Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCheck an official transportation agency or 511 service immediately before you travel, open the specific construction or closure alert, and prepare both a primary detour and a safe fallback. A colored line on a map is only a warning; the alert details, affected direction and lanes, timing, current traffic, vehicle limitations and any official detour text determine whether the route is usable. Conditions can change after you check, so treat the plan as provisional and never handle a phone while driving.
Why a construction detour needs more than a map app
Construction information is distributed through road authorities, regional traffic services and, sometimes, private navigation applications. Those services may update at different times. An official alert is the best starting point because it identifies the agency’s event, the road and direction affected, the planned dates, and restrictions that a general route planner may not explain.

The most useful public data is event-specific. A construction notice can show a full closure, a lane reduction, alternating traffic, a ramp closure or work that occurs only during certain hours. Each condition changes the practical route. A route that looks open at noon may be unsuitable during an overnight closure, a weekend event or a weather-related change.

1. Define the trip before searching for a detour
Write down the information that determines whether an alternative is actually workable:
- Starting point, destination and any intermediate stops.
- Approximate departure time and the time window in which you must arrive.
- Vehicle dimensions and capabilities, including height, weight, trailer length, low clearance or unpaved-road limitations.
- Access needs, such as a wheelchair-accessible entrance, a delivery appointment, a charging stop or a fuel requirement.
- Roads you must use and roads you cannot use.
- Whether you need a route suitable for a large vehicle, a novice driver, a night trip or severe weather.
These constraints prevent a nominally shorter route from becoming a dead end. Do not choose a detour until you know which restrictions matter to this trip.
2. Start with the road authority or regional 511 service
Search the official source for the roads on your trip and the approximate travel period. In the Bay Area, 511.org’s map provides traffic speeds, incidents, construction, events, road closures and current Caltrans message signs. A state DOT map or a county or city transportation agency may provide the equivalent information elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePrefer an agency’s map, alert feed or phone service over an unverified social-media post. The Bay Area’s 511 service also offers telephone traffic information and shortcut menus for driving times, construction announcements and traffic conditions. A phone service can be useful when a driver cannot safely view a screen, but set it up before moving.
3. Turn on every layer that can change the route
Inspect the map with construction, closures, incidents, events and traffic-speed layers enabled. A crash, parade, sports event, flooding or a second work zone can make the official construction detour impractical. Current speed colors show conditions, but they do not explain why a road is slow or whether access is restricted.
Open each relevant icon or alert. The 511 FAQ instructs users to click construction and closure icons for details. Read the notice rather than inferring a closure from a symbol or a red line.

4. Read the alert’s complete conditions
Record the details that affect your departure:
- Location: identify the exact segment, interchange, ramp, bridge or intersection.
- Direction: confirm whether the notice applies to your travel direction, the opposite carriageway or both.
- Dates and times: distinguish continuous work from nightly, weekend or intermittent closures. Check the time zone when planning across a border.
- Lanes and roads: note full closures, lane shifts, shoulder use, ramp restrictions, alternating traffic and local-access exceptions.
- Vehicle or access limits: look for height, weight, width, turning or pedestrian restrictions.
- Detour wording: copy any named streets, signed route, crossing or instruction exactly so you can recognize it on the road.
Do not assume that the absence of detour wording means no detour exists. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s traffic-event and Work Zone Data Exchange specification defines a Detour field as an optional description of a route that avoids the event. Because it is optional, an alert may list affected roads without supplying a complete alternative.
5. Check the wider project, not just one alert
Construction events can be related to other notices in the same project. Follow linked notices and inspect nearby closures, ramps and intersections. A bridge approach may be open while its connecting ramp is closed; a project may move from one direction to the other overnight.
The same data specification models affected roads and related events. Use those relationships to build a route-wide picture, but do not treat a related event as proof that every nearby road is closed. Open each notice and verify its own time, direction and restriction.
6. Evaluate the posted detour and alternatives
When an authority posts a detour, compare it with at least one independently planned alternative. The official route may be the only signed path, but it can still have a queue, a low-clearance bridge or a second closure.
| Decision factor | Questions to answer before leaving | Evidence to use |
|---|---|---|
| Closure avoidance | Does the route stay clear of the closed segment, ramps and access roads? | Official closure and construction alerts |
| Current traffic | Are delays already building on the detour, and are they moving or stopped? | Live speed and incident layers |
| Timing | Will the route remain open for the entire travel window? | Alert dates, hours and message signs |
| Road complexity | Does it require unfamiliar turns, difficult merges, ferries or narrow streets? | Route directions and local road information |
| Vehicle fit | Can your vehicle legally and physically use every segment? | Clearance, weight, width and restriction notices |
| Trip requirements | Are fuel, charging, accessibility, delivery or passenger needs met? | Your trip plan and facility information |
| Fallback potential | Where can you safely stop if conditions deteriorate? | Public parking, service areas and staffed locations along the route |
No route is automatically best. A longer route with predictable roads may be safer and more reliable than a short route through a dense neighborhood. A route that works for a passenger car may be impossible for a box truck or trailer.
7. Build a fallback plan before you depart
Choose a second route that avoids the same closure and identify a lawful, safe place to pause and reassess. A fallback should not depend on making a complex turn while traffic is moving.

- Mark the point at which the primary route becomes unusable, such as the last interchange before the work zone.
- Identify a safe stopping location before that point: a rest area, public parking facility, service station or other place where you can legally pull off.
- Save the fallback route and the names of its major roads in your navigation system or written notes.
- Decide what would trigger a change: a newly reported closure, a queue that blocks access, a missed time window or a restriction that does not fit your vehicle.
- Tell passengers or a dispatcher which route is primary and where you will stop if it fails.
Do not improvise a shortcut through private property, a closed road or a shoulder. If the fallback also becomes questionable, stop in a safe location and obtain an updated official notice.
8. Recheck close to departure
Check the official source again shortly before leaving, even if you planned the trip the night before. The 511 terms of use explain that information is provided for general planning and can differ because of weather, construction, closures or other events. A notice can be extended, cancelled, moved to another lane or joined by an incident.
Compare the latest alert with your saved primary and fallback routes. If the closure time has changed, update the route rather than relying on yesterday’s screenshot. If conditions are uncertain, delay departure when possible or allow enough time to stop safely and reassess.
9. Use the information safely once the vehicle moves
Set navigation, read the alert and write down essential road names before driving. The 511 safety guidance says to call 511 or check 511.org for current conditions and driving times before being on the road. Its FAQ advises: “Please use 511.org safely. If you need to check traffic conditions while driving, call 511 and use voice commands or pull over to check your phone.” That advice is directed at the Bay Area service; phone-use laws elsewhere may differ.
- Never hold or manipulate a phone while driving.
- If you need an update, use a properly configured hands-free system, voice commands or a passenger.
- If a task requires looking at the screen, pull completely off the roadway in a legal, safe place first.
- Follow temporary signs, flaggers and police directions even when they differ from an older route instruction.
What Bay Area 511 coverage does—and does not—promise
The 511 SF Bay Work Zone Data Exchange feed reports planned and active road closures and detours throughout the Bay Area. Its stated design covers local streets, freeways and state highways in participating jurisdictions. “Participating” is a meaningful limitation: the service does not guarantee that every road, private facility or jurisdiction is represented.
The regional open-data portal supplies traffic, transit and toll information and identifies technology partners that consume public data. That does not mean every navigation or transit application displays every work-zone event, or that an application has the same update timing as the official feed. Verify a critical closure in the agency’s own alert.

Outside the Bay Area, terminology, map layers, phone menus and data coverage vary. A state or regional service may separate planned construction from emergency closures, publish only major highways or use a different alert system. Find the agency responsible for the road you will actually use.
Common planning failures and their fixes
Relying on the colored map line
Problem: A color indicates speed or congestion but not the legal status of a ramp, the direction of work or the hours of a closure.
Fix: Open the alert and read its location, direction, schedule and restrictions.
Assuming the alert contains a complete detour
Problem: Detour text is optional in the regional event data, so the notice may name affected roads without giving turn-by-turn instructions.
Fix: Trace an alternative yourself using the closure endpoints, then check every connecting alert.
Checking only the construction notice
Problem: An incident or event on the proposed detour can create a second bottleneck.
Fix: Review incidents, events, traffic speeds and nearby closures as one route-wide picture.
Using a route that does not fit the vehicle
Problem: A navigation app may select a road with a low bridge, weight limit, narrow turn or unsuitable surface.
Fix: Verify physical and legal restrictions before accepting the route.

Trying to research while moving
Problem: Looking at a phone diverts attention and may violate local law.
Fix: Configure the route before departure, use a passenger or hands-free voice service, or pull over.
A practical departure worksheet
Complete these fields before starting the engine:
- Official source checked: agency or 511 service and the time checked.
- Primary route: roads, closure avoided and expected open hours.
- Fallback route: roads and the point where you will switch.
- Alerts reviewed: construction, closures, incidents, events and traffic.
- Vehicle check: height, weight, width, trailer and access requirements.
- Safe stop: location for a phone or map check.
- Update method: passenger, hands-free voice service or planned pull-over.
Keep the worksheet with the trip details, but discard it when the work zone is no longer relevant; a saved plan is not a current traffic report.
Illustrative example: turning one closure into a resilient plan
Suppose an official alert reports a directional freeway closure during your planned evening trip. First, you confirm that your direction and departure window overlap the closure. Next, you inspect the ramps at both ends and notice a separate incident on the nearest parallel road. The posted detour avoids the freeway but uses a low-clearance underpass, which does not fit your vehicle.
Recommended Free Tools
You then select a second route that avoids both the closure and the incident, verify its hours and restrictions, and choose a public parking area before the decision point. Near departure, the agency extends the closure by one hour. Because the fallback is already checked, you can switch before reaching the queue instead of searching on the shoulder. This example illustrates the method; it is not a prediction of any particular road’s conditions.
When the official information is incomplete
An agency may publish the affected road but no detour, or show a planned closure without current travel-time information. Treat the missing field as unknown, not as permission to proceed. Check the road authority’s project page, message signs and telephone service if available. If you still cannot establish a legal route that fits your vehicle and timing, postpone the trip or stop well before the work zone for an updated decision.
Coverage gaps are especially possible on local, private or newly affected roads. Report an apparent discrepancy to the responsible agency, but do not wait for a correction while stopped in a hazardous location.
Bottom line
A dependable construction-detour plan combines an official alert, a route-wide check of traffic and related events, a vehicle-appropriate primary route, and a fallback with a safe stopping point. Recheck immediately before departure, obey on-site controls and obtain updates only through a passenger, hands-free voice service or a complete pull-over.
