Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesManage a shared farm as a working site with controlled visitor access. Give every visitor a known arrival point, parking area and walking route; keep active machinery, livestock, loading and delivery areas restricted; and preserve an unobstructed route for emergency vehicles. Put these arrangements on a simple site plan, explain them at the entrance, and change them when farm work, weather or an event changes the risks.
There is no universal parking capacity, road width, sign format or event threshold for every farm. Obligations depend on the country, local authority, activity, livestock, public rights of way and whether an event needs a permit. The examples below distinguish official requirements from practical controls that should be checked with the relevant planning, highway, workplace-safety and animal-health authorities.

Build one access plan before opening the site
Start with a scaled sketch or aerial image and mark the public-road entrance, visitor arrival point, parking, pedestrian route, farm-vehicle routes, livestock accommodation and fields, feed and manure areas, loading zones, public rights of way, gates, buildings, assembly points and emergency access. British Columbia farm-access guidance recommends defining visitor practices, restricted areas, parking or loading areas and traffic patterns; use those categories as the minimum content of your plan. Province of British Columbia farm-access guidance
Walk the proposed route at the busiest realistic time, not just when the farm is quiet. Check whether a tractor turning, a livestock movement, a delivery truck or a queue at the gate would force people into a vehicle path. Mark alternative routes for wet weather, harvest, spraying, construction and animal handling. Give each route an owner: a farm manager controls work areas, an event organiser controls attendee movement, and a named person monitors the entrance and parking during public periods.

| Plan element | What to show | Operating decision |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Which driveway visitors use and where they stop first | Prevent visitors from entering a yard or field by mistake |
| Parking | Spaces, turning area, overflow and accessible route | Keep vehicles off livestock ground and farm-vehicle lanes where feasible |
| Pedestrian movement | Walking line, crossings, gates and changes in level | Use a marked route that does not rely on people guessing |
| Restricted areas | Machinery yards, workshops, livestock rooms, chemical stores and loading points | Use signs, barriers, secured doors or a staff escort as appropriate |
| Emergency access | Gate widths, approach roads, turning space and alternative access | Keep the route usable while vehicles are parked and queues form |
Give visitors a single, obvious destination
A visitor should be able to identify the correct entrance from the public road, stop without blocking the gate and see where to report arrival. If more than one driveway exists, close or sign the unused approaches during the visitor period. Put directional signs before a decision point, not after a visitor has already entered a working yard. At a temporary event, include the same information in the invitation or ticket instructions so drivers arrive expecting the correct route.
Identify controls that must not be compromised
List the gates, roads and yards that must remain clear for fire, ambulance, veterinary or farm use. The England and Wales Countryside Code tells visitors, “Always leave access for emergency vehicles.” UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, The Countryside Code Treat that as a practical operating rule even where a different local code applies.
Separate public movement from farm work
Visitors and farm operations can share land, but they should not share the same moving-vehicle space unless the interaction is controlled. Keep the public route outside machinery yards, reversing areas, livestock handling pens, loading points and work zones wherever the layout permits. The land-manager version of the Countryside Code advises creating a clear crossing point or separating visitors from danger where vehicles regularly cross a public right of way. UK land-manager guidance
Recommended Free Tools
Use a controlled crossing where separation is impossible
Choose one visible crossing rather than allowing people to cross at several informal points. Keep sight lines open, slow vehicles before the crossing, and assign a marshal when a delivery, harvest operation or livestock movement creates an unusual hazard. Stop the farm task while a group crosses if the driver cannot see every person. Do not rely on visitors hearing a reversing alarm or understanding hand signals they have not been briefed on.
Brief everyone when routes change
Farm staff, contractors, volunteers and event organisers need the same current map. Tell them which gate is open, where visitors will walk, when deliveries arrive and which areas are temporarily closed. WorkSafe New Zealand’s guidance for farm visitors and events describes the farmer briefing organisers about route hazards and organisers communicating risks introduced by deliveries or event activity. Its examples include uneven or rutted surfaces, animals near routes, sprayed areas and trucks bringing equipment; use them as prompts, not as a universal legal checklist. WorkSafe New Zealand, Visitors and events on farms
Control public-right-of-way interactions
Where a public footpath, bridleway or road crosses the holding, do not quietly divert people through a more dangerous area. Check the applicable right-of-way rules, provide the agreed crossing or temporary control, and keep signs legible. Farm staff should not direct visitors toward livestock, machinery or a closed route merely to make an operation easier.

Choose parking that protects people, animals and biosecurity
Parking is both a traffic decision and an animal-health decision. Ontario livestock biosecurity guidance recommends parking away from farm-vehicle routes, feed and manure, using a visitor entry area, displaying biosecurity signs and keeping visitor records. Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness, Biosecurity fundamentals for visitors Keep unnecessary cars out of livestock areas and avoid making visitors walk through animal accommodation to reach the destination.

Use hard standing where available, with enough width for doors, pedestrians and emergency passage. Scottish Government visitor advice recommends hard standing rather than livestock fields and avoiding driving through fields that contain, or recently contained, stock where feasible. Scottish Government biosecurity advice If grass is the only option, assess rutting, mud, runoff, recovery time and whether vehicles could carry contamination between animal groups. Set a weather trigger for moving parking to an alternative area before the surface fails.
| Arrangement | Advantages | Controls and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Hard-standing visitor lot away from livestock | Predictable access, less rutting and easier separation from farm traffic | Still needs a pedestrian route, drainage check and clear emergency lane |
| Temporary grass parking | Can absorb a short peak when no paved area exists | Inspect weather, prevent mud-bound vehicles, avoid fields with current or recent stock where feasible |
| Parking at the entrance with farm shuttle | Keeps visitor cars out of the working area | Requires a safe loading point, accessible alternative and a controlled shuttle route |
| Shared yard parking | Convenient for a small number of known visitors | High conflict with reversing, deliveries, machinery and livestock; use only with active supervision |
Set footwear and vehicle rules
Tell visitors before arrival whether clean footwear, disposable overshoes, handwashing or a change of clothing is required. The UK government’s disease-prevention guidance recommends a visitor policy and records, hygiene and suitable protective footwear, while also advising that unnecessary people, equipment and vehicle movement in animal areas be restricted. UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, Disease prevention for livestock keepers Ask visitors to follow the farm’s instructions rather than assuming that a general sign is enough.
Use a visitor log when traceability matters
Record name or organisation, arrival and departure, areas visited and any required biosecurity declaration when the farm’s animal-health plan calls for it. Keep the record secure and retain it only for the period needed for operational or disease-control purposes. A log is not a substitute for controlling the route; it gives the farm a way to contact people if an animal-health issue or route incident is later identified.
Make signs, barriers and check-in work together
Signs should answer three questions at the point a visitor needs the answer: Where do I go? Where may I park or walk? What must I not enter or do? Place “visitor parking,” “report here,” “no public access,” speed or crossing messages before the relevant turn. Use consistent colours and wording, keep signs visible in low light and inspect them after wind, harvest or construction changes the layout.
British Columbia guidance specifically identifies restricted-access signs or secured doors where needed, and Ontario guidance supports visible biosecurity signs at livestock facilities. Signs communicate the plan; they do not by themselves prevent a person from entering a dangerous yard. Add a gate, barrier, locked door, attendant or escort where the consequence of entry is serious.

Set an arrival script
At check-in, explain the route, parking limit, footwear or hygiene requirement, livestock and machinery boundaries, gate etiquette and what to do if a vehicle or animal movement is underway. Ask visitors to leave gates as they found them unless a named farm worker instructs otherwise. For contractors, include the delivery point, reversing rule, contact person and time window in the booking confirmation.
Use a repeatable daily operating procedure
- Inspect before opening. Walk the visitor route, parking surface, crossings, gates and emergency approach. Remove obstacles, check signs and confirm that overnight weather has not created standing water, ice, mud or fallen branches.
- Confirm the work plan. Ask the farm team about machinery movements, spraying, livestock gathering, deliveries, maintenance, construction and any route that will be closed. Mark the change on the entrance map.
- Set the physical layout. Position barriers or temporary markers so vehicles cannot drift into pedestrian space. Keep the emergency lane and turning areas clear. Temporary cones or attendants can implement an approved layout, but they do not replace a route decision or local requirement.
- Brief staff and organisers. Name the person responsible for the gate, parking and incident escalation. Give everyone the same instructions and a way to contact the farm manager.
- Receive and direct visitors. Stop vehicles at the designated arrival point, provide the route and record visitors when required. Do not wave cars through an active yard simply because the parking area is full.
- Monitor conflicts. Pause visitor movement when livestock, machinery or a delivery uses the crossing. Move or close a route if visibility, weather or surface conditions make the original plan unsafe.
- Close and reset. Count vehicles or confirm the lot is empty, remove temporary controls only when farm staff agree, check gates and record incidents, near misses, complaints and changes needed for the next period.
Plan differently for events and peak visitor periods
Estimate arrival numbers by time, vehicle type and duration rather than relying only on a total attendance figure. Consider whether cars could queue onto a public road, block a farm gate, prevent an emergency vehicle from passing or interfere with normal deliveries. The reviewed official sources do not establish a universal attendance threshold; the trigger for a formal plan is jurisdiction- and site-specific.
Check permits and traffic-plan requirements
Fairfax County, Virginia, agritourism administrative-permit guidance requires an applicable application to include a transportation management and parking plan showing adequate on-site parking, attendee entry and exit, and how traffic stacking on the public right of way will be prevented. Fairfax County Agritourism (Administrative Permit) This requirement applies to that county’s permit process, not to every farm.

New Jersey’s on-farm direct-marketing rule has event-management provisions for covered activities where a significant traffic increase is likely to interfere with ordinary or emergency traffic. The listed plan topics include safe ingress and egress, pedestrian and vehicle flow, attendants or signs, parking direction, temporary parking, overflow parking and emergency access. The rule provides for a copy to be sent to the municipal clerk at least 30 days in advance as advisory notice. That 30-day timing and the rule’s scope are specific to the cited New Jersey provision; confirm whether it covers your activity with the municipality. New Jersey State Agriculture Development Committee, AMP for On-Farm Direct Marketing Facilities, Activities, and Events
Stage setup and deliveries before attendees arrive
Give suppliers a delivery window, a route and a waiting location that does not occupy visitor parking or the emergency lane. Keep trucks, trailers and temporary structures out of the pedestrian path. Walk the setup route with the organiser and identify ruts, animals, sprayed ground, overhead hazards and reversing points. If the event layout changes, update the entrance sign and brief marshals before opening.
Provide overflow without exporting the problem
Define the overflow area in advance, including who opens it, how drivers are directed there and how pedestrians reach the event safely. Do not use a public verge, neighbouring field or road shoulder without the landowner and authority arrangements that apply. If the overflow fills, use a controlled hold or stop admission rather than allowing vehicles to queue across a gate or public road.

Coordinate farm work, contractors and deliveries
Keep a daily coordination board or digital message that shows visitor periods, machinery tasks, livestock movements, deliveries and route closures. A contractor who has never seen the farm needs a short induction covering speed, reversing, radio or telephone contact, parking, gates, overhead or underground hazards and the location of people on foot.
Schedule high-conflict work outside visitor peaks when possible. If it cannot move, create a physical separation and appoint a spotter for the crossing or reversing movement. Stop a task when the driver, operator or marshal loses sight of a person. The UK Health and Safety Executive’s “Traffic management on site” page is written for construction sites, not farms; its basic principles of planning vehicle routes, separating pedestrians and vehicles and managing reversing can be adapted as general practice, but it is not farm-specific law. UK Health and Safety Executive, Traffic management on site
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect emergency access and usable routes
Measure the actual approach that an emergency vehicle would use, including gate openings, bends, gradients, surface strength and turning space. Keep parked cars, queues, hay bales, equipment and event structures outside that corridor. Tell the gate attendant who has authority to move vehicles and where keys are kept if a locked gate forms part of the plan.
Design the public route for the people you have invited. Check slopes, ruts, loose stone, lighting, gate latches and the width available for mobility aids or pushchairs. Provide an accessible alternative when the main route crosses a field or livestock area, and describe its surface and distance honestly in advance. Accessibility does not justify sending visitors through an active work area; it requires a safer route or a different visitor arrangement.

| Place or authority | What the cited guidance covers | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| England and Wales | The Countryside Code tells visitors not to block gateways or driveways, to leave emergency access, follow marked paths and signs, and avoid interfering with machinery or livestock. Land-manager advice addresses rights-of-way crossings and machinery. | Use it for visitor instructions and route design; verify local rights-of-way and event rules. |
| British Columbia | Farm-access good practice covers limited access, restricted-area controls, visitor practices, designated parking or loading and traffic patterns. | Use its categories to build an access plan; it is not a universal code for other jurisdictions. |
| Ontario | Livestock visitor biosecurity guidance covers parking away from farm traffic, feed and manure, visitor entry areas, visible signs and visitor records. | Apply where relevant to livestock biosecurity and adapt to the farm’s animal-health plan. |
| Scotland | Visitor biosecurity advice favours hard standing over livestock fields and avoiding fields that contain or recently contained stock where feasible. | Use it as a surface and vehicle-movement control, subject to local requirements. |
| New Zealand | WorkSafe explains farmer and event-organiser coordination under New Zealand’s health-and-safety framework. | Use its hazard-briefing examples only within the applicable legal context. |
| New Jersey | On-farm direct-marketing rules address event plans where increased traffic may interfere with normal or emergency traffic. | Check whether the activity is covered and follow the municipality’s process. |
| Fairfax County, Virginia | Agritourism administrative-permit guidance calls for a transportation and parking plan for applicable applications. | Follow the county permit instructions when they apply. |

Fix common failure modes
Cars block the only farm gate
Move the arrival stop away from the gate, mark a no-parking buffer and assign someone to redirect drivers before the first vehicle parks. If the gate is needed for emergency or livestock access, never treat the buffer as overflow.

Visitors follow farm tracks into livestock areas
Close the wrong turn with a barrier or secured gate, place the directional sign before the junction and make the correct route visible from the entrance. Add an attendant during busy periods instead of adding more small signs that compete for attention.
Mud makes the planned lot unusable
Activate the preselected hard-standing or shuttle arrangement before vehicles become stuck. Record the weather trigger and communicate the change through the event message, entrance sign and staff briefing.
A delivery arrives during a visitor movement
Hold the delivery at a safe waiting point, stop pedestrians at the crossing and release one movement at a time. Reschedule recurring deliveries outside public hours if the conflict is predictable.
A sign is present but people still enter
Inspect its position, wording, contrast and line of sight. Where entry would expose people to serious harm, add a physical restriction or personal control; signage alone is not proof that access is managed.
A visitor opens or leaves a gate incorrectly
Explain the gate rule at check-in, label the gate with the required position and have staff supervise gates near livestock. Include the incident in the next briefing rather than assuming every visitor understands farm practice.
Review the plan and keep evidence of changes
After each busy period, record vehicle queues, route conflicts, near misses, surface failures, animal-health concerns, complaints and accessibility problems. Note the date, weather, visitor volume, farm tasks underway and the corrective action. Update the map when a gate, building, field use or public-right-of-way condition changes.
Review the arrangement before the next seasonal peak, event or construction phase with the farm operator, relevant contractors and event organiser. Where a permit, traffic notice, animal-health plan or local consultation applies, retain the version of the plan submitted or agreed and check whether the authority requires a new submission after a material change.
