How to Notify Customers About a Restaurant Move and Update Online Listings

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The safest way to move a restaurant is to treat the relocation as one coordinated customer-information change: confirm the new address and opening date, publish one clear notice, update the claimed Google Business Profile without creating a duplicate, decide whether Yelp needs a new page or an update, then audit every website, menu, reservation, delivery and social touchpoint. Keep a notice at the former location during the transition and open each important listing as a customer would after the edits are live.

The sequence below separates platform policy from practical timing advice so customers can find the right address, hours, phone number, menu and directions throughout the move.

Settle the move facts before telling anyone

Do not begin with a social post and fill in the details later. A wrong date or incomplete address will be copied into maps, menus, reservation systems and customer messages. Create one internal fact sheet and use it as the source for every public update.

Build a single relocation fact sheet

Detail What to confirm Why customers need it
Complete address Street number, street name, suite or unit, city, region and postal code Customers and map services need the full real-world location.
Map position The pin lands on the entrance or the correct building access point A correct written address can still send drivers to the wrong side of a property.
Effective date The first date guests should use the new location It gives customers a clear answer to “When should I go there?”
Temporary interruption Last service at the old site, closure dates, soft opening or reopening date Guests can avoid arriving while the restaurant is closed.
Customer-facing hours Dine-in hours by day, plus separate takeout, delivery or drive-through hours where applicable Hours must describe the service a guest is actually trying to use.
Contact details Phone number, website and any new email or text contact route Customers often call before travelling during a move.
Ordering and reservations Current reservation URL, online-order URL, delivery instructions and pickup entrance Old links can send orders or bookings to a closed location.
Access information Parking, building entrance, accessibility route, landmarks or delivery loading instructions These details reduce confusion when the new site is unfamiliar.

Choose a date you can state confidently

Only publish a firm opening or reopening date when the restaurant can stand behind it. If inspections, construction or equipment delivery could change the date, say that service at the new site begins “from” a stated date only after it is confirmed. If a short closure is unavoidable, state the final service date at the old location and the planned first service date at the new one in the same notice.

There is no universal platform rule that dictates how many days in advance to announce a move. As practical guidance, publish early enough for regulars to change their travel plans, keep the old-address warning visible during the transition, and update the listings again when the new site is actually serving guests.

Decide what stays the same

List any changes that affect the customer experience: seating capacity, parking, entrance, accessibility, dine-in availability, delivery zone, menu, service hours, reservation policy or phone number. Do not imply that everything is unchanged if the move materially alters how a guest visits or orders.

Write one announcement customers can act on

The announcement should answer five questions immediately: Is the restaurant moving? Where is the new location? On what date should customers use it? Will service pause? How can customers get directions or contact the restaurant?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a compact, repeatable structure

  1. Lead with the move: Say that the restaurant is relocating, rather than burying the news in a general update.
  2. Give the full new address: Include suite or unit information and the city, region and postal code.
  3. State the customer date: Identify the last day at the old site and the first day at the new site when both are known.
  4. Explain any interruption: Give closure dates or say that service continues without interruption only when that is true.
  5. Provide an action: Link or direct customers to directions, reservations, ordering and the current phone number.
  6. Describe access changes: Add parking, entrance, accessibility or pickup instructions that differ from the old site.

Adapt this announcement template

Keep the wording below as a starting point, replacing the code-formatted fields with confirmed information before publishing:

{{restaurant_name}} is moving to {{new_full_address}}.

Our last service at {{old_address_or_old_site}} is {{last_service_date}}. Please visit us at the new location from {{first_service_date}}. {{temporary_closure_sentence}}

Our customer-facing hours will be {{hours_summary}}. See directions at {{website_directions_page}} or call {{phone_number}}. Reservations and online orders are available at {{reservation_or_ordering_page}}. Parking, pickup and entrance details: {{access_instructions}}.

Remove any field that does not apply, but do not remove the full address, effective date or service interruption if customers need that information to plan a visit.

Publish in the channels customers already use

Place the canonical announcement on the restaurant website first, ideally on the home page and a permanent location page. Reuse the same core facts on active social profiles and in customer email or text messages where appropriate. The channel order is practical advice, not a requirement imposed by Google or Yelp. Keep the notice available after opening so a customer who saw an older post can still find the current address.

Use a prominent banner or alert on the old location page if the website keeps historical pages. Do not leave two current-looking location pages with different addresses. If a page must remain for history or search traffic, label it clearly as the former location and direct visitors to the new location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Put a temporary notice at the former site

A weatherproof window sign can redirect guests who follow an old address. Include the new address, the effective date, a phone number or short web address, and a direction arrow only if it is accurate. This is a practical customer-service measure, not a separate platform requirement. Remove or replace it when the former site is no longer a useful arrival point.

Update the Google Business Profile without creating a duplicate

Google’s guidance centers on an accurate real-world address and one profile per business. A restaurant that is the same business moving should first use its claimed, verified profile and edit the address and other customer information. Creating a second page for the same location can split customer signals and leave both addresses visible.

Prepare the profile edit

  • Use the verified owner or representative account that manages the profile.
  • Have the complete street address and the correct map pin ready.
  • Confirm the public phone number, website, business category and photos that customers should see.
  • Prepare the new hours, including separate service hours when the restaurant offers dine-in, takeout, delivery or drive-through service.
  • Make sure the new storefront can meet Google’s signage requirement if the profile displays an address: the business must maintain permanent fixed signage bearing the business name.

Change the profile details

  1. Open the restaurant’s claimed Google Business Profile while signed in as a verified representative.
  2. Edit the address to the precise new real-world location, including suite or unit details where relevant.
  3. Check the map pin and move it to the customer entrance or the correct building position if Google places it inaccurately.
  4. Review the phone number, website, business category and photos. Replace information that belongs only to the former site.
  5. Enter the hours that describe when customers can use each service. Save the changes and note any verification or review message Google displays.
  6. Search for the business as a customer after the edit is published. Check the address, pin, phone, website, hours, photos and directions from both desktop and mobile views.

Google says verified representatives can provide or edit the address, contact information, business type and photos. Website ownership verification, knowledge-panel updates and structured data can improve the site’s presence, but they complement rather than replace correcting the Business Profile address.

Set restaurant hours according to the service offered

Google’s restaurant guidance says hours should represent when diners can sit down and eat. If dine-in is not possible, use takeout hours; drive-through hours come next where that service exists, and delivery is the last resort. Do not enter delivery hours as the restaurant’s main hours when guests can dine in during a different period.

Do not open a second Google profile for the move

Google states that there should be only one profile per business and cautions against duplicate pages. Do not create a new profile simply because the street address changed. If a separate business genuinely operates at the new address under a different identity, that is a different fact pattern; otherwise, update the existing claimed profile and resolve any duplicate that already appeared through Google’s current owner-support process.

Decide whether Yelp needs a new page or an update

Yelp’s relocation treatment depends on how much the move changes the consumer experience. It is not a universal instruction to create a new page. For businesses where location and ambience are a core part of the experience, Yelp says it typically creates a new page and marks the former page as moved. Original reviews and photos generally do not transfer. A move that does not substantially change the experience may be handled as an update to the existing page.

Use the experience test

Question If the answer is yes Likely Yelp approach
Does the new setting materially change the atmosphere, neighborhood, access or physical experience? Customers will experience the restaurant differently even if the name and menu remain similar. Yelp commonly creates a new page and marks the former page moved for this kind of location-centered business.
Is the move nearby with substantially the same customer experience? Layout, ambience, service and access remain broadly comparable. An update to the existing page may be appropriate.
Are you unsure which treatment applies? The relocation does not fit neatly into either case. Use Yelp’s current owner-support process and provide a public announcement explaining the move.

Give Yelp evidence it can verify

Keep the relocation announcement on the restaurant website or an active social page. Yelp identifies that public confirmation as possible external evidence when it reviews a substantial move. Make the address complete, use a direct local phone number where available, and keep the hours consistent with the website and other public material. Yelp may reject changes it cannot verify.

Do not promise that reviews or photos will follow the business. Under Yelp’s guidance for a new page after a material relocation, original reviews and photos generally will not transfer. Explain the new address clearly to customers instead of trying to preserve an old page by leaving outdated location details in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Synchronize every other customer path

A listing update is successful only when a customer can complete the whole journey—from finding the restaurant to arriving at the correct entrance or placing an order. Work through this inventory rather than relying on a single directory edit.

Use a transition timeline that prevents mixed messages

The dates below are a practical operating plan, not a platform-mandated schedule. Adjust them to the certainty of your construction, licensing and opening date.

Phase Actions Customer-facing result
Fact confirmation Approve the address, pin, opening date, closure dates, hours, phone, website, ordering and reservation destinations. Everyone works from one accurate fact sheet.
Announcement preparation Write the website notice, social post, email or text version, old-site sign and staff response. The same core wording is ready for every active channel.
Early notice Publish once the date is dependable; add directions and access information. Regulars have time to change travel plans.
Platform updates Edit Google, submit the appropriate Yelp change, and update the website, reservations, ordering and directories. Search and ordering paths begin pointing to the new location.
Transition period Keep the old-address notice visible, monitor calls and messages, and correct repeated confusion. Visitors who follow old information receive a clear redirect.
Opening-day verification Open each major listing and ordering path as a customer; test directions, phone, hours and links. The live customer journey matches the announcement.

Verify the live customer experience after publishing

Do not assume that saving an edit means every public surface has changed. Use a browser or phone that is not signed in to the owner account and inspect what a normal customer sees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the customer-path check

  1. Search the restaurant name and the new address. Confirm that the primary result shows the new location, not the former one.
  2. Open the map listing and select directions. Check the pin, entrance, parking note and estimated route.
  3. Call the published phone number. Confirm that the greeting identifies the current location and explains any temporary closure.
  4. Open the website, menu, reservation page and ordering page from the listing. Look for old address text in headers, PDFs, checkout screens and confirmation emails.
  5. Check dine-in, takeout, delivery and drive-through hours against the actual operating schedule.
  6. Review social profiles and directory pages for an old bio, pinned post, map link or contact button.
  7. Visit or inspect the former location’s public-facing notice and ensure it gives the new address and effective date.

Record exceptions instead of relying on memory

Keep a simple audit sheet with the channel, URL or profile name, date checked, displayed address, displayed hours, phone result, directions result and correction status. Assign one person to own each unresolved item. This makes it easier to spot a stale menu or an old automated message after the main listings look correct.

Fix the most common relocation failures

Google shows two profiles

Do not maintain both pages as if they are current. Google requires one profile per business. Use the verified profile and the current owner-support process to report or resolve the duplicate, then check which page appears in search and maps. Keep the public website announcement available to establish the move.

The map pin is on the wrong road or entrance

Edit the profile’s map position, save it, and test turn-by-turn directions from a customer device. Add an entrance or parking instruction on the website and ordering pages when the correct arrival point is not obvious.

An edit is rejected or remains pending

Review the complete address, direct local phone number, public hours and website announcement. Remove conflicting old details from pages you control, then use the provider’s current owner-support process with the public evidence of the relocation. Avoid submitting multiple contradictory edits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yelp keeps the old page active

Apply the experience test rather than assuming that every move requires a new page. If the relocation materially changes the location-centered experience, provide the website or social announcement and request the treatment Yelp describes for a moved business. If the experience is substantially the same, request an update to the existing page and supply the complete, verifiable details.

Customers still arrive at the former site

Check the old address in search snippets, menus, reservation confirmations, social bios, delivery apps, printed material and the former storefront. Add or refresh the temporary sign, pin the relocation notice and have staff give the same concise directions by phone and message.

Hours conflict across platforms

Choose the actual service schedule first, then correct every listing and customer document to match it. For Google, use dine-in hours when diners can sit down and eat; use takeout, drive-through or delivery hours only when those are the relevant available services. Check for holiday or special hours that still reference the old site.

Final relocation checklist

  • New full address approved and map pin tested.
  • First service date and any closure dates confirmed.
  • Dine-in, takeout, delivery and drive-through hours separated where necessary.
  • Phone, website, reservation and ordering destinations tested.
  • Website announcement and permanent location page updated.
  • Google’s verified profile edited, with no duplicate created.
  • Permanent fixed business-name signage available at the address shown on Google.
  • Yelp treatment chosen according to the degree of experience change, with public confirmation available.
  • Menus, flyers, PDFs, receipts, packaging, social profiles and directory pages checked.
  • Former-site notice installed and kept visible through the transition.
  • Customer-path audit completed after the public edits appear.
