How to Lay Bricks: A Step-by-Step Guide to Building a Straight, Level Wall

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To build a straight, level brick wall, start with a level foundation, set accurate corner profiles and a tightly tensioned builders line, then lay each brick on a consistent mortar bed while checking level, plumb, square and alignment. Allow about 10–15 mm for mortar between bricks, inspect every course with a spirit level and straight-edge, and install brickforce wherever the design or specification requires it.

This method is suitable for basic wall-laying technique. Foundation depth, wall height, drainage, frost protection, structural reinforcement, property boundaries and permits depend on your site and jurisdiction; confirm those requirements with the applicable building code or a qualified mason or engineer before construction.

Decide whether the project is suitable for a DIY build

A short, non-load-bearing garden or boundary wall is a different risk from a retaining wall, structural wall, chimney, foundation wall or tall freestanding wall. The laying technique is similar, but the engineering requirements are not. Before ordering materials or excavating, establish the wall’s purpose, finished height, thickness, exposure to wind and water, and whether it supports anything above it.

Check the rules that apply to your site

  • Confirm planning, permit and property-line requirements with your local authority.
  • Determine the required footing width, depth, concrete strength, drainage and frost-depth protection from the applicable building code or a professional.
  • Obtain a structural design where the wall carries a building, resists soil, supports a gate or roof, or is unusually high or exposed.
  • Locate underground services before digging and arrange safe access for mixing, material storage and waste removal.

The basic sequence below does not establish a safe maximum height or replace a design for reinforcement, movement joints or drainage.

Tools and materials

Gather everything before mixing mortar. Stopping halfway through a course makes it harder to maintain a clean bond and consistent joints.

Item Purpose What to check before work
Square-nose spade Preparing the work area and handling material Blade and handle are sound; use it only for tasks it can safely handle
Tape measure Setting out wall length, offsets and course heights Readability and a locking mechanism that holds
Builders hawk Holding small amounts of mortar while laying Board is clean, rigid and comfortable to carry
Buckets Measuring, carrying water or mortar and cleaning Use separate clean containers for potable water and mortar
Hammer and brick bolster Making controlled brick cuts where the design permits Eye protection, an undamaged bolster and a stable cutting surface
Mortar trowel Spreading the bed and buttering brick ends A straight-edged blade and comfortable, secure handle
Spirit level Checking horizontal courses and vertical faces A readable vial, undamaged body and a length that bridges the brick face
Builders string line Providing a straight reference for each course High visibility, enough length and a reliable way to tension it
Steel square Checking that corners and returns are at right angles Rigid legs that meet accurately without a gap
Profiles Holding the line at the wall’s corners and controlling height Both profiles are plumb, rigid and aligned with the wall path
Straight-edge Checking local flatness and course alignment Long enough to span several bricks and not bowed
Bricks, mortar materials and water Constructing the wall Correct type, quantity and approved mix for the exposure and intended use
Brickforce or specified reinforcement Reinforcing courses where the design calls for it Use only the size, spacing and corrosion protection specified for the wall

Wear gloves, eye protection and sturdy footwear. Mortar is abrasive and can irritate skin; wash it off rather than allowing it to dry on your hands or on exposed brick.

Set out the wall before mixing mortar

Verify the foundation

The concrete foundation must be level enough to give the first course a workable, even bed. Place a spirit level at several points along the foundation and across its width, not just at one end. If it is out of level, correct the condition using an approved method before bricklaying; do not try to hide a major error with an excessively thick first joint.

Mark the wall path and corners

  1. Measure the wall from the approved plan or set-out dimensions.
  2. Mark the outside faces and each corner, return or change of direction.
  3. Position profiles at the corners so they are stable and accurately aligned with the wall path.
  4. Use a steel square to verify each corner. Check the diagonal or another independent measurement when the layout has more than one corner so an error does not travel down the wall.
  5. Keep the profiles plumb. A leaning profile will make a correctly laid brick course appear wrong and will progressively distort the wall.

Dry-fit the first course

Place bricks without mortar along the marked line. Include the intended end conditions, corners and any planned openings. Leave the mortar allowance between units—PPC’s guide recommends adding 10–15 mm for mortar between bricks. Dry-fitting reveals whether a cut or adjustment is needed before the mortar sets and lets you avoid a narrow, weak-looking piece at a visible end.

Do not treat the dry fit as a substitute for the approved bond or structural details. Where the plan specifies a bond, pier, movement joint or reinforcement location, mark it now.

Mix mortar for consistent workability

Mix mortar according to the product instructions, project specification and local practice for the brick type and exposure. The correct result is workable enough to spread and hold a brick without slumping, but not so wet that it squeezes out of every joint or weakens the masonry. Keep batches consistent; changing the water content from one batch to the next makes joint color, strength and setting behavior uneven.

Prepare the work area

  • Use a stable mixing surface or approved mixer near, but not in, the access route.
  • Measure materials consistently rather than estimating each batch by eye.
  • Use clean water and clean tools.
  • Mix only an amount that can be placed within the product’s working time and the weather conditions.
  • Keep mortar off the visible faces of bricks; remove spills promptly with the trowel.

Joint thickness

PPC’s laying guide uses approximately 10–15 mm for the mortar allowance. North Carolina Department of Transportation’s 2012 Standard Specifications state that brick masonry joints must be at least 3/8 inch and no more than 5/8 inch (approximately 10–16 mm), with completely filled joints. The governing specification for your project takes precedence if it differs. A joint that varies widely from brick to brick will make the course wander and can create weak or porous areas.

Lay the first course step by step

The first course controls the geometry of every course above it. Spend more time here than on any later row.

  1. Set the reference line. Attach the builders line to the profiles at the intended face and height. Tension it enough to remain straight, but keep it clear of the bricks so a brick cannot push it out of position. PPC describes the builders line as a height guide for the brick courses.
  2. Spread the starting bed. Place a continuous mortar bed on the foundation, beginning at a corner. PPC’s guide calls for a bed about 10–15 mm thick. Keep the bed broad enough for the brick while avoiding large ridges or gaps.
  3. Place the first corner brick. Lower it onto the bed rather than sliding it along the foundation. Tap it gently with the trowel handle or another approved method until its top and face agree with the line and the intended height.
  4. Check in three directions. Use the spirit level across the brick for level, along its face or end for plumb, and the string line for the wall’s straightness. Correct the brick while the mortar is workable.
  5. Butter the next brick. Apply mortar to the end of the next brick, position it with the planned joint allowance, and press it into the bed. Scrape away squeezed-out mortar before it hardens.
  6. Continue to the next reference point. Keep the front faces aligned with the line. Do not let the line touch the bricks; use it as a visual reference and reset it whenever you move to a new course.
  7. Check the course with a straight-edge and spirit level. PPC specifically recommends checking whether the brick course is square and level with a straight-edge and spirit level. Check after several bricks, at the end of the run and again before the mortar stiffens.
  8. Verify the corner. Place the steel square against the corner faces. If the return is not square, adjust the fresh bricks now; a small error becomes difficult to correct after several courses.
  9. Finish the first course inspection. Look along the wall from both ends, check the top surface and faces, and confirm that all joints are filled. Remove loose mortar and correct any brick that is rocking or visibly out of line.

Build subsequent courses without losing alignment

Reset the line for every course

Raise the builders line to the next course height using the profiles. The line should describe the intended top or face reference consistently from corner to corner. Recheck that both profiles remain plumb and that the line has not sagged or been knocked during work.

Work from stable corners

Construct the corners far enough ahead to provide a reliable guide, then fill between them while keeping each brick against the line without touching it. If the wall has a return, check both faces and the inside corner with the steel square. Never use a visibly leaning corner as the reference for the next row.

Keep joints full and consistent

Apply enough mortar to fill the bed and end joints completely. Press each brick into position so the mortar makes continuous contact, then strike off excess mortar on the visible face. Maintain the specified joint range rather than compensating for a low brick by making one oversized joint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check frequently, not only at the end

  • Use the spirit level along the course to check level.
  • Hold it vertically against the wall face to check plumb.
  • Use the straight-edge to find local bulges or hollows across several bricks.
  • Use the string line to confirm the face remains straight.
  • Use the steel square at every corner and return.

Correct movement while the mortar is workable. Pushing a set brick later can break the bond, open a joint or disturb the courses above it.

Install brickforce only where specified

Place brickforce or other reinforcement at the courses and spacing shown by the design or applicable specification. Reinforcement requirements depend on wall height, loading, wind, openings, support and local code; do not select spacing from a generic rule of thumb. Ensure the reinforcement is fully embedded and does not force the course out of level.

Tool and finish the joints

Joint treatment depends on whether the face will remain exposed and on the project specification. North Carolina DOT’s 2012 specifications call for concave tooling for joints that remain exposed after backfill, and flush cutting for other joints. Follow the specified profile rather than choosing a finish solely for appearance.

Concave exposed joints

When the mortar has firmed enough to hold an impression but is not fully hard, compact the joint with the appropriate jointer. A properly tooled concave profile sheds water better than a rough, uncompressed joint and gives a consistent appearance.

Flush-cut joints

For joints specified as flush, cut the mortar level with the brick face and avoid smearing it across the brick. Remove crumbs and droppings before they harden. North Carolina DOT requires spilled mortar to be cleaned from exposed faces.

Do not use excessive water or aggressive scrubbing that can discolor the mortar or damage the brick surface. Protect completed work from impact and contamination while it cures.

Manage weather, curing and cold conditions

Temperature, wind, rain and direct sun change how quickly mortar loses water and gains strength. Protect fresh masonry from weather according to the mortar manufacturer’s instructions and the project specification. Plan enough time for the wall to remain undisturbed while joints firm up.

North Carolina DOT’s 2012 cold-weather rule says masonry should not be placed below 35°F (about 1.7°C) unless adequate, pre-approved protection is provided, and it calls for at least three curing days under that rule. This is a project specification, not a universal schedule: other jurisdictions and products may require different protection, heating or curing periods. Never assume that covering a wall alone makes freezing conditions acceptable.

Safety requirements for elevated work

OSHA’s Subpart Q covers concrete and masonry construction, including 29 CFR 1926.706. Plan access, material handling and fall protection before raising the wall; do not improvise a working platform from loose bricks, buckets or boards.

Overhand bricklaying

OSHA states that each employee performing overhand bricklaying and related work 6 feet (1.8 m) or more above a lower level must be protected by guardrail systems, safety-net systems, personal fall-arrest systems or a controlled access zone. OSHA also requires a guardrail, safety net or personal fall-arrest system when a worker reaches more than 10 inches (25 cm) below the level on which they are working. A controlled access zone does not replace protection around holes and similar hazards.

Practical site controls

  • Use properly designed, inspected scaffolding or another compliant access system.
  • Keep people below the work area out of the drop zone.
  • Stack bricks so they cannot roll or overload a platform.
  • Keep mortar tubs, hoses and lines arranged to prevent trips.
  • Wear eye protection when cutting or striking bricks and use hearing and respiratory protection where the equipment and site assessment require it.
  • Stop work when wind, lightning, ice or poor visibility makes the platform or wall unsafe.

OSHA rules apply in the United States. Elsewhere, follow the equivalent national and local requirements, which may use different thresholds or terminology.

Troubleshoot common problems while mortar is fresh

Symptom Likely cause Immediate correction
Face wanders away from the line The line is slack, a profile moved, or bricks are being pressed against the line Stop, retension and recheck the profiles; reposition fresh bricks without touching the line
Course is not level Uneven foundation, inconsistent bed thickness or a brick not fully seated Check the foundation and straight-edge; adjust the fresh bed or brick rather than creating one oversized joint
Corner is out of square Set-out marks or profile alignment are wrong Use the steel square immediately and reset the corner before continuing
Wall face is leaning Profiles are not plumb or vertical checks were skipped Recheck both profiles and correct workable courses progressively; seek professional advice if the mortar has set
Joints vary in width Dry-fit allowance was ignored or mortar quantities are inconsistent Measure the intended allowance, keep the bed even and replace visibly defective fresh joints
Mortar squeezes onto brick faces Bed or end joint is too large, or bricks are being forced together Reduce excess mortar, maintain the specified joint and clean the face before the spill hardens
Brick will not stay in position Mortar is too wet, the bed is contaminated or the brick is not seated Lift it, remove unsuitable mortar, prepare a clean bed and use a correctly workable batch
Fresh wall is exposed to freezing weather Work continued below the approved temperature or protection failed Stop work, protect the masonry and obtain direction from the specification holder or a qualified professional before proceeding

Quality-control checklist before the mortar sets

  • Foundation checked for level at multiple points.
  • Wall path, corners and returns match the approved dimensions.
  • Profiles are aligned with the wall path and remain plumb.
  • Builders line is taut, visible and reset for the current course.
  • Mortar joints fall within the applicable specification; the North Carolina DOT reference range is 3/8–5/8 inch.
  • Every course has been checked for level, plumb and straightness.
  • Every corner has been checked with a steel square.
  • Joints are completely filled and excess mortar is removed from exposed faces.
  • Brickforce or other reinforcement is installed only at the specified locations.
  • Fresh masonry is protected from impact, heavy rain, excessive drying and cold conditions as required.
  • Access platforms, edges, openings and drop zones meet the applicable safety rules.

When to stop and bring in a professional

Pause the build and obtain a qualified mason or engineer when the footing is not level or appears inadequate, the wall supports a structure or retained soil, the design includes significant openings or concentrated loads, reinforcement details are missing, the wall is tall or exposed to severe wind, or a course has set with a substantial alignment error. A professional can determine whether masonry must be dismantled, whether the foundation needs correction and what reinforcement or drainage the completed wall requires.

The reliable sequence is simple but unforgiving: establish a sound, level base; set plumb profiles and a straight line; dry-fit the bricks; build and verify the first course; repeat with full, consistent joints; add specified reinforcement; finish and protect the masonry; and correct errors before the mortar hardens.
