How to Keep Hempcrete Walls Dry During Construction and Curing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep fresh hempcrete dry from liquid rain while it is placed and while it releases moisture. Cover exposed wall tops, stop water entering through leaks, keep hurd and binder dry before mixing, and add only the water specified for the chosen binder system. Once the wall is built, provide gentle, building-wide airflow so moisture can leave; do not blast the surface or otherwise force-dry it. Leave formwork on only as long as the system instructions allow, prevent condensation beneath temporary covers, and wait for sufficient drying before rendering or cladding. Drying and binder curing are different processes, so use the current instructions for your exact product, wall thickness and climate rather than promising one universal schedule.

Why moisture control matters in hempcrete construction

Hempcrete can tolerate normal changes in air humidity, but fresh material is vulnerable to liquid water entering the wall assembly. A Penn State conference paper identifies protection from liquid rain and capillary uptake during and after construction as critical. The OzHemp/Tradical version 05 installation manual (May 2025) likewise instructs builders to protect walls from rain and prolonged direct sun. Water entering at the top of a wall, through an unfinished opening or through a roof or ceiling leak can keep the interior of the wall wet long after the weather has cleared.

Moisture management is not about making the wall as dry as possible as quickly as possible. Hempcrete must release its construction moisture to the surrounding air, while the binder undergoes its own reaction. A wall that is dried too aggressively can develop a different moisture profile from one that is allowed to equilibrate gradually, and the installation manual specifically says not to force-dry it. The practical objective is controlled protection from liquid water plus steady ventilation.

Drying and curing are separate processes

Drying

Drying is the movement of water from the fresh mix into the surrounding air. It depends on the amount of mix water, the absorbency and moisture content of the hurd, wall thickness, temperature, relative humidity, airflow, rain exposure and whether the wall is open to the building interior. A surface can feel dry while deeper material still contains moisture.

Curing

Curing is the binder reaction that develops the intended properties of the selected hempcrete system. Curing can continue after the wall no longer feels wet at the surface. Because drying and curing have different endpoints, a curing period cannot be used as proof that a wall is ready for render, cladding or another enclosure.

Published figures illustrate why a single promise is unsafe. The OzHemp/Tradical manual gives one range for drying and a separate period for curing, while the Australian Government’s YourHome guidance gives different figures for “dry to touch” and curing. They describe different systems, conditions and endpoints; they are not values to average.

Before mixing: control the moisture you put into the wall

Keep hemp hurd and binder dry

Store both components under cover and protect them from ground moisture, wind-driven rain and accidental wetting. Hurd is absorbent, so its starting moisture content affects how much free water remains in the mixed material. Binder that has been exposed to moisture can also behave differently from the product described in its instructions. Do not open bags or bulk storage until the mixing area is ready, and keep materials protected between batches.

Measure water for the selected binder system

Use the supplier’s current mix instructions for the exact binder, hurd grading and application method. Measure water rather than adding it by eye. The amount needed is influenced by the moisture already present in the hurd; assuming that all batches begin equally dry can leave one lift over-wet and another short of water. Record batch proportions so that an adjustment can be traced to a real change in material or weather.

Plan the weather window and obtain training

Schedule placement when the wall can be protected from forecast rain and when the building can later be ventilated. A short weather window is not enough if the roof, wall tops or openings will remain exposed afterward. YourHome advises builders and owner-builders to obtain specific hemp masonry training before starting. A trained crew can recognize the selected system’s acceptable consistency, remove formwork at the right time and set up protection without trapping condensation.

During placement: stop water entering from above and behind

Protect the wall as each lift is built

Use a temporary rain cover as soon as a section of wall is exposed. The OzHemp/Tradical manual’s instruction is explicit: “Cover walls against rain and long exposure of sunlight.” Arrange the cover so that water sheds away from the wall rather than collecting on its top edge. Keep the cover secure against the site’s wind, but leave enough open space for air to circulate around the wall face.

Give wall tops special attention

Fresh hempcrete at the top of a wall is an easy route for rain to enter. Keep the top protected until the next construction layer or roof detail closes it. Check parapets, service penetrations, corners and junctions where a cover can lift or form a pocket. The installation manual lists a rain-soaked wall top or ceiling insulation as a reason a hempcrete wall may fail to dry properly.

Find and stop leaks immediately

Inspect roof coverings, temporary flashings, window and door openings, scaffold interfaces and plumbing penetrations after every rain event. Rain entering through a leak can wet the wall from inside the cover, where it may not be visible from outside. Repair the path for water before trying to improve ventilation; airflow cannot compensate for a continuing source of liquid moisture.

Remove formwork according to the system instructions

Formwork shields the mix during placement but can also obstruct evaporation when left in place too long. The OzHemp/Tradical manual identifies prolonged formwork retention as an impediment to drying. Follow the selected system’s removal sequence and timing rather than using a fixed number of hours from another product. After removal, keep the wall protected from rain while exposing enough surface for air movement.

Set up temporary rain covers without creating condensation

Use a cover as a roof, not a sealed wrapper

A tarp or other temporary cover should intercept rain while allowing the wall to exchange air with the building and outdoors. Keep it off the hempcrete face where practical, slope it so water drains clear, and leave deliberate ventilation paths at the sides. Do not tape or tie the cover tightly around a damp wall in a way that traps humid air.

Inspect the underside after weather changes

Look for droplets, wet patches or sagging water on the inside of the cover. The installation manual lists condensation under covers as a cause of poor drying. If condensation appears, improve the cover’s drainage and air gap, open the building when weather permits, and remove trapped water safely. A cover that prevents rain but repeatedly wets the wall with condensation is not functioning as intended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Anchor covers for the actual site

Secure edges and tie points so wind cannot lift the cover and funnel water onto the wall. Keep anchors clear of fresh material and access routes. Recheck them after gusts, because a small opening at the top of a wall can admit more water than a broad, well-drained cover sheds.

Dry the wall with gentle, building-wide airflow

Ventilate when weather allows

Open doors and windows to establish a path for humid air to leave and drier air to enter. The OzHemp/Tradical manual recommends ventilation and says that doors and windows may be opened to stimulate airflow. Keep the wall face clear of stored materials, plastic sheeting and tightly packed insulation so air can reach the surface.

Use fans only to stimulate general air movement

Portable fans or air circulators can help move air through the building when natural ventilation is weak. Aim for broad circulation rather than a high-speed jet against one patch of wall. The same manual mentions fans but explicitly says not to force-dry the hempcrete. Stop or reposition a fan if it creates a visibly drying surface while other parts of the building remain stagnant or damp.

Balance rain protection with ventilation

During a rain event, close openings that admit wind-driven water, but reopen them when the weather is safe. Keep covers in place over exposed tops even when the interior is ventilated. The goal is a protected wall with a route for moisture to leave, not an unprotected wall exposed to a short burst of airflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Take extra care in hot, sunny or windy weather

Rapid evaporation can be as difficult to control as slow drying. The installation manual says mist spraying may be required in hot, sunny or windy conditions to prevent excessively fast drying. Treat that as a site-specific measure: confirm it with the relevant manufacturer, use clean water and a controlled application, and do not substitute misting for rain protection. A project designer or supplier should decide whether the practice is appropriate for the binder and wall condition.

How long does hempcrete take to dry and cure?

Use the figures below as attributed examples, not as a guaranteed programme. They refer to different products and endpoints, and local weather, wall thickness, exposure, formwork and ventilation can change the result.

Source and date Process or endpoint Published figure How to use it
OzHemp/Tradical version 05 installation manual, May 2025 Drying 30 to 60 days, depending on local weather; the same manual says drying can take up to 90 days Plan for a weather-dependent range, with a longer period possible before finishes.
OzHemp/Tradical version 05 installation manual, May 2025 Binder curing About 28 days This is a curing period, not proof that the wall is dry or ready for every finish.
YourHome, Australian Government, accessed 2026 Dry to touch About 7 days A surface condition that does not establish deep-wall moisture or finish readiness.
YourHome, Australian Government, accessed 2026 Curing Three months A separate curing estimate from a different guidance source and system context.

Do not average these numbers or advertise a finish date from them. Ask the binder supplier or project designer what “sufficient drying” means for the wall assembly, and allow the schedule to change when the site has persistent rain, high humidity, limited openings or a thick section.

Decide whether the wall is ready for render or cladding

Do not rely on a dry-feeling surface

Touch is useful for spotting an obviously wet area, but it cannot establish the moisture condition through the wall. Check the whole assembly, including corners, wall tops, window reveals and areas that were behind formwork or a cover. A wall that appears dry at the face may still release enough moisture to keep a render wet for an extended period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Follow the system’s readiness criterion

The installation manual allows rendering or cladding after sufficient drying and warns that render can remain wet for a long time when the hempcrete has not dried properly. The exact criterion is product- and project-specific. Confirm it with the binder supplier or qualified project designer, who can account for wall thickness, local climate, exposure, the chosen finish and the intended enclosure sequence.

Choose a vapour-open compatible finish

UK Hempcrete identifies lime and clay plaster as common vapour-open finishes. A vapour-open coating lets moisture move through the finish rather than trapping it behind an impermeable layer. Vapour permeability does not make liquid-rain exposure safe: the wall still needs protection from rain while it dries and after the finish is applied.

Interpret coating evidence narrowly

A coating study reported that the exterior coating tested limited rain absorption while retaining vapour permeability and did not slow drying in the measured blocks. That result applies to the tested product and specimens, not to every coating or wall assembly. Treat any proposed finish as a system decision requiring compatibility information from its manufacturer and the project designer.

Response: Confirm the approved removal sequence and expose the wall in the stages specified by the system. Keep newly exposed surfaces covered from rain while allowing air to circulate.

Rain-soaked wall top or ceiling insulation

Symptom: Dampness is concentrated near the top of the wall or below a roof or ceiling junction.

Likely cause: Rain entered from above and was absorbed into the top of the assembly.

Response: Stop the water path, remove or open any detail that traps moisture only as directed by the designer, and keep the area ventilated. Do not close the roof or ceiling junction until the responsible professional confirms that the material has dried sufficiently.

Leak through a temporary cover or opening

Symptom: A local wet patch appears after rain, often near a penetration, edge or cover tie.

Likely cause: Wind-driven rain bypassed the cover or entered through an unsealed opening.

Response: Repair the cover and drainage detail, inspect adjacent material for hidden wetting, and keep a record of the affected area so it receives extra observation before finishing.

Condensation beneath a cover

Symptom: Droplets form on the underside of the tarp even when rain has not visibly entered.

Response: Open the building when weather permits, clear obstructions and use a fan only for broad circulation. Reassess after the air path has been working consistently; do not infer readiness from one dry day.

Coordinate the drying plan with the rest of the build

Keep the roof and openings ahead of the wall where possible

A roof or temporary weathering layer reduces the chance that a completed wall is repeatedly reset by rain. Protect window and door openings so they do not become funnels into the wall. Sequence electrical, plumbing and insulation work so penetrations are not left as unprotected paths for water.

Inspect after every significant weather event

Walk the exterior and interior, check wall tops and junctions, look beneath covers for condensation, and mark any damp areas. A dated inspection record helps the designer and supplier distinguish a short-lived surface event from continuing water entry.

Keep finish decisions reversible until drying is confirmed

Do not install a vapour-restrictive layer merely to hide a damp appearance. Delay render or cladding when the wall has not met the system’s readiness criterion. A finish installed over an inadequately dried wall can itself remain wet for an extended period, creating a later removal and repair problem.

A practical site sequence

  1. Before delivery: Confirm the selected binder’s current instructions, wall build-up, formwork sequence, finish requirements and weather protection plan. Arrange project-specific hemp masonry training if the crew needs it.
  2. Before mixing: Store hurd and binder dry, verify their condition and measure the prescribed water for each batch.
  3. During placement: Cover exposed wall tops and faces, keep rain out of openings and inspect roof or ceiling interfaces for leaks.
  4. At formwork removal: Follow the system’s timing, expose only the approved area and immediately restore rain protection.
  5. During drying: Ventilate with doors and windows when safe, keep air paths clear and use fans only to stimulate general airflow.
  6. In hot, sunny or windy weather: Ask the manufacturer whether controlled mist spraying is appropriate; do not force-dry the wall.
  7. After rain: Check covers, wall tops, penetrations and the underside of tarps for water or condensation, then correct the entry path.
  8. Before finishing: Confirm sufficient drying with the binder supplier or qualified designer and select a compatible vapour-open render or cladding system.

Questions to settle with the manufacturer or designer

  • What moisture condition or test does this binder system require before render or cladding?
  • When may the formwork be removed for this wall thickness and weather exposure?
  • Is mist spraying permitted for this product in hot, sunny or windy conditions?
  • Which lime, clay or other vapour-open finish has documented compatibility with the wall assembly?
  • How should a wall-top or leak-affected area be inspected before enclosure?

Written answers to these questions create a project-specific plan without substituting a generic drying number for the conditions on site.
