The easiest versatile napkin fold for a table setting is an angled pocket fold. It works with a square cloth dinner napkin and creates a neat diagonal pocket for flatware, a place card, or a lightweight printed menu.

What you’ll need
- One square cloth dinner napkin
- Optional: flatware, a place card, or a lightweight printed menu
Cotton, linen, and cotton-linen blends can all work. A 20-by-20-inch napkin is a common, practical size, but it is not mandatory. Any square napkin that is large enough to form a stable pocket and remains proportionate to your plate should work.

- Lay the napkin flat. Place it on a table with the finished side facing down if the fabric has a noticeable front and back.
- Fold it in half. Bring one side to the opposite side and smooth the crease.
- Fold it in half again. The napkin should now be a quarter of its original size, forming a smaller square.
- Position the open corners toward you. You should be able to identify the layered, open corner of the folded napkin.
- Fold the top layer diagonally. Take the top layer at the open corner and fold it across to meet the opposite corner. Press along the diagonal so it creates a clean angled flap.
- Turn the napkin over. Keep the diagonal flap in place while carefully flipping the entire napkin.
- Fold the napkin into thirds. Fold one side toward the center, then fold the other side over it. This shapes the back and creates the pocket on the front.
- Turn it back over. The diagonal pocket should now be visible on the front.
- Add the insert. Slide the forks, knife, spoon, place card, or lightweight menu into the angled pocket. Keep the insert flat and light enough that the napkin holds its shape.
How to make the fold look crisp
Press each crease with your fingers as you work. For a more structured result, prepare the napkins before setting the table by lightly starching and ironing them. A steamer can relax wrinkles, but an iron generally gives the creases more definition. Test the heat setting on an inconspicuous area of the fabric and follow the care label.

If the pocket collapses, check that the napkin is square, all folds are aligned, and the final side folds are tight enough to support the diagonal flap. A very soft or undersized napkin may produce a less stable pocket than a medium-weight square dinner napkin.
Where to place the folded napkin
For an informal table setting, place the completed fold in the center of the dinner plate or on top of a charger. This makes the diagonal design visible as soon as guests sit down. Position a place card or menu so it can be read without covering most of the pocket.
If the plate needs to remain available for food, place the napkin to the left of the forks. Depending on the meal, available space, and host’s style, a napkin may also be placed under the forks or presented in a napkin ring. No single placement is required for every table setting.

Napkin etiquette after guests sit down
The folded napkin is primarily part of the pre-meal presentation. After sitting down, diners generally unfold it and place it in their laps.
If you need to leave the table temporarily, place the napkin to the left of your place setting with any used areas concealed as much as possible. When you return, place it back in your lap. Avoid putting a used napkin on the plate unless the host or circumstances make that the only practical option.
Choosing napkins for folding

Simple alternatives for different occasions
The angled pocket is a practical everyday choice, but other folds may suit a particular event:

What should I do with the napkin during the meal?
After sitting down, unfold the napkin and place it in your lap. If you leave temporarily, place the used napkin to the left of your place setting with stains concealed as much as possible, then return it to your lap when you sit down again.
