How to Move a Suspended Load with a Telehandler Without Excessive Sway

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move a suspended load with a telehandler only when the exact machine, attachment and task are authorised by the manufacturer and applicable site rules. Before travelling, use the correct capacity chart, include the load and rigging in the capacity assessment, inspect the route and ground, and establish communication and exclusion controls. During the move, use the boom and load position specified for that telehandler, then accelerate, steer, turn and brake slowly and smoothly. A tag or restraint line can limit rotation when the lift plan calls for one, but it cannot remove wind, side-load or stability hazards.

Start with the machine-specific rules

There is no universal telehandler setting for a suspended load. The permitted boom angle, load height, travel speed, terrain limits and attachment configuration depend on the model, its capacity chart, the attachment and the manufacturer’s procedure. A method that is acceptable for one telehandler must not be transferred to another.

Confirm that the move is allowed

Obtain the current operator manual and a legible capacity chart for the exact telehandler and attachment combination. Check that the manufacturer permits transporting a suspended load with that attachment. Genie’s operator guidance warns against lifting a suspended load without the correct chart for the machine and attachment. If the manual does not authorise the proposed configuration, do not improvise a procedure.

Also check the rules that apply to your location and type of work. OSHA’s construction-crane provisions contain capacity and travel-with-load requirements, but the cited crane rule is not automatically a universal telehandler regulation. Verify whether the equipment, project and operation fall within that rule. UK projects should also check the relevant HSE telehandler guidance. In every jurisdiction, the manufacturer’s instructions and the site lift plan still need to be followed.

Use the chart for the complete configuration

The capacity assessment must account for the load, slings, shackles, hooks, lifting beam and any other rigging, not merely the object’s nominal weight. The chart must match the installed attachment and the boom position used for travel. If the load centre, radius or boom configuration changes, reassess capacity before moving.

Plan the load, route and work area

Inspect the load and rigging

  • Confirm the weight, dimensions, centre of gravity and possible snag points.
  • Verify that the attachment and rigging are rated and suitable for the load shape and connection points.
  • Check that slings, hooks, shackles and connection points are correctly installed and secured.
  • Identify whether the load can rotate, spill, collapse or catch wind when it leaves the ground.
  • Make sure the load will remain within the charted capacity throughout the route, including while turning or travelling over changes in level.

Survey ground support and the route

Assess the surface’s bearing capacity, slope, cross-grade, potholes, ramps, edges and transitions. Identify overhead obstructions, power lines, doorways, scaffolding, pipework and other collision hazards. Plan where the machine will start, stop and set down the load, and ensure there is enough clearance for the boom, rigging and load to move without striking anything.

OSHA’s travel-with-load provision, where applicable, calls for a competent-person assessment of load position, boom location, ground support, route, obstructions and safe speed. Treat those factors as a planning framework, but verify the rule’s applicability to the specific telehandler operation rather than presenting it as a blanket requirement.

Account for weather and visibility

Wind can make a suspended load swing or rotate and can impose dangerous side loads even when a tag line is attached. Check the manufacturer’s weather limits and the site’s wind policy. Reconsider the move if gusts, rain, dust, glare, darkness or fog reduce the operator’s ability to see the load, the route or the guide persons.

Establish an exclusion area

Keep workers and other people outside the load’s hazardous area and the telehandler’s travel path. Include the space into which the load could swing, not just its footprint when stationary. Assign only the people needed for the lift, define who gives instructions, and agree on a stop signal that everyone understands.

Set the boom and load for travel

Use the travel position stated in the actual telehandler manual. In general, a retracted boom and a low load can reduce unwanted movement and help preserve stability, but the exact limits are model-specific.

JLG 1075 ANSI example

JLG’s 2019 1075 ANSI Operation Manual gives a suspended-load transport procedure with these limits:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Control Value in the JLG 1075 procedure How to interpret it
Boom extension Fully retracted Specific to the stated 1075 procedure; do not assume every telehandler requires full retraction.
Load height No more than 11.8 in (300 mm) above the ground A model-specific maximum, not a universal telehandler limit.
Boom angle No more than 45 degrees Applies to the identified procedure and machine.
Travel speed Walking speed, 0.9 mph (0.4 m/s) or less Use the actual machine’s stated speed and conditions where they differ.

The manual’s wording is: “Only transport load at walking speed, 0.9 mph (0.4 m/s), or less.” That figure belongs to the 1075 ANSI procedure. It is not evidence of a single safe speed for all telehandlers, attachments, loads or sites.

Drive to prevent sway

Start without a jerk

Once the load is clear and the route is confirmed, apply power progressively. A sudden start causes the load to lag and then swing forward or backward. Take up slack in the rigging under control and watch the load’s first movement before committing to the route.

Keep a steady, slow speed

Travel at the lowest speed that maintains control and visibility, within the machine-specific limit. Smooth throttle inputs reduce pendulum motion. Avoid rapid speed changes, and do not accelerate to make up time. If the load begins to move, reducing inputs and stopping in a planned safe position is generally safer than trying to outrun the swing.

Steer gradually

Make wide, gradual turns where the route allows. A sharp steering input makes the machine change direction before the suspended load does, producing lateral swing and side loading. Check clearances continuously through the turn, including the outside edge of the load and the arc of any rigging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Brake progressively

Release travel power early and brake smoothly. Abrupt braking can throw the load toward the telehandler and then back in the opposite direction. Plan the stopping point so the operator does not need an emergency stop caused by a blocked route, a person entering the area or a late signal.

Cross uneven ground cautiously

Changes in level, potholes and cross-grade travel can transfer movement into the load. Approach transitions squarely when possible, keep the approved boom and load position, and reduce speed before the uneven section. Do not rely on a low load to make an unsuitable surface safe; reassess ground support and the route if the machine cannot remain stable and controlled.

Do not use frame levelling to chase the load

Genie warns against using telehandler frame levelling to compensate for load swing. Frame levelling is not a substitute for proper route selection, a permitted boom position or controlled travel. If the load begins to swing, maintain safe machine control and follow the site’s stop and recovery procedure rather than making an unapproved levelling correction.

Use tag or restraint lines correctly

OSHA says a tag or restraint line must be used when needed to prevent hazardous load rotation. Genie advises properly tethering loads to restrict movement, while also warning that wind can still create dangerous side loads with tag lines attached.

The lift plan and attachment instructions determine whether a line is appropriate, where it is connected and how it is handled. The available guidance does not establish one universal line material, length or rating, so do not select a specification by rule of thumb. Match the line and handling method to the load, rigging, environment and manufacturer’s instructions.

Coordinate the operator and guide persons

JLG’s procedure requires guide persons and the operator to remain in constant communication and visual contact. Guide persons must not stand between the load and the telehandler, where a movement could crush them. Position guides where they can see the load and route while remaining outside the possible swing path.

Agree on signals before lifting

Use the site’s designated signal system or radio protocol. Identify one person as the signal authority unless the plan specifies another arrangement. Anyone should be empowered to give a stop signal when an unsafe condition appears; the operator should not resume until the situation and communication are clear.

Protect visibility

If the operator cannot see the load, the route or the guide person as required by the manual, stop and use the approved communication method. Do not continue on an ambiguous or relayed signal. A guide person should never walk backward into an obstruction or place themselves under the load to improve the operator’s view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when sway develops

  1. Stop adding movement. Ease off the accelerator and avoid sudden steering or braking that could amplify the swing.
  2. Keep people clear. Maintain the exclusion zone and have guide persons give the agreed stop signal if the load or line becomes unpredictable.
  3. Stop in a safe location. Follow the machine manual and lift plan for setting the load down or securing it. Do not lower or reposition it into an obstruction, unstable surface or occupied area.
  4. Reassess the cause. Check speed, boom and load position, wind, cross-grade, route condition, rigging and visibility.
  5. Change the plan or abandon the move. If the manufacturer does not permit the configuration, capacity or ground conditions cannot be met, or communication and personnel controls have failed, do not continue.

There is no safe technique that cancels momentum after an excessive swing has developed. The correct response is controlled stopping and application of the approved procedure, not an improvised machine action.

Pre-move and travel checklist

  • Current operator manual and capacity chart are available and legible.
  • The machine, attachment and suspended-load task are authorised.
  • Load, rigging and connection points have been inspected and included in the capacity assessment.
  • Ground support, gradients, cross-grade, route, clearances and stopping area have been assessed.
  • Wind, weather, lighting and visibility are within the manual and site limits.
  • Exclusion zones, guide-person positions and communication signals are established.
  • Boom angle, extension and load height are set to the actual machine’s travel procedure.
  • Any tag or restraint line is specified by the lift plan and handled from a safe position.
  • Acceleration, steering, turns and braking will be smooth, with speed kept within the machine-specific limit.
  • A stop and recovery method is understood before the load leaves the ground.

How to compare two telehandler procedures

When evaluating equipment or lift methods, compare the controls that actually determine sway and stability rather than comparing a single headline speed.

Comparison point Question to ask
Manufacturer authorisation Does the manual expressly permit the attachment and suspended-load transport?
Capacity-chart coverage Does the chart cover the exact machine, attachment, load centre, radius and boom position?
Boom and load position What extension, angle and maximum travel height are specified?
Travel speed What maximum speed is stated, and under what terrain and load conditions?
Terrain and grade Are there limits for cross-grade, slopes, uneven ground or transitions?
Weather What wind or visibility restrictions apply to the load and attachment?
Guide persons What communication, visual-contact and positioning rules are required?
Stopping criteria When must the operator stop, set down or revise the plan?
Restraint line Is a line required or appropriate for this load, and does the plan define safe handling?

Common errors that increase sway

  • Using another model’s numbers: Treating 300 mm, 45 degrees or 0.9 mph as universal ignores the qualification in the JLG 1075 manual.
  • Relying on the object’s weight alone: Rigging weight, load centre and boom geometry affect capacity.
  • Travelling too fast for the route: A speed below the manual maximum can still be unsuitable on a cross-grade, rough surface or in gusty wind.
  • Making abrupt corrections: Sudden steering, braking or acceleration adds energy to the pendulum motion.
  • Assuming a tag line solves the problem: It can restrict rotation but cannot eliminate wind or side loading.
  • Putting a guide person in the pinch point: The guide must not stand between the load and telehandler.
  • Using frame levelling as a sway control: Follow the manufacturer’s warning and do not chase the load with an unapproved function.
  • Continuing after communication is lost: Stop when the operator cannot maintain the required visual contact or signal clarity.

Bottom line for a controlled move

Excessive sway is prevented before travel: authorise the task, use the exact capacity chart, plan the route and weather, set the manufacturer-approved boom and load position, and establish safe communication. Then move at a slow, steady pace with gentle starts, turns and stops. If the load, wind, ground, visibility or personnel controls become unsafe, stop and revise or cancel the move. The JLG 1075 figures of 300 mm load height, 45-degree boom angle and 0.9 mph maximum speed illustrate a particular procedure, not a universal telehandler rule.
