How to Measure an Appliance Opening Before Delivery

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure two things before an appliance arrives: the opening where it will be installed and the entire route from the unloading point to that opening. Record the tightest height, width and depth at every constrained point, then compare those figures with the exact model’s product specifications, installation manual and packaged dimensions. Also verify door swing, ventilation, hookups and the delivery provider’s handling rules. An appliance can fit the cabinet opening and still fail at a doorway, stair turn or hinge-side clearance.

Why the opening measurement is only half the job

An appliance has to pass through the home before it can occupy its final space. A refrigerator, washer, dryer, range or dishwasher may match the nominal width of a cabinet opening yet be stopped by a front door, interior trim, a hallway turn, stair rail or a protruding handle. Packaging can make the load larger still.

Use two separate checks:

  • Installation-space check: Measure the finished opening and the room around it. Confirm the appliance’s overall dimensions, required cutout, ventilation or air clearances, door-opening space and connection locations.
  • Delivery-route check: Measure every likely pinch point from the unloading area to the final position. Check the packaged appliance if it will travel boxed.

Use the exact model’s documentation for the final decision. Manufacturer examples are not universal building codes or universal delivery rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to gather before measuring

  • A rigid tape measure long enough for the room and route.
  • A notebook, phone note or printed worksheet for recording each measurement and its location.
  • The exact model number, product page and installation instructions.
  • Packaged dimensions, if the retailer or manufacturer lists them.
  • A flashlight for checking behind cabinets, under counters and along stairs.
  • Painter’s tape or removable labels to mark measured pinch points.

Measure in the same units used by the appliance documentation. If you switch between inches and centimetres, write both values and identify which is the converted figure. Do not round a tight measurement upward.

CRAFTSMAN 25-Ft Tape Measure with Fraction Marketing, Retractable, Manual-Locking Blade (CMHT37443S)
  • 13 ft. Of reach*: allows for easy measurements when working alone (*based on maximum extension of average professional user)
  • Compact size: easy to grip and store in any tool belt
  • Easy grip design: extensive rubber overmold provides a comfortable grip and impact resistance
  • Easy read fractions: fractions printed on the blade in alternating colors and heights for quick, easy measurements
  • Includes: (1) CMHT37443S Tape Measure

Step 1: Measure the installation opening

Measure the opening’s height, width and depth with all permanent trim, molding, baseboards, flooring and countertop overhangs in place. Measure more than once and at more than one point. Uneven walls, floors and cabinets can make the opening wider at one end than the other; the narrowest usable measurement controls.

Width

Measure from the left obstruction to the right obstruction at the front, middle and back of the opening where you can reach. For a cabinet opening, include side panels, filler strips, wall surfaces and trim. Record the smallest result. If a door, drawer or hinge projects into the space, measure the clear opening with that obstruction included.

Height

Measure from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction at the left, centre and right. Include a raised threshold, flooring transition, countertop underside, cabinet rail or ceiling trim. A sloping floor or sagging shelf can reduce clearance at one point, so use the lowest measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Depth

Measure from the front reference plane to the rear obstruction. Note whether the measurement ends at the wall, a plumbing box, an electrical receptacle, a gas fitting or another object that occupies usable depth. A product may fit by its cabinet depth but not when hoses, cords, valves or a rear vent are connected.

Irregular or constrained openings

Measure narrow sections at their narrowest point rather than relying on the broad opening. Check baseboards, crown molding, side returns, shelves, handles and wall corners. GE Appliances’ measuring guidance specifically advises checking these details and its article uses the reminder “Always measure twice!” Treat that as a practical instruction: repeat the measurement after writing it down and resolve any discrepancy before ordering.

Opening record

Location Height Width Depth Limiting obstruction
Front of opening Record the tightest value Record the tightest value Record the usable depth Trim, wall or cabinet edge
Middle of opening Record the tightest value Record the tightest value Record the usable depth Uneven wall, shelf or fitting
Back of opening Record the tightest value Record the tightest value Record the usable depth Outlet, valve, pipe or rear wall

The table is a worksheet, not a substitute for the model’s specified cutout. Keep the original measurements and the model requirements side by side.

Step 2: Check door swing, hinges and operating clearance

An appliance can physically enter an opening and still be unusable if its door cannot open far enough. Check the space in front of the appliance and beside the hinge side. Look for an adjacent wall, cabinet, island, radiator, doorway or other appliance that could stop the door.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the model’s clearance diagram

Find the exact model’s door-swing, hinge-side and ventilation diagram in its product specifications or installation instructions. GE Appliances directs buyers to those documents for model-specific allowances. Refrigerator guidance from LG and Frigidaire also stresses that door-opening space depends on the model.

Check both closed and open positions

  • Measure the opening with the door closed so the cabinet can be positioned.
  • Measure the projected door and handle with the door open to the angle shown in the manual.
  • Check whether drawers, crispers, racks or shelves need additional opening distance.
  • Confirm that the hinge side has the required clearance from a wall or cabinet.

Frigidaire’s current refrigerator delivery guide gives an example of allowing 3 to 4 inches of additional width for adjacent walls or cabinets so refrigerator doors can open, depending on the model. That figure is an example, not a universal refrigerator requirement. Whirlpool’s US delivery guidance gives a different example—1/2 inch on each side of a refrigerator for venting. Use the exact model diagram when these examples differ.

Step 3: Measure the complete delivery route

Start at the place where the delivery team will unload and physically walk to the final installation location. Measure every point where the appliance or its package could touch a boundary. Do not stop after checking the front door.

List every route segment

  1. Unloading area, driveway, porch or loading dock.
  2. Exterior entrance and threshold.
  3. Interior doors and door frames.
  4. Hallways and corners.
  5. Stairs, landings and stair rails.
  6. Tight turns into the kitchen, laundry room or utility area.
  7. The final approach to the opening.

At each segment, measure clear width and clear height. For a turn, measure the usable space before and after the corner and note the angle, not just the straight-line width. A route that is wide enough in a straight hallway may not provide enough turning room.

Inspect obstructions

Look for door handles, latches, closers, trim, wall-mounted shelves, pictures, handrails, light fixtures, exposed pipes and furniture. Identify anything that can be removed safely and anything that cannot. Clear movable objects before delivery, but do not remove a door, hinge or railing unless the delivery provider has agreed to that plan.

Measure the package, not only the appliance

Product dimensions and packaged dimensions may differ. If the appliance will travel in its carton, use the packaged width, height and depth for the route check. Ask whether the delivery crew will remove packaging before a narrow passage and how the appliance will be protected during that move.

LG USA Support’s refrigerator checklist, published February 10, 2026, recommends 5 to 10 cm (1.9 to 3.9 inches) of space between the packaged product and the delivery path as a safe-moving recommendation. The same guidance notes that its general checklist can differ from a particular model, so use the model’s instructions and the provider’s handling plan for the final assessment.

Route measurement log

Route point Clear width Clear height What could interfere Action before delivery
Exterior entrance Measure at the narrowest frame point Measure below the lowest header or fixture Threshold, storm door, handle Confirm door can open fully; remove movable items
Interior doorway Measure with the door open as far as it will go Measure inside the frame Hinges, latch, trim Ask provider about door or hinge removal
Hallway or turn Measure both legs of the turn Check ceiling and light fixtures Corner trim, furniture, wall objects Clear furniture and verify turning plan
Stairs and landing Measure stair width and landing Check rail and overhead clearance Handrail, newel post, low ceiling Confirm provider’s safe-carry requirements
Final approach Measure the opening and approach together Check countertop or cabinet height Adjacent cabinets, wall, flooring lip Protect surfaces and verify installation space

Step 4: Compare your measurements with the exact model

Open the product specifications and installation manual for the model you intend to buy. Compare more than the headline width. A useful comparison records the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison item What to record Why it matters
Overall product dimensions Height, width and depth Determines whether the appliance can occupy the space
Required cutout Minimum and any stated installation dimensions The cabinet opening may need to be larger than the product body
Ventilation or air clearance Side, rear, top or other specified gaps Cooling and safe operation can require space beyond the body dimensions
Door swing and hinge clearance Opening angle, hinge-side allowance and adjacent-wall requirements Determines whether the door and drawers can operate
Packaged dimensions Width, height and depth in shipping configuration Controls route fit while boxed
Utility requirements Outlet, water, gas, vent, shutoff and installation hardware Physical fit does not prove installation readiness

Do not infer a required clearance from another model or another manufacturer. Even appliances with the same nominal width can use different hinge designs, ventilation paths, rear connections and door-swing envelopes.

Manufacturer examples: useful numbers with narrow scope

The following figures come from named manufacturer delivery or installation guidance. They illustrate why the exact manual matters; they are not a single industry standard.

Figure Scope and qualification
1 inch of side clearance and 1 inch between a washer and dryer; 6 inches behind laundry appliances for hoses and venting Whirlpool’s current US delivery and installation guidance. Confirm the specific appliance manual and delivery requirements.
1/2 inch on each side of a refrigerator for venting Whirlpool’s current US delivery and installation guidance. This is Whirlpool’s example, not a universal refrigerator rule.
3 to 4 inches of additional width for adjacent walls or cabinets Frigidaire’s current refrigerator delivery guide, with the allowance varying by model to permit door opening.
At least 3 feet of unobstructed path width from the unloading area to the delivery location Samsung US delivery instructions. This service requirement should not be generalized to every provider or product.
5 to 10 cm (1.9 to 3.9 inches) between the packaged product and the delivery path LG USA Support refrigerator checklist published February 10, 2026. It is a safe-moving recommendation and may differ for a particular model.

These are manufacturer instructions, not independent statistics or guaranteed outcomes. If your delivery provider gives a stricter route requirement, follow the stricter requirement or resolve the conflict before scheduling delivery.

Step 5: Confirm utilities and installation readiness

A successful route does not guarantee that the installer can connect the appliance. Check the exact installation instructions for the services your model needs.

Electrical

Confirm the required outlet location and electrical specification in the manual. Check whether the plug can reach without an extension cord and whether the outlet is blocked by the appliance or a nearby fitting. Do not treat a convenient-looking receptacle as suitable without verifying the model’s requirements.

Water

Refrigerators, washing machines and other water-connected appliances may need a compatible supply, shutoff valve, hose route and leak-safe access. Frigidaire’s refrigerator guide, for example, calls out water-line requirements. Verify the exact connection size and location rather than assuming an existing line will work.

Gas

For a gas appliance, check the specified gas connection, shutoff access and installation method in the manual and with the provider. If the service requires licensed work in your area, arrange it before delivery.

Venting

Dryers and other vented appliances need a suitable vent route and space for the hose. Whirlpool’s US laundry guidance uses 6 inches behind laundry appliances as an example for hoses and venting. Confirm the model’s actual rear clearance and vent configuration before positioning the appliance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installation hardware and service limits

Ask whether the installer supplies hoses, cords, anti-tip hardware, water-line kits or other parts, and whether those items are included in the delivery service. GE Appliances’ delivery and installation information directs customers to model-specific requirements. The retailer or delivery provider should also explain service-area limits, stairs, door removal and packaging removal before the appointment.

Special checks by appliance type

Refrigerators

Prioritize hinge-side clearance, door swing, adjacent-wall spacing, rear ventilation and water-line access. Check whether both doors can open far enough to remove shelves or drawers. Measure the packaged refrigerator for every route point, then compare the final position with the model’s ventilation diagram.

Washers and dryers

Measure the pair as a system if they will sit side by side or be stacked. Include hose bends, drain access, power cords and dryer vent space. Whirlpool’s US guidance gives examples of 1 inch at the sides and between a washer and dryer and 6 inches behind laundry appliances, but your model’s manual controls.

Dishwashers

Measure the cabinet opening at several points and check the floor height, countertop underside, door projection and water, drain and electrical routes. Confirm that the door can open without striking an opposing cabinet or island. Use the installation manual for cutout and connection details.

Ranges and cooktops

Check the opening width, counter height, nearby wall or cabinet clearance, power or gas connection and any required anti-tip or ventilation equipment. The route still needs to accommodate the packaged appliance, including protruding controls or protective corners.

These type-specific checks do not replace the exact model’s diagrams. They identify the dimensions most likely to become limiting for that category.

When the measurements do not fit

Stop and resolve the mismatch before delivery. Do not assume that a crew can force an appliance through or trim a cabinet on arrival.

  1. Confirm the numbers. Re-measure the limiting point, identify what was included, and compare product versus packaged dimensions.
  2. Check the documentation. Look for a model-specific clearance, hinge option, reversible door instruction or alternate installation configuration.
  3. Ask about the route plan. The provider may allow packaging removal, controlled door removal or another approved handling method. Get the answer in writing if possible.
  4. Remove only safe, approved obstructions. Clear furniture and movable objects. Do not alter structural trim, plumbing, electrical equipment or a door without qualified advice.
  5. Choose a different model or installation position. Compare actual dimensions, cutout, packaged size, door clearance and utility requirements rather than choosing by nominal width alone.
  6. Reschedule if needed. A failed delivery can create additional handling charges, damage risk or return complications.

Questions to ask the retailer or delivery provider

  • Will the appliance travel boxed, partially unboxed or fully unboxed?
  • What packaged dimensions and weight should I use for the route check?
  • What is the provider’s minimum doorway, hallway or unobstructed-path requirement?
  • Will the crew remove and reinstall a door, hinge or handle, and is that service included?
  • Are stairs, tight turns, long carries or elevators subject to special rules?
  • Which hoses, cords, vent parts or water-line kits are included?
  • What utilities must be installed and accessible before arrival?
  • Will the crew connect gas, water, venting and electrical services, or must another installer do that work?
  • What happens if the appliance cannot safely pass the route?

Samsung’s US instructions, for example, specify an unobstructed path of at least 3 feet from the unloading area to the delivery location. Treat that as Samsung’s service requirement, not as a promise that every delivery company uses the same threshold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Day-before delivery checklist

  • Recheck the tightest opening measurement against the exact model’s required cutout.
  • Recheck every route pinch point using packaged dimensions if applicable.
  • Confirm door swing, hinge-side clearance and ventilation space.
  • Remove furniture, rugs and other movable obstructions from the route.
  • Protect floors, walls and corners according to the provider’s instructions.
  • Verify that required outlets, shutoff valves, water lines, gas connections and vents are installed and reachable.
  • Confirm the delivery appointment, service scope and any approved door or packaging plan.
  • Keep the model number, manual and your measurement log available for the crew.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Measuring only the front of the cabinet

Problem: The front width looks adequate, but the back or a side return is tighter.

Fix: Measure front, middle and back, then use the smallest value.

Using nominal product dimensions alone

Problem: The appliance body fits on paper, but required ventilation, hinge or connection space does not.

Fix: Compare the exact model’s cutout, air clearances, door diagram and utility requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring packaging

Problem: The unboxed unit fits the hallway, but the carton cannot clear a doorway or turn.

Fix: Use the model’s door-swing diagram and measure the open position.

Assuming a connection is ready

Problem: The appliance fits but cannot be safely connected because the outlet, valve, vent or shutoff is missing or inaccessible.

Fix: Confirm utility and service requirements before scheduling delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical pass/fail decision

Mark the installation as ready only when all five conditions are true:

  1. The tightest opening measurements meet the model’s required dimensions.
  2. The appliance’s door, hinge and ventilation clearances are available.
  3. The packaged appliance can pass every measured route point, or the provider has approved an alternative handling plan.
  4. Required utilities and installation hardware are present and accessible.
  5. The delivery provider has confirmed its route, packaging and service requirements.

If any condition is unresolved, pause the delivery appointment or obtain a documented answer. Measuring twice is faster and less expensive than discovering a mismatch after the appliance arrives.
