Slow before the first circle, read its signs and lane arrows, yield at the entry to traffic already circulating, stay in the lane selected for your movement, and leave through the signed exit. Then repeat that process at the second circle. Watch both circles for marked pedestrian crossings, cyclists and vehicles that need extra room, especially trucks and buses.
Because dogbone layouts and lane assignments vary, the signs and pavement markings at the interchange take priority over any memorized diagram. The safest approach is deliberate: identify the route before each circle, make one decision at a time and never assume the second circle is marked exactly like the first.

What a dogbone roundabout is
“Dogbone” is a common name for a double-roundabout interchange. The design places a roundabout at each ramp terminal of a diamond interchange. The two circles are connected by the cross street, while freeway on-ramps and off-ramps attach to the circles. Virginia’s transportation department also calls this arrangement a double roundabout or raindrop interchange and describes the circles as unsignalized, with traffic traveling counterclockwise around each central island in the United States. See the Virginia Department of Transportation’s double-roundabout guide for an illustrated example.
A typical circle has four legs: two two-way cross-street legs, one ramp-entry leg and one ramp-exit leg. Nearby driveways or access roads can change that arrangement. The Federal Highway Administration and National Transportation Library describe the geometry and its variations in Research and Findings on Roundabouts and Innovative Intersections for High-Speed and Rural Locations.

The important practical distinction is that each circle has its own entry, yield line, lane markings and exits. A driver going straight on the cross street normally exits the first circle onto the short connector, then enters the second circle and takes the signed onward route. You must reassess the second circle rather than carrying the first circle’s lane choice forward automatically.
Why a memorized route can be unsafe
There is no universal dogbone lane diagram. One interchange may have a single circulating lane; another may have multiple lanes, different approach arrows or additional access points. Crosswalks can also be placed and controlled differently. The approach signs may assign lanes by destination, while arrows on the pavement may require a particular lane for a ramp, cross-street or other movement.
For that reason, treat a dogbone as a sequence of two local traffic-control problems. Use the route information visible at the site, obey the jurisdiction’s traffic law and be prepared for the second circle to use different lane assignments from the first. Guidance from the Federal Highway Administration, the Indiana Department of Transportation and the North Carolina Department of Transportation all emphasize reading the signs and markings at the particular roundabout.
Approach the first circle
1. Reduce speed and scan early
Begin slowing before the roundabout so you have time to read destination signs, lane arrows, the yield line and any pedestrian crossing. Keep looking beyond the central island for vehicles already circulating and for the exit you need. Avoid making a late lane change or abrupt turn to reach an exit.
2. Identify the correct approach lane
Choose the lane indicated for your intended movement before you reach the entry. A single-lane approach is straightforward, but a multilane approach may assign different lanes to different exits. Follow the arrow and destination sign at that site, even if another dogbone you know uses a different arrangement.
3. Check the crossing and the circle
Look for people at the marked crossing and for cyclists or vehicles already in the circle. A crossing may be located before the yield line, at the entry, or near an exit. Be ready to stop where the site’s markings and signs require it; do not stop in the circulating lane unless stopping is necessary to avoid a collision.

4. Yield at the entry
At a conventional modern roundabout, entering traffic generally yields to traffic already circulating. The FHWA’s roundabout guidance and INDOT’s instructions describe this basic priority. Enter only when the way is clear under the local signs and markings. A yield sign or line at the entry controls your decision; do not force a gap because you expect another driver to slow for you.

Follow the marked one-way path
Once you enter, travel in the direction shown around the central island. In the U.S. examples cited by VDOT and FHWA, that circulation is counterclockwise. Keep your steering and speed smooth, and position the vehicle within the lane you selected on approach.
Hold your lane
Do not change lanes while circulating in a multilane circle. The North Carolina Department of Transportation specifically advises drivers to choose the lane indicated by signs and markings before entry and remain in that lane through the roundabout. If you discover that your lane does not serve the exit you wanted, continue safely to the next available exit rather than cutting across another lane.
Track the exits in order
Read the exit signs as you pass them and confirm that the connector toward the second circle is the one you need. Keep scanning for a pedestrian at the exit and for a cyclist or larger vehicle alongside you. Signal right before leaving where signaling is appropriate under local practice, then cross the exit line without swinging into an adjacent lane.
Use the connector between circles
After leaving the first circle, you are on the short cross-street connection. Do not treat this segment as part of a single oversized roundabout. Follow its lane markings and signs, maintain a safe gap and prepare for the second circle’s approach control. The first circle’s exit lane may not correspond to the second circle’s entry lane, so avoid drifting across lanes on the connector.

- Enter the first circle from the approach lane marked for the cross-street movement.
- Take the exit leading to the connector between the circles.
- Read the second circle’s advance signs and arrows before its yield line.
- Enter the second circle only after yielding as required.
- Follow the second circle’s marked path and take the signed onward cross-street exit.
This sequence is typical, not a universal diagram. Ramps, local access roads and lane assignments can alter the exact path.
Negotiate the second circle as a new decision
Read its signs again
Before the second entry, identify which exit leads to your destination and which lane serves it. Do not assume that the lane used for a through movement in the first circle is correct in the second. Check for a new yield line, crosswalk, lane arrow or destination sign.
Yield and enter only when clear
Apply the same entry rule you used at the first circle: yield to circulating traffic and comply with the site’s controls. A vehicle approaching from the connector does not automatically have priority over traffic already in the second circle.

Exit without crossing lanes
Remain in the marked lane, watch for people crossing at the exit and signal right before leaving where appropriate. After the exit, return to the normal cross-street lane only when the road markings permit it.
Handling common movements
Continuing on the cross street
Plan for two separate entries and two separate exits. The connector is the midpoint, not a place to relax your attention. Confirm the onward route at the second circle, because its signs may assign lanes differently.
Taking a freeway ramp
Use the approach lane and exit signed for the ramp. If more than one lane is present, select the ramp lane before entering and hold it through the circle. Verify that the ramp you want is an exit from the current circle; the opposite ramp may be attached to the other circle.

Leaving for a local access road
Some dogbone interchanges include nearby access points beyond the typical four legs. Give those signs and arrows the same attention as a freeway ramp or cross-street exit. Do not infer the road’s destination from its position alone.

Multilane circles require an earlier decision because vehicles may be traveling beside you. Use the advance sign or pavement arrow to select the lane for your exit before the yield line. Keep that lane while circulating, maintain awareness of the vehicle to your side and leave through the lane marked for your movement.
- Do not pass another vehicle or weave between lanes inside the circle.
- Do not stop in a circulating lane to wait for an exit unless stopping is necessary to prevent a collision.
- Do not cross a solid line, splitter marking or other restriction to reach a missed exit.
- If you are uncertain, continue to a safe exit and follow lawful directions to rejoin your route rather than making a sudden correction.
The exact line colors, arrows and lane-use signs are site-specific. Follow the markings you can see instead of applying a generic left-lane or right-lane rule.

Marked crossings
Expect a marked pedestrian crossing at an entry or exit. Scan the sidewalk and refuge area before moving, and be prepared to yield where the crossing control requires it. Crossings at the two circles may not be in identical locations, so repeat the scan at every approach and exit.
Cyclists
Cyclists may be in the circulating lane or crossing an approach. The North Carolina Department of Transportation advises drivers not to pass a cyclist inside the roundabout. Slow down, keep a safe lateral position and wait until you are clear of the circle before passing where it is lawful and safe.

Give large vehicles room
Trucks and buses may need more space to maneuver through a circle. Their rear wheels can track differently from the front of the vehicle, and a driver may need to use more than one lane where the design permits. The NCDOT roundabout guidance advises giving large vehicles room. Do not pass a truck or bus in the circle, do not drive alongside it when the lane narrows and do not try to squeeze between it and an exit.
If a large vehicle is entering, wait for a clear opportunity rather than forcing it to brake or change position. At an exit, remain alert for the vehicle’s wide turn and keep clear of its path.
What to do when you make a mistake
You chose the wrong lane before entry
Do not move across another lane at the yield line or inside the circle. Follow the lane’s permitted movement, take the next safe exit and use lawful roads or navigation directions to correct your route away from the roundabout.

You miss the intended exit
Stay in your lane and continue to the next available exit. A missed exit is safer than braking in the circle, reversing, stopping beside the island or cutting across traffic.
You are unsure which circle you are approaching
Reduce speed, read the advance sign and identify the yield line. If traffic conditions make the decision unclear, wait at the entry until you can see the lane arrows and circulating traffic clearly. Once through the first circle, repeat the process rather than relying on memory.
An emergency vehicle approaches
Emergency-vehicle procedures can differ by jurisdiction. Follow the current local rule and the instructions of the emergency vehicle or traffic officer, and never block the circle or its entries and exits while trying to yield.
How to compare two dogbone sites
If you regularly drive more than one dogbone interchange, compare the features that affect decisions rather than assuming the sites operate alike:
- Advance destination signs and the lane arrows on each approach.
- The number of approach and circulating lanes.
- Where pedestrian crossings are placed and how they are controlled.
- Which ramp or cross-street movement each circle serves.
- Whether nearby access roads add legs beyond the typical four-leg arrangement.
These observations help you prepare, but they do not replace reading the signs on the day of travel. Construction, restriping or a temporary closure can change the usable lane or exit.
A practical pre-entry checklist
- Reduce speed before the first circle.
- Read the destination signs and pavement arrows.
- Identify the yield line and scan for pedestrians.
- Check for circulating vehicles, cyclists and large vehicles.
- Enter only when the local control allows a safe gap.
- Stay in the selected lane and follow the marked one-way direction.
- Signal right before the intended exit where appropriate.
- Scan the exit crossing and continue onto the connector.
- Read the second circle’s signs and markings from scratch.
- Repeat the yield, lane and exit steps at the second circle.
The core habit is simple: slow, read, yield, stay in lane and exit according to the markings—first circle, then second. Site-specific controls always govern the actual maneuver.
