Install a shed through bolt by drilling a straight hole through every connected wood member, using a hole the same diameter as the bolt shaft, then fitting a flat washer and nut on the threaded end and tightening the nut with a wrench or ratchet. For an exterior shed made with treated lumber, choose galvanized through bolts specifically approved for direct contact with that treatment. The exact bolt diameter, length, spacing, torque and connection layout must come from your shed plans, the connector or fastener manufacturer and applicable local requirements; the Ask the Builder video index does not publish those project-specific specifications.
What the Ask the Builder shed video covers—and what it does not
Ask the Builder’s “Original Videos By Category” index lists a DIY shed video titled “How to Install Through Bolts.” The indexed entry confirms the subject, but it does not include a transcript, a materials schedule, a video date or dimensions for the particular shed connection. That means the video title can point you to the demonstration, while the installation decisions for your shed still have to come from your drawings and the hardware instructions.

The general method is documented in Tim Carter’s Ask the Builder article “Hold Down Anchors and Through Bolts,” dated November 27, 2023. Carter describes a through bolt as hardware that passes completely through the pieces being joined. His sequence is to drill through the lumber, pass the bolt through the joined members, place a flat washer over the threads, install the nut and tighten with a wrench or a socket on a ratchet. He contrasts this with a lag bolt, which relies on a pilot hole and can lose holding power when overtightened.
Carter calls through bolts “the gold standard,” but that wording is his opinion, not a universal engineering classification. A through bolt is appropriate only when the connection design, edge distances, access to both sides and the selected hardware are suitable for your shed.

Through bolt versus lag bolt or timber screw
A through bolt creates a clamped connection across the wood. The bolt head bears on one side and the washer and nut bear on the other, so the connected members are held together by the clamping force in the bolt. Because the fastener crosses the entire assembly, you need access to both sides while installing it, or a method shown in your plans for holding the nut or head.
A lag bolt or timber screw threads into the wood rather than passing through it. It normally requires a pilot hole sized for the particular fastener and wood. Its capacity depends on the threaded embedment, wood species and condition, edge distances and installation. Do not substitute one type for the other simply because the replacement is easier to find.
| Feature | Through bolt | Lag bolt or timber screw |
|---|---|---|
| Path through the joint | Passes completely through the connected members | Threads into the wood and stops within the assembly |
| Hole requirement | Clear hole matching the bolt shaft diameter | Pilot and clearance holes specified for the particular screw or bolt |
| Hardware on the far side | Flat washer and nut are required at the threaded end | No nut; the head bears on the near side |
| Installation access | Normally requires access to both sides of the joint | Can generally be installed from one side |
| What determines capacity | Bolt specification, wood members, washers, layout, clamping and the connection design | Fastener specification, embedment, pilot hole, wood and the connection design |
Choose the hardware before drilling
Do not drill first and shop for a bolt afterward. Read the shed plans and any connector schedule, then select a bolt that matches the specified diameter, length, strength or grade and washer-and-nut arrangement. The available source material does not establish a universal shed bolt size, so a recommendation such as “always use” a particular diameter would be unsupported.

Diameter and length
The hole is not sized by a generic shed rule. Carter’s guidance is precise: “The hole diameter should match the diameter of the bolt shaft.” Measure the plain shaft, not the outside of the threads and not the head. A hole that is too small can damage the wood or force the bolt through at an angle; a hole that is too large leaves unnecessary clearance and can allow movement before the connection clamps.
Length is equally project-specific. It must pass through the connected members and leave enough thread for the washer and nut without bottoming out. Excess length can interfere with sheathing, siding or equipment; insufficient length may leave too few threads engaged. Use the length listed in the plans or the fastener manufacturer’s connection details.
Washer and nut
A flat washer spreads the nut’s bearing pressure over the wood and helps prevent the nut from crushing or pulling into the surface. Carter states, “You must use a washer at the nut end!” Match the washer’s hole to the bolt and use the washer type and dimensions required by the connection design. Do not assume a random small washer is equivalent to a specified structural washer.
Use the nut supplied or specified for the bolt. The nut must run freely on clean threads and provide full engagement after the washer is installed. If the plans call for a locking feature, follow that detail rather than improvising with a different nut.

Sheds are exposed to rain and condensation, and many are framed with pressure-treated lumber containing copper-based preservatives. Carter advises approved galvanized bolts rated for direct contact with treated lumber. The coating and base metal must be compatible with both the treatment and the expected moisture exposure; inadequately protected steel or iron can corrode when moisture and preservative chemicals meet.

Check the actual fastener manufacturer’s compatibility statement and identify the treatment used on your lumber. “Galvanized” alone is not a sufficient project specification if the product is not approved for the treatment and exposure. Keep the bolt, washer and nut system compatible; a corrosion-resistant bolt paired with an incompatible accessory can still create a weak or corroding connection.
Tools and materials checklist
- Through bolts in the diameter, length and specification listed by your shed plans.
- Flat washers and nuts that fit the selected bolts and meet the connection requirements.
- Approved galvanized exterior hardware when the plans call for treated lumber contact.
- A long wood-boring bit with the same diameter as the bolt shaft, plus a drill capable of driving it straight through the assembly.
- A tape measure, square, pencil and a way to mark both faces of the joint.
- A wrench or socket and ratchet that fit the nut.
- Clamps or temporary bracing to keep the members aligned while drilling.
- Eye protection, hearing protection when appropriate and a stable work platform.
- Plans, connection details and the fastener manufacturer’s instructions at the work area.
A long bit is a task-enabling tool, not a license to drill a larger hole. The bit diameter still follows the bolt shaft and the project documentation.
How to install a shed through bolt
1. Confirm the connection and the load path
Identify exactly which members the bolt is meant to join: for example, a post to a beam, a hold-down component to framing or another connection shown in the plans. Confirm that the members, connector plates, washers and bolt arrangement are all part of the same detail. Do not infer a structural connection from a nearby illustration or from the fact that a bolt will physically fit.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBefore drilling, check local requirements that apply to the shed and follow the design professional or building-department requirements when the connection resists uplift, lateral loads or roof forces. The available video listing does not state a load rating or structural capacity.
2. Lay out the bolt location
Mark the centerline on the face of the assembly and verify the required edge and end distances in the plans. Keep the mark clear of knots, splits, existing fasteners and connector holes unless the design specifically accounts for them. Clamp or temporarily brace the pieces so they cannot shift as the bit enters.
Do not copy a ledger-board pattern from a deck article and call it a shed rule. Related deck guidance recommends staggering ledger holes, avoiding joists and hangers and flashing above a ledger against wood siding. Those are deck examples; your shed detail may require a different layout.
3. Align the members and mark both faces
Use a square to transfer the center mark across the assembly. Mark the entry face and, when possible, the opposite face. A straight, perpendicular hole keeps the bolt head, washer and nut bearing flat. If the bit wanders, stop and realign rather than enlarging the hole to force a crooked bolt into place.
4. Drill a shaft-size hole
Fit the drill with a bit whose diameter matches the bolt shaft. Drill through all connected wood members in one aligned operation when the tool and access permit. Keep the drill square to the face and support the far side to reduce breakout as the bit exits.

If the joint is too deep for a single operation, establish a straight pilot from one face and finish from the opposite face using the transferred mark. This is a technique for maintaining alignment, not a reason to change the specified diameter. Remove chips so the bit does not bind and the members remain fully seated.
5. Test-fit the bolt without forcing it
Brush debris from the hole and slide the bolt through by hand. The shaft should pass through the joined members without hammering. If it will not pass, inspect alignment and remove only the obstruction that prevents a straight fit. Do not use a substantially larger bit to compensate for a misplaced hole; a larger clearance can alter the connection and may violate the plans.
6. Install the washer and nut
With the bolt head seated on its bearing surface, place the flat washer over the threads at the far side and turn on the nut. Carter’s sequence specifically places the washer before the nut. Ensure the washer lies flat on sound wood or on the specified connector plate, not on a splinter, ridge or overlapping hardware.
7. Tighten with the specified method
Hold the bolt head if it turns and tighten the nut with a wrench or a socket on a ratchet. Use the torque or tightening procedure stated by the plans or fastener manufacturer. The source material does not provide a universal torque value for shed through bolts, so do not substitute a guessed number.
Tighten until the specified seating is achieved. Stop if the washer begins crushing deeply into the wood, the member splits, the bolt spins, or the threads bind. Over-tightening can damage wood and hardware; under-tightening can leave a loose joint. If the connection design requires a retightening check after the wood seats, follow that instruction.
8. Inspect the completed connection
Verify that the bolt is straight, the head and washer are bearing on sound material, the nut has full thread engagement and the members remain aligned. Confirm that the connection has not displaced a connector, crushed the edge or created a path for water into an exposed end grain. Record the hardware specification and location for future maintenance.
Water management around an exterior bolt
Corrosion resistance is only part of exterior durability. Keep the connection from becoming a water trap by following the shed plans for siding, trim, flashing and sealants. If a bolt passes through an exterior ledger-like member, examine how water drains across the face and how the penetration is protected. The related deck guidance discusses flashing above a ledger against wood siding to reduce water reaching the connection; use that as a water-management example, not as an automatic shed detail.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using a bolt that is too short
Symptom: The nut cannot engage enough threads after the washer is installed.
Correction: Stop before tightening and compare the measured assembly thickness with the length specified by the plans. Replace the bolt with the documented length; do not omit the washer to gain threads.
Drilling an oversized hole
Symptom: The bolt rattles in the hole or the assembly can shift before clamping.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCorrection: Do not automatically fill the gap with shims or a larger washer. Ask the designer or follow the connection manufacturer’s repair instructions, because the required remedy depends on the joint and its capacity.
Omitting the washer
Symptom: The nut bears directly on wood or a thin connector.
Correction: Remove the nut, install the specified flat washer and retighten using the documented method. A washer is part of the connection, not an optional finish piece.
Mixing incompatible metals
Symptom: White corrosion products, rust staining or rapid deterioration appears around the hardware.

Symptom: The bolt head or washer sits at an angle, or the nut tightens unevenly.
Correction: Remove the bolt and correct the alignment before final tightening. If the existing hole is damaged or cannot be corrected without changing the design, obtain project-specific direction rather than enlarging it casually.
Over-tightening the nut
Symptom: The washer sinks deeply, wood fibers crush or the member splits.

How to decide whether the job is ready
- The plans identify the connection and its required bolt diameter, length, material or coating and washer-and-nut arrangement.
- The selected hardware is approved for the lumber treatment and exterior exposure.
- The hole diameter matches the bolt shaft, and the drill path is square through every connected member.
- The layout observes the documented edge and end distances and avoids conflicts with other fasteners or connectors.
- The nut is installed over a flat washer and tightened by the specified method.
- Flashing, siding and drainage details protect the connection without trapping water.
- Any uncertainty about capacity, uplift, lateral resistance or a damaged hole has been referred to the designer, code official or hardware manufacturer.
What the available information cannot tell you
Neither the indexed video entry nor the related general article establishes a universal bolt diameter, length, spacing, load rating, tightening torque or exact shed layout. Those values vary with the members being joined, the loads, the wood condition, the connector geometry and local requirements. Treat a generic diagram or a hardware-store package as insufficient evidence for a structural substitution.
If you need the exact demonstration shown in the video, use the original Ask the Builder video listing and the shed’s own plans together. The index confirms the video title and category, but without a published transcript it cannot be used to attribute details that are not stated in the available material.
Maintenance after installation
At the first inspection after the shed has experienced weather, look for nut movement, crushed wood, splitting, rust staining, coating failure and water paths around the penetration. Recheck only as directed by the project documentation; indiscriminate retightening can crush wood. Keep the area visible enough to inspect and maintain the flashing or siding system.
When replacing a bolt, record the original diameter, length, coating, washer and nut arrangement before removal. Replace the complete compatible hardware set when corrosion or treatment incompatibility is suspected, and resolve any enlarged or damaged hole through the project designer rather than simply installing a larger bolt.
The Bottom Line
A shed through bolt is installed through the full wood assembly with a shaft-size hole, a flat washer and a nut, using exterior hardware approved for treated-lumber contact. Let the shed plans and manufacturer instructions—not a universal size or guessed torque—control the bolt selection, layout and final tightening.
