Find the tool’s data label first. RYOBI says the model number is usually in the label’s upper-left area, while the serial number is usually in the lower-right area. The model number typically begins with a letter such as P or RY; the serial number typically begins with two letters, continues with numbers, and ends with a letter. These are separate identifiers, even though they normally appear on the same label.
Use the model number when you need the correct manual, parts list, repair information, or product-specific support. Keep the serial number available when a support or service process asks for the individual tool’s identifier. Because label placement can vary by product, inspect the entire tool and check product-specific RYOBI guidance if the label is not where you expect it.

Model number and serial number: what each one identifies
Every identification task starts by separating the two numbers. They serve different purposes and should not be copied interchangeably.

| Identifier | What it identifies | Typical appearance | Typical label position | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Model number | The tool model or product variant | Usually starts with a letter such as P or RY, followed by numbers and letters | Usually the top-left area of the data label | Finding manuals, parts, and repair information |
| Serial number | The individual tool’s separate identifier | Typically starts with two letters, followed by numbers, and ends with a letter | Usually the bottom-right area of the data label | Providing the specific tool identifier for support or service |
RYOBI’s Contact guidance states: “Find your model number in the top left of the product’s data label.” The same page states: “Find your serial number in the bottom right of the product’s data label.” Treat “usually” as important: these are general positions, not a promise that every RYOBI product uses one identical label layout.

The character pattern is a reading aid, not a decoding system. The official guidance does not explain how to derive the tool’s age, manufacturing date, country of manufacture, warranty status, or other history from the letters and numbers. Do not infer those details from the serial-number format.
Where to look on the tool
Start with the data label
Look for a product data label attached directly to the tool. It may contain the model number, serial number, electrical or safety information, and other product markings. Read the label itself rather than relying on packaging, a receipt, or a remembered product name. Packaging can be separated from the tool, and a product name may not identify the exact model variant needed for a parts or manual lookup.
- Set the tool down safely and remove any removable power source before inspecting it. For a cordless tool, take out the battery; for a corded tool, disconnect the plug. Do not operate the tool while trying to read the label.
- Inspect the visible sides, base, rear housing, handle area, and other flat surfaces for a data label.
- Once you find the label, locate the model number in or near the upper-left area.
- Locate the serial number in or near the lower-right area.
- Copy each identifier exactly, preserving every letter and number in its printed order.
RYOBI’s general instruction is organized around the label, not around one universal location on the tool. A label may be on a different face of the housing than the one you first inspect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck less-obvious surfaces when necessary
If the expected areas are empty, continue around the tool rather than assuming that the number is missing. A documented example appears on RYOBI’s hedge-trimmer recall information: the model and serial identifiers are on a data label on the underside of that tool. This example demonstrates why a product-specific page can override a general expectation about where to look.
For a hedge trimmer or another long-handled tool, inspect the underside only after the tool is disconnected from power and placed so it cannot move unexpectedly. Do not remove guards, housings, or other components merely to expose a label. If the identifier is not visible without disassembly, use product-specific support instead of taking the tool apart.
How to read the model number correctly
Use the prefix as a clue
RYOBI says model numbers usually start with a letter such as P or RY, followed by a combination of numbers and letters. A leading letter is therefore a useful way to distinguish the model field from nearby specifications or warning text.
Copy the complete model string, not just the first few characters. A partial entry can point to a different product or fail to return the correct manual. Include every printed suffix, hyphen, or other character if the label shows one. The official guidance establishes the usual starting pattern, but it does not define a universal punctuation rule for every product, so reproduce what is actually printed.

Do not substitute a product name
Words such as “drill,” “blower,” or “hedge trimmer” describe a tool category; they are not a model number. Two tools in the same category can require different parts or manuals. Enter the exact model identifier from the data label when using RYOBI’s support lookup.
How to read the serial number correctly
Look for the separate identifier
The serial number normally appears in a different field from the model number. RYOBI says it typically begins with two letters, continues through a series of numbers, and ends with a letter. Use that pattern to locate the serial field in the lower-right area of the label, but verify the complete printed string before recording it.
Do not treat a serial number as a second version of the model number. The model identifies the product variant; the serial number is the separate identifier for the individual tool. If a support form asks for both, enter both fields exactly as shown.
Check characters that are easy to confuse
Small labels can make letters and numbers look alike. Compare the character you are reading with the surrounding pattern and, if possible, inspect the label again from a different angle. Do not “correct” a character because a guessed sequence looks more familiar. The safest record is a literal transcription of the label.

A practical identification workflow
Use this sequence whenever you need to identify a RYOBI tool for documentation, parts, repair, or support.
- Make the tool safe. Disconnect the power source and place the tool where you can inspect its surfaces without activating it.
- Find the data label. Search the housing and handles for the product label. Inspect the underside or another less-visible face if the usual areas do not contain it.
- Locate the model field. Start at the label’s upper-left area. Look for a string usually beginning with P, RY, or another letter prefix.
- Locate the serial field. Start at the label’s lower-right area. Look for the separate string that typically begins with two letters and ends with a letter after its numbers.
- Transcribe both strings. Copy the characters in order, including any printed punctuation or suffixes. Keep the model and serial entries on separate lines.
- Verify before submitting. Compare your transcription with the label a second time. Check the first and last characters especially carefully.
- Use the model for support lookup. Enter the model number in RYOBI’s support area to retrieve the information associated with that product.
- Keep the serial number available. If a service or support process requests the individual tool identifier, provide the serial number from the same label.
Using the model number in RYOBI support
RYOBI’s Support page instructs owners: “Enter your tool’s model number for manuals, parts, and repair info.” The model number is therefore the starting point for product documentation, not the serial number.

For manuals
Enter the complete model number in the support lookup. Confirm that the returned product description matches the tool in front of you before downloading or following a manual. If the result does not match, recheck the label and search again rather than selecting a visually similar tool.
For parts
Use the exact model result when looking for parts information. A category name or incomplete model string may lead to a different parts list. Keep your transcription beside you while comparing the support result with the physical tool.
For repair information
The model lookup also provides repair information. Service options can differ by tool, so the model result is useful before contacting a service location. If the support page indicates eligibility or a particular route, follow that product-specific instruction.
When the label location does not match the general guidance
A different label position does not automatically mean the tool is unidentified or the label is wrong. RYOBI’s general wording is qualified as “usually” and “typically,” and the hedge-trimmer recall page documents an underside label location.
Use product-specific information
Search RYOBI support or recall information for the exact tool category or model when the label is not on the expected face. Product-specific instructions can identify a location that is not obvious from the general Contact guidance.
Inspect the whole label, not just one corner
Some labels contain several blocks of text. First identify the complete label, then use the upper-left and lower-right positions as orientation clues. Do not assume that a number printed elsewhere on the housing is the model or serial identifier without confirming that it belongs to the data label.
Stop before disassembly
If the label appears to be behind a guard or inside a housing, do not remove components simply to read it. Product support or a service center can advise on the correct route. Altering the tool may create a safety problem and is unnecessary for the ordinary identification process.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Entering the serial number as the model
Symptom: The support lookup does not return the expected manual or parts information.
Correction: Return to the data label and use the field in the upper-left area for the model. The serial field is usually in the lower-right area and typically has two leading letters and a final letter.
Using only the tool category
Symptom: Several similar products appear, or the result does not match the tool’s controls or design.
Correction: Replace the category description with the complete model string printed on the label.
Copying a partial model number
Symptom: The lookup returns a related but different product.
Correction: Recopy the entire model field, including letters and any printed suffix or punctuation.

Trying to decode the serial number
Symptom: You are attempting to determine the tool’s age, manufacturing date, origin, or warranty status from the character sequence.
Correction: Record the serial number exactly, but do not assign meaning to its characters beyond the format RYOBI publishes. The official pages reviewed do not define a broader decoding method.

Before traveling to a repair location, use the model number to review the tool’s service information and confirm that the service center handles that product. RYOBI’s Service and Repair guidance notes that service-center capabilities vary by tool. Confirm availability before visiting rather than assuming that every location accepts every RYOBI product.
- Record the complete model number from the data label.
- Record the complete serial number separately.
- Use the model number in RYOBI support to review repair information.
- Check the product’s service eligibility and the capabilities of the intended service center.
- Contact or confirm with the service location before making the trip.
The identification step does not establish warranty eligibility. The reviewed RYOBI guidance does not say that a particular character pattern proves warranty coverage, age, country of manufacture, or manufacturing date. Those questions require the applicable product and service information.
How to keep a reliable record
Once you have located the label, make a durable record of both identifiers. Write the model and serial numbers on separate lines and label each line clearly. A photograph of the data label can provide a visual check later, but the written record should still preserve the exact characters and their order.
- Keep the model number and serial number in separate fields.
- Include the date you recorded them if you maintain equipment records.
- Store the record with the tool’s manual or maintenance notes.
- Recheck the original label whenever a character is uncertain.
- Do not replace an unreadable character with a guess.
This record is particularly useful when the tool is stored away from its packaging or when you need to contact support without bringing the tool to a computer.

What the published guidance does—and does not—establish
The official instructions establish a practical identification method: find the data label, read the model from the usual upper-left position, read the serial number from the usual lower-right position, and use the model number in support. They also establish that placement can be product-specific, with the underside documented for a hedge trimmer.
They do not establish a universal label location for every RYOBI product, a serial-number decoding formula, or a way to infer manufacturing or warranty details. Keeping those limits in mind prevents an otherwise correct label reading from turning into an unsupported conclusion.
