Use PDFIMPORT when you need editable AutoCAD objects. Use PDFATTACH when the PDF is only a reference or tracing guide. If the file is scanned or image-only, AutoCAD can bring in the image, but it will not automatically turn the pixels into accurate, editable CAD linework.
The most important qualification is that PDF import is not DWG recovery. AutoCAD converts supported PDF content into drawing objects, but original layers, associative dimensions, intelligent hatches, text structure, and some precision may be lost.

Before importing: identify the type of PDF
Zoom in closely on the document and try selecting lines or text in a PDF viewer:
- Vector PDF: lines remain sharp when zoomed and may be selectable individually. This is the best candidate for editable geometry.
- Raster or scanned PDF: the page behaves like a photograph or image. Native AutoCAD import preserves the image but does not vectorize it.
- Mixed PDF: some geometry or text is vector while stamps, scans, photographs, or markups are raster.
This distinction determines whether PDFIMPORT will produce useful CAD objects or simply an image reference. See Autodesk’s PDF import limitations and supported content.

Method 1: Import a PDF as editable AutoCAD objects
For a vector-based technical drawing, the main workflow is:
- Save a backup copy of the DWG.
- Create a dedicated layer such as
PDF_IMPORT_RAW. - Open the Insert tab and select Import → PDF Import, or type
PDFIMPORT. - Select the PDF and choose the page to import.
- Specify the insertion point, scale, and rotation.
- Select the content types required: vector geometry, solid fills, TrueType text, and raster images.
- Choose the layer-assignment method and, where available, whether the result should be imported as a block.
- Confirm the import and place the content if AutoCAD is set to specify the insertion point on-screen.
When that on-screen option is disabled, AutoCAD imports the page at the UCS origin, (0,0). Autodesk documents the full PDFIMPORT workflow.
Import only what you need
For a first pass, enable vector geometry and any TrueType text you need. Consider leaving fills and raster images disabled if the sheet contains heavy hatching, logos, scans, or photographs. Importing everything can create unnecessary clutter.

Depending on the installation, imported content may be assigned to the current layer, recreated from PDF layer information, placed on new layers, or organized by import category.
The command-line alternative is:
-PDFIMPORTThis version can prompt for the file, page, insertion point, scale, rotation, selected underlay area, import settings, and whether to keep, detach, or unload an existing underlay. See Autodesk’s command-line PDF import reference.
Method 2: Attach a PDF as an underlay
If you only need to compare, trace, coordinate, or display the PDF, attach it instead of converting it:

- Type
PDFATTACH. - Select the PDF.
- Choose the page.
- Specify the insertion point, scale, and rotation.
- Choose an absolute path, relative path, or no path where applicable.
An attached PDF is an externally referenced underlay. It can be clipped, unloaded, detached, faded, displayed in monochrome, and adjusted for contrast, but it is not native editable DWG geometry and cannot be bound to the drawing. A multi-page PDF is handled one page at a time. Autodesk’s PDFATTACH documentation explains the attachment process.

Bonus step 1: import only a selected area
Importing a complete sheet often brings in title blocks, notes, revision clouds, logos, and unrelated details. To reduce cleanup:
- Attach the PDF with
PDFATTACH. - Select the underlay.
- Choose Import as Objects.
- Define a rectangular or polygonal crossing region around the required detail.
- Open Settings and choose only the object types you need.
- Choose whether to keep, detach, or unload the underlay after importing.
This selective workflow is useful when only one plan area or detail belongs in the DWG. Refer to Autodesk’s instructions for importing a selected region from a PDF underlay.
Bonus step 2: clean and verify the imported drawing
Correct the scale using a known measurement
Do not assume that letter, A4, ARCH D, or another paper size represents the model’s working scale. Direct PDF page import does not use the INSUNITS system variable, so verify the result manually.
- Find a known dimension or reference distance.
- Measure the imported distance with
DISTor the Measure tools. - Calculate:
Scale factor = desired real length ÷ measured imported length. - Use
SCALEwith a suitable base point. - Check at least one independent measurement afterward.
For example, if a wall should be 20 feet but measures 19.6 feet:

20 / 19.6 = 1.020408...PDF output can lose precision at line and arc endpoints, tangent points, large coordinate values, very broad scale ranges, and low resolutions. A drawing that looks right may still measure incorrectly. See Autodesk’s PDF scale guidance and precision warnings.

Organize layers and remove clutter
Isolate the raw import layer, then remove title-block elements, markups, duplicate content, and unwanted fills. Useful commands include:

Save another copy before using aggressive cleanup commands. PDF linework may arrive as many short segments rather than clean original entities, so use PEDIT or polyline-edit tools to join compatible segments and inspect important geometry manually.
Recover SHX text where possible
Older AutoCAD drawings may use SHX fonts. In the PDF, that lettering can appear as geometry instead of recognizable text. After importing, select the relevant geometry and try PDFSHXTEXT. AutoCAD compares the shapes with selected SHX fonts and attempts to create multiline text. Recognition depends on font similarity and settings; Asian-language big fonts are not supported by this conversion workflow.
Rasterized text cannot be reliably recovered with PDFSHXTEXT.
What may not survive PDF import
AutoCAD can import supported vector geometry, fills, raster images, and TrueType text, but the result may not retain the source drawing’s object intelligence:
- dimensions may no longer be associative;
- leaders and tables may arrive as separate objects;
- hatches may be fragmented or represented as solids;
- curves may become polylines or short segments;
- source layers may be absent or incomplete;
- PDF markups and comments should not be expected to become normal editable drawing objects.
Imported raster images may also be saved as PNG files in the location specified by PDFIMPORTIMAGEPATH. Keep those extracted files with the DWG or resolve the references before sharing the drawing.

Common problems and fixes
“The PDF imported, but I cannot edit it”
You may have attached it as an underlay, imported a raster-only page, created a block, or placed the objects on a locked or hidden layer. Confirm the object type, inspect layer states, and use PDFIMPORT or Import as Objects. Explode a block only on a copy and only when individual objects are necessary.

Measure a known distance, calculate the correction factor, apply SCALE, and verify a second measurement. Missing PDF units or resolution information can affect underlay scaling, while direct page import does not rely on INSUNITS.
“Everything is one huge block”
The import may have been configured to create a block. That can simplify initial movement and isolation. Explode it only after confirming that separate objects are required.
“The lines are doubled”
Possible causes include duplicate PDF paths, overlapping fills, a flattened image alongside vector geometry, or repeated imports. Isolate layers, remove unnecessary images and fills, and run OVERKILL on a duplicate drawing.
“The PDF is scanned”
Use it as an underlay for tracing, redraw the required geometry manually, or use a specialist raster-to-vector tool. AutoCAD’s native PDF workflow does not convert scanned pixels into accurate vector linework.
“The file is password-protected”
You need the correct password before attaching the PDF, and AutoCAD may request it again when the DWG is reopened. See Autodesk’s underlay guidance.
Should you use a specialist PDF-to-DWG converter?
Try AutoCAD’s built-in tools first if you already have AutoCAD and the PDF is vector-based. A specialist converter may be worthwhile for recurring batch work, many-page processing, or scanned plans, but it cannot guarantee the original DWG’s layers, dimensions, relationships, or accuracy.
