How to Plan a Safe Route Around a Closed Bridge

The safest way to route around a closed bridge is to combine the road-owning agency’s current closure notice and signed detour with a navigation route that you manually force away from the closed segment. Then check live conditions on the alternate, confirm that the route accepts your vehicle’s height and weight, and verify it again immediately before departure. A navigation app alone cannot establish that a detour is legal, open to your vehicle, or still the agency’s current plan.

There is no universal bridge-closure route: the correct alternative depends on the bridge, direction of travel, closure limits, date and time, vehicle dimensions, and the roads that remain open. Use the procedure below for a private car, delivery vehicle, construction traffic, or an oversized load.

Start with the closure notice, not the map

Before moving a route, identify exactly what is closed. A notice can apply to one travel direction, one bridge deck, a ramp, a short road segment, or the approaches on both sides. It can also distinguish a full closure from alternating traffic, a weight restriction, a height restriction, or a closure that operates only during work hours.

Record the five facts that control the detour

  • Bridge and road name: Include the route number, local name and nearest interchange or town.
  • Affected movement: Note whether the restriction affects northbound, southbound, eastbound, westbound, both directions, a ramp, or a particular turn.
  • Closed limits: Identify the exact segment and any approach roads that are also blocked.
  • Timing: Record the start and expected end, daily work hours, overnight status, weekends and any “until further notice” language.
  • Restriction type: Determine whether the issue is a total closure, a posted load limit, a low-clearance problem, or a temporary traffic pattern.

Check the transportation agency that owns the road or its traveler-information service. New York State’s 511NY guidance tells travelers to check conditions on the alternate route they are considering, not merely the original closure. The same principle applies elsewhere: an old project notice or a social-media post is not proof that a route is open today.

Find the agency-designated detour

Look for a current detour map, signed-route description or closure bulletin issued for that specific bridge. Follow the dates, direction and vehicle qualifications in that document. The New Jersey Department of Transportation’s Route 15 Southbound Temporary Bridge Installation material illustrates why this matters: a detour document can be tied to one road, one construction project and one period. It should not be reused as general guidance after the project changes.

WV 511’s public guidance also distinguishes closure and detour statuses and identifies planned-event information. Treat those labels as operational information: a route may be listed as affected, closed, detoured or planned for disruption without those terms meaning the same thing.

Build the alternate route in a navigation tool

Once you know the official detour, use your navigation tool to calculate it and to expose conflicts such as another closure, a toll, a restricted turn or a road unsuitable for your vehicle. Do not simply accept the app’s first “fastest” route; it may continue toward the bridge, use a blocked ramp or choose a local road that lacks the clearance or capacity you need.

Force the route away from the closed segment

  1. Enter the actual origin and destination, including the site entrance, job trailer or delivery gate rather than only the town name.
  2. Zoom in until the closed bridge and both approaches are visible.
  3. Select the route segment near the closure and drag it away from the bridge. 511NY’s published instructions specifically describe clicking the route near the closure and moving it with a waypoint.
  4. Place the waypoint on a road that is confirmed open and leads toward the agency’s detour. If the route still approaches the closure, add another waypoint beyond the entire closed segment.
  5. Recalculate and inspect the full line, including ramps, frontage roads and the final approach to the destination.
  6. Switch directions or return-trip settings if the closure affects only one direction. A route that works outbound may not work inbound.

Waypoints are a routing instruction, not a legal approval. After recalculation, compare every road on the proposed path with the agency notice and roadside signs. A line that appears to cross a river at another bridge may be valid for a car but unavailable to a heavy truck or may itself be under a temporary restriction.

Save a route that can be followed offline

Before leaving, write down the major roads, turns and the point where you rejoin the original route. Download or print the agency detour if that service offers it. Cellular coverage can fail near rural crossings, in work zones or during an incident, and a driver should not be manipulating a phone while moving.

Check live conditions on the alternate

A detour is only useful if it is open and moving when you need it. 511.org describes a live map showing traffic speeds, incidents, construction, events and road closures, and it offers phone access to driving times and traffic conditions. Regional 511 services do not all expose identical layers or phone features, so use the service for the jurisdiction through which the detour travels.

Review the alternate in this order

  1. Closure status: Confirm that every bridge, ramp and road segment on the alternate is open for your direction.
  2. Incidents: Look for crashes, disabled vehicles, emergency responses and police activity that could block a narrow detour.
  3. Construction: Check lane shifts, work windows, temporary signals and one-way traffic around the alternate.
  4. Traffic speeds and time: Compare current travel time with the agency detour and with at least one other open route.
  5. Events: Account for fairs, games, parades, planned work and other events that can change access at your departure time.

Recheck shortly before departure. If the trip is long, identify a safe stopping location where the route can be reviewed again without handling a phone in traffic.

Confirm the route fits your vehicle

Vehicle suitability is the most commonly missed part of a bridge detour. A car can pass a route that is illegal or physically impossible for a concrete truck, equipment trailer, bus, high-roof van or other commercial vehicle.

Check height, weight and road-class restrictions

  • Height: Compare the vehicle’s highest fixed point, including roof equipment and a loaded trailer, with every posted clearance on the alternate.
  • Weight: Check gross vehicle weight, axle weights and any bridge posting. A bridge may prohibit a load even when the roadway is otherwise open.
  • Width and length: Look for narrow lanes, sharp turns, weight-restricted local streets and turning radii at intersections.
  • Hazardous materials or permit conditions: Apply any route rules attached to the load, permit or vehicle class.
  • Seasonal and weather limits: Snow, flooding, wind and soft shoulders can make a nominally open road unsuitable for a heavy or tall vehicle.

PennDOT’s 511PA guidance describes map layers for low bridges, posted restrictions and closed state-route bridges. It directs over-height and overweight vehicles to PennDOT’s APRAS. That instruction is Pennsylvania-specific; in another state, use the equivalent route-clearance, permit or commercial-vehicle system operated by that jurisdiction.

Use the right route for construction traffic

For a construction project, confirm access for the exact vehicle and operation, not just the driver’s destination. A detour that works for a pickup may fail for a mixer truck because of a low underpass, a posted local bridge, a weight-limited temporary structure or a turn that cannot accommodate the trailer. Give dispatchers and drivers the same written route, restrictions and recheck time so that a last-minute navigation recalculation does not send one vehicle toward the closure.

Compare open alternatives using the factors that matter

When more than one route remains open, compare them against the trip’s actual constraints rather than choosing the shortest line. The agency detour is the baseline; another route is acceptable only after it passes the same closure, condition and vehicle checks.

Comparison factor What to verify Why it can change the decision
Current legal status Closure, detour, ramp and direction status from the responsible agency A route that was valid yesterday may be closed or changed today.
Vehicle fit Height, weight, width, length, axle and permit restrictions A shorter route can be unusable for a large or specialized vehicle.
Travel time Live speeds, queues, signals and work-zone delays Distance alone does not predict arrival time during an incident.
Distance and fuel Total added miles and stops Important for low-fuel vehicles, time-sensitive deliveries and repeated trips.
Tolls and access Electronic or cash tolls, restricted turns and local-access rules A route may be open but impractical for the vehicle, account or delivery.
Reliability Exposure to one-lane sections, event traffic, flood-prone roads or additional bridges Fewer single points of failure can be more valuable than a small time saving.

The official detour and a second current route can be compared only when both are confirmed open. The available agency guidance does not establish universal travel times, distances, tolls or a preferred alternative; those values change with the specific bridge and departure time.

Follow signs and use the route safely

Once on the road, follow temporary signs, cones, flaggers and police directions over a previously saved route. Work crews can change the path after a notice is published. If a sign conflicts with the navigation display, obey the sign and stop at a safe location to obtain an updated route.

511.org advises checking conditions before leaving, using its phone service for voice-accessible information, or pulling over before checking a smartphone. Do not type, drag a route or read a closure bulletin while driving. A passenger can monitor information; otherwise use a legal, safe stopping place.

What to carry for a work or delivery trip

  • The agency closure notice or detour map, with its issue date and applicable time window.
  • A written sequence of major roads and the point where the route rejoins the original corridor.
  • Vehicle dimensions, weights, axle information and permit details needed to verify restrictions.
  • A phone number or voice-access method for the relevant traveler-information service.
  • A fallback stopping point or turnaround location before the final approach to the closure.

What to do when the planned detour fails

The navigation route still points at the bridge

Move the waypoint farther away, beyond every approach road and ramp that could feed the closure. Recalculate, then inspect the line at street level. If the tool continues to choose the bridge, build the trip as two legs: route to a confirmed point on the far side using the agency detour, then route from that point to the destination.

The official detour is congested

Do not improvise onto neighborhood streets immediately. Check the regional 511 map for incidents, construction and speeds, then compare another route against the vehicle restrictions table. If the agency has posted a signed diversion, expect local roads to have limits that are not obvious in a consumer map.

The alternate has a low bridge or weight posting

Stop before the restriction and do not attempt to “make it through.” Recheck clearance and weight data through the responsible agency. In Pennsylvania, the 511PA guidance points over-height and overweight vehicles to APRAS; elsewhere, contact the jurisdiction’s equivalent commercial-vehicle or permit authority.

The closure timing is unclear

Seek a current agency notice rather than relying on an estimated reopening time in an old article or map. Some closures are intermittent, overnight, event-related or extended without a firm end date. Plan for the restriction to remain in force until the agency confirms otherwise.

Conditions change after departure

Pull over safely, use the regional 511 service or have a passenger check it, and rebuild the route from your current location. Keep the closed bridge excluded with waypoints and repeat the vehicle-suitability check before accepting a new path.

A repeatable pre-departure checklist

  1. Identify the bridge, road segment, direction and restriction type.
  2. Read the responsible agency’s current closure notice and locate its official detour.
  3. Enter the exact origin and destination in the navigation tool.
  4. Drag the route away from the closure and add enough waypoints to keep every approach excluded.
  5. Check the alternate for closures, incidents, construction, events and live speeds through the relevant 511 service.
  6. Verify height, weight, width, length, axle and permit requirements for the actual vehicle and load.
  7. Compare the official detour with any second route on legal status, vehicle fit, time, distance, tolls and reliability.
  8. Save or write the major turns and identify a safe place to stop.
  9. Check again immediately before departure and follow temporary signs and personnel on the road.

When no single route can be confirmed

If the agency has not published a detour, live conditions are unavailable, or your vehicle’s restrictions cannot be verified, delay the trip or obtain route guidance from the responsible road and commercial-vehicle authority. A map estimate is not enough evidence for a tall, heavy or permitted load. The goal is not merely to avoid a line on the screen; it is to reach the destination on roads that are currently open, legally suitable and safe for the vehicle.
