How to Maintain a Nitrogen Generator and Its Air Compressor

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintain the nitrogen generator and the compressor as one system. Keep feed air at the pressure, flow, temperature, dew point and hydrocarbon conditions specified for the generator; service filters and condensate drains on the exact intervals in each equipment manual; inspect for leaks, abnormal noise and vibration; and verify nitrogen purity and output after service. A filter interval from another model is only a reference, not a safe schedule for your installation.

The procedure below gives a practical construction-site routine while identifying which intervals come from specific manufacturers. Your generator and compressor model numbers, operating hours, installed dryer and drain arrangement determine the final checklist.

Start by identifying the installed system

Before setting dates on a maintenance calendar, make an equipment register. Record the nitrogen generator make, model, serial number and technology; the compressor make, model, serial number and running hours; filter grades and part numbers; dryer type; receiver size; automatic and manual drains; pressure and flow settings; and the location of isolation valves. Photograph the air-treatment train and label the flow direction. This prevents a technician from ordering an element that fits a similar-looking housing but has the wrong grade.

Download the current operating and service manual for every component. The title of this article does not identify a particular machine, so no single calendar applies to all generators or compressors. Parker’s N2-120, N2-160 and N2-240 manual, for example, specifies one interval for its own filtration components, while an older Oxymat Nitromat manual gives different triggers. Use those figures as model-bounded examples only.

Information to put on the service sheet

  • Generator and compressor model and serial numbers.
  • Normal inlet pressure, flow, temperature and dew-point limits from the manuals.
  • Filter housing names, grades, element part numbers and installation dates.
  • Dryer settings, condensate-drain type and receiver operating pressure.
  • Normal nitrogen purity, product flow and outlet pressure readings.
  • Operating-hour meter readings and the date of the last service.
  • Isolation points, pressure-relief devices and the approved site lockout procedure.

Protect the generator with clean, dry feed air

The compressor is not merely an accessory. A change in compressor performance or in the air-treatment train can change nitrogen purity and production. Parker states that pressure or flow upsets—including compressor malfunctions and plumbing leaks—produce variations in outlet-gas purity. The same manual identifies inlet compressed-air temperature, dew point and hydrocarbon changes as conditions that can affect performance. See the Parker N2-120/160/240 manual when checking the limits for those models.

Oxymat warns that water, oil, rust, scale and other carryover can damage filter elements or plug drains. Its manual also explains that filter elements are selected for the generator’s feed-air requirements. A generator that appears to have a nitrogen problem may therefore have a compressor, dryer, drain or pipework problem upstream.

Check the complete air path

  1. Compressor discharge: Check that discharge pressure and flow reach the generator’s specified range while the generator is producing gas, not just while the compressor is unloaded.
  2. Receiver and drains: Confirm that condensate is being removed and that automatic drains cycle. A full receiver or failed drain can send liquid downstream.
  3. Dryer: Verify that the dryer is operating at its intended pressure and temperature and that its drain is not blocked.
  4. Filters: Inspect differential-pressure indicators, bowls, housings and element condition. Replace elements at the installed manual’s interval or earlier if pressure drop or contamination requires it.
  5. Pipework and fittings: Look for audible leaks, damaged tubing, loose compression fittings and temporary construction connections that have not been capped or secured.
  6. Generator inlet: Confirm that the air entering the generator has the required pressure, flow, temperature, dew point and hydrocarbon condition.

Do not compensate for an out-of-specification air supply by changing generator settings at random. Find and correct the upstream cause, then allow the system to stabilize and check purity and flow again.

Use a model-specific maintenance calendar

The following schedules show how manufacturers express maintenance requirements. They are examples, not a universal nitrogen-generator standard. Where a manual provides both a calendar and an operating-hour trigger, service at whichever limit is reached first unless the manufacturer says otherwise.

  • Read compressor discharge pressure, receiver pressure and generator inlet pressure while the generator is on load.
  • Listen for new knocking, rattling, hissing or cycling changes and feel for abnormal vibration only where the site procedure permits safe observation.
  • Drain the receiver and each condensate trap, or confirm that automatic drains have discharged. Treat the condensate as potentially contaminated and follow the site’s disposal rules.
  • Inspect filter bowls for liquid, discoloration or visible debris. Never loosen a pressurized bowl.
  • Check the dryer status, dew-point indication and drain alarm, if fitted.
  • Walk the pipe run and mark any audible leak for repair during a controlled shutdown.
  • Check nitrogen purity and product flow against the normal values recorded for that installation.

A falling pressure at the generator inlet, longer compressor run time or a sudden rise in filter differential pressure is a reason to investigate immediately rather than wait for the next calendar service.

Monthly, quarterly and annual compressor work

Monthly work

For the NGP-1000D-M2 example, clean the compressor air filter monthly and test the safety-relief valve monthly. Follow the exact test and reset procedure in the compressor manual; do not lift a relief valve casually or defeat it to keep production running. Inspect the intake area for dust, concrete fines, insulation, standing water and blocked louvers, especially on construction sites where airborne debris changes quickly.

Quarterly work

Inspect every accessible connection for leakage and looseness. Check threaded joints, compression fittings, hoses, quick couplers, drain lines, gauges and valve stems. Repair leaks with the compressor isolated and depressurized according to the equipment procedure. A small leak can reduce available flow enough to disturb generator cycling even when the receiver pressure appears normal at no load.

Annual work

The General Air Products schedule calls for annual intake-filter replacement. Other compressors may specify a different interval, an operating-hour trigger or a pressure-drop criterion. Use the installed manual and the exact element specification. At the annual review, reconcile the compressor hours, receiver and drain condition, dryer service records, relief-valve test record and generator filter history.

Service the nitrogen generator safely

Compressed gas can release stored energy without warning. Parker’s maintenance instruction is explicit: “To avoid system damage and/or personal harm, isolate the Parker Nitrogen Generator from the compressed air supply and fully depressurize prior to performing any maintenance activities.” Read the official Parker manual and apply your site’s isolation, lockout and permit requirements.

  1. Plan the outage. Confirm the generator model, parts, tools, replacement seals and the approved shutdown sequence. Tell affected trades that nitrogen production will be unavailable.
  2. Stop production normally. Use the generator’s operating controls and allow its prescribed cycle or shutdown routine to finish.
  3. Isolate the air source. Close and secure the specified compressed-air isolation valve. Isolate electrical, pneumatic and other energy sources required by the equipment and site procedure.
  4. Verify zero pressure. Open only the designated depressurization point and wait until gauges show no pressure. Confirm that trapped sections, receiver connections and filter housings are also depressurized.
  5. Perform the model’s service procedure. Replace or inspect only the elements and seals identified in the manual. Keep open housings and tubing clean and capped.
  6. Reassemble and inspect. Check element orientation, O-rings, bowl threads, drain fittings and clamps. Do not substitute a filter grade because the dimensions look similar.
  7. Restore pressure gradually. Close drains and covers, remove tools, open isolation valves slowly and check every serviced joint for leaks.
  8. Verify operation. Allow the generator to reach its normal cycle, then record inlet conditions, product purity, flow and outlet pressure. Compare them with the installation’s baseline.

Do not generalize this sequence to equipment with a different pressure vessel, membrane arrangement or control system. The installed manual and the site’s energy-control procedure take precedence.

When removing an element, inspect the old media and housing for oil, water, rust or scale. Contamination is diagnostic information: repeated liquid or oil carryover points back to compressor lubrication, receiver drainage, dryer performance or upstream piping, not simply to a missed filter date.

Monitor purity, flow and inlet conditions after every service

Record readings before shutdown and after the generator has returned to a stable operating cycle. At minimum, capture:

  • Generator inlet pressure and flow.
  • Inlet compressed-air temperature and dew point, where instrumentation is installed.
  • Evidence of hydrocarbon or oil carryover and the condition of condensate.
  • Nitrogen purity, product flow and outlet pressure.
  • Compressor load/unload behavior, receiver pressure and unusual noise or vibration.
  • Filter differential-pressure readings and drain status.

Use the generator’s stated specifications and your recorded baseline to decide whether the result is acceptable. A purity change accompanied by a pressure or flow change should send the investigation upstream first. Parker specifically identifies compressor malfunctions and plumbing leaks as causes of outlet-purity variation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot by symptom instead of changing parts at random

Purity falls after a compressor or pipework change

  • Check generator inlet pressure and flow under load.
  • Inspect for leaks, closed valves, undersized temporary hoses or compressor malfunction.
  • Check inlet temperature, dew point and hydrocarbon carryover.
  • Confirm that filters and drains are correctly installed and not saturated.
  • Compare the result with the generator manual’s limits and contact the equipment service provider if the cause is not found.

Purity or flow declines gradually

  • Review filter age in both calendar time and operating hours.
  • Check differential pressure and inspect elements for water, oil, rust or scale.
  • Verify dryer operation and condensate removal.
  • Look for a slow leak at fittings, valves or flexible connections.
  • Confirm that compressor intake and discharge filters are clean and that the compressor is achieving its rated conditions.

Liquid appears in a filter bowl or drain stops working

  • Take the generator out of service if liquid can reach its inlet.
  • Isolate and depressurize before opening any bowl or drain assembly.
  • Repair or replace the drain, clear the blocked discharge in accordance with the manual and inspect downstream elements.
  • Find why condensate production or carryover increased before restarting.

The compressor becomes noisy or vibrates

  • Stop and escalate an unusual noise or vibration rather than treating it as normal cycling.
  • Check mounting, intake restriction, receiver pressure and operating condition using the compressor manual.
  • Do not continue running solely to maintain nitrogen production if the compressor may be damaged.

Make maintenance traceable

A service log turns a recurring checklist into useful evidence. For every inspection or part change, record the date, technician, equipment and serial number, operating hours, readings, work performed, filter grade and part number, drain and relief-valve results, leaks found, corrective action and post-service purity and flow. Attach photographs of damaged elements or contaminated bowls when they explain a failure.

Keep separate calendar and hour-meter triggers visible. For example, an Oxymat element specified for six months or 4,000 working hours must not be left in service because only three calendar months have passed if the hour limit has already been reached. Conversely, a Parker six-month recommendation for its named models should not be transferred to a different generator without that manufacturer’s approval.

When to call the manufacturer or a qualified service company

Escalate when the equipment manual is unavailable, the model or filter grade cannot be verified, a relief device fails its test, a pressure vessel or membrane housing is damaged, purity remains outside specification after the air supply is corrected, or repeated oil and water contamination returns after filter replacement. Provide the service provider with model and serial numbers, operating hours, recent readings, filter history and photographs. This information is more useful than ordering a generic “nitrogen-generator filter.”

For the Parker models covered by the 2022 manual, begin with the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. For an Oxymat installation, treat the 2014 manual copy as historical guidance and obtain the current official documentation before relying on an interval or service method.
