Preparing for a drone delivery usually means confirming the delivery zone in the operator’s app, clearing that zone, moving people and pets away, and following the service’s notifications. You generally do not need to install a landing pad, buy a marker, or prepare equipment. The exact aircraft procedure depends on the provider: Prime Air’s published MK30 process keeps the aircraft above the selected point, while Wing lowers the package into the zone.
Use the checklist below as a household routine, then defer to the instructions shown by the service handling your order. Availability, delivery zones and procedures are address- and operator-dependent.

1. Confirm that drone delivery is available at your address
Drone delivery is not automatically available simply because a retailer offers it in your country or region. Eligibility can depend on your exact address, the operator’s approved service area, the item being ordered and current operating conditions.
Check the operator’s app or checkout
Start in the delivery service’s current app or website. Look for the drone-delivery option at checkout and confirm that your address is eligible. Service footprints, eligible products, fees and order rules can change, so use the current information attached to your address rather than an older announcement or a neighbor’s experience.

Confirm the delivery point before placing the order
Amazon says customers see and confirm their delivery point when placing their first drone-delivery order and may select a different area later. Wing says the home’s delivery zone appears at checkout. Treat the point shown in the app as the controlling location; do not assume the aircraft will use a driveway, garden, roof or another area simply because it appears convenient.
Before ordering, walk to the selected area and check whether you can keep it clear for the expected delivery window. If the app allows a change, choose a location that is easy to clear and visible to household members without requiring anyone to stand near the aircraft.
2. Make the selected zone clear and usable
The preparation task is to create a temporary clear area, not to build a permanent drone installation. Remove movable objects from the zone and its immediate approach area. On a home under construction or renovation, that may include tools, ladders, tarps, loose boards, packaging, buckets, temporary fencing, stacked materials or vehicles that could be moved into the area before arrival.

- Move vehicles, bicycles, toys, garden equipment and other portable items away from the selected point.
- Secure or relocate lightweight materials that could shift in wind, including sheets, plastic coverings and empty containers.
- Keep construction activity, deliveries and waste collection from occupying the zone during the delivery window.
- Check again shortly before arrival; a zone that was clear in the morning may be blocked by a parked car or a work crew later.
Amazon says its drone checks for people, pets and vehicles and may not deliver if it detects a hazard at the delivery location. Prime Air also says the delivery point may be altered if ground hazards are found. A clear area therefore improves the chance that the system can complete the order, but it does not guarantee a delivery.
Do not add unapproved equipment
The operator guidance described here does not require a purchased landing pad, painted marker, parcel box, sign or other special product. Prime Air’s published MK30 procedure does not involve the aircraft touching the ground, and Wing describes lowering the package into a selected zone. Unless your provider specifically instructs you otherwise, focus on removing hazards rather than installing equipment.
3. Keep people and pets away during the flight
Tell everyone in the home when the delivery is expected and choose an indoor or otherwise separate place for people and animals to wait. Children, visitors, contractors and pets should not be sent to watch the aircraft or collect the package while it is operating.
Wing’s stated separation rule
Wing Help instructs customers: “Please keep people and pets at least six feet back until the aircraft has completed your delivery.” That six-foot distance is Wing’s customer instruction. It is not established here as a universal distance for every drone-delivery operator.

Apply the provider’s current instructions
If another service displays a different safety distance or procedure in its app, follow that service’s instruction. In every case, keep people and pets out of the selected zone while the aircraft is working, and do not encourage anyone to approach, reach toward or follow a drone in flight.
4. Understand what may happen at the delivery point
Drone deliveries do not all use the same handoff. The two documented examples below show why you should not prepare as though every aircraft lands.
Prime Air MK30: package released from above
Prime Air’s published MK30 information says the aircraft descends to 13 feet above the selected delivery point, scans for obstacles and releases the package without touching the ground. The aircraft can return to its center if it detects a person too close, a nearby pet or an unexpected object. Prime Air’s operations information also says the delivery point may be changed when ground hazards are detected.
The 13-foot figure describes Prime Air’s stated aircraft procedure. It is not a recommended homeowner clearance and does not describe every delivery drone.

Wing: package lowered into the selected zone
Wing says its aircraft lowers the package into the selected zone. Customers are told to keep people and pets at least six feet away until the delivery is complete, then retrieve the goods after they have been gently lowered and the aircraft has flown away.
Why the distinction matters
A person waiting underneath an aircraft, trying to catch a package or standing inside the selected zone can create the exact obstacle the system is designed to avoid. Let the provider’s automated process finish and use the completion notification as the signal that the package is ready.
5. Follow the notification sequence
Keep your phone available during the delivery window. The operator’s alerts are more reliable than trying to judge the aircraft’s status from a window or by listening for it.

- Read the arrival alert. Confirm that the order is approaching and remind everyone to remain clear.
- Check the zone from a safe position. If a vehicle, person, pet or newly placed object has entered the area, move the obstruction only if you can do so without approaching the aircraft or entering its operating space.
- Wait through the delivery activity. Do not reach toward the drone, attempt to catch the package or stand beneath it.
- Wait for completion. Wing says the package can be retrieved after it has been lowered and the drone has flown away. For Prime Air, wait for the provider’s completion notification and confirmation that the aircraft has departed.
- Retrieve the package normally. Once the aircraft has left and the service indicates completion, approach the package using the route you normally use for the selected zone.
6. If the drone aborts, changes the point or lands
An interrupted delivery is a safety response, not a signal for the household to intervene.

Prime Air says the aircraft may return to its center or choose a safe landing location after abandoning a planned delivery. It also says the delivery point may be altered when ground hazards are detected. Do not chase the aircraft or reposition yourself to intercept it. Read the operator’s notification for the next step and use the listed support channel if the order needs attention.
If an aircraft lands on or near the property
Wing explicitly tells customers not to fix or pick up an aircraft that lands and to call Wing. Keep people and pets away, do not touch the aircraft, and contact the provider through its current support instructions. Do not attempt repairs, move the aircraft, retrieve a package from it or place anything around it.
Other operators may have different recovery instructions. The safe household rule is the same: leave the aircraft undisturbed, keep the area clear and follow the service’s support direction.
Prime Air and Wing: documented differences
The following comparison uses provider-specific information. It should not be generalized to operators whose procedures are not described here.

A practical preparation routine for households
The day you place the order
- Confirm that drone delivery is offered for your exact address.
- Review the delivery point shown in the app or checkout.
- Walk the route to that point and identify anything that could occupy it during the expected window.
- Tell household members, visitors and contractors that the zone must remain clear.
Before the delivery window
- Move vehicles, tools, toys, equipment and loose materials away from the zone.
- Keep pets indoors or in a separate secured area.
- Pause work that would send people into the zone, such as moving materials or cleaning up debris.
- Check for new obstructions created after the initial inspection.
When the aircraft is approaching
- Read the operator’s alert and confirm that the selected area is still clear.
- Keep everyone, including children and visitors, at the provider’s required distance; for Wing, that is at least six feet.
- Do not stand beneath the aircraft, reach toward it or try to catch the package.
After the completion alert
- Wait until the aircraft has flown away and the service confirms completion.
- Retrieve the package from the zone.
- If the aircraft has landed, stopped unexpectedly or appears damaged, leave it alone and contact the operator instead of approaching it.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming the driveway is automatically the delivery point
Problem: A driveway may be convenient, but the provider may have selected another zone or may change the point after detecting a hazard.
Correction: Use the location shown in the app and check notifications for any change.

Preparing a “landing pad” for an aircraft that never lands
Problem: Prime Air’s described MK30 drop remains above the selected point, so a pad does not address the actual handoff. Wing also describes lowering a package into a zone rather than requiring a customer-installed platform.
Correction: Clear the selected area and follow the operator’s instructions. Do not assume a purchased product is compatible or necessary.

Letting children or pets watch from the edge of the zone
Problem: A person or animal can move unexpectedly into the aircraft’s operating area and trigger an aborted delivery.
Correction: Keep them inside or in a separate secure location until the completion notification.
Approaching as soon as the package is visible
Problem: Visibility does not mean the handoff is complete. With Wing, the package may still be lowering; with Prime Air, the aircraft may still be scanning or completing its release.
Correction: Wait for the aircraft to depart and the provider to confirm completion.

Problem: Touching, lifting or repairing an aircraft can create a safety risk and conflicts with Wing’s explicit instruction.

Correction: Keep clear, prevent others from approaching and contact the operator through its current support channel.
What the FAA rules mean for a homeowner
The Federal Aviation Administration describes commercial package delivery under the Part 135 framework. Operators must address certification, airspace authorization, state and local compliance, environmental review and public inquiries. Those are operator responsibilities; they do not create a household permit or a homeowner equipment checklist.
The FAA says package-delivery flight paths must operate under 400 feet. That is regulatory airspace context, not a recommended distance for people, pets or property around your delivery point. Do not use the 400-foot figure to decide where to stand during a handoff.

When to contact support
Use the operator’s current in-app or customer-support route when:
- The delivery point shown at checkout is inaccessible or cannot be kept clear.
- The app reports that the aircraft detected a hazard or changed the delivery point.
- The package is not where the completion notification says it should be.
- An aircraft lands, remains on the property or appears damaged.
- You are unsure whether the delivery is complete or whether it is safe to approach the package.
Describe what you can see without approaching the aircraft. Do not attempt to troubleshoot the drone physically, move it out of the way or retrieve a package attached to it.
