Confirm whether the crossing is open, restricted by time, or fully closed; check that the alternate road suits your vehicle and load; then recheck conditions just before leaving. Temporary traffic controls, queues, work hours, and detours can change between construction phases, so a route that worked yesterday may not be safe or legal today.
What bridge construction can do to a normal trip
A bridge project may leave the crossing open with fewer lanes, close it completely, move traffic across a crossover, or stop traffic intermittently with a rolling roadblock. A signed detour may use roads that have different weight limits, height clearances, turning geometry, or hazardous-load rules. The restriction can also apply only during specified work hours or a particular phase of the project.

This is general guidance for drivers in the United States. No bridge, state, destination, or vehicle has been identified here, so there is no single detour, closure date, clearance, or travel-time estimate to provide. For a named project, use the responsible transportation agency or bridge owner’s current project page and traffic notices shortly before the trip.
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidance treats public information and advance detour information as work-zone management strategies. Its purpose is to give motorists time to choose a suitable route instead of making a sudden decision at the closure.

Find the authoritative project information first
Identify the bridge and its owner
Start with the road name, crossing name, nearby town, and route number. Then identify the state department of transportation, county, city, toll authority, or other bridge owner responsible for the work. Search that owner’s official project page and traffic-alert page, and check any official closure notice or construction bulletin.
Agency pages commonly explain the current construction phase, expected restrictions, work hours, emergency contact information, and the signed detour. A general map result or an old social-media post may not reflect a phase change, overnight closure, or temporary incident.
Determine the status for your actual travel time
Look for wording that distinguishes among:
- Full closure of the bridge or approach;
- Partial opening with a lane or shoulder closed;
- Time-specific closures, escorts, or rolling roadblocks;
- Weight, height, width, axle, or vehicle-class restrictions; and
- Short-term changes caused by weather, crashes, emergency repairs, or an active work operation.
Do not assume that a statement such as ‘open to traffic’ means every vehicle can use the crossing. It may describe passenger-car access while a separate notice applies to trucks, buses, oversize vehicles, or regulated loads.
Build the route before departure
- Record the destination and the bridge location. Include the side of the bridge from which you will approach, because a detour can differ by direction.
- Read the official closure and detour notice. Note the effective dates, daily hours, vehicle classes, and any instructions for local access.
- List feasible alternatives. Use the signed detour first, then identify other roads only if the agency permits them and they meet your vehicle and access needs.
- Check the route at the planned departure time. Look for current traffic, queues, incidents, weather, and any newly posted restrictions.
- Confirm that the route reaches the right destination access. A route that bypasses the bridge may still lose a driveway, interchange, bus stop, delivery entrance, or other connection.
- Choose before entering the work zone. Program or review the alternate route while stopped in a legal, safe place, not while approaching a taper or queue.
- Allow a time margin. Work-zone traffic can slow unexpectedly, and an incident on the detour road can make the original alternate unsuitable.
FHWA summarizes the reason for early notice this way: “Advance notice is required so that motorists have time to choose an alternate route.” Treat that as a planning principle, not as permission to improvise around a barricade.
Use signs and temporary traffic control as the controlling instructions
Once you are on the road, follow the official signs, flaggers, cones, barriers, lane markings, and other temporary traffic-control devices. They reflect the conditions at the site at that moment. Do not cross a barricade, drive through a closed lane, or follow a shoulder that has not been opened for traffic.
Make lane changes early and only where permitted. A last-second merge near a narrow bridge approach creates conflicts with vehicles behind you and may put you beside workers or equipment. If you miss a turn in the signed detour, continue to a legal place where you can stop and reroute; never reverse, turn around in a work area, or stop in a live lane.

A navigation application can help with ordinary traffic, but it may not know about a newly installed closure, a temporary height restriction, a police-directed movement, or a detour that is open only during certain hours. If an app conflicts with a sign, flagger, or current agency instruction, obey the applicable traffic control and verify the agency update from a safe location.

Compare alternate routes by safety and fit
When more than one route appears possible, compare each one against the same questions:
- Open at the required time: Is the road available for the entire trip, including the return, delivery window, or overnight period?
- Legal for the vehicle: Do posted weight, axle, height, width, length, and other restrictions permit the vehicle and its configuration?
- Suitable geometry: Can the vehicle negotiate turns, grades, narrow lanes, low structures, and intersections without crossing into opposing traffic?
- Current traffic exposure: How much queueing or stop-and-go travel is likely near the work zone and along the detour?
- Clear continuity: Are signs frequent and unambiguous from the bridge approach to the destination connection?
- Access preserved: Does the route serve the people, equipment, emergency access, or delivery point that motivated the trip?
- Resilience: Is there a lawful fallback if a crash, flooding, or another closure blocks the first alternate?
There is no universal best detour. A shorter passenger-car route may be unsuitable for a commercial vehicle, while a longer route with clearer signing and fewer restrictions may be safer and more reliable.
Check truck, bus, trailer, and regulated-load requirements
Weight and axle limits
Bridge and detour roads can have different gross-weight and axle limits. Check the posted limit and the rules for your actual axle spacing and load, not merely the vehicle’s empty weight. A detour that appears open on a consumer map can still be illegal for a heavy vehicle.
Height, width, and length clearance
Verify clearance for the highest point of the vehicle or load, including equipment that can raise, tilt, or shift. Measure the loaded width and account for mirrors, escorts, trailer swing, and turning radius. A route can meet a height limit on a straight section yet fail at a ramp, railroad bridge, or sharply angled turn.
Hazardous materials and special routing
Vehicles carrying hazardous materials may face routing rules that differ from ordinary trucks. Confirm the applicable federal, state, and local requirements for the material, placards, vehicle type, and destination. Do not substitute a passenger-car detour for a hazmat route without checking the governing authority.

Use authoritative restrictions for the actual jurisdiction
The cited federal material describes weight, clearance, geometry, and load-specific restrictions as traffic-control considerations; it does not create one nationwide detour rule. State and local requirements, permits, escort conditions, and signs control the trip. If a restriction is unclear, contact the responsible agency or permit authority before departure.
Understand the kinds of bridge controls you may encounter
FHWA bridge-planning material identifies several possible controls:
- Detour: Traffic leaves the normal route and follows another road.
- Lane closure: One or more lanes are closed while traffic uses the remaining space.
- Rolling roadblock: Traffic is held or paced temporarily so a work movement can occur.
- Crossover: Traffic is shifted across the median or onto the opposite side under temporary control.
These are planning options, not a list of measures used on every project. The project’s signs and current notices determine which control is active. Bridge project documents may specify closure windows, but those windows can change when construction sequencing, weather, or an incident changes.
Recheck just before leaving and during a changing trip
Perform a final check close to departure, even if you planned the trip days earlier. Confirm the bridge status, detour hours, current traffic, and any incident on the alternate road. Recheck again if you postpone the trip, change the departure time, add a stop, or return through the area later.
FHWA incident-management guidance warns that an alternate route’s suitability can change over time. Planners must consider incidents on the detour roads as well as on the construction roadway. For a driver, that means a detour is not a permanent guarantee: a crash, flooding, event, or emergency closure can invalidate it.
If traffic is stopped before the bridge, stay in the established lane and wait for instructions unless a lawful diversion is signed. If the route is blocked or appears unsafe, continue only to a legal, safe stopping place. Park before checking updates, calling a dispatcher, or selecting a new route.

Use extra care at night and around unfinished work
Bridge work zones can have narrow lanes, abrupt edges, temporary barriers, changing pavement, and limited escape space. Reduce speed to the posted temporary limit, increase following distance, and keep headlights and windshields clear so signs and workers are visible.

Drivers should obey the installed devices and never enter an unfinished deck, shoulder, or closed approach.
Know what the federal rules do—and do not—tell a driver
FHWA reports that updated Work Zone Safety and Mobility and Temporary Traffic Control Devices rules were published on November 1, 2024, and became effective on December 2, 2024. They address safety, mobility, and temporary traffic control on Federal-aid projects.
The rules do not give a motorist a universal detour, closure schedule, or right to interpret project documents at the roadside. Agencies develop project-specific transportation management plans. FHWA describes a plan as follows: “A TMP lays out a set of coordinated transportation management strategies and describes how they will be used to manage the work zone impacts of a road project.” Those strategies can include temporary traffic control, public information, and traffic operations, and they vary with the project and its expected impacts.
Troubleshoot common route-planning failures
The map says the bridge is open, but signs say closed
Follow the signs and other official traffic control. Stop only at a safe, legal location, then check the bridge owner’s current notice. Do not continue on the assumption that the map is more current.

The official detour appears too narrow or low
Do not test it with a truck, trailer, bus, or tall load. Verify the posted restriction and contact the responsible agency or permit authority for a compliant route.

You arrive after the detour’s listed hours
Treat the time restriction as active unless a current official notice says otherwise. Choose an alternative before entering the closure area.
A queue forms on the signed detour
Remain in the lawful lane and allow space for emergency access. Check for an official incident update from a safe location before abandoning the signed route; an unsanctioned shortcut may be narrower, restricted, or blocked.
You miss the detour turn
Continue to a safe place to turn or stop legally, then rejoin the signed route. Do not back up or make a sudden turn in the work zone.
The bridge changes between the outbound and return trips
Check the status again before returning. Construction phases and closure windows can change during the same day.
A practical departure checklist
- Bridge name, route number, direction of travel, and project owner identified.
- Current official notice checked for the planned departure and return times.
- Closure type understood: full, partial, time-specific, or incident-related.
- Signed detour reviewed before reaching the bridge.
- Vehicle height, width, length, weight, axle configuration, and turning needs checked against the route.
- Hazardous-material or special-permit requirements verified where applicable.
- Traffic, weather, queue, and incident conditions checked close to departure.
- Destination access and any delivery, passenger, or emergency needs confirmed.
- Extra time allowed for congestion and an unexpected change.
- Safe stopping locations identified for any needed rerouting.
How the plan changes by vehicle and trip
Passenger car visiting a local destination
Confirm the closure and signed detour, then check whether the alternate still reaches the correct neighborhood or driveway. Leave enough time for a queue and avoid changing lanes at the bridge taper.
Delivery truck or bus
Check dimensions, weight, turning geometry, loading access, and any time window. A route that is legal for a car may not accommodate the vehicle or its schedule.
Oversize or overweight movement
Use the route and permit conditions issued for the movement. Verify every clearance and restriction along the detour, including temporary controls that may not appear in a standard navigation database.

Hazardous-material trip
Confirm the load-specific routing rules with the applicable authority before departure. Keep the approved route available to the driver and dispatcher, and do not replace it with an informal shortcut around the bridge.
When to seek a project-specific answer
General guidance cannot establish whether a particular bridge is closed, how long a queue will be, or whether a specific truck can use a named road. Seek a project-specific answer when the trip involves a commercial vehicle, a regulated load, an oversize permit, an emergency response, a time-critical delivery, or any uncertainty about a posted restriction. Use the bridge owner, transportation agency, law-enforcement traffic notice, or permit authority responsible for that route, and verify the information immediately before travel.
