Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe safest way around a bridge construction detour is to treat it as a changing network problem, not a simple mileage calculation. Confirm the closure and vehicle limits with the responsible transportation agency, compare at least two legal routes, check for bottlenecks on each alternate, and choose a departure time with a realistic buffer. Recheck official conditions immediately before leaving and carry an offline fallback.
Start by confirming exactly what is closed
“Bridge closed” can mean a full closure, a scheduled closure during certain hours, one lane operating under flagging or signals, a weight restriction, a width limit, a height restriction, or a detour that applies only to particular vehicle classes. Those distinctions determine whether your normal route is merely slower or completely unusable.

Use the project’s official information first
Check the bridge project page maintained by the responsible department of transportation (DOT), the state or regional 511 service, and notices at the approach roads. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidance identifies 511 systems, project websites, hotlines, changeable-message signs and alternate-route information as important work-zone communication channels.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Record the closure start and expected end dates, including whether work occurs only overnight or on specific days.
- Note lane configuration: full closure, alternating one-way traffic, reduced lanes, a temporary signal or a signed detour.
- Write down posted weight, width, height, axle, hazmat and trailer restrictions.
- Check whether the restriction applies to both directions and whether local-access traffic is treated differently.
- Look for warnings about queues, construction staging, shoulder closures, speed reductions and temporary traffic patterns.
Do not rely on an old social-media post, a previous trip’s route or a navigation-app estimate alone. Construction phases can change the legal and practical route without changing the project’s name.

Build at least two legal candidate routes
Once the restriction is clear, draw two or more routes that avoid the bridge and satisfy your vehicle’s limits. A route that is shortest on a map may be slower, less safe or illegal for a truck, bus, RV or trailer. FHWA’s alternate-route factors include access, capacity, safety, travel time, congestion, pavement, grades, intersections and vehicle restrictions.
What to compare
| Factor | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Total expected time | How long does the route take at your actual departure time, including likely queues? | A longer route can be faster if it avoids a saturated approach or repeated stops. |
| Reliability | Does the route pass through a town, interchange or corridor that regularly backs up? | Predictable travel is often more valuable than a best-case estimate. |
| Legal compliance | Are weight, width, height, length, axle and trailer rules satisfied? | A route suitable for a passenger car may be prohibited for a commercial vehicle or RV. |
| Conflict points | How many signals, stop signs, unprotected turns, merges and difficult intersections are involved? | More conflict points increase delay, stress and crash exposure. |
| Road condition and geometry | What are the pavement condition, lane width, grades, curves and turning radii? | Grades and tight turns can make a route impractical for heavy or long vehicles. |
| Capacity and traffic | Can the alternate absorb diverted traffic, or is it a two-lane road with limited passing? | Detour traffic can eliminate the apparent advantage of a secondary road. |
| Services | Where can you refuel, rest, eat, use a restroom or obtain assistance? | Service gaps matter on long detours and for drivers with fixed break requirements. |
| Other disruptions | Are there another work zone, event, railroad crossing, transit issue or business-access problem nearby? | A second bottleneck can turn an alternate into a worse route. |
Prefer a route that remains manageable under stress
When two routes have similar times, favor the one with fewer complicated turns, better pavement, clearer signing, more capacity and legal service areas. For a family car, a slightly longer route on a well-marked arterial may be preferable to a narrow local road. For a loaded truck or towing combination, a route with gentler grades and verified turning space can outweigh several extra miles.
Check the entire network, not just the bridge
A detour shifts traffic to other roads. FHWA recommends considering concurrent projects on alternate routes as well as nearby intersections, interchanges, transit operations and businesses. Examine the route from end to end rather than stopping at the first road that bypasses the bridge.

Network-impact checklist
- Search every major junction on the candidate route for a separate construction project or lane reduction.
- Check whether a fair, concert, sporting event, parade, school schedule or holiday travel period will add demand.
- Look for railroad crossings and determine whether trains could create long, unpredictable stops.
- Identify bridges, tunnels and low clearances beyond the original closure.
- Check whether transit detours, bus lanes or pedestrian closures alter turning movements.
- Consider access to fuel stations, rest areas, truck stops, repair services and medical facilities.
- Confirm that local businesses remain accessible if your trip includes a delivery, appointment or pickup.
Conditions can change by construction stage and time of day. Re-evaluate the same route if the project moves from shoulder work to a full roadway shift, or if an incident appears on the alternate.

Match the detour to your vehicle
Vehicle suitability is a legal and safety question, not an optional convenience. The 11th Edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices states: “During TTC activities, commercial vehicles might need to follow a different route from passenger vehicles because of bridge, weight, clearance, or geometric restrictions.” TTC means temporary traffic control.
Passenger cars and motorcycles
Confirm lane access, temporary signals, turn restrictions and parking or local-access rules. A navigation app may suggest a residential shortcut that is signed for local traffic only or has a temporary restriction. Follow posted work-zone signs over an app’s instruction.
Trucks and buses
Obtain the vehicle’s current gross weight, axle weights, width, height and overall length before evaluating a route. Then verify those values against every bridge, roadway and turning movement on the detour. A route can have an adequate straight-line clearance but still fail at a tight intersection or a low overpass after a turn.
- Check posted gross and axle-weight limits, including seasonal or temporary limits.
- Confirm legal width for the vehicle and load, allowing for mirrors, escorts and construction channelization.
- Use the actual highest point of the vehicle, including equipment, antennas and loaded cargo.
- Review grades, curve radii, lane widths and turn restrictions for the complete combination.
- Verify hazmat, oversize-load, escort and time-of-day rules with the responsible agency.
RVs, trailers and recreational combinations
Measure the complete combination rather than the tow vehicle alone. Include the trailer’s length, the widest point, the highest roof-mounted equipment and the turning path. Avoid assuming that a route marked “open” for cars can accept a large RV. Look for bridge-clearance signs, narrow lanes, sharp turns, steep grades and places where a trailer cannot safely reverse or turn around.

When information is missing
If a route’s weight, height or geometry is not clearly established, treat it as unverified. Contact the project hotline or transportation agency before departure. Do not use a guessed clearance or a map’s apparent scale as approval for a heavy or oversized vehicle.
Estimate time without pretending it is fixed
There is no universal number of extra minutes that applies to bridge construction detours. Delay depends on the project phase, departure time, queue length, incidents, weather, signal timing and the capacity of the alternate. Official sources in the project area are the appropriate place to obtain current conditions.
A practical time model
Estimate the trip in separate pieces:
- Calculate normal travel time from your origin to the point where you leave the original route.
- Add the expected detour driving time under ordinary traffic.
- Add time for likely queues approaching the closure or joining the alternate.
- Add delays from signals, stop signs, railroad crossings and difficult turns.
- Add a buffer for unfamiliar roads, finding fuel or rest facilities and unexpected work-zone changes.
Use a range rather than one precise number. For example, record a best case, a likely case and a disruption case based on the current 511 or DOT information. This makes the decision useful even when a queue grows after you leave.
Choose departure timing deliberately
Shift away from known peak periods when your schedule allows. A route that is acceptable at midday may fail during a commuter peak, school arrival, weekend event or shift change at a nearby work site. If you must travel at a busy time, increase the buffer and select the route with greater capacity and fewer decision points, even if its distance is longer.

Use a repeatable route-selection method
Writing down the comparison prevents a familiar-looking route from winning by instinct alone.
- List constraints. Enter the closure window, vehicle dimensions, weight, trailer status, required arrival time and any stops.
- Remove illegal options. Eliminate every route with an unverified or incompatible bridge, clearance, weight limit, width restriction or turn.
- Score the remaining routes. Compare expected time, reliability, safety, conflict points, road quality, grades, services and exposure to other disruptions.
- Apply the departure-time test. Recheck each route for the exact date and time you expect to travel.
- Select a primary and secondary route. Keep the second option usable from a known decision point rather than merely memorized.
- Write down the triggers for switching. Examples include a queue beyond a specified junction, a new closure notice, a blocked turning movement or a vehicle restriction displayed on a sign.
For a work crew or fleet, put the route, restrictions, check-in time and fallback in the dispatch instructions. Drivers should know who can authorize a change and which official channel supplies updates.

Recheck immediately before departure and while traveling
Live information matters because a route’s suitability changes with construction stages, time of day and incidents. Before leaving, review the DOT project page, 511 service or official app, current project updates and the message signs on the approach.
Final pre-departure check
- Confirm that the bridge restriction is still active and matches the published hours and vehicle rules.
- Check the selected alternate for crashes, new work zones, event traffic and weather-related restrictions.
- Verify that your vehicle’s height, width, weight and length remain within the detour’s limits.
- Save the primary route, fallback route, agency hotline and planned service stops offline or on paper.
- Tell passengers, dispatchers or customers about the expected arrival range rather than a falsely exact time.
En-route decisions
Continue watching official changeable-message signs and listen for current 511 updates where available. If a sign conflicts with a saved route, obey the sign and reassess from a safe location. Never make an abrupt lane change or illegal turn to follow an outdated instruction.
Keep an offline backup
Cellular coverage, phone batteries and navigation services can fail precisely where a detour is most confusing. The official AAA 2026 Road Atlas covers the United States, Canada and Mexico, includes highway exits and has 144 pages. It provides broad offline orientation when an app or signal is unavailable, but it cannot replace current closure information.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the atlas to understand regional connections, identify a broad fallback corridor and locate towns or highway exits. Confirm every current restriction through the responsible DOT or 511 service before relying on that corridor.
Use digital trip-planning tools for complex itineraries
AAA TripTik can support point-to-point routing, detour avoidance, fuel, lodging, attractions and multiple stops. Its current road-trip planning service supports up to 25 stops, and its map gallery contains more than 400 digital maps. Those functions are useful when a bridge closure affects a trip with deliveries, overnight stays or several planned stops.
How to use a planner without surrendering judgment
- Enter the origin, destination and every required stop, then identify the closed bridge as an area to avoid.
- Create at least two route versions, such as a higher-capacity highway option and a lower-speed local option.
- Review the route for bridge clearances, weight limits, road geometry and construction notices independently.
- Adjust the departure time and compare the resulting travel ranges.
- Save the selected route and a fallback for offline reference, then recheck official conditions immediately before departure.
A planner can organize choices, but it does not authorize a vehicle to use a restricted road. Posted signs and current transportation-agency instructions control.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Failure | What happened | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing the shortest alternate | The route has low capacity, many signals or heavy diverted traffic. | Compare reliability, conflict points and capacity, not miles alone. |
| Using a car route for a truck or RV | The alternate has a low bridge, weight limit, narrow lane or impossible turn. | Verify dimensions, weights and geometry for the complete vehicle combination. |
| Checking only the original closure | A second project, event or railroad crossing blocks the detour. | Inspect the complete alternate network and nearby intersections. |
| Trusting an old route estimate | Construction moved to a new phase or an incident created a queue. | Recheck DOT, 511 and official project updates immediately before departure and en route. |
| Leaving without a fallback | Cellular service fails or the alternate becomes blocked. | Carry the 2026 paper atlas or another offline map and record a second route. |
| Stopping in the work zone to reroute | The driver makes a sudden maneuver or blocks traffic. | Continue to a safe legal stopping place before changing the plan. |
A compact checklist for departure day
- Closure dates, hours and directions confirmed through the official DOT or 511 source.
- Weight, width, height, length and turning requirements checked for the actual vehicle.
- At least two legal routes compared for time, reliability, safety, capacity, services and road geometry.
- Other projects, events, railroad crossings, transit changes and bottlenecks checked on each route.
- Peak-period conditions and a realistic time range considered.
- Primary route, fallback route, service stops and agency contact saved offline.
- Current conditions rechecked immediately before leaving.
- Passengers, dispatchers or customers given an arrival range and the route-switch triggers.
Bottom line
Plan a bridge construction detour as a vehicle-specific, time-sensitive route decision. Confirm the restriction, eliminate routes that fail clearance or weight rules, compare the full network, build a primary and fallback route, and rely on current DOT and 511 information for the final call. A paper atlas and a saved offline route protect you when live navigation is unavailable, while disciplined checks keep a legal detour from becoming an unsafe one.
