The safest way to get through a highway interchange under construction is to plan from the responsible transportation agency’s information, use its signed or published detour, and verify live conditions just before departure. Compare only routes that avoid the closure and can safely handle your vehicle, then leave enough time and a safe place to stop if conditions change.
Because an interchange, project schedule, travel direction and vehicle are not specified here, no single alternate route can be named. The method below works for most jurisdictions; local agency rules and temporary signs always control at the work site.

1. Start with the agency that controls the road
Construction information is most reliable when it comes from the transportation authority responsible for the interchange. A commercial navigation app may show a delay, but the road agency’s project notice normally has the details needed to understand what is actually closed and which detour is approved.
Find the project record
Search the state, provincial or regional transportation agency’s official project page or traveler-information service. Identify the interchange by route number, nearby city, direction of travel and, if available, project name or work-zone number. Confirm all of the following:

- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
- Which ramps, lanes, bridges or connector roads are closed or restricted.
- The direction and movement affected: for example, eastbound through traffic, a westbound exit, or a left-turn connector.
- Published start and end dates, including overnight or weekend work windows.
- Whether traffic is shifted onto temporary lanes, reduced to fewer lanes, or required to leave the highway.
- Any agency-published detour, alternate route or restrictions for large vehicles.
Project pages often distinguish planned work from current conditions. Read both. A closure scheduled for next week may not affect today’s trip, while an incident or emergency repair can alter the route before a planned notice is updated.
Use the project map and subscriptions
Some agencies provide a construction map showing current and future projects. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), for example, directs travelers to its project map and allows subscriptions to selected projects, topics, processes or areas by email or text. Those features are specific to that agency, but they illustrate the value of signing up for updates when a trip will recur over several days or weeks.
2. Check live conditions shortly before leaving
A planned detour can become slow or unusable because of a crash, weather, a second construction project or an event. Check the official traveler-information service close to departure, not only the night before.
What to look for
- Current speeds and congestion on the approach, interchange and proposed detour.
- Incidents, emergency closures and disabled vehicles.
- Active construction on nearby routes that could create a second bottleneck.
- Camera views, if the jurisdiction provides them.
- Warnings about restrictions, such as a ramp closure, lane shift or height limitation.
Feature sets vary. Alberta describes 511 Alberta as a free service available by phone, mobile device or computer, with highway, construction, incident and other travel-affecting information. The Bay Area 511 map describes layers for congestion, incidents and closures, construction, events and traffic-camera snapshots. Ontario 511 describes construction and closure information, a map and hands-free audio alerts in its app. These examples show what may be available; they do not mean every region offers the same map layers or alerts.
Check more than the interchange itself
Look several miles upstream and along every candidate detour. A route can avoid the closed ramp yet feed into another project at the next junction. INDOT specifically warns that multiple projects in an area can coincide. Record the time you checked and recheck if you are leaving during a long work window or a period of rapidly changing weather.
3. Understand why the official detour may be longer
When readers ask, “How do you decide what the detour route will be?”, the answer is usually about capacity and road design, not simply distance. INDOT states: “Detours or alternate routes required by construction projects must be directed to other interstate highways, U.S. routes, or state roads due to the traffic volume and size of vehicles that travel these roads.” That is INDOT’s policy for its projects, not a universal rule for every transportation authority.

A signed detour may add miles to keep a large volume of traffic on roads with appropriate pavement, intersections, shoulders, bridge ratings, turning geometry and emergency access. A county road or city street that looks shorter on a map may not be built for tractor-trailers, buses, recreational vehicles or a sudden surge of diverted cars. It may also have weight, height, width or seasonal restrictions.
Treat the agency’s published or signed detour as the default. Do not replace it with a local shortcut unless the responsible authority identifies that road as an acceptable alternative and your vehicle is permitted to use it.
4. Define your trip before comparing routes
Write down the information that changes the decision. This prevents a route suggestion for one direction or vehicle from being mistaken for a general answer.
- Origin and destination: Include the entrance ramp, exit ramp or crossroad you actually need, not just the city.
- Direction: Note the highway direction and the intended interchange movement.
- Departure window: A route that works at midday may fail during a shift change, school release or event.
- Vehicle: Record height, width, length, weight, trailer status and hazardous-material restrictions where relevant.
- Flexibility: Decide whether you can leave early, use a different interchange or postpone the trip if no safe route remains.
For a fleet, delivery or service call, put these details in the trip instructions so every driver is working from the same assumptions.
5. Build a short list of permitted alternatives
Start with the agency’s detour. If the notice names more than one permitted option, add those routes to your list. You may also consider staying on the highway to a later interchange, approaching from the opposite direction, or using a parallel state or provincial route if the agency confirms it is suitable.

Automatic navigation can propose residential streets, frontage roads or private access roads when it detects a closure. A line that appears shorter may have low capacity, restricted turns, a low bridge, an unmarked closure or no place for a long vehicle to recover from a missed turn. Use navigation to examine the options, not to override the transportation agency or temporary signs.

Check the alternate route itself
For each candidate, verify the entire path from the last safe decision point before the interchange to the point where you rejoin your planned trip. Look for another closure, a bridge restriction, a road-class change, a toll or a turn that your vehicle cannot make. If the agency’s map lists a detour, follow its stated sequence rather than entering only the final destination into a navigation app.
6. Compare routes with a consistent checklist
Use the same criteria for every permitted option. A nominally shortest route is not automatically the fastest or safest.
| Comparison factor | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Closure avoidance | Does the route avoid every closed ramp, lane, connector and blocked approach? |
| Current conditions | What do the official map, incidents list and cameras show now? |
| Expected travel time | How long is the route under current conditions, and how much uncertainty is there? |
| Road and vehicle suitability | Can the road safely and legally handle your height, weight, width, length and turning needs? |
| Other projects | Is construction, an event or a recurring bottleneck active along the alternate? |
| Decision flexibility | Where can you safely stop or change plans before committing to the interchange? |
Prefer a route with a predictable, well-marked path over one that is only marginally shorter but depends on several uncertain turns. For a heavy or oversized vehicle, road class and clearance take priority over a small time difference.

Identify a legal, safe place to stop before the interchange: a service area, rest area, designated parking area or other location where you can pull completely off the travel lanes. Do not plan to make a complex reroute while moving through a lane shift.
- Before leaving, record the primary detour and one backup that is permitted and suitable for your vehicle.
- Mark the last point at which you can safely commit to the detour without an abrupt lane change.
- Set a departure buffer for queueing, reduced speeds and an unexpected stop. The agency may not publish a reliable delay estimate.
- At the decision point, recheck official alerts and signs. If conditions have changed, stop in the safe location and select the backup rather than improvising in traffic.
For recurring trips, use the same decision point and review the project notice each day. Construction staging can move the correct turn even when the project name has not changed.
8. Follow temporary signs and work-zone control
Once you enter the approach, temporary signs, channelizing devices, flaggers and law-enforcement instructions take precedence over a saved route. Slow early enough to read signs, maintain extra following distance and stay in the lane indicated for your movement. A navigation app may continue to display the original ramp after the physical route has been shifted.

If you miss the intended ramp
Continue to the next safe, legal opportunity. Do not stop on a shoulder to reverse course, cross a gore area or make a sudden U-turn. Use the next interchange or signed turnaround, then rejoin the agency’s detour. If a flagger directs you differently from an app, follow the flagger and reassess only after you are clear of the work area.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Use phones and alerts without creating a second hazard
Check maps and project notices before driving. During the trip, use hands-free or voice information where the service supports it. The 511.org FAQ advises drivers to use voice information or pull over before checking a phone. Do not type, scroll or hold a phone while moving.
Enable route notifications when the local agency offers them, but treat an alert as information to verify, not permission to make an unsafe maneuver. If an alert arrives while you are in the work zone, continue to a safe stopping place before changing the plan.
10. Plan for different vehicle types
Passenger cars and motorcycles
Confirm the lane and ramp sequence, especially where a temporary crossover or narrow shoulder changes the normal approach. Motorcyclists should account for uneven pavement, metal plates, loose aggregate and abrupt lane shifts by reducing speed and increasing space.
Trucks, buses and recreational vehicles
Check height, weight, width, length and turning restrictions before leaving the main route. A detour that is legal for a car may be unsuitable for a high vehicle or one towing a trailer. Use the agency’s designated route where available; do not substitute local streets because they appear to save distance.

Emergency, hazardous-material and oversize loads
Follow the permits, route restrictions and carrier procedures that apply to the load. A general public detour may not satisfy a permit condition. Contact the responsible agency or dispatch before departure if the project notice does not address your vehicle class.
11. What to do when no detour is published
Do not infer that any open-looking road is approved. First determine whether the closure is planned, incident-related or controlled by another authority. Check the agency’s traveler-information service, project contact or local road authority for an official instruction. If no suitable route is confirmed, delay the trip, use a different interchange identified by the authority, or change the destination sequence.
For a business trip, document the closure and the agency’s status so dispatch, customers and other drivers understand why the schedule changed. Avoid sending multiple vehicles onto an unverified neighborhood shortcut; that can create congestion and may expose large vehicles to restrictions.
12. A practical departure checklist
- Road authority and project page identified.
- Route number, direction and affected ramp or connector confirmed.
- Work dates and current closure status checked.
- Official detour copied in order, including every turn.
- Live congestion, incidents, cameras and nearby projects reviewed.
- Vehicle dimensions, weight and restrictions matched to the route.
- Primary route, permitted backup and safe decision point recorded.
- Extra time allowed for queues and changing conditions.
- Phone set for hands-free or voice use; no manual checking while moving.
- Temporary signs and flagger instructions understood to override the planned route.
13. A repeatable example of the decision process
Suppose an eastbound interchange has a closed connector, and the project notice lists a signed state-route detour. Before leaving, identify the last upstream location where you can safely exit, confirm that the state route has no active closure, and check whether a second project affects the re-entry point. If the live map shows a crash on that detour, stop at the preselected safe location and use the agency’s second permitted option or postpone the trip. If the detour is clear, follow each temporary sign even if a navigation app proposes a shorter city-street route.
The same process applies when the closure is only overnight: verify the work window, check conditions immediately before departure, and avoid assuming that the daytime configuration remains in place after the shift begins.
Quick Recap
14. The key principles
- Use the responsible transportation agency’s project notice to establish what is closed and which detour is authorized.
- Use the live traveler-information service to see whether congestion, incidents or nearby work changes the choice.
- Judge alternatives by closure avoidance, current conditions, travel time, road class and vehicle suitability—not map distance alone.
- Expect conditions and staging to change; recheck before departure and use alerts where available.
- Make every phone check before driving, by voice, or after pulling over safely.
