Plan the crossing before you leave: identify the exact bridge, date, time, direction and vehicle; check the responsible transportation agency’s live project and traveler-information notices; choose a signed or officially published detour that fits your vehicle; add flexible time for queues; and recheck conditions immediately before departure. At the work zone, posted signs, flaggers and traffic-control devices take precedence over a preplanned route or navigation app.

Start with the details that determine whether the crossing is possible

A bridge project cannot be planned safely from a generic map. Restrictions vary by crossing, work phase, direction, time of day and vehicle. Write down these details before looking for a route:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Bridge and crossing: Record the bridge name, road number, nearest town and the waterway or junction it crosses. If several bridges share a name, include the state or local jurisdiction.
  • Travel date and approximate time: A lane shift that is open in the morning may become a scheduled closure overnight, and a weekend closure may not apply on a weekday.
  • Direction: Note whether you are traveling northbound, southbound, eastbound, westbound or in another signed direction. Many projects stage work in only one direction at a time.
  • Vehicle: Record whether you are driving a passenger car, bus, recreational vehicle, trailer, commercial vehicle or an oversize or overweight load. Include approximate height, width, length and weight when those dimensions could affect a detour.
  • Trip obligations: Identify appointments, delivery windows, fuel or charging stops, and any people who cannot tolerate a long or uncertain delay.

Without those facts, no one can responsibly confirm a live closure, detour or arrival time. Use the agency responsible for that bridge rather than assuming a neighboring state’s information page applies.

Find the agency’s current project and traveler information

Look for two kinds of official information: a project page describing the construction phase and a traveler-information service reporting what is happening on the road now. State departments of transportation, county road departments, toll-road authorities and municipal transportation agencies may divide those responsibilities.

What to look for on the project page

  • Construction phases and the dates or time windows for full closures, alternating traffic, lane shifts and overnight work.
  • Detour maps or written turn-by-turn directions.
  • Restrictions by direction, vehicle class, height, width, weight or permit status.
  • Expected effects on ramps, intersections, sidewalks, bicycle routes, transit stops and nearby roads.
  • Project contacts or an alert-signup option for schedule changes.

What to look for in traveler information

A useful traveler-information service may combine active incidents, planned closures, construction reports, cameras, weather, travel times and emergency notices. The Federal Highway Administration’s Washington traffic-information directory illustrates these categories and links to that state’s resources; it is an example of how information may be organized, not a universal source for every bridge.

Check the page for the exact route and direction. A camera several miles away may show normal traffic while a queue is forming at the bridge approach, and a project announcement may cover a closure that has not yet begun. If the agency offers text, email or app alerts, subscribe for the travel period, but do not rely on an alert service instead of checking the current road status.

Check again shortly before you leave

Construction information changes. A planned closure can be postponed by weather, an emergency repair can create an unplanned restriction, and a crash can block an otherwise open detour. FHWA material describes bridge and roadway restriction data as frequently changing; one New York State process described in that material updated some restriction information nightly. That supports a close-to-departure check, but it does not mean every agency follows the same update schedule.

  1. Check the project page and live traveler-information service when you first plan the trip.
  2. Check again the day before departure for revised work windows, detour instructions or special-event conflicts.
  3. Check again shortly before setting out, using the agency’s latest notice, cameras, travel times and weather information.
  4. If the trip is long, identify a safe stopping point where you can review a new notice without handling a phone while driving.

Save or print the official detour description before departure if service may be unreliable. Treat an old screenshot, cached map or previous day’s social-media post as background only; the current signed control and agency notice govern.

Build a primary route and at least one compatible fallback

Do not choose an alternative solely because a map labels it “fastest.” A route is usable only when it is officially open for your travel window, reaches both ends of your trip and accepts your vehicle. If an agency publishes several options, compare them on the same criteria:

Decision factor Questions to answer Why it matters
Official availability Is the route open in your direction on the date and at the time you will arrive? A route that is open only outside your window is not a practical alternative.
Delay and variability What additional time does the agency or a location-specific live service show, and how likely is that time to change? Queues can fluctuate quickly, especially after a closure begins or a crash occurs.
Vehicle fit Do height, width, length, weight and permit rules allow your vehicle? A legal passenger-car route may be unusable for a tall, wide or heavy vehicle.
Access Can you reach the detour from your origin, and does it reconnect conveniently with your destination? A bridge bypass may add difficult turns, local-road restrictions or an additional crossing.
Corridor exposure Does the option depend on another bridge, tunnel or highway with its own project or incident? Several restrictions can compound delay instead of avoiding it.

Mark the primary and fallback routes in advance, including the point where you will switch. Choose a safe decision point before the queue, not a last-second turn at a barricade. If an official detour is signed, follow it rather than improvising through residential streets or restricted access roads.

Allow for queues without inventing a travel-time promise

A bridge closure can affect the approach roads, intersections and parallel corridors, not just the bridge deck. Agencies analyze expected queues and delay when coordinating major work, but a historical estimate cannot predict your trip. Use the current agency estimate or a live traffic service for that location and treat it as variable.

Plan a time window rather than a single arrival minute. Tell a meeting host or receiver that construction conditions may change, and keep essential medication, water and weather-appropriate clothing available if a long stop is plausible. Do not stop on a shoulder, ramp or active lane to wait out congestion unless officials direct you to a designated area.

Why nearby projects can multiply the delay

FHWA guidance describes cumulative corridor delay as a concern when multiple closures affect the same journey. For example, a bridge detour may feed into a highway project, a lane reduction near an interchange or another crossing with restricted capacity. Check the entire origin-to-destination corridor, not only the bridge project page.

An Oregon FHWA case involving bridge-deck replacement coordinated recurring closure times with freight stakeholders and analyzed expected queues. That historical example demonstrates the type of planning agencies may perform; it is not a forecast for any other bridge.

Verify restrictions for commercial, oversize and unusual vehicles

Navigation software generally assumes a standard vehicle unless you enter verified dimensions, and even then its data may not reflect a temporary construction restriction. Before departure, confirm the detour with the responsible agency, permitting office or carrier-routing specialist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Height: Check every bridge, tunnel, sign structure and temporary beam on the proposed route. Use the vehicle’s actual maximum height, including roof equipment or a loaded trailer.
  • Width: Confirm lane and shoulder widths, temporary barriers and any escort requirement.
  • Length: Check turning paths at detour intersections and restrictions on combination vehicles.
  • Weight: Verify posted bridge limits and any seasonal or emergency restrictions.
  • Permits: A permit for the normal route may not authorize the detour. Confirm that the permit, approved route and travel time remain valid.

FHWA’s Oregon coordination example discusses freight-route restrictions and tracking routes that can accommodate permitted loads. That is why a commercial driver should obtain route-specific confirmation instead of treating a passenger-car detour as automatically legal.

Prepare your navigation without using it while moving

Enter the confirmed route and fallback before starting. Download maps for areas with weak reception, save the agency’s detour instructions and set the device so it will not silently reroute you onto a restricted local road. If another person is traveling with you, assign them to monitor notices and give directions.

FMCSA warns drivers to avoid distractions, including cellphone and GPS use while driving. Pull into a legal, safe location before changing a destination, reading a notice or comparing routes. A mounted phone does not make hand-held interaction safe or lawful, and voice prompts do not replace posted work-zone instructions.

Drive through the work zone according to the signed control

Before entering the zone, reduce speed as required, turn off cruise control if conditions or local rules make that appropriate, and create extra space ahead. FMCSA’s guidance states: “Make sure to slow down when entering a work zone and keep an eye out for road workers.” It also advises researching the route before setting out and using available detours when possible.

  • Read signs early and merge where directed; do not race to the end of a closing lane.
  • Follow flaggers, police officers and temporary signals even if a navigation app displays a different path.
  • Keep a larger following gap so sudden braking does not become a rear-end collision.
  • Expect narrow lanes, shifted lines, uneven pavement, steel plates, construction equipment and workers entering or leaving the roadway.
  • Do not pass a stopped work vehicle, cross a barrier or drive around a barricade to save time.
  • Keep headlights and attention on the roadway as required by local law and conditions.
  • Never use a phone, enter a destination or read messages while the vehicle is moving.

Work zones are not merely inconvenient. FMCSA reports that nearly 900 people are killed in work-zone crashes on average each year, with more than one-third of those fatalities involving a commercial motor vehicle. The page carrying that statistic was last updated April 20, 2026, and the cited text does not define the underlying data period; it should not be read as a count for 2026 alone.

Know what to do when the plan changes at the bridge

If the bridge is unexpectedly closed

Stop at the last safe location before the closure and obtain the latest official instruction. Do not follow a crowd through an unmarked side road. If an agency has activated a signed emergency detour, follow that route and check whether your vehicle class is allowed.

If traffic stops inside the work zone

Stay in your lane, leave space, and watch for instructions from workers or emergency responders. Keep intersections, driveways and access points clear. Do not make a U-turn or reverse unless directed by authorized personnel.

If weather changes conditions

Recheck the agency and weather information from a safe location. Rain, ice, wind or flooding can change a temporary surface, reduce visibility or trigger a new restriction even when the construction schedule has not changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you miss the intended detour turn

Continue to a legal place where you can stop and recalculate. A late lane change or abrupt turn creates more risk than accepting a longer route to the next signed decision point.

Use historical projects to understand the scale of planning—not to predict your trip

Past FHWA cases show why bridge work can require detailed transportation management:

  • In a Texas I-35 case, traffic on the cited corridor segment ranged from 55,000 to 111,000 vehicles per day, and FHWA reported that approximately two-thirds was through traffic. Those figures describe that historical corridor and should not be generalized to another bridge.
  • The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge East Span seismic-safety plan documented an 81-hour full closure scheduled from 8 p.m. on August 31, 2007, to 5 a.m. on September 4, 2007. The plan included detours, transit changes and traveler information. It is an example of advance coordination, not current Bay Bridge guidance.
  • An Oregon bridge-deck replacement example coordinated recurring closure times with freight stakeholders and assessed queues and delay. It illustrates how agencies can manage predictable impacts without supplying a travel-time guarantee for today’s drivers.

Use these examples to recognize the questions an agency should answer—closure window, queue effect, freight compatibility and transit changes—then obtain the current answers for your own crossing.

Departure checklist

  1. Confirm the bridge, jurisdiction, date, approximate arrival time, direction and vehicle dimensions.
  2. Read the current project notice and traveler-information page for the exact crossing.
  3. Record closure windows, lane arrangements, detour instructions and any vehicle restrictions.
  4. Check the whole corridor for other closures, incidents, weather hazards and restricted crossings.
  5. Select a primary route and a compatible fallback, with a safe point for switching.
  6. Allow a flexible arrival window based on current local information, not a generic estimate.
  7. Load or print directions, download maps if needed and assign a passenger to monitor updates.
  8. Recheck conditions shortly before departure.
  9. At the site, obey every posted sign, temporary signal, flagger and law-enforcement instruction.

After the trip: report a problem safely

If signs conflict, a detour is blocked or a restriction appears missing, do not investigate from the travel lane. Stop only where legal and safe, then contact the agency through its published non-emergency channel. Provide the bridge, direction, nearest intersection, time and the vehicle restriction or obstruction you observed. For an immediate hazard or crash, use the appropriate emergency service rather than a construction-project contact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a navigation app tell me whether a bridge construction detour is legal for my vehicle?

Not reliably. Confirm height, width, length, weight and permit compatibility with the responsible transportation agency or permitting authority; temporary restrictions may not be reflected in map data.

How early should I check the bridge status?

Check when planning, again the day before, and again shortly before departure. Construction and incident information can change, and agencies do not all update on the same schedule.

What if the official project page and a road sign disagree?

Follow the current sign, flagger, temporary signal or law-enforcement direction at the site. Stop safely and seek clarification from the agency rather than making an abrupt maneuver.

Should I avoid the bridge entirely?

Use an officially available detour when it is suitable for your vehicle and trip. If the bridge remains open with controlled traffic, follow the signed work-zone route and allow for variable delay.
