Lane assignments and signaling details differ by jurisdiction, so local signs and the current driver handbook always take priority.
What to do at a roundabout
A roundabout is a one-way circular intersection around a central island. Approaching vehicles yield before entering; vehicles already in the circle generally have priority. The design only works when drivers make their movement predictable: select the correct lane before entry, follow the marked path, avoid stopping or passing in the circle, and leave without cutting across another lane.

The exact convention is not identical everywhere. Ontario, California, British Columbia, Nevada, Victoria and South Australia publish guidance with differences in lane assignments and signal timing. Treat the principles below as a safety framework, not as a replacement for the law where you drive.

Why lane choice matters before you enter
At a single-lane roundabout, lane choice is straightforward. At a multilane roundabout, your approach lane determines which circulating lane you can use and how you reach the exit. A correct destination choice does not authorize you to cross a lane later. Read the signs and arrows early enough to move into the designated lane while you are still on the approach.

Read every control, not just the road name
- Look for overhead or roadside destination signs.
- Follow lane-use arrows painted on the pavement.
- Check solid and broken lane lines and any turn-only markings.
- Scan for a pedestrian crossing at the approach and another at the exit.
- Reduce speed so you can stop at the yield line if necessary.
If a sign or arrow conflicts with a general rule you remember from another place, the sign or arrow controls your movement. A roundabout’s geometry can also assign lanes differently from a nearby intersection, even within the same country.
Examples of local lane conventions
Ontario’s Official Ministry of Transportation Driver’s Handbook gives a local example in which the left lane may serve a left turn or straight movement and the right lane may serve a right turn or straight movement. It cautions drivers not to enter from the right lane to turn left. That is an Ontario example, not a universal formula.
California’s Department of Motor Vehicles says lane choice at a multilane roundabout is based on the destination and directs drivers to follow signs and pavement markings. Victoria’s road-rule guidance specifies approach lanes for certain multilane turns and says a straight-through movement may use any lane unless a lane is marked for a turn only. Those differences are why memorizing a left-turn-equals-left-lane rule can be unsafe.
Step-by-step: approaching and entering
- Decide which exit you need. Count exits if that helps, but use the destination signs and the actual lane arrows as your authority.
- Position early. Move into the lane designated for that exit while you are still on the approach. Do not wait until you are beside the central island.
- Slow and scan. Check the crossing, the yield line, the circulating lanes and vehicles approaching from every relevant direction. At a multilane roundabout, a vehicle in a farther lane can still conflict with your entry.
- Prepare to yield. Reach the yield line at a speed that allows a complete stop. You do not have to stop when no conflicting traffic is present and local rules permit entry, but you must be able to stop.
- Give priority to circulating traffic. Wait for a safe gap. Do not enter beside a vehicle already in the roundabout if its path could intersect yours.
- Enter in the indicated direction. Follow the one-way circulation around the island and stay in the lane selected for your movement.
How to judge a safe gap
A gap is safe only when you can enter without forcing a circulating driver to brake, swerve or change lanes. Consider the speed and distance of every approaching vehicle, not only the vehicle closest to the entrance. At a multilane entry, check all lanes; the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia specifically warns that traffic in another approaching lane may be easy to miss.
Never treat a turn signal on a circulating vehicle as a guarantee that it will exit. Wait until its movement is clear and you can enter without conflict. If you cannot confidently identify a gap, continue waiting.

Right of way: who yields to whom?
The common rule in the Ontario, California, Nevada and British Columbia guidance reviewed is that traffic already in the roundabout has priority over traffic entering. The entering driver yields at the entrance. This priority answers only the entry question; it does not let a circulating driver change lanes across another vehicle or force an exit.
At the entrance
- Yield at the marked line to vehicles already circulating.
- Yield to any traffic whose path would conflict with your entry.
- Enter only after checking all relevant lanes and confirming a safe gap.
- Do not assume a vehicle will slow simply because you have reached the line.
At the exit crossing
People walking may be crossing where you leave the roundabout. Nevada Department of Transportation and ICBC both call attention to the exit crossing. Slow before the crossing, keep it clear, and yield as required by local law. Looking only toward circulating traffic can make you miss a pedestrian at your left or right as you exit.

Do not compensate for another driver’s error by cutting across its path. Hold your lane, reduce speed if needed, and let the conflict clear. A vehicle’s incorrect position does not give you permission to cross a marked lane or make an abrupt exit.
How to drive inside the roundabout
Stay in the lane you chose
Once inside, maintain your lane and follow the lane lines around the island. Avoid changing lanes in the circle unless a local layout and marking expressly require it and the movement can be completed safely. Sudden lateral movements are difficult for drivers beside or behind you to anticipate.
Keep moving when it is safe
Ontario advises drivers not to stop in the roundabout except to avoid a collision. California advises against stopping or passing. Do not stop to reconsider an exit, and do not pass a slower vehicle within the circle. If traffic is backed up beyond your exit, wait before entering rather than blocking the circulating lane or the exit crossing.

Follow the island, not a shortcut
Travel only in the direction shown by the signs and road markings. Do not drive across the central island, reverse, or use an opposing lane to reach an exit. If your position no longer matches the exit you intended, continue around and try again.
Signals: what is common and what changes by jurisdiction
Signal rules are one of the clearest differences among official handbooks. North American guidance reviewed here emphasizes signaling the exit. Victoria and South Australia describe movement-specific signals on approach as well. A signal must communicate your actual movement under the law where you are driving; copying a foreign sequence can mislead other road users.
| Jurisdictional guidance | Approach signal described | Exit signal described | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ontario | The handbook examples focus on lane selection and movement. | Signal right after passing the exit before the one you intend to take. | Use the Ontario handbook and signs for the complete local rule. |
| California | Choose the entry lane from your destination and markings. | Signal when exiting. | Lane choice in multilane circles is destination-based. |
| Victoria | Do not indicate on approach for a left turn or straight movement; indicate right on approach for a right turn. | Indicate left when exiting if possible. | These are Victorian road rules, not a worldwide convention. |
| South Australia | Movement-specific approach signaling is described for single-lane roundabouts. | Follow the local exit-signaling requirement. | Check the current South Australian rule for your exact layout. |
| Nevada and British Columbia | Yield and lane-position guidance is emphasized. | Signal clearly as required by local law; ICBC advises signaling right before the desired exit. | Follow the applicable state or provincial handbook. |
A practical signaling sequence
- Use the approach signal required by your jurisdiction and the marked movement.
- Keep the signal consistent with the lane and exit you actually intend to take.
- Signal for the exit at the point required locally and early enough to be useful without confusing drivers at an earlier exit.
- Cancel the signal after leaving the circle if it does not cancel automatically.
Ontario’s guidance places the right signal after you pass the exit immediately before your intended exit. California says to signal when exiting. ICBC advises signaling right before the desired exit. Victoria’s guidance adds an approach convention and says to indicate left when exiting if possible. These instructions cannot be merged into one global sequence; the current local rule controls.
Exiting without crossing another lane
As you approach your exit, confirm that your lane leads to it. Signal as required, reduce speed for the exit crossing, and check for pedestrians. Keep your steering smooth and leave from the lane assigned to your movement.
Do not swing across a neighboring lane to reach an exit. If another vehicle is beside you, wait rather than forcing it to brake. A correct signal does not give you priority to cross its path.

If you miss your exit
Continue around the roundabout and take the exit on the next pass. Ontario and California both give this advice. Do not stop in circulating traffic, reverse, cut across a lane, or turn sharply from the wrong lane. The extra circuit is safer and usually faster than an emergency maneuver.

Crossings can be located just before the yield line and just after an exit. Slow enough to see people approaching from either side. Never stop on a crosswalk or block it while waiting for circulating traffic. At the exit, complete your scan before accelerating away; a person may be crossing while your attention is still focused on vehicles inside the circle.
Common mistakes and the safer correction
| Mistake | Why it creates risk | Safer correction |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing a lane at the last second | Late movement can cross a lane line or surprise a vehicle beside you. | Read arrows and signs early and position before entry. |
| Assuming one left/right formula works everywhere | Roundabout geometry and legal conventions vary. | Follow local signs, arrows and the current handbook. |
| Entering because the nearest lane looks clear | A vehicle in another lane may conflict with your path. | Check all approaching and circulating lanes. |
| Stopping inside to think | A stopped vehicle disrupts predictable circulation. | Continue around and reassess on the next circuit. |
| Changing lanes beside the island | Other drivers may be unable to react to a lateral move. | Hold your selected lane. |
| Exiting from the wrong lane | You may cut across a vehicle or the exit crossing. | Continue around and use the exit on the next pass. |
| Relying on another vehicle’s signal | A signal does not prove that the driver will leave. | Wait until the vehicle’s path is clear. |
| Watching only circulating traffic | A pedestrian can be present at the exit. | Scan the crossing before and during the exit. |
Rules that vary: a jurisdiction checklist
Before driving an unfamiliar roundabout, identify the jurisdiction and check its current official handbook or road-rules page. Confirm four items:
- Entry priority: which traffic the yield line controls and which direction you must scan.
- Lane assignment: which approach lane serves each exit and whether a straight movement may use more than one lane.
- Approach signaling: whether a left, straight or right movement requires a signal before entry.
- Exit signaling and crossings: when to signal and what yielding rule applies at the pedestrian crossing.
For example, Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation, California DMV, Transport Victoria, Nevada DOT, ICBC and South Australia’s My Licence pages each explain their own conventions. A rule learned in one of these jurisdictions should not be presented as the law in another.

Special situations at multilane roundabouts
Heavy traffic
Do not enter merely because the queue ahead appears to be moving. Make sure there is room beyond the entrance for your vehicle; otherwise you can stop on the circle or block a crossing. Wait at the yield line until the path through the roundabout is open.

Unclear or worn markings
Reduce speed and treat the visible signs and lane lines conservatively. If you cannot determine which lane serves your destination, stay in a lane that allows a legal continuation rather than making a sudden crossing. If necessary, continue around and read the signs again.
Night, rain or glare
Increase your following distance and lower your approach speed so lane arrows, yield markings, vehicles and pedestrians are easier to identify. Do not rely on a signal that you cannot clearly see; wait for a safe, unambiguous gap.
A compact mental routine
Use the sequence Destination, Lane, Yield, Enter, Hold, Signal, Crossing:
- Destination: identify the exit.
- Lane: take the marked lane before entry.
- Yield: give way to circulating traffic.
- Enter: use a safe gap only.
- Hold: maintain your lane and keep moving unless avoiding a collision.
- Signal: follow the local approach and exit rules.
- Crossing: check for pedestrians as you leave.
If any step becomes uncertain, keep circulating and try again rather than improvising across a lane.
Bottom line for a safe roundabout trip
Roundabout safety depends less on memorizing a single maneuver than on making each movement predictable. Let local signs and arrows determine your lane, yield to traffic already circulating, check every relevant lane, stay in position, signal under the rule that applies where you are, and protect the pedestrian crossing at the exit. Missing an exit is never an emergency: go around and take it on the next circuit.
