How to Improve Ventilation in a Crowded Training Centre

The most reliable way to improve air in a crowded training centre is to work in stages: verify that the installed system delivers at least the applicable outdoor-air requirement, increase outdoor air and total airflow where the system and weather allow, improve supply and exhaust distribution, then add compatible filtration or portable HEPA cleaning. Use a goal of at least 5 clean-air air changes per hour (ACH) when possible, but treat it as a planning guide rather than a guarantee or universal optimum.

Ventilation decisions belong with the centre’s facilities team and, for design changes or balancing, a qualified HVAC professional. The right combination depends on room volume, occupancy, exercise intensity, building age, equipment capacity, local code, energy limits and the needs of the people using the space.

What “better ventilation” means in a busy training centre

A training room can feel comfortable while still receiving too little outdoor air, and an open door can create a draft without removing air evenly from the occupied zone. A sound plan separates three related functions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Outdoor-air ventilation: brings in air from outside and exhausts or displaces indoor air.
  • Air movement: distributes supply air and removes air from areas where it can stagnate.
  • Air cleaning: filters or otherwise removes particles from air that is already in the room.

These routes can contribute to clean air in different ways. CDC and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (CDC/NIOSH) describe ventilation air changes and equivalent clean-air air changes from filtration as quantities that can be considered together. Their 2024 guidance says to aim for at least 5 clean-air ACH when possible. It also calls 5 ACH a rough guide, not a hard rule, proven optimum or promise that transmission cannot occur. A high-occupancy class, intense breathing during exercise or a group that includes higher-risk occupants may justify a more conservative design.

Filtration does not substitute for outdoor air. A portable cleaner can reduce particles in recirculated room air, but it does not remove carbon dioxide, humidity or other indoor contaminants by dilution. Conversely, bringing in outdoor air without adequate distribution can leave stagnant pockets. The practical objective is a layered system that is code-compliant, maintainable and appropriate for how the room is actually used.

Step 1: Establish the baseline before changing equipment

Start with facts about the building and its current operation. Ask the facilities team to assemble the mechanical drawings, equipment schedules, control settings, maintenance records and room occupancy assumptions. Building construction or renovation year and intended occupancy can affect which ventilation code requirements apply. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, so a U.S.-based CDC recommendation does not replace local code, lease obligations or an engineer’s assessment.

Confirm the room’s real use

  • Record the maximum number of people in each training room, not just the nominal class size.
  • Note the activity: low-movement instruction, circuit training, weight work, dance or high-intensity intervals can produce very different breathing rates.
  • Map schedules, including back-to-back classes that leave little time for air exchange between groups.
  • Identify rooms that are routinely over capacity, have doors kept closed, or are used differently from the original design.

Check that the existing system is operating

Maintenance staff should verify that outdoor-air dampers, supply fans, return fans, exhaust fans, controls and sensors respond as intended during occupied hours. Inspect coils, belts, grilles, diffusers and filters for blockage or damage. A system that was designed to provide outdoor air cannot meet that design if a damper is stuck, a filter is loaded or a control sequence reduces ventilation when classes are in session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the current operating schedule and occupancy assumptions with the applicable minimum outdoor-air requirement. Meeting the minimum is the baseline, not proof that the room is ideal for present-day use. Where the system has capacity, current code can be used as an improvement target, subject to a qualified review of the equipment and ductwork.

Document conditions that affect the decision

Record outdoor temperature, humidity, air-quality alerts, class occupancy and equipment status when evaluating changes. Outdoor-air increases can raise heating or cooling demand and may create uncomfortable humidity or temperature conditions. A baseline taken during a half-empty class should not be treated as representative of a full session.

Step 2: Increase outdoor air safely

Once the baseline is known, facilities staff can determine whether the system can bring in more outdoor air than its minimum setting. This may involve opening outdoor-air dampers farther, changing a control sequence or extending ventilation before and after occupied periods. A qualified professional should confirm that fans, coils, ducts and controls can handle the change.

Use doors and windows only when conditions permit

Natural ventilation can supplement mechanical ventilation where the building and local rules allow it. Do not open windows or exterior doors if doing so creates a fall or security hazard, conflicts with fire protection, admits smoke or other outdoor pollution, allows extreme weather to damage the room, or produces unsafe temperature and humidity. In some buildings, opening one door simply short-circuits airflow near that doorway rather than ventilating the occupied zone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When natural ventilation is used, define who opens and closes each opening, under which weather and air-quality conditions, and how the room is secured afterward. The procedure should never rely on an instructor improvising during a crowded class.

Account for energy and comfort

More outdoor air usually means more heating, cooling or dehumidification work. Facilities managers should check whether the air-handling unit can maintain acceptable conditions at the intended airflow and whether condensate, coil capacity and controls remain adequate. If comfort deteriorates, occupants may close doors, disable fans or avoid the space, defeating the intended improvement. A smaller, consistently maintained increase can be more effective than a setting that is routinely overridden.

Step 3: Improve airflow and distribution

Ventilation quantity is only part of the result. Supply and exhaust locations, return paths, ceiling height, equipment layout and partitions determine whether clean air reaches people and whether contaminated air is removed.

Have airflow assessed and balanced

An HVAC professional can measure supply and return flows, verify outdoor-air delivery, rebalance branches and identify zones with poor mixing. The review should include demand-controlled ventilation: controls that reduce airflow based on occupancy or carbon dioxide can save energy, but they must be configured to maintain adequate ventilation during occupied periods and peak classes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review supply and exhaust locations

Look for areas behind tall equipment, along walls, in corners and near storage where air appears stagnant. Check that supply diffusers are not blocked by racks or temporary partitions and that return or exhaust grilles are not covered. Restroom exhaust and other relevant exhaust systems should operate continuously or on the schedule intended by their design; a failed exhaust fan can alter pressure relationships throughout the centre.

Use fans without creating a person-to-person air path

Fans can help mix air, but placement matters. Do not position a fan so it blows air directly from one participant toward another. Aim air toward a return or exhaust path, or use a configuration designed by a professional to improve mixing without creating a direct cross-flow between faces. A fan that merely makes a room feel cooler is not evidence that it is removing contaminants.

Step 4: Add compatible filtration and room air cleaning

Upgrade the central HVAC filter when the system permits

CDC/NIOSH recommends MERV-13 or better central filters when they are compatible with the HVAC system. Compatibility must be checked, not assumed. A higher-efficiency filter can increase pressure drop; if the fan, housing or controls cannot maintain the required airflow, the upgrade may reduce total ventilation.

Before ordering, verify the filter dimensions, airflow direction, rack fit and permitted pressure drop with facilities staff or the equipment manufacturer. Check for bypass leakage around the filter, because air that flows around the media is not being cleaned. Establish a replacement schedule based on loading and operating conditions rather than waiting for a visibly dirty filter. Record the change so future staff know the grade and size that the system was designed to accept.

Use portable HEPA cleaners as a supplement

Portable or built-in HEPA fan-and-filter systems can add room air cleaning, including in workout rooms. Choose a unit using the room’s volume and its clean-air delivery rate (CADR) or another suitable clean-air rating. The rating should be appropriate for the actual room, not merely the manufacturer’s largest advertised area.

Place the cleaner where its intake and discharge are unobstructed and where the discharge does not blow directly from one occupant toward another. Several correctly sized units may distribute clean air more evenly than one unit at a high setting. Keep doors, equipment and temporary barriers from blocking the airflow path, and account for noise: a unit that is turned off during instruction contributes no cleaning.

Portable HEPA equipment recirculates and cleans room air. It does not introduce outdoor dilution air, correct a failed exhaust system or remove all gases and humidity. Continue operating the code-compliant ventilation system, and maintain the portable unit according to its filter and fan instructions.

Step 5: Use the 5-ACH goal without misusing it

CDC/NIOSH’s 5-or-more clean-air ACH target is useful for comparing a proposed combination of outdoor air, mechanical airflow, natural ventilation and filtration. It is not a universal safety threshold. The agency describes it as a rough guide, and the optimum strategy is not known for every room and occupancy.

For planning, ask how much clean air each intervention contributes to the specific room. Outdoor-air flow contributes dilution; filtration contributes equivalent clean-air flow; room volume and operating time determine how those flows translate into air changes. A portable cleaner’s CADR should therefore be judged against the room it serves, not against a generic product label.

Intervention What it contributes Conditions to verify Main limitation
Increase outdoor-air damper setting More outdoor-air dilution Fan, coil, duct and control capacity; weather and energy impact May increase heating, cooling and humidity loads
Open windows or doors Natural outdoor-air flow Security, fire safety, outdoor pollution and weather Flow varies and may be uneven
Rebalance supply and exhaust More even distribution and removal Measured flows, diffuser and grille locations Requires qualified assessment and may expose duct or fan limits
MERV-13-or-better central filter Particle removal from recirculated air System compatibility, fit, bypass leakage and pressure drop Does not add outdoor air
Portable HEPA air cleaner Supplemental particle removal in the room Room size, CADR, placement, noise and filter service Does not provide outdoor-air dilution

Compare options on the same decision axes: whether they add outdoor air or clean existing air, their clean-air contribution in the actual room, compatibility with the installed HVAC system, suitability for occupancy and exercise intensity, installation and operating cost, energy use, noise, maintenance and the possibility of directing air from one person toward another.

Step 6: Monitor ventilation with context

Use carbon dioxide as an indicator, not a universal pass/fail number

Carbon-dioxide readings can help a facilities team evaluate ventilation when they are interpreted against an appropriate baseline. A single concentration target is not reliable for every room type, occupancy pattern or outdoor-air condition. Place the sensor where people breathe, away from supply diffusers, open windows, doors and direct exhalation. Use a calibrated, suitable instrument and record occupancy and ventilation settings during the reading.

Establish a baseline under known conditions, such as a normal class with the intended outdoor-air setting. CDC’s Ventilation FAQs state that, when outdoor or total airflow and occupancy have not changed, a measurement above 110% of the baseline suggests a potential problem to investigate. This comparison point is not a universal health limit. Investigate changes in sensor location, occupancy, damper position, fan operation and weather before deciding what action is needed.

Track conditions over time

  • Log occupancy, class type, doors or windows open, HVAC mode and portable-cleaner settings.
  • Compare readings from the same location and similar class conditions.
  • Investigate sustained or repeated deviations rather than reacting to one transient value.
  • Recheck after filter replacement, control changes, equipment repairs or a change in room use.

Operating practices for crowded sessions

Engineering changes work best when daily operations support them. Publish the maximum occupancy for each room and give instructors a simple way to report stuffiness, unusual odors, failed equipment or doors that cannot remain open. Schedule maintenance and filter changes outside peak classes where practical, but do not postpone a safety-critical repair.

Allow the ventilation system to run for the occupied schedule specified by the facilities plan. If pre- or post-occupancy purge periods are used, document their duration and confirm that controls actually command the required airflow. Keep supply and return grilles clear of mats, storage and banners. Do not disable demand-controlled ventilation, exhaust fans or portable cleaners to reduce noise without an alternative plan.

When a class is unexpectedly full, use a defined response: move participants to a larger room, reduce occupancy, increase approved ventilation settings or add correctly sized supplemental air cleaning. Do not solve crowding by pointing a high-speed fan across the group.

Troubleshooting common ventilation problems

Symptom Checks Appropriate next action
Room feels stuffy during a full class Occupancy against design assumptions, outdoor-air damper, demand-control setting, filter loading and exhaust operation Have facilities staff verify outdoor-air delivery and controls; rebalance or adjust with qualified help
One corner is hot, humid or stale Blocked diffuser or return, furniture and partitions, supply/return balance Clear obstructions and request airflow measurements; do not rely on a fan aimed across occupants
New filter causes weak airflow Filter grade, size, fit and pressure drop; fan status Confirm MERV-13 compatibility with the manufacturer or HVAC professional and correct bypass or installation issues
Portable cleaner is noisy or ineffective Room-size rating, CADR, operating speed, blocked intake or discharge, filter condition Reposition, service or add correctly sized units; keep the central ventilation system operating
CO₂ reading rises unexpectedly Sensor location and calibration, occupancy, doors, dampers, fans and exhaust Compare with the established baseline and investigate if conditions were otherwise unchanged

Plan the work in practical phases

Immediate checks

  1. Confirm the room’s actual occupancy and activity level.
  2. Inspect filters, grilles, fans, dampers and controls for obvious faults.
  3. Verify that restroom and other exhaust systems operate as scheduled.
  4. Remove obstructions from supply and return paths.
  5. Document a baseline under known occupancy and operating conditions.

Technical improvements

  1. Ask a qualified professional to measure outdoor-air and total airflow and identify stagnant zones.
  2. Assess whether outdoor-air settings can be increased without exceeding equipment, comfort or humidity limits.
  3. Review demand-controlled ventilation and occupied-hour control sequences.
  4. Rebalance supply and exhaust distribution where measurements show deficiencies.
  5. Evaluate a MERV-13-or-better central filter only after confirming compatibility.

Supplemental cleaning

  1. Calculate the room volume and select portable HEPA equipment by suitable CADR or clean-air rating.
  2. Place units for unobstructed intake and discharge without creating direct person-to-person airflow.
  3. Set a maintenance and filter-replacement schedule and assign responsibility.
  4. Reassess noise, temperature, occupancy and CO₂ readings after installation.

Safety, code and professional boundaries

Applicable building and mechanical codes remain the minimum legal framework. The relevant requirement depends on jurisdiction, construction or renovation history and intended occupancy. CDC/NIOSH guidance is U.S.-based and does not replace a local code review or system-specific engineering analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not increase outdoor-air settings beyond equipment capacity, install a higher-resistance filter without checking pressure drop, block fire or smoke-control equipment, or use doors and windows in a way that compromises security or emergency egress. Engage a qualified HVAC professional for airflow measurements, balancing, control changes, duct modifications and any work that could affect combustion appliances or life-safety systems.

A defensible ventilation standard for the centre

A crowded training centre should be able to show how its ventilation plan matches actual occupancy and use. The strongest plan confirms the applicable outdoor-air baseline, maintains the system, increases outdoor air where feasible, distributes it without direct cross-flow, adds compatible filtration and uses portable HEPA cleaning when room-specific calculations justify it. It then monitors conditions against a documented baseline and revises the plan when occupancy, room layout or equipment changes.

Use 5 or more clean-air ACH as a practical CDC/NIOSH planning goal when possible, while recognising that it is a rough guide rather than a guarantee. Treat the 110%-of-baseline CO₂ comparison as an investigation trigger under unchanged conditions, not as a universal ppm limit. This layered, measured approach improves the chance that every participant—not only those nearest a diffuser or open window—benefits from cleaner air.
