Yes, you can install patio pavers over an existing concrete slab—but only when the slab is stable, the surface and drainage can support the selected paving system, and the new finished height works at every door, step and drain. An overlay is not a cure for a moving, badly cracked, crumbling or persistently waterlogged slab. Inspect the concrete first, choose one manufacturer-approved assembly, solve drainage and elevation details, then install the pavers with proper bedding, joints and edge restraint.
Start by deciding whether the slab is suitable
The concrete is the foundation of an overlay. Pavers can hide an unattractive surface, but they cannot make unstable concrete stable. A sound slab gives the new paving a continuous, predictable support; a failing slab can transfer movement into the pavers and joints.

- Hollow-sounding areas that may indicate debonded or undermined concrete.
- Crumbled edges, soft concrete, exposed aggregate or areas that are breaking apart.
- High ridges, abrupt depressions and contamination from paint, grease or other coatings.
- Standing water after rain and any route by which water could be trapped beneath the new surface.
Unilock’s DIY guidance treats major cracking, movement, hollow sounds and crumbling as reasons to rebuild over a properly prepared stone base rather than simply covering the defect. That distinction matters: an overlay is a finish system over serviceable concrete, not a repair for a failed base.

Check what is below and around the slab
Find out whether the patio is over a basement, crawlspace, cold cellar or other occupied area. Water-management and waterproofing consequences are more serious in those locations. Also inspect adjoining walls, foundations, fences, lawns and paving so you know where rainwater currently goes and where it can go after the overlay.
When a professional assessment is the right first step
Pause the project and ask a qualified local hardscape or concrete professional to assess the assembly if the slab is unstable, substantially deteriorated, repeatedly wet, exposed to uncertain frost movement, or expected to carry vehicle loads. Product guidance warns against using an overlay on substandard concrete for vehicle applications. A professional can also evaluate structural support and waterproofing that cannot be confirmed by a visual DIY inspection.
Drainage is the main design risk
An existing slab must shed water away from buildings, and the completed paving must preserve a safe drainage path. Water trapped below pavers can contribute to uneven units, winter damage and weed growth. Unilock describes poor drainage as the most common risk with pavers over concrete and says the concrete below must be sloped away from buildings and structures.
Trace the water before setting a line
- Observe the slab during or immediately after rain. Mark low spots and note whether water flows toward the house, a door, a foundation wall or a neighboring property.
- Check downspouts, surface drains and nearby grades. A downspout discharging onto the patio can overwhelm an otherwise acceptable slope.
- Determine where water can legally and safely discharge after the pavers are installed. Do not send runoff toward a foundation or create a nuisance flow onto another property.
- If the slab ponds, stop and design the correction before ordering pavers. The repair may involve grading, a drain, a waterproofing detail or reconstruction; the appropriate solution depends on the site.
Published slope figures are assembly-specific, not universal overlay rules. Unilock’s 2024 natural-stone detail depicts a 2% drainage slope on its reinforced concrete slab. Cambridge Pavingstones’ concrete-base instructions call for a 1-inch drop every 8 feet for that described assembly. Do not substitute one figure for the other or treat either as a code requirement for every patio.
Drainage holes and weepholes require a complete design
Manufacturer details sometimes show strategically placed drainage holes or weepholes at low points. Their size, spacing, filtration, waterproofing, connection to a suitable outlet and protection from clogging must be determined for the actual slab and site. A hole that merely moves water into a wall, basement or unconfined soil pocket is not a drainage solution. Follow the selected product system and local requirements rather than copying a detail in isolation.

Choose one compatible overlay assembly
There is no single build-up that fits every paver. A thin bedding layer for a direct overlay, a bonded modified-mortar installation for natural stone and a concrete-base assembly with geotextile and sand are different systems. They use different materials, tolerances, jointing methods and drainage assumptions. Identify the actual paver and use the manufacturer’s complete instructions for that product.
| Assembly described by the guidance | Typical application in the source | Key components or dimensions | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct overlay with a thin bedding layer | Manufacturer DIY guidance for suitable pavers over existing concrete | Cleaned slab, uniform thin bedding layer, compatible pavers, perimeter restraint and specified jointing material | Use only on sound concrete with workable drainage and finished-height clearance. |
| Bonded modified-mortar system | Unilock natural-stone overlay detail | Reinforced concrete slab shown at 4 to 8 inches, 2% slope, and 7/8-inch natural-stone units in the depicted detail | Those dimensions describe the illustrated system; confirm the actual stone and substrate requirements. |
| Concrete-base assembly | Cambridge Pavingstones installation instructions | Geotextile, a uniform 1-inch bedding-sand layer and a published 1-inch drop every 8 feet for that assembly | Do not apply these dimensions automatically to a different paver or overlay method. |
Do not combine the bedding, bond coat, jointing material or edge details from different systems into an untested hybrid. A product guide that is narrower than a general installation page controls for the chosen product.

Resolve finished height, transitions and edge restraint
Calculate the finished elevation
Add the thickness of the paver and the specified bedding or mortar to the existing slab elevation. Then check the result at every transition:
- Exterior and interior door thresholds, including the door swing and weather seal.
- Steps, stair nosings and landings.
- Floor drains, trench drains and cleanouts.
- Garage or walkout thresholds.
- Adjacent sidewalks, lawns, planting beds and existing paving.
- Foundation vents and other low openings.
Maintain the planned drainage direction while preserving safe step heights and keeping water below thresholds. If the added build-up leaves no usable transition, the slab may need reconstruction or a professionally designed height correction instead of a simple overlay.
Confine every exposed perimeter
Pavers rely on confinement to keep the field from spreading under foot traffic and seasonal movement. Where the patio is not already bounded by a wall, step or other permanent edge, install a compatible edge restraint and fasten it as specified for the selected system. Edge pieces should be cut accurately so the restraint supports the field rather than leaving a wedge-shaped gap. Do not leave a free edge assuming the joint sand alone will hold the installation.

- The approved patio pavers or natural-stone units, with enough additional material for cuts and breakage.
- The specified bedding, bond coat or mortar system—not a substitute chosen by appearance.
- Exterior jointing material approved for the assembly and exposure.
- Perimeter edge restraint and compatible fasteners where the edge is exposed.
- A masonry saw or stone cutter for accurate edge cuts.
- Stiff brooms, scrapers, brushes, a hose or low-pressure cleaning method, levels or screed equipment, and measuring tools.
- Personal protective equipment required for cutting and mixing, including eye, hearing and respiratory protection appropriate to the equipment and material.
Before placing bedding, clean the slab thoroughly. Remove dirt, loose material, paint, grease and other bond-inhibiting contamination. Unilock’s DIY sequence calls for cleaning, allowing the surface to dry and correcting high spots where needed. Do not cover damp contamination and expect the overlay to perform.
Step-by-step installation
1. Establish the control lines and finished elevation
Set a reference line from a fixed point such as a door threshold or existing step. Mark the intended finished surface and verify it at several locations with a level, laser or straightedge. Recheck the planned fall toward the drainage outlet. This is the point to discover a height conflict—not after the first row is installed.
2. Correct the slab surface within the chosen system’s limits
Remove loose concrete and address isolated high spots or projections that would prevent a uniform bedding layer. Do not use a thin overlay to compensate for major depressions, moving sections or broad areas that require structural repair. If the surface cannot be brought within the manufacturer’s stated tolerances, change the design or rebuild the base.
3. Prepare the approved bedding or bond layer
Install only the layer specified for the selected assembly. A direct-overlay system may call for a thin, uniform bedding layer. A natural-stone detail may require a bonded modified-mortar system. Cambridge’s concrete-base detail uses geotextile and a uniform sand bed. Keep the layer consistent so units are supported across their full area; do not create isolated piles intended to level individual stones.

4. Lay the pavers or stone in the planned pattern
Begin at the established control line and work across the prepared area. Keep joints consistent with the product instructions and maintain the intended pattern. Check alignment frequently against the reference lines and a straightedge. Avoid walking on freshly placed bedding in a way that displaces it. Where a unit must be cut, measure the opening, mark the cut and use an appropriate masonry saw or stone cutter. Unilock’s natural-stone instruction is to position saw cuts directly under paving-unit joints wherever possible, which keeps the cut edge visually and structurally supported.
5. Keep drainage details open and functional
Do not bridge a drain, weephole or designed outlet with bedding, mortar or jointing material. Maintain the opening and its intended path while placing adjacent units. If the planned outlet cannot be built as designed, stop rather than sealing the area and trapping water.
6. Install perimeter restraint
Fit the edge restraint tightly to the field and fasten it with the compatible hardware and spacing specified by the product system. At steps and walls, make sure the permanent structure provides a true boundary; where it does not, use the approved restraint. Recheck the edge before jointing because a loose perimeter can allow movement that joint material cannot correct.

Joint material is part of the assembly, not a cosmetic afterthought. Use the product specified for the chosen paver, bedding method and exterior exposure. Unilock’s direct-overlay product guidance recommends impervious polymeric sand for the described concrete overlay, while its natural-stone guide lists several joint options for exterior horizontal surfaces. Those recommendations are not interchangeable across products.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Confirm that the paver surface and joints meet the selected jointing product’s moisture and cleanliness requirements.
- Spread the jointing material into the joints with a stiff broom or the method specified by its manufacturer.
- Compact or settle it only as directed for that system, then remove residue from the paver faces.
- Apply water, if required, in the specified manner and amount. Avoid washing material out of the joints or directing runoff toward a building.
- Protect the installation from traffic, rain and temperature extremes for the stated curing period.
Polymeric products and mortars can fail when installed or wetted outside their instructions. Read the current product label and installation guide for temperature, weather, cleaning and curing limits before beginning joint work.

Special conditions that change the decision
Frost and seasonal movement
Freeze-thaw exposure can amplify water-related movement below and around a slab. If the slab has a history of heaving, settlement or cracking that changes seasonally, an overlay deserves a local assessment rather than a simple surface treatment. Drainage, base conditions and edge confinement must work together; pavers cannot eliminate movement originating below the concrete.
Basements and cold cellars
A patio over an occupied or enclosed space raises waterproofing and leakage concerns. Confirm how the slab and surrounding walls shed water, where a drain would discharge, and whether the added system could conceal a leak. Get a professional review when the consequences of trapped water extend indoors.
Vehicle loading
Pedestrian patio guidance does not establish a vehicle-rated assembly. If cars, trailers or delivery vehicles will use the area, verify that the slab, paver product, bedding, reinforcement and edge restraint are specifically approved for those loads. Product guidance warns against an overlay on substandard concrete for vehicle use; do not infer vehicle capacity from a successful foot-traffic installation.

Published dimensions and how to interpret them
The following figures come from manufacturer installation details and apply only to the systems identified.
| Figure | Published context |
|---|---|
| 2% drainage slope | Unilock, 2024, for the reinforced concrete slab shown in its natural-stone overlay detail; not a universal requirement for every existing slab. |
| 1-inch drop every 8 feet | Cambridge Pavingstones’ concrete-base installation instructions for that described assembly; not interchangeable with another system. |
| 4-to-8-inch reinforced slab | Unilock’s 2024 natural-stone overlay diagram; it does not establish the thickness of every existing patio slab. |
| 7/8-inch natural-stone units | Unilock’s 2024 natural-stone overlay diagram; verify the dimensions of the selected product. |
| 1-inch bedding sand | Cambridge Pavingstones’ concrete-base assembly; do not apply the dimension automatically to a different overlay method. |
When not to proceed as a simple DIY overlay
- The slab is moving, badly cracked, hollow in broad areas or crumbling.
- Water ponds and there is no confirmed, safe drainage destination.
- The work is over a basement or cold cellar and waterproofing is uncertain.
- Frost movement, structural support or subgrade conditions are unknown.
- Vehicles will load the area without a specifically approved design.
- The selected paver manufacturer does not approve the product or assembly for installation over concrete.
- The finished height cannot be reconciled with doors, steps, drains or adjoining surfaces.
In these situations, a local hardscape or concrete professional can determine whether to repair the slab, rebuild over a stone base, redesign drainage or select a different paving system. Covering an unresolved defect usually makes later correction more disruptive, not less.
Bottom line for a durable patio overlay
Install patio pavers over a concrete slab only after proving that the slab is sound, water can leave the assembly, the finished elevation works at every transition and the exposed edges can be restrained. Then follow one complete, product-approved system from surface preparation through bedding, placement, jointing and curing. If any of those conditions cannot be demonstrated, rebuild or obtain a site-specific professional design instead of treating pavers as a patch for failing concrete.
