Follow signed detours, allow extra time, and keep a backup route or entrance in mind. If the published alternative is not accessible or does not work for your circumstances, contact campus facilities or disability-support staff for a workable option. Recheck the information close to departure because construction dates and routes can change.
Start with the college’s official construction information
Search your institution’s website for its facilities, capital projects, transportation, or construction-alerts page. A general campus map, an old project announcement, or a navigation app may not reflect a closure that began today. The official source is the best place to confirm what is open, what is blocked, and how long the change is expected to last.

Find the map or alert page
Universities use different names for the same function. Idaho directs users to a campus construction map for current closures and reroutings. Colorado State University groups its alerts by roads and parking, pedestrian and bicycle impacts, and building access. The University of Colorado Boulder uses a construction-information page known as the Cone Zone. Your college may publish one map, several project pages, or a central alert page that links to project-specific notices.
Bookmark the page you find, but do not assume a saved page is current. Look for a publication date, an “updated” date, a project phase, or a notice that says the schedule is approximate.

Read the notice for the date and phase
Construction impacts often change as work moves from utility installation to demolition, structural work, paving, or restoration. Confirm that the notice covers the day and time you will travel. A closure listed for weekdays may not apply on weekends, while a temporary opening may be limited to a particular phase of the work.
Colorado State and Idaho both warn that timelines can shift or are approximate. Treat an end date as a planning estimate rather than a guarantee. If your trip is important, check again immediately before leaving.
Read beyond the headline
A notice titled “sidewalk closure” may also change a building entrance, service drive, bus stop, loading area, or accessible route. Wright State University’s 2026 construction notice, for example, described rerouted vehicle access, a relocated bus stop, and possible pedestrian-walkway closures. Those secondary effects can matter more than the named closure if you are arriving by bus, driving to a permit area, or using a mobility device.
| Item to confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Closure location and effective dates | Identifies whether the restriction affects your trip rather than a different project phase. |
| Destination building and open entrances | Your usual door may be closed even when the building remains open. |
| Accessible route, elevator or ramp status | A detour must be usable for the person traveling, not merely shorter on a map. |
| Parking lots, permits and service drives | A lot can remain open while its approach or pedestrian connection is blocked. |
| Bus stops and transit patterns | A relocated stop can add distance or change the direction from which you reach the building. |
| Bicycle paths, racks and crossings | A route that works on foot may be unsuitable or prohibited for cycling. |
| Project contact and reporting method | Gives you a way to resolve an unclear or unusable detour. |
Plan the whole journey, not only the closed sidewalk
Plan from your starting point to the exact room, office, service counter, or event entrance. Trace each part of the trip on the current map and compare it with the conditions described in the notice.
Walking
Identify the nearest open entrance to your destination, then follow the mapped pedestrian detour to that door. Check whether the route crosses a roadway, narrows near fencing, uses a temporary walkway, or requires stairs. Do not cut through a work area because it appears to be the shortest line between two points.
Cycling
Look for a bicycle-specific route rather than assuming a pedestrian detour permits riding. A path may be open to walkers but too narrow for bicycles, or the project may require dismounting at a crossing. Confirm where you can leave or secure your bicycle if the usual rack is inside the closure.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Driving and parking
Check the approach to the lot, not just whether the lot is marked open. Road closures can force traffic onto a different entrance, remove a turning movement, or make a service drive one-way. Confirm permit rules, temporary lots, drop-off areas, and the walking connection from the vehicle to the building. If you are dropping off someone who needs a close entrance, verify where the vehicle may stop without blocking construction traffic or emergency access.

Campus and public transit
Compare the stop shown in your normal trip planner with the construction notice. A relocated stop may be several blocks away or served from the opposite direction. Check the final walking segment from the replacement stop and allow time for a missed connection. If the notice does not identify the stop clearly, ask transportation or facilities staff before you travel.
Building access
Some projects close one entrance while keeping the building open through another. Confirm that the alternate entrance is unlocked during your arrival time and leads to the area you need. An entrance on the opposite side may require a different elevator, security check, or after-hours procedure.
Choose a route that is workable, safe and realistic
When two alternatives are available, compare more than distance. A route is suitable only if it is open on the day, reaches the right destination, can be used by you, keeps you separated from work areas, and fits your travel mode.
| Decision question | What to check |
|---|---|
| Will it be open? | Match the route to the notice’s effective date, hours and project phase. |
| Does it reach the correct door? | Confirm the building entrance, room access and any security or after-hours restrictions. |
| Can I use it? | Check slopes, stairs, surface quality, curb cuts, elevator availability and space for mobility or sensory needs. |
| Is it separated from construction? | Use barriers, marked crossings and signed detours; never enter a restricted area. |
| Does it fit my mode? | Verify rules for walking, cycling, driving, parking and transit instead of transferring assumptions between modes. |
| How much extra time does it require? | Account for added distance, finding a new entrance, waiting for transit and possible wayfinding delays. |
Follow signs and stay out of work zones
On-site conditions can change faster than a web page. Follow the arrows, barricades and temporary signs you encounter, even if they differ from the route you used last week. If a sign and an online map appear to conflict, choose the signed safe path and report the discrepancy to the project or facilities contact.

What safe detours look like
SUNY Old Westbury’s construction-notification policy calls for visible warning signs, restricted construction areas and alternate safe pathways. Michigan State describes using signed detours when a closure is necessary. Look for a continuous route with clear separation from equipment, materials and open excavations. Do not move a fence, walk beneath suspended work, or use a driveway marked for construction vehicles.
When the marked path disappears
Stop before entering an unmarked area. Retrace your steps to the last sign and look for another arrow, entrance or crossing. If no safe route is apparent, contact the facilities or project office named in the notice. Give the exact location, the direction you were traveling and the sign or barrier that created the problem so staff can respond quickly.
Arrange an accessible alternative before you travel
An accessible route is part of the project plan, not an optional convenience. A detour that adds stairs, steep grades, uneven surfaces, narrow clearances or a closed elevator may be unusable even when it is safe for someone else.
Check the details that affect access
- Whether the route is step-free and has usable curb cuts.
- Whether ramps, elevators and automatic doors are open during your travel time.
- Whether the temporary surface is firm, wide enough and free of equipment or stored materials.
- Whether signs and barriers can be detected and followed by people with visual, hearing or cognitive disabilities.
- Whether the alternate entrance provides the same building access, security arrangements and interior connection.
Old Westbury’s May 31, 2017 policy says its procedures are “designed to assist the Campus Community, including visually and mobility impaired students, faculty and staff, in navigating around temporary construction barriers and detours impacting paths of travel during the completion of a capital project.” It also describes consultation with students with disabilities and feedback on notification. The policy is one institution’s example, not a universal standard, but it shows the kind of coordination a campus should provide.
Ask for help rather than accepting an unusable route
If the published path does not meet your needs, contact the campus accessibility or disability-support office and the facilities or construction contact listed in the notice. Michigan State describes coordination with its Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities. Explain your destination, arrival time, travel mode and the specific barrier you cannot use. Ask for a confirmed route or entrance, not merely a general assurance that the building is open.
Make the request before the trip when possible. If a condition changes on site, use the contact information in the alert and remain in a safe public area while waiting for instructions.

Build time and a backup into the plan
Construction adds uncertainty even when the route is well marked. Leave earlier when the detour is long, the notice is provisional, you are unfamiliar with the area, or you must make a class, appointment, shift or event. The extra time may be needed to find a new entrance, wait for a shuttle or bus, locate a temporary parking area, or ask for directions.
Prepare one realistic backup
Choose a backup that you could actually use: a second entrance, another lot, a different bus stop, a walking route that avoids the project, or a remote participation option if your institution offers one. Know where the backup begins and how it connects to the destination. Listing several theoretical alternatives is less useful than knowing one dependable option.
Recheck close to departure
Open the alert again shortly before leaving and scan for a new update, changed date, relocated stop or additional closure. Check the first part of the route on site for temporary signs. A route that was open in the morning may be restricted later as work progresses, and a weather delay can move a planned closure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when the information is unclear
- Capture the exact problem. Note the project name, building, entrance, route segment, sign, barrier or stop that is unclear.
- Check the project page and central alert page. A detailed project notice may contain information that the campus-wide map does not.
- Contact the listed office. Facilities, transportation, project management or accessibility staff can confirm the current condition.
- State your constraints. Tell staff whether you are walking, cycling, driving, using transit or requiring a step-free route, and give your arrival time.
- Ask for a specific instruction. Request the open entrance, lot, stop or route to use and whether it will remain available for your arrival.
- Report a mismatch. If signs, maps and actual conditions disagree, send the location and a concise description so the notice can be corrected.
For an immediate hazard, do not investigate the work area yourself. Move away using the safest signed path and use the campus channel provided for urgent safety reports.
Examples of practical campus plans
A student walking to a class
The student checks the construction map for the class building, confirms that the usual east entrance is closed, and identifies the west entrance shown in the notice. The student follows the signed perimeter route, leaves enough time to find the new door, and checks the map again before leaving for the next class. If the west entrance requires stairs, the student contacts accessibility staff for a step-free alternative instead of attempting the detour.
A faculty member driving to an office
The faculty member checks whether the office building is open, which parking lot is available, and whether the normal approach road has been rerouted. The plan includes the lot’s pedestrian connection and a second lot in case the first fills or its access changes. The driver follows temporary traffic signs and does not use a construction service drive as a shortcut.

A visitor arriving by bus
The visitor verifies the stop name and direction in the alert, then traces the walk from the relocated stop to the building entrance. The visitor allows time for the new stop location and saves the facilities or transportation contact number. If the route is not clear on arrival, the visitor remains on the public side of the barrier and asks staff for directions.
How campuses can make construction easier to navigate
If you help plan campus operations, coordinate facilities, transportation, public safety, disability services, academic scheduling, housing and event staff before publishing a closure. The notice should identify the affected route, dates, buildings, entrances, parking, transit and bicycle impacts; state who is most affected; show a safe and accessible alternative; and provide a contact for problems.
Michigan State says it schedules major roadway impacts during summer or winter breaks when possible and coordinates around move-in and major athletic events when academic-year work cannot be avoided. It gives the example of building a temporary pedestrian bridge before vehicle-bridge work. These are planning practices, not promises that every college can follow, but they illustrate how timing and temporary infrastructure can reduce disruption.

Keep information consistent
Update the construction map, project page, transit information, building signs and event communications together. A campus-wide alert should link or point to the detailed route information. When field conditions change, revise the online notice and replace outdated signs rather than leaving travelers to reconcile conflicting instructions.
Provide a feedback loop
Invite reports about blocked paths, missing signs, inaccessible detours and confusing entrances. Review those reports with accessibility and transportation staff, then adjust the route or communication. A detour is successful only when people can find it, use it safely and reach the destination.
Quick checklist before leaving
- Open the current official construction map or alert page.
- Confirm the date, time and project phase.
- Trace the complete trip to the exact building entrance.
- Check walking, cycling, driving, parking, transit and elevator impacts that apply to you.
- Choose a signed, separated and accessible route.
- Allow extra time and identify one workable backup.
- Save the facilities, transportation or accessibility contact.
- Recheck the notice immediately before departure and follow on-site signs.
With those checks, construction becomes a route-planning problem rather than a last-minute surprise. Use your college’s current information, keep clear of active work, and ask for a different route whenever the published detour cannot safely or accessibly get you where you need to go.
