A reliable detour starts with the agency that controls the road, not with a guessed side street. Before you leave, check the responsible state or regional 511 service, read its signed or mapped detour, compare that route with current traffic and camera data, and make a second plan using another crossing, transit, carpooling or telework. Treat your normal commute as the minimum possible time, then add a deliberate buffer for queues and changing conditions.
Use this sequence: official closure information, published detour, live validation, time-and-risk comparison, backup plan, and a final check immediately before departure. That order reduces the chance of arriving at a closed approach, joining an overloaded local street, or discovering too late that a second incident has blocked your alternate.

1. Establish exactly what is closed
Start with the official 511 service
Use the 511 service operated for the state or region in which the closure occurs. 511.org says its map displays real-time speeds, incidents, construction, events, road closures and transit information, and advises checking conditions before departure. Go511 provides route speeds, travel times, closures, incidents, cameras and trip planning based on current traffic and transit schedules. WSDOT lists real-time alerts, live cameras, travel times, and bridge and road restrictions for route planning.

Read the closure notice for its geographic limits and timing. A bridge project may close the bridge itself, an approach ramp, a nearby intersection, or an entire corridor. Note whether the restriction is continuous, overnight, limited to certain days, or subject to reopening windows. Do not infer an opening time from an old post or a navigation app; use the current agency notice.

Read the published detour before opening a navigation app
Agencies design signed detours around structural, emergency-response and traffic-management constraints that a generic route planner may not understand. PennDOT’s bridge toolkit tells travelers to review detour maps, allow extra travel time and consider rescheduling non-essential in-person meetings during the closure period. Follow the signed or mapped route first, then use live data to check whether it is currently moving.
Record restrictions that can invalidate an alternate
Check notices for vehicle, weight, height, width, hazardous-material, pedestrian, bicycle and transit restrictions. A route that works for a passenger car may not work for a delivery vehicle, accessible van, trailer or bus. WSDOT’s restriction and alert information is an example of the type of agency data to verify. If the notice does not state a restriction, do not assume that the road is suitable for every vehicle or travel mode.
2. Build and validate the detour
Use current traffic data, not a historical commute
Enter your actual origin, destination and departure window in a current route planner after reviewing the agency map. Compare the planner’s result with the official detour. Go511 reports that its traffic information is updated every minute and that its route tools match trips to current traffic data and transit schedules. That kind of recency matters when queues form quickly at a closed crossing.
Check the alternate crossing or corridor for incidents, construction, cameras and travel times. 511NY explains that users can move waypoints away from a closure to create a route around it. A practical method is to place a waypoint on the approach to the published detour, another beyond the replacement crossing, and a final waypoint at your destination. This prevents the planner from routing you back through the closed bridge.
Do not promote an untested side street to your primary plan
Familiar neighborhood streets often look attractive on a map but may have school traffic, weight limits, narrow lanes, signal queues or no safe place to turn around. Use them only when the responsible agency or live conditions support the choice. If a camera shows a clear approach but the next segment has a reported incident, treat the route as compromised rather than assuming the problem will clear before you arrive.

Check the route in both directions
Morning and evening traffic can use different approaches to the same crossing. Validate the route for the direction and time you will actually travel, and check the return trip separately. A detour that is acceptable inbound may be unreliable outbound because of a work-zone shift, event, school release or a different signal pattern.
3. Calculate a realistic arrival window
Use the agency estimate as the floor
For planning, write down four values:
- Normal door-to-door time: your usual travel time, including walking to the vehicle, parking and the final walk.
- Current detour time: the live estimate for the official or validated alternate route.
- Access time: time to reach the detour’s first decision point, including any queue before the closure.
- Personal buffer: time you choose because lateness has a cost, such as a shift start, appointment or school pickup.
Your planned departure interval is the current detour time plus access time and the personal buffer. Do not subtract your normal commute from the detour estimate; the normal trip is a baseline, not a guaranteed saving. A full closure can create queues before the detour and congestion after the replacement crossing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Match the buffer to the consequence of being late
There is no universally correct number of extra minutes. Use a larger buffer when the appointment cannot be moved, the route has a single replacement crossing, weather is poor, you are carrying equipment, or another delay would leave no later option. Use a smaller buffer only when you have a flexible arrival window and a credible backup route. Recalculate when the live estimate changes rather than keeping yesterday’s buffer.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose your usual door-to-door trip is 40 minutes, the current detour estimate is 65 minutes, reaching the detour queue takes 10 minutes, and you select a 15-minute personal buffer. Your planned travel allowance is 90 minutes. The arithmetic is illustrative; replace each value with the current estimate for your route and the buffer appropriate to your obligation.
4. Compare travel plans by risk, not just minutes
Put the official detour and every credible alternative in one table. Compare the complete journey, including transfers, parking and walking.

| Plan | Door-to-door time | Variability and queue risk | Transfers or uncertain links | Cost factors | Accessibility and weather | Ability to change mid-trip |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Published road detour | Use the current agency or planner estimate | May include queues at both ends of the closure | Usually no transfer, but depends on the vehicle and signed route | Fuel, tolls and parking may change | Check restrictions, walking distance and weather exposure | Often easy to reroute at an upstream decision point |
| Another bridge or crossing | Measure the full approach and exit, not bridge time alone | Can become overloaded when many drivers choose it | Usually none by car; verify the crossing is open to your vehicle | Possible extra fuel or toll | Check grades, sidewalks, bike facilities and weather exposure | Useful only if a second crossing remains available |
| Transit itinerary | Include walking, waiting and transfer time | Depends on service alerts and missed connections | Count every transfer and the last-mile connection | Fare, parking or a connecting ride | Check accessible stations, elevator status and sheltered waiting | Can be changed if another line or departure is running |
| Carpool or vanpool | Include pickup detours and passenger loading | Shared departure is exposed to one vehicle’s delay | Fewer drivers, but more coordination points | Shared fuel, toll or parking costs | Confirm vehicle capacity and accessible boarding needs | Less flexible after passengers are collected |
| Telework or rescheduling | No closure travel for the affected period | Removes road-queue risk | No travel transfers | Check employer policy and any required equipment | Usually avoids weather and roadside exposure | Highly adaptable when approved in advance |
PennDOT recommends carpooling or public transit to reduce traffic and commuter stress. 511 systems also expose transit and shared-ride resources, although eligibility, schedules and availability depend on the local program. Treat telework or a rescheduled meeting as a transportation decision when the closure makes an in-person trip non-essential, not as an afterthought.

Write the decision points down
A backup is useful only if you can switch before entering the queue. Record the location at which you will choose between the published detour and another crossing, the latest acceptable arrival time, and the condition that triggers a switch. For example, you might stay on the official route unless its live estimate exceeds your arrival limit or an incident blocks its first approach. Choose the rule before driving so that stress does not make the decision for you.
Give each plan its own practical details
- Save the address or stop name for the destination and the replacement crossing.
- Identify where you can safely pull over before changing the route.
- Check fuel or battery range for the longer option.
- Confirm toll payment, parking, fare payment and vehicle restrictions.
- For transit, save a second departure and an alternate line or stop.
- For carpooling, confirm pickup times, meeting points and who can drive if the first driver is delayed.
- For telework or rescheduling, notify the relevant person before the commute window rather than after missing the appointment.
6. Use a day-before and departure checklist
Day before the closure period
- Open the official 511 map and read the closure notice and detour map.
- Check the planned crossing, replacement crossing and approaches for construction, incidents, cameras and travel times.
- Measure door-to-door time for the primary and backup plans, including parking, walking and transfers.
- Choose a buffer based on the cost of lateness and write down the departure time.
- Confirm transit alerts, carpool arrangements, employer flexibility and any accessibility requirements.
- Save the agency alert page or enable available notifications.
Immediately before leaving
- Reopen the official source and verify that the closure schedule and detour have not changed.
- Check the current approach queue, replacement crossing and destination-side corridor.
- Look for a new incident, lane restriction, event or weather issue that changes the comparison.
- Tell a passenger or colleague which plan you selected and what would trigger a switch.
- Set navigation while parked. Once moving, use voice guidance or stop in a safe location before checking a screen.
511.org advises checking traffic before departure, calling 511 for voice-activated travel information, or pulling over to check a smartphone for updates. A hands-free phone mount can help with setup and alerts, but it does not replace official signs, agency information or local hands-free laws.
7. Avoid getting trapped near the closure
Make the last reversible choice upstream
Stay on roads with a clear escape option until you have confirmed the chosen crossing is open and moving. Avoid entering the final approach merely because the map shows a shorter distance. Once a queue becomes continuous, turning around may be difficult or unsafe. Select a safe parking lot, service area or other legal stopping location before the closure area where you can review conditions.
Do not block intersections or follow unofficial shortcuts
Keep intersections clear even when traffic is slow; gridlock can prevent emergency access and make the detour less reliable for everyone. Do not drive around barricades, enter a closed shoulder, or follow a vehicle onto a restricted road. If signs and an app disagree, obey the posted agency control and use the next safe decision point to reassess.

Expect the route to change after an incident
A crash on the detour can change the best plan within minutes. Recheck the official feed, cameras and travel-time display when stopped safely. If the alternate crossing is also compromised, use the second plan rather than improvising through residential streets. Notify anyone waiting for you as soon as the new estimate exceeds your agreed arrival window.
8. Account for construction-specific conditions
Lane shifts and work-zone timing
Construction may alter lanes, ramps and signal patterns without changing the bridge’s closure notice. Check the agency’s construction listing and camera views for the actual approach you will use. A route can be technically open yet unsuitable at a particular hour because a lane shift or work operation creates a long merge.
Events and unusual demand
511 maps include events as well as incidents and construction. A concert, sports event, school schedule or holiday can add demand to the same crossing used by the detour. Include those conditions in your comparison and avoid assuming that a route that worked on an ordinary weekday will perform the same way during an event.
Commercial, oversized and specialized vehicles
Drivers of trucks, trailers, buses, accessible vans and vehicles carrying regulated materials should verify every restriction with the road agency. A passenger-car route planner does not establish legal clearance, weight capacity or turning suitability. Keep the official restriction notice with the trip documentation and contact the responsible agency when the published map is unclear.
9. Make transit, carpooling and telework dependable
Transit
Use the 511 trip-planning function or the transit agency’s current alert feed. Check the complete chain: walk to the stop, waiting time, transfer connection, crossing used by the vehicle, and the walk from the final stop. Save a later departure and an alternate line when possible. Verify elevator or accessible-platform status if a mobility device, stroller or other accommodation is required.

Carpool and vanpool
Agree on one pickup point away from the closure queue and set a latest departure time. Share the official detour and the switch rule with every rider. A shared vehicle reduces the number of cars approaching the closure, but one late pickup can delay everyone; build a communication method and a substitute driver before the first closure day.
Telework or rescheduling
Ask an employer or meeting organizer whether a non-essential in-person commitment can move, shorten, or become remote during the closure. PennDOT’s bridge guidance specifically suggests rescheduling non-essential in-person meetings during a closure period. Confirm equipment, access and the new time rather than treating an unapproved absence as a transportation plan.
10. Manage weather, accessibility and personal safety
Rain, snow, ice, wind, heat and darkness can increase walking time, braking distance, transfer risk and the consequences of a missed connection. Add those effects to the buffer and favor routes with sheltered waiting, reliable lighting and safe pedestrian crossings. Check whether a bridge or detour has restrictions for bicycles, pedestrians or mobility devices; an automobile route is not automatically a usable walking or cycling route.
Keep emergency supplies appropriate to the season, but do not stop in a live lane to retrieve them. If you become ill, run out of fuel or cannot safely continue, leave the traffic stream at the nearest legal location and contact roadside or emergency services. Never use a phone while driving to compare routes.
11. Use official examples as operating models
PennDOT’s 2026 Commercial Street Bridge closure materials describe a full I-376 closure, direct travelers to review detour maps and allow extra travel time, and point them to 511PA for real-time updates. Its July 8, 2026 release says the 511PA map includes incidents, construction, traffic cameras, speeds, message boards and detour times. Those details illustrate the information to seek for any agency-managed closure: the closure boundary, signed detour, live conditions, camera evidence and current travel-time estimate.
511NY provides bridge and tunnel travel times, construction and closure displays, and multimodal trip planning. The specific interface differs by region, but the planning logic is the same: anchor the route in the responsible agency’s information, validate it against live conditions, and retain a second way to travel.
12. A compact decision framework
- Is the closure active during your trip? If no, still check current construction and restrictions. If yes, continue.
- Is there an official detour? Use it as the starting route. If none is published, identify crossings shown as open by the agency and verify restrictions.
- Does live data support it? Compare speeds, incidents, cameras and travel time. If not, test another crossing or mode.
- Can you meet the arrival requirement with a buffer? If no, switch to the backup, transit, carpool or telework plan.
- Can you change safely if conditions worsen? Set an upstream decision point and a legal place to stop before entering the closure queue.
This framework turns a closure from a single-route gamble into a managed choice. Keep the agency feed open until departure, follow traffic control in the field, and communicate any change before the delay becomes an absence.
