Yes, you can usually install a compatible Blink doorbell using existing low-voltage doorbell wiring—but “wired” does not always mean battery-free. The original Blink Video Doorbell and Blink Video Doorbell 2nd Gen still use AA lithium batteries while wiring supplies supplemental power and may operate a compatible indoor chime. The newer Blink Wired Doorbell 2K+ has different voltage requirements, requires a bypass cable with an existing chime, and does not support an in-home mechanical chime.
Identify the exact model before connecting anything. Then verify the transformer, chime, wiring, and Wi-Fi, complete app setup, shut off power at the breaker, connect the two low-voltage wires, and test the finished installation.

Blink Wired Doorbell 2K+: Separate, newer model. In the U.S. and Canada, Blink lists 12–24 VAC, 50 or 60 Hz, 10–40 VA, with 30 VA or higher recommended. It requires a bypass cable when using existing chime wiring and does not operate an in-home mechanical chime.
Blink Battery Doorbell 2K+: Do not assume this is the same product as the Wired Doorbell 2K+. Follow its separate installation instructions.
See Blink’s current product catalog if you are unsure which model you purchased.
What a wired installation actually does
On the original Video Doorbell and 2nd Gen model, existing wiring provides supplemental low-voltage power. It can extend battery life and, where supported, allow the existing indoor mechanical or digital chime to sound. It does not automatically convert these battery-powered products into permanently battery-free doorbells.
Blink describes battery life of up to two years under stated conditions and usage levels, but that is an estimate rather than a guarantee. Wi-Fi quality, motion activity, Live View use, weather, and power compatibility all affect battery life. Wiring and cloud-storage or subscription features are separate matters; a wired connection does not by itself provide every Blink feature.

Check compatibility before touching the wiring
1. Read the transformer label
Look for the transformer near the electrical panel, inside or near the chime, in a garage, or in an attic. Confirm:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Output is VAC, not DC.
- The voltage falls within the range for your exact Blink model.
- Frequency is 50–60 Hz.
- The VA rating is suitable for the doorbell and chime.
- The transformer and chime voltage match—for example, a 16V chime should generally use a 16V transformer.
Do not choose a replacement transformer by voltage alone. VA rating, chime compatibility, wiring condition, local requirements, and the installation method also matter. If the transformer must be replaced, use a qualified electrician unless you are experienced with low-voltage electrical work and local rules permit the job.
Use Blink’s voltage guide to help identify the system.
2. Identify the chime
Determine whether the existing indoor unit is a mechanical chime, which uses moving parts and a physical strike, or a digital/electronic chime. Compatible models may support one or both types, but the Wired Doorbell 2K+ does not support an in-home mechanical chime.
3. Inspect the wires and Wi-Fi
Make sure the two low-voltage conductors are intact, long enough to reach the new back plate, and not badly corroded. Also check Wi-Fi at the mounting location. A doorbell can have correct wiring and still disconnect repeatedly if the wireless signal is weak.

Set up the doorbell in the app before mounting
Complete the electronic setup while the doorbell is easy to handle:
- Install the required AA 1.5V lithium non-rechargeable batteries in battery-powered models.
- Open the Blink app and tap Add device +.
- Scan the doorbell’s QR code.
- Choose an existing system or create one.
- Connect to the temporary Blink device network when prompted.
- Connect the doorbell to your home Wi-Fi.
- Install any firmware update requested by the app.
- Confirm that the camera appears online before beginning the physical installation.
Blink specifically recommends completing 2nd Gen setup before mounting. App labels can vary by model, app version, language, and region, so follow the on-screen prompts if your menu differs.
Install a 1st Gen or 2nd Gen Blink Video Doorbell
1. Turn off electrical power
Switch off the breaker supplying the doorbell transformer and chime. Do not assume the circuit is safe because the doorbell button is not operating. If you cannot confidently identify the breaker, turn off the main breaker or hire a licensed professional.
Doorbell wiring is normally low voltage, but the transformer is connected to household electrical power. Never connect household line voltage directly to the Blink doorbell.
2. Remove the old doorbell
Unscrew the old button. Hold or tape the two wires so they cannot fall back into the wall, then disconnect them. On compatible Blink back plates, the two doorbell wires are not polarity-sensitive: either wire can connect to either screw terminal.
3. Position the mounting template
Place the mounting holes approximately 40–48 inches (102–122 cm) above the ground. Adjust the height for the doorway, visitors’ faces, packages, steps, and the camera’s field of view. Use a wedge or corner mount if the camera points too far toward a wall or needs a better view of approaching visitors.

5. Connect the two low-voltage wires
Attach one existing doorbell wire to each screw terminal on the Blink back plate. Either wire may go to either terminal. Tighten the screws securely and keep exposed copper from touching the other terminal or mounting hardware.
6. Mount the doorbell
Align the top edge of the doorbell with the back plate and press it firmly into place until it clicks or locks. Keep the release key; it may be required to remove the unit later.
7. Restore power and finish setup
Turn the breaker back on. Wait for the doorbell to reconnect, then confirm its status in the Blink app.
8. Choose and test the chime
For a supported 1st Gen or 2nd Gen installation, open the model-specific chime settings, select Mechanical or Digital, and test the sound. The documented 2nd Gen path is:
Home screen → More (…) on the Video Doorbell thumbnail → Device Settings → Doorbell and Chime Settings → Mounting and Chime Setup → Mount Doorbell

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Install the Blink Wired Doorbell 2K+
Do not use the 1st Gen or 2nd Gen procedure unchanged for this model. In the U.S. and Canada, its listed input is 12–24 VAC, 50 or 60 Hz, 10–40 VA, with 30 VA or higher recommended.
Use the bypass cable with an existing chime
- Turn off power at the breaker.
- Remove the existing chime cover.
- Loosen the Front and Trans terminal screws, leaving the existing doorbell wires in place.
- Connect one end of the included bypass cable to Front.
- Connect the other end to Trans.
- Retighten both terminal screws.
- Install the doorbell according to the mounting instructions and restore power.
The bypass cable changes the chime circuit so the Wired Doorbell 2K+ can receive power. It does not make the existing mechanical chime compatible: Blink states that this model does not support an in-home mechanical chime. Use a Blink Chime, compatible Blink Mini camera, Alexa device, or another supported notification method instead.
For a location without usable wiring, Blink documents a separate 24V plug-in power adapter. This is a low-voltage accessory—not a connection from the doorbell directly to a household outlet. See the Wired Doorbell 2K+ setup instructions.
If there is no compatible wiring
You can:
- Install the doorbell in battery-only mode.
- Use a model-specific Blink plug-in adapter where supported.
- Have a professional install a new low-voltage doorbell circuit.
- Choose a different smart doorbell designed for your available power source.
Renters should obtain permission before altering wiring. Battery installation or an approved mounting solution may be more appropriate. Be cautious with third-party brackets: Blink states that its warranty may not cover third-party accessories or damage resulting from their use.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| “Wired power not supported” | Voltage or VA is outside the model’s requirements; wiring or chime configuration is incompatible; the system is operating in a limited mode. | Recheck the exact model, VAC, frequency, VA rating, wiring, and any required Sync Module or compatible power option. |
| Indoor chime is silent | Wrong model or chime selection, loose wiring, insufficient power, or incorrect bypass configuration. | Check model support and app selection. The Wired Doorbell 2K+ cannot ring an in-home mechanical chime and needs another notification method. |
| Doorbell will not connect | Weak Wi-Fi, incomplete setup, QR-scanning problem, or a temporary app issue. | Set up near the router, retry QR pairing, complete firmware updates, and improve Wi-Fi coverage at the door. |
| Batteries drain quickly | Inadequate supplemental power, high motion traffic, frequent Live View use, weak Wi-Fi, cold weather, or an incorrect installation. | Verify transformer compatibility, terminal connections, signal strength, and usage conditions. Do not assume the wired connection makes the model battery-free. |
| Doorbell resets or goes offline | Power instability, loose terminal connection, or unstable Wi-Fi. | Turn off power, inspect and retighten the low-voltage terminals, restore power, and retest the network. |
| Camera view is poor | Mounting height or angle is wrong. | Reposition the back plate or use a compatible wedge or corner mount while keeping the wires accessible. |
When an underpowered system still connects, Blink may place the doorbell in Event Response mode. It can appear functional while losing features or failing to operate the indoor chime. Correct the power and wiring problem rather than repeatedly cycling the breaker.
Final installation checklist
- Exact Blink model identified.
- Correct VAC, frequency, and VA rating confirmed.
- Transformer and chime compatibility checked.
- Breaker switched off before wiring.
- Existing wires retained and securely connected.

When to stop and call an electrician
Stop if you find household line voltage, cannot identify the transformer or breaker, see damaged or overheated wiring, cannot verify the output with confidence, need to replace or relocate the transformer, or are unsure how the chime circuit is configured. A licensed electrician can verify the low-voltage supply and install a compatible transformer safely.
For model-specific requirements, use Blink’s 1st Gen wiring guide, 2nd Gen mounting guide, and Wired Doorbell 2K+ guide.
