How to Measure for a Replacement Shower Screen

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure a replacement shower screen only after the tile, tray, curb and other finished surfaces are installed. Record the opening width at the bottom, middle and top; measure the required height from a clearly identified finished datum; check wall plumb and base level; then send those opening dimensions, variations and a sketch to the supplier. Do not turn an opening measurement into a glass measurement yourself: the screen maker must confirm deductions for channels, profiles, clamps, hinges and clearances.

What you are measuring

A replacement screen is ordered to suit a finished opening, not an unfinished stud bay. The opening is the space available between the surfaces that will receive the screen. The finished glass may be smaller than that opening because the design needs operating clearance, seals, channels, brackets or other hardware. Those deductions vary by model and layout.

Your job is to create an accurate record of the opening and its condition. The supplier then uses the product specification and hardware arrangement to determine glass sizes and adjustment ranges. A dimension that is correct for a fixed panel may be wrong for a hinged door, and a deduction used for one corner enclosure must not be applied to an in-line screen.

Why finished surfaces and a replacement context matter

Measure from the actual finished wall and floor or shower-tray surfaces. Tile thickness, adhesive, grout lines and a tile edge running onto the tray can all change the usable opening. Ordering before tiling is complete is especially risky for frameless work, where there is less profile adjustment to hide an error.

Replacement work also raises a question that dimensions alone cannot answer: will the new door or panel fit an existing frame? The reviewed installation guidance does not establish a universal cross-brand compatibility rule. A replacement leaf depends on the original model, hinge locations, seals, glass thickness, frame geometry and the new product’s hardware. Identify the retained frame and ask the supplier to confirm compatibility before ordering.

Tools and preparation

  • A tape measure that can be read accurately at the fractions or millimetres your supplier uses.
  • A spirit level long enough to check each receiving wall and the curb or tray edge.
  • Paper and a pen for a sketch, readings and notes.
  • The existing screen’s model, installation instructions or photographs, if you intend to retain any frame, channel or hardware.
  • A second person to hold the tape or level on wide openings, where practical.

Draw the opening as viewed from outside the shower. Mark the left and right walls, curb or threshold, door swing, fixed panels, returns, angles, handles and any retained profile. Label every dimension with its location and unit. A clear sketch prevents a supplier from mistaking a bottom width for a top width or confusing the shower side with the outside face.

Step-by-step measuring procedure

1. Wait until the installation surfaces are finished

Complete wall coverings, waterproofing finishes, tile, grout, tray or curb installation before taking the final order measurements. Measure against the surfaces on which the screen will actually sit. If a trim piece, skirting, raised tile edge or seal will remain in the finished opening, include it in the condition you are measuring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the room is not finished, you can take preliminary dimensions for planning, but label them as provisional. Do not use them to order made-to-measure glass unless the supplier specifically instructs you how to allow for the unfinished layers.

2. Draw the opening and establish the viewing direction

Make the sketch while standing outside the shower. Show which side is the hinge side, where the door opens, and whether a fixed panel, return panel or in-line panel is present. For a corner or angled enclosure, draw every leg and record the angle or make a paper pattern where the supplier requests one.

Mark the measurement datum for height: for example, finished floor, top of the shower tray, top of the threshold or another point specified by the chosen product. A height without a datum is not an order-ready dimension.

  1. Along the curb, threshold or bottom of the opening.
  2. At the middle of the opening.
  3. Near the top of the opening.

Write down each actual reading rather than selecting the largest or smallest one silently. Manufacturer guidance for in-line doors commonly calls for top and bottom readings, while other measuring guides specify bottom, middle and top. Taking all three reveals whether the walls converge, diverge or bow.

For a wide opening, keep the tape level and measure to the same reference faces each time. If a wall has a tile lip, measure to the surface that the profile or glass will contact, not to a hidden substrate behind it. Repeat any reading that looks inconsistent and record the repeated value beside the first one.

4. Measure the required height from the correct datum

Measure the desired screen height on the left and right sides of the opening. If the screen spans a wide opening or includes a fixed panel, take an additional height reading at the centre. Record whether each value is from finished floor, the top of a tray, the top of a threshold or another manufacturer-defined line.

Some installation instructions use the top of a tub apron or shower threshold as the datum for one-piece or modular installations. In a tiled application, a product guide may treat the top of the tile as the maximum height. These are product-specific instructions, so use the datum stated for the screen you are buying rather than assuming that every supplier measures from the same place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check each wall for plumb

Hold the level vertically against every wall that will receive glass or a profile. A wall is out of plumb when it leans or varies from true vertical. Record both the amount and the direction of the deviation: for example, “right wall leans 6 mm toward the shower at the top.” Check in more than one vertical line if the tile surface appears wavy or has a pronounced joint.

Plumb affects where a door closes, how a seal contacts, and whether a fixed panel can sit against the wall without a visible wedge-shaped gap. Wall flatness and local irregularities can also influence the choice of channel, clamp or other hardware. Include photographs or a marked sketch if the variation is difficult to describe with one number.

6. Check the curb, tray or threshold for level

Place the level along the surface supporting the screen and note whether it is level from side to side and front to back. A horizontal surface that slopes is out of level. Record the direction and amount of the slope, not merely “not level.” A slope may be intentional for drainage, but the supplier still needs to know it when selecting seals and hardware.

Check the surface for a twist or a high spot as well. A level can show the general plane, while a straightedge or careful repeated level checks can reveal a local hump that would prevent a channel from sitting flat. Do not grind, pack or shim a finished tray as part of the measurement unless the installer has approved that correction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Record the product and layout context

Add the information that changes how the dimensions are interpreted:

  • Framed, semi-frameless or frameless construction.
  • Fixed panel, hinged door, sliding door, in-line arrangement, corner enclosure or angled return.
  • Number and approximate position of panels and doors.
  • Intended finished height.
  • Known profile, channel, clamp, hinge and handle type.
  • Whether an existing frame, channel or hardware will be retained.
  • Any step, nib, wall return, unusual angle or tile irregularity.

For an angled layout, document each angle and ask whether the supplier wants a paper template. A two-dimensional width alone cannot describe a splayed or non-square enclosure.

8. Recheck that the measurements reconcile

Take a second pass from the same reference faces. Compare the three widths and the side-to-side heights. Confirm that the sketch labels match the readings and that all units are consistent. If the bottom is narrower than the top, state that explicitly; do not average the figures into a fictitious rectangular opening.

Where a reading changes substantially over a short distance, measure additional points and note the transition. A supplier can often design around a predictable taper, but cannot do so reliably when the only submitted value is one midpoint measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Ask the supplier which dimensions to submit

Send the supplier the opening dimensions, the sketch and the plumb, level and flatness notes. Ask this direct question: “Do you want the finished opening size, or the finished glass size?” Unless the product instructions give you a specific calculation, do not deduct a profile width, hinge clearance or seal allowance yourself.

Ask the supplier to confirm:

  • The model’s allowable opening range and adjustment allowance.
  • Any required deduction from the opening for channels, profiles, clamps or hardware.
  • The minimum and maximum finished height.
  • Whether the stated tolerance applies to each wall, the total opening or a particular component.
  • Whether the existing frame or hardware can be retained.

How to document your readings

A simple schedule keeps the information usable for a quotation and for installation. Use the supplier’s preferred unit and retain the original tape readings.

Item What to record Why it matters
Bottom width Finished surface to finished surface at the curb or threshold Shows the base opening and any tray or curb taper
Middle width Finished surface to finished surface at the midpoint Reveals whether the walls remain parallel
Top width Finished surface to finished surface near the planned top Shows convergence, divergence or a bowed wall
Left height Finished datum to the desired top at the left side Accounts for a sloping base or uneven wall
Right height Finished datum to the desired top at the right side Allows the supplier to set the top line correctly
Centre height Finished datum to the desired top at the centre, where relevant Identifies a sag or irregular top condition
Wall plumb Amount and direction of vertical deviation for each receiving wall Influences profiles, seals, hinges and door alignment
Base level Amount and direction of slope or twist Influences seals, water management and panel setting

Opening size is not finished glass size

The most common ordering error is to measure the opening correctly and then order glass at that exact size. A door or panel may need space for a wall channel, a U-profile, clamps, hinges, seals, a gap at the closing edge and a clearance from the tray. The supplier may calculate those deductions from your opening dimensions, or the selected product may specify a different ordering convention.

Never transfer a deduction from one screen to another. A fixed panel, a hinged in-line door and a corner enclosure distribute clearances differently. Even two products with the same nominal opening can use different glass thicknesses and hardware. The safe handoff is: “These are my finished opening readings; please provide the required glass dimensions for this exact model and layout.”

Installation types and what to compare

Installation type Measurement questions Replacement concern
Framed door What is the model’s opening range, and which profile surfaces define the width? Can the existing frame be reused, and are its hinges, seals and glass thickness compatible?
Frameless hinged door Where will hinges and clamps sit, and how much plumb variation can they accommodate? Small errors are more visible; hardware locations and finished glass dimensions must be confirmed by the supplier.
Fixed panel Which edges use a channel or clamps, and what clearances are required? A panel may fit a different way from a door even at the same opening width.
In-line enclosure Are the door and adjacent panel on one straight line, and are the top, middle and bottom widths consistent? Any bow or taper can affect the meeting line and seal between door and panel.
Corner enclosure What are both leg widths, the corner angle and the tray dimensions? A deduction or adjustment for one corner layout cannot be generalized to another.

The National Glass Association distinguishes out-of-plumb walls from out-of-level horizontal planes and notes that flatness and irregularities can affect design or hardware. That distinction is useful when writing your notes: “wall out of plumb” and “base out of level” describe different problems and may require different remedies.

What to do with an irregular opening

Widths differ from bottom to top

Submit all readings and identify the direction of change. A supplier may use an adjustable profile, a tapered cut, a scribe, a wider seal or a different layout. Do not average the three widths unless the supplier explicitly requests an average for a particular model.

One wall is out of plumb

State the measured deviation and whether the top leans into or away from the shower. Ask whether the proposed profile or hinge system can accommodate the full variation. If it cannot, the installer may need to correct the wall or select another configuration before glass is fabricated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The curb or tray is out of level

Record the slope and check whether it is a deliberate drainage fall or an unintended defect. The supplier can then account for the condition in the panel and seal design. Do not assume a level top edge will sit correctly on a sloping base.

The surface is wavy or has a local obstruction

Mark the location and height of the obstruction on the sketch, and provide a photograph with a ruler or level for scale. A single overall width will not show a tile lippage, raised trim or bowed wall that interferes with a channel.

The opening is angled

Record each leg, the angle between them and the position of any return panel. Where the supplier requests it, make a paper pattern of the footprint. An angled enclosure needs more than a front-elevation width and height.

Replacement-frame checks before you order

If you plan to keep the existing frame, photograph every connection and locate the original model number. Measure the visible frame opening, but do not treat it as proof that another brand’s leaf will fit. Check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Glass thickness and whether the replacement uses the same thickness.
  • Hinge type, hinge position and maximum door weight.
  • Seal profile and the way the door closes against the jamb.
  • Frame channel dimensions and screw locations.
  • Door swing, handle clearance and the direction of opening.
  • Whether the old frame is square, plumb and firmly attached.

Give this information to the supplier and obtain written confirmation of compatibility. If the supplier cannot identify the retained system, a complete replacement enclosure may be safer than trying to match a glass leaf to an unknown frame.

Common mistakes that cause failed orders

  • Measuring before tile is installed: the finished opening becomes smaller or shifts when tile and adhesive are added.
  • Taking one width: a single midpoint value hides taper, bow and non-parallel walls.
  • Using the opening as the glass size: hardware and clearance deductions are product-specific.
  • Ignoring plumb and level: a nominally correct width can still produce a binding door, uneven gap or poor seal.
  • Mixing units: write inches or millimetres beside every reading and use one unit in the order form.
  • Applying a remembered deduction: figures such as 20 mm are tied to particular products and layouts.
  • Assuming a tolerance is universal: a manufacturer’s adjustment range applies only to the products and conditions it describes.
  • Leaving the datum unstated: “height 1900 mm” is incomplete unless the supplier knows where that measurement starts.
  • Assuming another brand fits the old frame: dimensions alone do not establish hinge, seal or glass compatibility.

Supplier handoff checklist

Send one package containing:

  1. A labelled sketch viewed from outside the shower.
  2. Bottom, middle and top opening widths.
  3. Left and right heights, plus a centre height where relevant.
  4. The height datum and intended finished screen height.
  5. Wall plumb readings with direction of deviation.
  6. Curb, tray or threshold level readings and any twist or high spot.
  7. Angles, returns, nibs, trim, obstructions and photographs.
  8. The proposed installation type and panel-door arrangement.
  9. The existing model and frame details if anything will be retained.
  10. A written request for the supplier’s finished glass dimensions, deductions, adjustment range and compatibility confirmation.

Keep the original notes and a copy of the supplier’s final drawing. Before fabrication, compare the drawing with the finished opening one more time. If any wall, tile, tray or frame has changed since the first measurement, stop and send updated readings rather than relying on the earlier order.
