software, reconcile coordinates and control, remove irrelevant geometry, label printable and reference information, inspect the published file, and verify the site setup. When the platform supports it, return measured as-built points to the model for QA/QC.

Start by defining the field workflow

“Robotic layout” describes more than one process. Treating every system as if it used the same file, geometry, or setup is a common source of failed exports.

Point-based robotic total-station layout

A robotic total station and field-layout application typically stake selected points: wall intersections, embeds, sleeves, anchor bolts, grid references, equipment locations, or other construction coordinates. The deliverable is usually a point package, sometimes accompanied by a plan or model underlay. The field crew selects points, sets up the instrument over or relative to known control, and guides a prism or target to the calculated position.

Continuous floor printing

A floor-printing robot follows paths on the slab to draw walls, openings, service routes, or other designated lines. It commonly receives a model-derived 2D CAD file rather than the complete 3D model. The export must distinguish lines to print from reference geometry and physical obstacles that the robot must avoid.

Projects using both

Use separate, purpose-built exports even when both workflows originate in the same federated model. A point file optimized for staking is not automatically a safe print file, and a print drawing is not a substitute for the point metadata required by a total-station application.

Confirm requirements before editing the model

Document the target equipment and software before creating views or exports. Ask the field lead for the current import specification, not a format remembered from a previous project.

  • Robot or total station model, prism or target type, and firmware/software version.
  • Field application and its accepted point, CAD, model, or interchange formats.
  • Required units, coordinate convention, northing/easting order, elevation datum, and angle conventions.
  • Whether the application expects project coordinates, site coordinates, a local construction grid, or a transformed file.
  • Required point attributes, layer names, codes, descriptions, line types, and naming rules.
  • Who owns the project control network and who approves the published field file.
  • How measured points, deviations, or as-built information will return to the office model.

Point-layout platforms from Autodesk, Trimble, and Topcon describe model-to-field and as-built workflows, but their formats and setup screens differ. HP SitePrint is a separate example: HP instructs users with a 3D model to convert it to a 2D DXF and add printing information through its plug-in. Treat these as product-specific procedures, not universal standards.

Build a controlled source view

Select the correct level and discipline

Start with the approved floor, ceiling, or layout view for the construction area. Confirm the building, level, phase, design option, and trade. A correct wall on the wrong level is still incorrect field data. For a federated model, identify which authoring model is authoritative for each element and record the coordination issue or revision that governs the export.

Protect the coordinate relationship

Record the model units and the relationship between the project coordinate system and the site control network. Verify origin, rotation, true/project north, elevation datum, and any shared-coordinate transformation. Do not “fix” a shifted file by moving geometry visually unless the transformation is documented and approved; an undocumented move makes later as-built comparison unreliable.

Strip out design-only content

Hide or remove furniture, decorative elements, temporary annotation, duplicate linked models, construction notes, and categories that the crew does not need. Keep context that affects positioning, such as grids, cores, openings, structural edges, or known obstructions. A clean view reduces export size and prevents an operator from selecting the wrong line or point.

Use a repeatable view template

Create a named export view for each level and workflow. Lock visibility, scale, detail level, filters, and phase settings. Store the view with the model revision so another coordinator can reproduce the same selection and explain what was omitted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Classify geometry for the robot

Every object in the export should have an intentional meaning. At minimum, separate three classes:

Class Purpose Typical content Field treatment
Printable or stakeable Construction geometry the robot must transfer Wall faces, layout axes, openings, sleeves, embeds, equipment points Export with the required point codes, layers, or print attributes
Reference-only Context used to interpret the work Grids, room names, nearby structural lines, datum notes Keep visible but prevent accidental staking or printing
Obstacle Physical condition that affects robot travel or line placement Columns, shafts, curbs, stored materials, pits, exclusion zones Identify explicitly in the file and verify against current site conditions

For floor printing, a line that is merely visible is not necessarily printable. Assign the platform’s required print, reference, and obstacle meanings. For point layout, apply consistent descriptions and codes so the crew can filter structural, architectural, and MEP points without guessing.

Make linework unambiguous

Clean duplicate lines, tiny segments, self-intersections, and overlapping annotations. Use readable text and line types that survive the selected export. A wall represented by several nearly coincident edges can produce duplicate marks or make the operator choose the wrong path. Where two trades share a location, resolve the coordination issue before publishing rather than relying on field interpretation.

Coordinate points and control references

Place points on the construction intent

Points should land on the location the crew will actually measure: a wall face, centerline, opening corner, bolt center, sleeve center, or reference intersection. Avoid placing a point on a symbolic family origin when that origin is offset from the physical installation. In a point-layout workflow, tools can place points on Revit families or components, then sort and filter them before export; verify each family’s insertion point and rotation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a controlled naming and coding scheme

Give points stable identifiers that survive revisions. A practical code can combine level, trade, element type, and sequence, provided it matches the field application’s rules. Keep descriptions short enough for the controller display and include a property or schedule that maps each code to the model element.

Check control independently

Control points are not ordinary layout points. Confirm their coordinates, elevation, monument or mark description, and status (primary, secondary, or temporary). Check that the control used for the export is the same network the field crew will occupy. If different trades supplied control, reconcile the files before combining them.

HP states the principle plainly: “The layout accuracy is as good as the accuracy of the control points.” This is a limitation of the entire workflow, not a setting that higher instrument precision can overcome.

Export the correct data package

Export through the target platform’s supported path and retain the native source. File extensions alone do not prove compatibility; two applications may read the same extension with different layer, unit, or attribute expectations.

Workflow Typical input prepared from BIM What must be checked Do not assume
Robotic total-station point layout Point file or direct model-to-field package; sometimes a CAD or model underlay Point IDs, coordinates, elevations, codes, units, coordinate order, and control references That a DXF line drawing contains the point metadata the controller needs
Floor printing Simplified 2D CAD/DXF derived from the selected model view Printable paths, reference layers, obstacles, control points, scale, orientation, and plug-in attributes That the full 3D model or an unfiltered plan can drive the robot safely
Combined coordination package Separate trade exports assembled in a common coordinate system Units, origin, rotation, level, layer visibility, duplicate geometry, and revision status That files from different trades share coordinates merely because they use the same nominal units

An Autodesk University handout describes an example using ASCII TXT/CSV points with a DXF plan underlay. That material dates from 2015, so use it as a workflow illustration rather than current compatibility documentation. Confirm the present import specification with the field software.

HP SitePrint example

For HP SitePrint, HP’s stated preparation is: “If you have a 3D model, convert it into a 2D .dxf CAD file.” The CAD must identify printable elements, known site obstacles, and control points. HP also describes adding printing information with its plug-in to produce a robot-ready file. These requirements apply to that workflow; other robots may require different layers, attributes, or formats.

Inspect the published field file, not just the source model

Open the assembled export in the same viewer or controller environment the crew will use. A model can look correct while the published file is scaled, rotated, clipped, or missing layers.

  1. Confirm identity: verify project, building, level, discipline, export date, model revision, and responsible coordinator.
  2. Check units and scale: measure a known grid spacing or control distance and confirm the expected value.
  3. Check orientation: compare north, grid, and a known control baseline; confirm that the view is not mirrored or rotated.
  4. Check extents: ensure the complete work area is present and that no crop region or export boundary removed required geometry.
  5. Check layers and classes: printable, stakeable, reference, and obstacle content must be distinguishable and selectable as intended.
  6. Check text and symbols: remove stacked labels, unreadable notes, and symbols that could be mistaken for printable paths.
  7. Check duplicates: look for coincident lines, repeated points, and geometry imported from multiple linked models.
  8. Check control: confirm every required control point is present, correctly named, and located in the agreed coordinate system.
  9. Review with stakeholders: have design coordination and the field lead inspect the visualization before release.
  10. Publish one controlled version: archive the source view, export settings, field file, review record, and superseded version.

Use a file name that exposes project, level, workflow, revision, and date without relying on a folder location. Mark the approved file read-only or otherwise restrict casual replacement on the field device.

Prepare for site setup and operation

Total-station setup

The instrument must be positioned and oriented from accurate project control according to the equipment procedure. Check tripod stability, station coordinates, backsight or resection observations, prism constant, target height, and line-of-sight obstructions. Independently verify at least one known point before laying out production points. If the check fails, stop and resolve control or setup rather than applying an offset to the model.

Floor-printing setup

For a SitePrint-style workflow, mark and use the specified control points, station the robotic total station relative to them, track the robot’s prism, and maintain line of sight while it operates. HP’s product page reports an average layout tolerance of ±3/32 inch (±2 mm) and an average floor-level tolerance of ±1/32 inch (±0.8 mm) only under its stated conditions: operation at 5–30 m, an HP SitePrint SMR Prism, High Accuracy Print Mode, and a tested 1-inch total station (Leica TS16/60 1-inch, Topcon GT1201 1-inch, or Trimble S9 1-inch). Those are HP’s conditional figures, not an independent or universal specification.

Account for changing site conditions

Confirm that slabs, columns, stored materials, safety barriers, and temporary works still match the exported obstacle information. A file can be correct on issue date and unsafe after a trade changes the work area. Establish a stop-work rule for lost tracking, blocked line of sight, unexpected obstacles, or a control check outside tolerance.

Return as-built information to the model

Close the loop where the selected platform supports it. Import measured points or deviations into the office environment, map them to the original point IDs, and preserve the field date, instrument setup, and operator. Compare as-built coordinates with design tolerances by level, trade, and element type. Do not overwrite design geometry with measurements; retain both so QA/QC can distinguish an approved deviation from an unverified condition.

Autodesk, Trimble, and Topcon describe workflows for importing field measurements or points back into office software. The exact commands and file formats depend on the current product version, so follow the platform’s current documentation and your project’s approval procedure.

Common failure modes and recovery

Symptom Likely cause Recovery
Everything is shifted by a consistent distance Wrong shared coordinates, origin, or site transformation Stop layout; compare two known control points in both files, correct the approved transformation, and republish.
Elements are rotated or mirrored True north, project north, axis order, or export orientation mismatch Check a known baseline and north arrow, then regenerate the export using the field system’s convention.
Points import but have wrong elevations Mixed vertical datum, units, or target-height assumptions Verify elevation datum and a known benchmark; correct the source or import settings and recheck.
Robot prints duplicate or jagged lines Overlapping linked geometry, fragmented curves, or uncleaned CAD entities Remove duplicates, join or simplify paths as supported, and review the robot visualization before release.
Required walls or points are missing View filters, crop boundary, phase, category visibility, or export layer mapping Compare the source view with the published file and restore only the required content.
Operator cannot tell what to print Reference and printable geometry share layers or have ambiguous styling Apply explicit classes, layer names, line types, and a legend; issue a revised controlled file.
Accuracy check fails on site Incorrect or disturbed control, unstable station, wrong prism constant, or blocked line of sight Re-observe control, inspect the setup and equipment constants, and do not compensate by editing model coordinates.

Point layout versus floor printing

Decision factor Point layout Floor printing
Primary output Discrete coordinates with IDs and attributes Continuous 2D paths plus reference and obstacle information
Best for Anchors, sleeves, embeds, intersections, equipment points, and verification points Rapid transfer of coordinated wall and opening linework to a slab
Critical preparation Point placement, coding, units, elevations, and control network Path cleanup, print/reference/obstacle classification, 2D conversion, and robot metadata
Field dependency Instrument setup, target measurements, and visibility to points Robot tracking, line of sight, clear travel paths, and current obstacle conditions
Quality loop Measured point import and deviation checks Printed-path verification and, where supported, measured as-built return

There is no neutral cross-vendor benchmark establishing that one workflow is universally more accurate or productive. Select based on the construction information to transfer, the available control, the field environment, and the robot/software combination already approved for the project.

Release checklist

  • Target robot, instrument, field application, and current import specification recorded.
  • Correct project, building, level, phase, and discipline selected.
  • Units, orientation, origin, elevation datum, and site transformation verified.
  • Printable or stakeable geometry separated from reference-only content.
  • Known obstacles and exclusion areas included for a floor-printing workflow.
  • Control points checked, named, and tied to the field network.
  • Duplicate lines, fragments, overlapping labels, and irrelevant categories removed.
  • Export opened in the field environment and checked for scale, rotation, extents, layers, text, and missing geometry.
  • Field lead and coordination owner approved the visualization.
  • Revision, date, source view, export settings, and superseded file archived.
  • Site procedure covers control verification, line of sight, tracking, and stop-work conditions.
  • As-built return path and QA/QC responsibility assigned.

Bottom line

Prepare BIM data as a controlled field package, not as a raw model dump. Identify the exact workflow, establish a trustworthy coordinate and control relationship, simplify and classify the geometry, export in the robot’s supported format, inspect the actual published file, and verify the instrument setup against site control. Point staking and floor printing share coordination principles but require different deliverables. The reliable process ends only after field measurements or deviations are captured for QA/QC when the system permits.
