To get rid of a refrigerator smell, remove the food or spill causing it, clean the interior and removable parts, then air the appliance. Odor absorbers such as baking soda are follow-up options—not substitutes for cleaning. If a foul smell followed spoiled food or a power outage, handle questionable food safely and sanitize the refrigerator before using it again.
Start by removing the source
- Remove expired, spoiled, or questionable food. Do not taste food to decide whether it is safe; smell and appearance cannot reliably identify harmful pathogens.
- Check for leaks or residue in drawers, on shelves, around containers, and along the door gasket, where spills can linger.
- For a routine spill, wipe it promptly with hot soapy water and rinse. Use cleaners compatible with your refrigerator’s finish and follow the manufacturer’s instructions; avoid solvents, abrasives, and products that could leave a taste in food or ice.
USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) explains that spoilage bacteria can cause unpleasant odors, tastes, and textures, but pathogens generally do not change food’s smell, taste, or appearance. Some pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes, can grow at refrigerator temperatures. Keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below to protect most foods, and discard questionable food rather than using odor as a safety test. USDA FSIS: Refrigeration and Food Safety

Clean a refrigerator after a strong or persistent odor
When spoiled food has left a strong smell, clean the whole affected area rather than masking the odor. USDA FSIS gives the following procedure; also follow current bleach-label directions and the refrigerator maker’s instructions.

- Remove shelves, crispers, and ice trays. Wash them with hot water and detergent, then rinse with a sanitizing solution made with 1 tablespoon of unscented liquid chlorine bleach per gallon of water.
- Wash the refrigerator interior, door, and gasket with hot water and baking soda.
- Rinse those surfaces with the same sanitizing solution.
- Leave the door open for about 15 minutes to let air circulate before restocking.

If the smell remains after cleaning
Only after removing the source and cleaning, try one of the additional options listed by USDA FSIS. The agency does not rank these by tested effectiveness, lifespan, or cost.
- Wipe the interior with equal parts vinegar and water, then air the unit for several days.
- Leave rolled newspapers inside for several days.
- Place fresh coffee grounds or baking soda in a large, shallow container inside the refrigerator.
- Leave a vanilla-soaked cotton swab in the refrigerator for 24 hours.
- Use a commercial odor-removal product according to its maker’s instructions.
- FSIS also lists a tray of activated carbon or crushed barbecue charcoal without lighter fluid as an optional absorber.
These are alternatives, not a proven ranking of what works best. FSIS lists them in its refrigerator-odor guidance.

Keep odors from returning
- Clean spills promptly with hot soapy water and rinse.
- Check perishable foods regularly and remove items that are expired or spoiled.
- Keep an opened box of baking soda on a refrigerator shelf to help keep it smelling fresh.
- Choose cleaning products compatible with the appliance interior; some cleansers can leave a chemical taste or damage finishes.
