Rubber leg pads can help on smooth concrete or tile, but they are not storm restraints. Measure the finished route after placing every chair and table; where an accessible route applies, the 2010 ADA Standards generally call for 36 inches of clear width.
Start with the walking route, not the furniture
A chair that moves a few inches can turn a comfortable patio into a blocked passage. Plan the circulation line first, then place furniture outside it. Draw the route from the door or gate to the steps, grill, seating area, shed, and any other destination people must reach. Include the space needed to open doors and gates and to turn around corners.

Measure clear width after everything is in position
Measure between the actual obstructions, not between the furniture’s center points. Chair legs, table bases, planters, umbrella stands, raised thresholds, and retaining edges all occupy space. Recheck the measurement with chairs pulled out for use, because a route that works when chairs are tucked in may disappear during a meal.

For an accessible walking surface covered by the applicable U.S. requirements, section 403.5.1 of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design gives a general minimum clear width of 36 inches (915 mm), with stated exceptions. One exception permits 32 inches (815 mm) for a maximum length of 24 inches (610 mm) under the conditions in that section. These are standards dimensions, not a blanket legal conclusion that every private patio is covered by the ADA.

The Department of Justice’s Checklist for Readily Achievable Barrier Removal specifically identifies moving furnishings or other features that narrow a route as a practical corrective action. Do not count the area occupied by legs or other obstructions as part of the clear width.
Mark the line before arranging the set
- Use chalk suitable for the surface, removable painter’s tape, or temporary markers to show the intended route.
- Place the largest fixed items first: storage boxes, grills, fire features, planters, and tables.
- Set chairs in their normal pushed-in position, then pull each one out as far as a person would actually use it.
- Walk the route in both directions while carrying a tray or opening the relevant doors. Move any item that creates a pinch point or forces a detour.
- Measure the final clear width at the narrowest point and record it so seasonal rearrangement can be checked against the same line.
Identify what kind of movement you are stopping
The remedy depends on whether the furniture is creeping across a smooth surface, rocking on an uneven one, or being lifted and tipped by wind. A grip pad is a friction measure. An anchor is a restraint. They are not interchangeable.

| Observed problem | Likely cause | Appropriate first response | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chair legs slowly spread or slide on concrete or tile | Low friction, dust, moisture, or repeated pushing | Clean and dry the contact points; install outdoor-rated rubber pads or non-slip grippers sized for the legs | A pad is not proof against wind uplift or tipping |
| Table rocks on a paver or uneven deck | Unequal leg contact or a settling surface | Correct the furniture’s leveling adjustment or repair the supporting surface; do not use a loose wedge in a walking line | Leveling does not restrain a table in a gust |
| Umbrella, chair, or light table moves during gusts | Wind drag, uplift, or overturning moment | Follow the furniture maker’s wind, storage, or tie-down instructions; use a compatible restraint only after verifying the surface and frame | Indoor anti-tip hardware or a generic pad is not a wind-load design |
| Furniture repeatedly ends up in the route | Layout leaves too little recovery space or the item is being moved during use | Relocate the item outside the marked route and create a defined parking position | A restraint should not be used to preserve an inherently unsafe circulation plan |
Stop ordinary sliding with outdoor leg pads
On smooth concrete or tile, outdoor rubber pads can increase friction, reduce scuffing, and keep a chair from drifting when someone sits down or stands up. Keter Australia’s guide, “How to secure outdoor furniture from wind: a practical guide,” published August 12, 2026, supports pads for this ordinary movement but explicitly notes that they do not stop furniture from lifting in strong gusts.

Fit and install the pads
- Turn the furniture over and inspect every foot. Replace cracked plastic caps, sharp metal edges, or loose glides before adding a pad.
- Measure the foot’s diameter or length and choose a pad that supports the whole contact area without projecting into the walking path.
- Wash grit and grease from the foot and the floor. Let both dry completely; dust trapped under rubber can reduce grip and scratch tile.
- Attach the pad according to its instructions. If it is adhesive-backed, press it firmly over the entire prepared surface and allow the stated cure time before loading the furniture.
- Set the furniture down without dragging it. Push from several directions with moderate hand force and check that all feet remain in contact.
- Repeat the walkway measurement with the pads installed and the furniture in its use position.
When pads are the wrong fix
Do not describe a non-slip pad as storm protection. If a chair or table can be lifted, blown into a railing, or tipped toward a person, remove or store it as directed by the maker, or use a restraint system specifically compatible with that furniture and surface. Pads also cannot correct a rotten deck board, a loose paver, a sloped slab, or a leg that does not bear evenly.

Prepare for wind, uplift, and tipping
Wind acts on the furniture’s projected area and can create both sliding force and an overturning moment. Tall backs, umbrellas, cushions, and lightweight tables catch more wind than low, heavy pieces. A restraint must transfer those forces into a sound supporting structure without damaging the furniture or creating a trip hazard.
Use the manufacturer’s procedure first
Read the furniture, deck, balcony, and anchor instructions together. Confirm the permitted attachment point on the frame, the required fastener, the substrate, edge distances, and whether the system is removable. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Anchor It! campaign states, “Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to secure TVs and furniture properly.” That campaign addresses indoor furniture and televisions; it is not outdoor wind-load engineering guidance, so do not transfer indoor wall-anchoring advice to a patio.

Check the surface before selecting hardware
- Concrete: identify whether you are drilling into sound structural concrete, a thin topping, a hollow edge, or a concealed utility zone. Use only a fastening method approved for the furniture and the substrate.
- Pavers: a paver can crack, shift, or lack the embedment needed for an anchor. A restraint may need to connect to a verified structural base rather than the paver itself.
- Soil or gravel: do not assume a stake has a known holding capacity. Drainage, frost, irrigation, and loose fill can change resistance.
- Timber or composite decking: confirm the profile, joist layout, edge clearances, and the deck maker’s approved components. Drilling a proprietary deck without that information can weaken the board or void requirements.
- Balconies and roof terraces: verify building rules, waterproofing, guard clearances, and the structure’s permitted loads before making a fixed attachment.
What system-specific furniture anchors tell you
Published capacities are product-specific specifications, not universal ratings. Two examples illustrate why compatibility must be checked before purchase or installation.

| Ryno Systems Furniture Anchor | 120 kg pull-out load, according to the manufacturer’s product page accessed October 9, 2026 | Described as a removable stainless-steel anchor for specified TerraSmart and BalcaSmart systems | Verify that the installed deck system, anchor point, furniture frame, and instructions all match; do not generalize the 120 kg figure to other hardware or substrates |
| MyDek Furniture Anchor | 1.5 kN maximum load, according to the manufacturer’s product page | Designed for MyDek aluminum decking profiles and the application described on that page | Use only after confirming the profile and installation details; the 1.5 kN value is not an independent test result or a rating for unrelated decks |
Neither example establishes a universal patio-anchor design. A listed pull-out load does not automatically describe wind performance, allowable direction of force, corrosion life, fastener strength, or the capacity of a different deck. Ask the manufacturer for the installation drawing and limitations when those details are not on the product page.

A safe installation workflow for a compatible restraint
- Classify the furniture. Record its weight, height, width, frame material, legs, wheels, cushions, umbrella components, and the conditions in which it will remain outside.
- Choose the attachment point. Use the maker’s designated frame location. Do not loop a restraint around a weak slat, removable cushion, glass panel, or a sharp edge that can cut the strap.
- Verify the base. Identify the exact concrete, paver, soil, timber, composite, or proprietary profile receiving the load. Stop if its strength or hidden services are unknown.
- Check route and edge hazards. Place hardware outside the measured walking line, keep straps taut without crossing a path, and maintain required guard and door clearances.
- Install exactly as specified. Use the listed fastener, drill size, embedment, washer, torque, and corrosion protection. Do not substitute a household screw or an indoor anti-tip kit.
- Test without people nearby. Apply a controlled hand pull in the directions the instructions identify. Look for frame distortion, fastener movement, cracking, deck deflection, or a strap that can release.
- Inspect on a schedule. Recheck after severe weather, deck work, moving the furniture, or any impact. Replace worn straps, corroded hardware, and damaged attachment points before reuse.
Keep furniture from blocking a route during everyday use
Create a parking position for movable chairs
Choose a marked location where chairs can be pushed fully in without entering the route. If guests routinely move them, use a visual boundary on the slab or deck rather than relying on memory. Store spare chairs, cushions, and ottomans in the same zone so they do not migrate into the passage.
Control swing, recline, and wheel movement
Check the full operating envelope of recliners, rocking chairs, folding tables, and wheeled serving carts. A piece can block a route even when its footprint is clear at rest. Lock casters when the manufacturer provides a lock, and never leave a wheel perched on a step edge or transition strip.
Protect drainage and maintenance access
Do not anchor across drain grates, cleanouts, inspection covers, irrigation controls, or expansion joints. Keep enough access for sweeping, snow removal, pressure washing, and emergency work. A furniture layout that cannot be serviced will eventually be moved unpredictably.

| Symptom | Checks | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| The chair still slides with pads | Confirm the pad is outdoor-rated, clean, fully bonded, and contacting the floor; check for water, oil, grit, or a sloped slab | Replace contaminated or undersized pads, correct the slope or foot, and relocate the chair if the surface cannot provide stable contact |
| Only one leg lifts or rocks | Inspect bent legs, unequal glides, cracked welds, and a high spot in the tile or paver | Repair or replace the furniture or level the supporting surface; do not wedge loose material where it can become a trip hazard |
| Furniture moves only in wind | Look for cushions, umbrellas, tall backs, loose covers, and a restraint attached to a nonstructural part | Remove or secure wind-catching components and follow the maker’s wind-storage or compatible anchoring procedure |
| An anchor pulls, cracks, or loosens | Stop loading it; inspect the substrate, embedment, fastener, frame, and edge distance | Do not retighten blindly. Contact the system or furniture manufacturer and repair the supporting structure before reinstalling |
| The route is clear when measured but blocked later | Measure with chairs occupied, reclined, or pulled out; check seasonal cushions and guest traffic | Redraw the use envelope, move the furniture zone, and recheck the narrowest clear point |
Inspect restraints and check recall notices
Inspect straps, clips, screws, welds, deck profiles, and the furniture frame for rust, UV damage, fraying, cracking, deformation, or looseness. Replace a component when the instructions require replacement or when its condition is uncertain.
Check the exact brand, model, and lot information against current safety notices before installing or continuing to use a restraint. For example, the CPSC notice for Cranach Hardware tip-restraint kits, dated October 23, 2025, says the recalled plastic kit can break or degrade and instructs consumers to stop using it. That notice applies to the identified recalled kit; it is not evidence that every restraint kit is defective.
Quick Recap
Decision guide: which remedy fits?
- Choose pads when the problem is ordinary sliding on a smooth, sound surface and there is no credible uplift or tipping exposure.
- Choose a compatible anchor only when the furniture and supporting system identify an approved attachment method and the substrate can carry the stated loads.
- Choose storage or relocation when wind exposure exceeds what the furniture maker permits, when the base cannot be verified, or when hardware would cross a required route.
- Choose surface or furniture repair when rocking, cracked legs, loose welds, shifting pavers, or deck deterioration is the underlying cause.
- Choose professional design help for exposed balconies, roof terraces, public routes, high wind sites, or any installation where failure could send furniture over an edge or injure a passerby.
Final safety check before use
- The walking line is marked and its narrowest clear width has been measured with furniture in its real use position.
- Every leg sits flat on a clean, sound surface; pads are correctly sized and bonded.
- Wind-catching items have a storage or restraint plan that follows the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Any anchor matches the named deck or structural system, attachment point, fasteners, and load direction.
- No strap, bolt, pad, or anchor projects into the route or creates a sharp or raised trip edge.
- Hardware has been checked for damage and the exact product has been screened for recalls.
