A water-resistant cover fabric does not prove that the insert is dry. The fill, bottom panel, seams and furniture layout determine how quickly trapped water can escape.
Why patio cushions become wet and mildewed
Outdoor cushion problems usually have two separate causes: moisture that cannot escape and organic residue that gives mildew something to grow on. Rain, dew, sprinklers, condensation beneath a cover and water retained in seams can all keep an insert damp. Pollen, soil, leaves, food residue and other debris then remain on the textile while it is wet.

Sunbrella’s official upholstery guidance says its fabrics do not promote mildew growth, but mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances left on the fabric. Its warranty help guidance likewise explains that regular cleaning helps prevent mildew because mildew grows on dirt, pollen and organic matter. In practical terms, “mildew-resistant fabric” is not a substitute for cleaning.
Water-resistant fabric is only one component
The outer fabric is not the whole cushion assembly. Sunbrella’s outdoor-cushion guidance says fill specifications vary by manufacturer and recommends checking them when cushions will be exposed to prolonged rain or submersion. A fabric can shed water at the surface while the insert absorbs or holds moisture inside.

Look at the cushion as a small drainage system. Water must pass through the cover or seams, move through the insert, leave through the underside, and be replaced by air. If any stage is blocked by dense foam, a non-breathing liner, a flat frame, a tight cover or cushions pressed together, drying slows dramatically.
The prevention routine that works in most outdoor settings
Use this sequence after ordinary use, before forecast rain, and whenever cushions have been under a cover for more than a short period.
- Remove loose debris. Brush or shake off leaves, grit, pollen and soil before they become embedded. Pay attention to piping, zipper tracks, button wells and the underside, where debris often collects.
- Clean on a regular schedule. Do not wait for visible mildew. Sunbrella identifies dirt, pollen and other organic matter as the material on which mildew can grow. A light, routine cleaning is easier on fabric and fill than a rare aggressive treatment.
- Use the fabric’s stated cleaner. For Sunbrella upholstery, the routine method is mild soap and lukewarm water applied with a sponge or very soft brush. Other fabrics may require different products, so the cushion label and furniture maker’s instructions control.
- Rinse until no residue remains. Cleaner left in the weave can attract dirt and leave a film. Sunbrella specifically calls for thorough rinsing after cleaning.
- Dry with air, not just surface evaporation. Stand cushions so air can reach both faces and the edges. Separate pieces rather than stacking them, and expose the underside when the construction permits it.
- Inspect before covering or storing. Feel the thickest edge and the underside, not just the top fabric. If either is cool, heavy or damp, continue drying.
- Store only when clean and dry. Restoration Hardware’s outdoor-upholstery care sheet requires cushions to be completely clean and dry before storage.
How to clean patio cushion fabric without trapping moisture
Routine cleaning for Sunbrella upholstery
Sunbrella’s current “How to Clean Sunbrella Upholstery” guidance, accessed October 9, 2026, recommends mild soap and water for routine soil. Use lukewarm water, a sponge or very soft brush, and enough solution to lift the soil without saturating the insert unnecessarily. Work over the full affected area, then rinse thoroughly and air-dry.
Recommended Free Tools
Cleaning the whole cushion face is preferable to creating a small wet patch. A sharply limited spot can dry with a visible ring if the surrounding fabric remains dry. Sunbrella also advises thorough rinsing so soap residue does not remain in the weave.
Removable casings require a construction check
A zipper does not automatically mean a casing is safe to remove or machine-wash. Sunbrella advises consulting the furniture maker before removing a casing because cushion construction varies. The cover, welt, backing, zipper, thread and insert may have different care requirements.

If the maker permits casing removal, follow that maker’s washing and drying directions exactly. If removal is not approved, clean the assembled cushion in place and give the insert enough time to dry through its core before storage.
Do not substitute a stronger cleaner for a care label
Outdoor textiles differ in dye, backing, finish, trim and foam. A product that is acceptable for one fabric may damage another or leave a residue that slows drying. When the label is missing, identify the cushion maker and obtain its current instructions before using bleach, solvents, pressure washing or a new treatment.

What to do after rain, washing or a spill
Drying is a separate task from cleaning. A cushion can look dry on top while retaining water around the seams, in the lower corners or in the insert.
Immediately after a normal shower
- Remove cushions from a frame where practical, especially if the seat has a solid platform that blocks the underside.
- Set each cushion on edge or in another position that exposes both broad faces and the bottom.
- Separate cushions so their sides are not touching.
- Turn them during the drying period so one face is not left against a damp surface.
- Do not put them in a storage box or under a tightly closed cover until the thickest part is dry.
If rain continues for days, moving cushions to a sheltered, ventilated area is more reliable than repeatedly covering wet cushions. The objective is air exchange around the insert, not merely keeping additional drops off the top.
After washing
Rinsing removes cleaner; it does not remove all water from the insert. Allow a longer drying period than you would after a light shower, and check the underside and edges before returning the cushion to service. If the cushion remains damp after repeated airing, investigate whether its fill or bottom construction is designed to drain.

After a spill
Remove solids and loose material first, then use the approved cleaner for the fabric. A spill that contains food, soil or plant matter should not be left under a cover while it is still damp, because it combines moisture with the organic residue mildew can use.

Covering patio furniture without creating a damp enclosure
A furniture cover can reduce direct rain and sun, but it cannot guarantee a dry cushion. Moisture already inside the cushion still needs a path out, and a close-fitting cover can reduce air movement.
Restoration Hardware’s care sheet advises removing cushions whenever possible before covering frames for longer than a few days. Follow that approach when a storm system, wet season or extended absence is expected. Cover the frame separately, and store the cushions clean and dry in a location that allows ventilation.
If the cushions must remain outside
- Choose a cover arrangement that does not press wet cushions tightly against one another.
- Keep the cover from resting directly on the cushion tops where that design is avoidable; a small air space helps exchange.
- Open or remove the cover after weather clears so trapped humidity can escape.
- Inspect underneath the cover periodically instead of assuming the cover has solved the moisture problem.
The cited care guidance does not certify any particular storage box or cover as mildew-proof. A deck box is useful only when the cushions put inside are already clean and dry and the box itself does not become a humid, water-trapping enclosure.
Construction features that improve drainage and airflow
When you are buying replacement cushions or specifying outdoor seating for a construction project, ask for the insert and underside details rather than relying on the phrase “outdoor fabric.” Restoration Hardware’s care sheet describes open-cell reticulated foam and a mesh bottom panel as a construction that allows water to drain rapidly and air to circulate. Treat that as a description of those components, not a guarantee for every cushion using a similar label.

| Feature to verify | Why it matters | What the available guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Open-cell reticulated foam | Large connected voids can let water leave the insert instead of remaining in a dense block. | Restoration Hardware describes this foam type as allowing rapid drainage and air circulation in the cushions covered by its care sheet. |
| Mesh bottom panel | A breathable underside gives water and air a route through the base. | Restoration Hardware describes a mesh bottom panel as supporting drainage and airflow in that construction. |
| Fill specification | Different fills absorb, retain and release water at different rates. | Sunbrella says fill specifications vary by manufacturer and should be checked for prolonged rain or submersion. |
| Raised or ventilated frame | Clearance under the cushion prevents the base from sitting against a wet, solid surface. | The sources describe the value of airflow and drainage but do not assign a universal drying time to any frame design. |
| Removable, serviceable cover | It may simplify cleaning, but removal can also damage a casing or expose a construction that is not washable. | Sunbrella advises consulting the furniture maker before removing a casing. |
Ask the supplier how the complete cushion behaves after prolonged rain, not just whether the textile is water-resistant. Request the cover, seam, fill and bottom-panel specifications in writing when the cushions are part of a new installation.
How to remove existing mildew from a Sunbrella cushion
Use the following method only when the cushion’s care instructions identify the fabric as compatible. Sunbrella’s mildew-cleaning formula is specific to its upholstery guidance; do not assume it is safe for every fabric, trim, insert or finish.
- Read the care label and maker’s instructions first. Stop if the fabric or trim is not approved for bleach.
- Prepare the Sunbrella solution. The stated mixture is 1 cup of bleach and 1/4 cup of mild soap per gallon of water.
- Wet the whole affected area. Sunbrella instructs users to spray the entire affected area rather than creating a narrow patch.
- Allow a 15-minute soak. Keep the solution in contact for the specified period.
- Agitate gently. Use a sponge, clean towel or very soft brush.
- Rinse thoroughly. Remove the cleaning solution and loosened residue from the full treated surface.
- Air-dry completely. Position the cushion so air reaches all sides, and do not store or tightly cover it while the insert remains damp.
Cleaning the full surface helps avoid water rings and uneven residue. The bleach ratio and 15-minute soak are Sunbrella’s current upholstery instructions, not a general recipe for unknown outdoor fabrics. Never infer compatibility from color, weave or a “weatherproof” marketing term.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When an optional fabric protector makes sense
Sunbrella’s “Preparing Your Patio for the Season” guidance recommends 303 Fabric Guard after repeated thorough cleanings or years of use and exposure to refresh protection. This is an optional maintenance step, not a requirement for every cushion and not a cure for a wet insert.
Use the treatment only in accordance with the current product label and the cushion maker’s instructions. Clean and rinse the fabric first, let it dry, and confirm that the treatment is compatible with the specific textile and finish. Protection applied over dirt or moisture does not solve the underlying source of mildew.

Choosing between repair, replacement and better storage
Use the condition of the cushion and the way the furniture is used to choose the next step.
| Situation | Most useful response | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Surface is dirty but the insert dries normally | Adopt routine brushing, approved cleaning, thorough rinsing and complete air-drying. | Sunbrella identifies dirt and organic residue as the material on which mildew can grow. |
| Cushion remains wet inside after ordinary rain | Check fill, seams, bottom panel and frame clearance; move it to sheltered airflow while diagnosing. | Water-resistant fabric does not establish the insert’s drainage behavior. |
| Cushions are clean but repeatedly damp under a cover | Remove them before extended covering where possible and improve ventilation around the frame. | Restoration Hardware advises removing cushions when frames will be covered for longer than a few days. |
| Existing insert is damaged, compressed or persistently waterlogged | Ask the manufacturer whether replacement fill or a complete replacement cushion is available, specifying drainage construction. | A new cover alone may leave the moisture-retaining insert unchanged. |
| Replacement is being planned | Compare fill specifications, underside mesh or other drainage provisions, cover-care requirements and ease of dry storage. | These details determine maintenance workload more directly than a broad water-resistance claim. |
No comparative product test or ranking establishes a universally best cushion or cover. Select according to the actual rain exposure, whether cushions can be brought indoors, and the manufacturer’s documented construction and care instructions.
Troubleshooting common moisture problems
The top feels dry, but the cushion smells musty
Inspect the underside, corners, piping and inner edge around the zipper. Increase separation and airflow, and do not return the cushion to a closed box or cover until the odor and dampness are resolved. If mildew is visible, use only a treatment approved for that fabric.

Look for the source rather than repeating the same surface treatment. Check whether cushions are being stored before they are dry, whether a cover traps humid air, whether the frame blocks the bottom, and whether pollen or soil is accumulating between cleanings. If the insert itself remains wet, an approved fabric cleaning method cannot correct the drainage design.
Only one cushion develops mildew
Compare its position and construction with the others. It may sit against a wall, beneath a low point in the cover, on a solid frame section or in a location that receives sprinkler spray. A difference in fill or bottom panel can also explain why one cushion dries more slowly.
The care label is missing
Do not start with bleach or an aggressive cleaner. Identify the furniture maker, request the current care instructions, and ask specifically about casing removal, insert drainage and prolonged rain exposure. Until the material is identified, keep the cushion dry and ventilated.
The furniture will be unattended for several weeks
Clean and dry the cushions before departure, then store them in a clean, dry, ventilated location if possible. If only the frame can remain outside, follow the maker’s advice about covering it and remove the cushions rather than leaving them under a closed cover for the entire absence.
A practical seasonal maintenance checklist
- Weekly or after heavy use: Brush off leaves, pollen, soil and food debris; check seams and undersides.
- After rain: Separate cushions, expose the underside and allow the insert to dry fully before covering or storing.
- At the first sign of soil: Clean with the approved mild soap method for the specific fabric, rinse thoroughly and air-dry.
- Before a wet season: Confirm where cushions will be stored, whether the frame cover requires cushion removal, and whether the inserts have documented drainage features.
- After repeated cleaning or years of exposure: Consider the optional 303 Fabric Guard treatment only if the fabric maker and current label permit it.
- Before winter or an extended closure: Store cushions only when they are completely clean and dry, as required by the Restoration Hardware care sheet.
The essential rule
Preventing mildew is a moisture-management job, not merely a fabric-treatment job. Remove organic dirt, clean with the approved method, rinse away residue, dry the insert through its core, and give water a route out through the cushion and frame. If prolonged rain is unavoidable, verify the fill and drainage construction or move the cushions to dry storage. Those steps address both conditions mildew needs: moisture that lingers and material it can grow on.
