How to Fix Sinking or Uneven Paver Blocks

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A durable repair for sinking or uneven paver blocks starts below the visible surface. Lift the affected blocks, find and correct the cause—such as washout, trapped water, weak fill, or a loose edge—then rebuild and compact the base, screed fresh bedding material to the correct level and drainage fall, reset the blocks, and refill the joints. Adding sand to a low area without repairing its support usually leaves the underlying failure in place.

A small, stable area can often be reset with hand tools. If water continues to enter, the base is broadly soft or eroded, the edge restraint has spread, or previous resets have failed, the repair needs a wider investigation and may require an experienced paving contractor.

What sinking or uneven pavers usually mean

Concrete or clay pavers are a surface system made of blocks, joint material, a bedding layer, a compacted base, and the soil beneath it. A dip in the finished surface is therefore a symptom, not a diagnosis. The bedding layer may have been displaced, but the base or subgrade is often where the movement began.

Water is a frequent contributor. A leaking downspout, irrigation overspray, poor fall, blocked drainage path, or water retained in the soil can soften support or wash fine material away. Disturbed fill, an inadequately compacted area, and a loosened edge restraint can produce similar movement. More than one condition can exist at the same time, so inspect the whole affected zone before deciding how much to remove.

Joint sand has a limited job: it fills the spaces between blocks and helps lock the surface together. It cannot replace a missing base, support a void beneath a block, or stop an active leak. If a block rocks underfoot or the low area returns after rain, treat the support and drainage problem rather than repeatedly topping up the joints.

Diagnose the low area before taking it apart

Walk the paving in dry weather and again after significant rain if possible. Use a long straightedge, a level, and a tape measure to understand the shape of the settlement rather than judging it from one block. Mark the visible low spot, but plan to include sound blocks beyond its edge so the repaired area can transition into the surrounding surface.

Inspection checklist

  • Look uphill and around the perimeter for downspouts, hose bibs, irrigation heads, ponding, or a roof discharge that directs water toward the pavers.
  • Check whether water has carried soil or fine aggregate out of a joint, edge, or crack. A hollow sound, an open void, or a soft feel at the edge can indicate washout.
  • Place a straightedge across the area and note whether the defect is one deep depression, a broad sag, or a line of displaced blocks.
  • Test the edge restraint by pressing or gently pushing the outer blocks. A spreading edge allows otherwise sound pavers to migrate.
  • Look for cracked, spalled, or badly worn blocks that should not be reinstalled.
  • Ask whether the area was excavated, backfilled, or exposed to heavy traffic after the original installation. Recently disturbed fill deserves extra scrutiny.
  • Observe whether the problem is expanding or returning after an earlier repair. Recurrence is evidence that the cause was not corrected or that the affected footprint is larger than the first patch.
Observed condition What it can indicate What to verify before relaying
One or several blocks sit lower but the surrounding base feels firm Localized bedding loss, a small void, or isolated settlement Lift the blocks and inspect the bedding and base directly; check for a nearby leak.
A broad depression with several uneven rows Weak or disturbed base, compressible fill, or widespread water retention Probe and excavate beyond the visible edge; determine whether the support remains firm after removal.
Sand or soil has washed from joints or the perimeter Surface runoff, leaking drainage, or erosion beneath the paving Trace where water enters and exits before rebuilding the base.
Outer rows have fanned outward Loose, damaged, or poorly supported edge restraint Plan to reset and secure the restraint while the blocks are removed.
The same spot sinks again after a reset Unresolved water, unstable fill, or a repair footprint that was too small Stop repeating a surface-only fix and obtain a site-specific assessment.

Tools and materials for a controlled repair

Gather everything before lifting the first block. Keeping the original pattern intact makes reinstallation faster and avoids mixing blocks from different areas.

Tool or material Use during the repair Selection notes
Paver puller or extraction tool Grips and lifts blocks from an accessible joint Useful when blocks are tight; avoid levering against a neighboring edge that could chip.
Flat screwdrivers, narrow pry bars, or joint tools Open a joint carefully when starting removal Use controlled pressure and protect block corners.
Hand tamper Compacts a small base or confined repair Appropriate where the paver system and site permit hand compaction.
Plate compactor Compacts larger rebuilt areas and seats suitable pavers Rent the correct unit when needed; use it only as directed for the specific paver type.
Screed board or straightedge Strikes the bedding layer to a consistent plane and fall Choose a straight, rigid board long enough to span the repair.
Level, string line, and tape measure Checks alignment, elevations, and drainage direction A level alone does not establish the intended fall; compare with the surrounding paving.
Rubber mallet Makes small alignment adjustments Tap lightly; do not use impact to force a block onto an unstable base.
Compatible aggregate and bedding material Rebuilds the support beneath the blocks Use the material and layer arrangement specified for the paver system and local conditions.
Joint sand or compatible polymeric joint sand Fills joints after the blocks are set Confirm compatibility with the block, joint width, climate, and manufacturer instructions.

Choose a localized reset or a broader repair

There is no universal block count or square-foot threshold that separates a do-it-yourself repair from professional work. The deciding factors are the condition of the support, the water source, the edge restraint, and whether the failure is recurring.

Localized reset is more reasonable when… Get an experienced assessment when…
The movement is limited and the surrounding pavers remain aligned. Several rows or a large area have settled, or the depression continues beyond what is visible.
The base beneath the removed blocks is firm after the failed material is taken out. The base is soft, pumping, hollow, or visibly washed out over a broad area.
You can identify and stop a small, definite source of water. Water enters from grading, a drainage system, a retaining structure, or an unknown underground source.
The edge restraint is intact or can be safely reset. The perimeter has spread, broken, or lacks a stable restraint.
The blocks can be removed without damaging adjacent work. Access, utilities, steep grades, or structural features make excavation hazardous.
The area has not repeatedly failed after earlier repairs. The same location has sunk again, indicating an unresolved cause.

Step-by-step: reset sinking or uneven paver blocks

1. Mark the repair footprint

Outline the low area with chalk or marking paint, then extend the outline into stable paving. Include enough surrounding blocks to create a clean working edge and to blend the repaired elevation with the existing surface. Mark reference lines or photograph the pattern so you know the orientation of herringbone, running bond, basket-weave, or other layouts.

Before disturbing the surface, move furniture and identify irrigation lines, lighting cables, drains, and other concealed services. A small excavation still deserves the same caution as any digging project.

2. Start at an accessible edge

Removal is easiest from an unrestrained edge or an existing joint. If every side is tight, remove a sacrificial block only if necessary and use an extraction tool rather than prying hard against neighboring corners. Work slowly; a chipped edge can prevent a tight, attractive joint when the area is rebuilt.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

3. Lift and stack blocks in installation order

As each block comes out, place it in rows, mark its location, or take a numbered photograph. Keep the finished face clean and avoid mixing blocks from different sections. This preserves the original pattern and reveals whether the problem is concentrated beneath one course or spread across the footprint.

Separate cracked, badly spalled, or permanently distorted blocks. Reuse sound blocks, but do not reinstall pieces whose damage could create a trip edge or allow water into a growing void.

4. Remove failed bedding and expose the base

Scoop out loose bedding material and any visibly contaminated or saturated material until you reach firm support. Do not leave a thin layer of unstable aggregate under a replacement layer; it will continue to compress. Keep the excavation within the marked footprint at first, then enlarge it if the soft or eroded condition continues beneath the surrounding pavers.

Inspect the exposed base for channels, pockets, roots, organic soil, disturbed fill, and signs of water movement. A dry surface on the day of repair does not rule out a drainage problem, so trace nearby discharge points and observe the fall of adjacent paving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Correct the cause before rebuilding

Redirect a downspout, repair a leaking irrigation fitting, clear a blocked drain, or correct an obvious source of runoff before placing new aggregate. If the water source is structural or cannot be isolated, pause the reset and obtain site-specific advice. Rebuilding over an active washout simply hides the failure until the next wet period.

Where an edge has spread, plan to reset or replace the restraint while the area is open. The blocks need a firm lateral boundary as well as vertical support; otherwise traffic and seasonal movement can reopen the joints.

6. Rebuild the base with suitable material

Place the specified paver-base aggregate in manageable layers and compact each layer with a hand tamper or an appropriately selected plate compactor. The required material, layer depth, moisture condition, and compaction standard depend on the paver system, soil, climate, and local requirements. Follow current manufacturer directions rather than copying a depth from an unrelated installation.

7. Screed the bedding layer

Spread the compatible bedding material over the compacted base and strike it with a straight screed board. Screed only enough area that you can cover without walking on the finished surface. Fill low places and remove ridges; do not use loose joint sand to compensate for a base that is still out of plane.

Set the bedding elevation from the neighboring pavers, door thresholds, drains, and other fixed points. Preserve the intended fall so water moves away from buildings and toward the designed drainage route.

8. Confirm the drainage fall

Roger Cook of This Old House describes a pitch of at least ⅛ inch per foot for proper drainage in the installation context of its uneven-patio guide. That is a contextual contractor recommendation, not a universal code or specification for every site. Your paver manufacturer, local requirements, accessibility constraints, and existing drainage design may call for a different arrangement.

Use a string line, straightedge, and level to compare the repaired area with adjacent paving. Avoid creating a sharp ridge at the perimeter or directing water toward a wall, doorway, foundation, or neighboring property. If the surrounding paving has no workable drainage route, solve that larger grading issue before finishing the reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Relay the blocks in the original pattern

Replace the sound blocks in the order you recorded, keeping joints consistent with the surrounding work. Begin at a stable reference edge and work across the screeded bedding without disturbing it. Align the repaired rows with neighboring joints rather than forcing a single block to hide a cumulative mismatch.

Use a rubber mallet for small adjustments. A block that rocks, sits proud, or requires heavy impact is signaling a bedding or base problem; lift it and correct the support instead of driving it down.

10. Compact only when the system allows it

Some paver systems are designed to be seated with a compactor, while certain finishes or manufacturers require protection or a different method. Follow the current instructions for the specific paver. If compaction is approved, use the recommended machine and protective pad where required, make controlled passes, and check the surface for movement or damage.

Do not compact over an incomplete pattern, exposed joints, or an unstable edge. Confirm that the repaired blocks are flush with adjacent paving and that transitions do not create a trip hazard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Refill the joints

Once the blocks are aligned and seated, sweep compatible joint sand into every joint. For polymer-containing joint sand, remove residue from the paver faces and follow the product’s current instructions for filling, watering or activation, weather conditions, and curing. Excess material left on the surface can adhere or stain, while underfilled joints leave room for movement and weed growth.

Joint products vary by block material, joint width, climate, and exposure. Use only a product approved for the system, and do not treat polymeric sand as a substitute for correcting a soft or eroded base.

Why common quick fixes fail

Adding sand on top of a low spot

Extra joint sand changes the surface appearance but does not restore the compacted support below. It can wash out, migrate into a void, or leave adjacent blocks at different elevations. Lift the blocks and rebuild the support instead.

Filling a void with loose soil

Soil, mulch, and other unconsolidated fill can compress when wet and cannot provide dependable paver support. Remove unsuitable material and use the specified aggregate and bedding arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resetting without finding the water path

A repaired surface can look perfect until the next storm or irrigation cycle. Trace downspouts, slopes, drains, and edge outlets before closing the excavation.

Repairing only the center of a spreading edge

If the perimeter can move, the center will eventually lose alignment again. Include the affected restraint and its backing in the repair plan.

Using a compactor as a leveling tool

Compaction seats a properly supported system; it does not flatten a soft base or correct an uneven bedding layer. Rebuild and screed first, then compact only as the system permits.

Checks after the repair

Inspect the surface immediately and after the first substantial rain. Confirm that:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Blocks are flush with adjacent paving and do not rock under normal foot traffic.
  • Joints are full and clean, with no residual polymeric material on the faces.
  • Water follows the intended fall instead of ponding at the repaired edge.
  • The edge restraint remains tight and the perimeter has not spread.
  • No new voids, washed joints, or soft spots appear around the excavation.

If a low spot returns, do not keep adding sand or making isolated cosmetic adjustments. Reopen the area far enough to expose the continuing failure and reassess drainage, fill, and the extent of the base repair.

Preventing another settlement

  • Keep downspouts and surface drains clear, and make sure discharge does not concentrate beside the paving.
  • Inspect irrigation heads and lines for overspray or leaks that wet the base repeatedly.
  • Maintain the edge restraint and replace damaged sections before adjacent blocks migrate.
  • Replace missing joint material with a compatible product when routine maintenance calls for it, while treating any low or soft area as a structural repair.
  • Keep heavy vehicles and concentrated loads off paving systems that were not designed for them.
  • After major storms, check for ponding, eroded joints, and movement while small defects are still easy to isolate.
  • Retain the paver pattern and installation information so a future repair can match the existing system and manufacturer requirements.

Safety and practical limits

Wear gloves, eye protection, and sturdy footwear when extracting blocks and handling aggregate. Pavers and compactors are heavy; use safe lifting technique and a second person for awkward loads. Keep children and bystanders away from open excavations and operating equipment, and verify underground utilities before digging.

Stop and seek qualified help if excavation reveals undermined foundations, a damaged utility, contaminated soil, a retaining-wall problem, or water that cannot be controlled. The objective is a stable, draining paving system—not merely a level-looking patch.
