Do not repair a missing dimension by typing a replacement value onto the sheet. First trace the discrepancy to the authoritative model, a linked-model reference, the active view, source geometry, or annotation health. In a Revit-based workflow, this order separates a display problem from a wrong model value and prevents a correction from being lost at the next link reload or export.
“Automated building plans” covers many software combinations. The commands and failure modes differ between platforms; the documented examples here use Autodesk Revit because its linked-model, view, geometry, audit, and Model Checker behavior is specifically established.

What a missing or inconsistent dimension actually indicates
A blank dimension string, a dimension that vanishes from one view, or a detail that changes between model and sheet is not one defect class. It can mean that the host model cannot resolve the reference, that the view suppresses the annotation, that the geometry is not truly parallel, or that an imported element is slightly misplaced. It can also mean the sheet was generated from an older revision than the model under review.
Separate these questions before editing:
- Which file owns the geometry? It may be the host Revit model, a linked discipline model, or a nested link inside that model.
- Which file owns the annotation? A dimension created in a linked file is not the same object as a dimension created in the host.
- Which view is being inspected? A plan, section, elevation, drafting view, perspective, and orthographic 3D view expose different references and annotation rules.
- Is the value wrong, or is the reference unavailable? Replacing a value hides the cause if the reference itself cannot be resolved.
- Which revision produced the issued sheet? A current model view and an issued PDF can legitimately differ when the sheet has not been regenerated.
The reliable remedy is therefore a trace: preserve the evidence, identify ownership, test the view context, correct source geometry where necessary, then regenerate and reconcile the output.

First response: preserve the discrepancy and identify the source of truth
Before moving an element or deleting a dimension, record the sheet number, view name, affected element or grid, dimension string, and revision. Capture the issued sheet and the current on-screen view. Note whether the discrepancy appears in one view, every view, only the host model, or only after export.
Keep the project’s agreed source of truth and revision status visible during the review. Information-exchange requirements should define what information and drawings are required, who checks them, what constitutes acceptance, and how corrections are recorded. ISO 19650-4:2022 describes decision criteria and processes for information exchanges intended to ensure the quality of a project information model or asset information model; it does not supply a universal dimension checklist for every project.
Use a short issue record with these fields:
- file and model name, including host or linked status;
- sheet, view, and view scale;
- element IDs or stable identifiers, when available;
- dimension references (faces, edges, grids, or levels);
- model revision, link revision, and export date;
- expected result and the observed result.
This record prevents a reviewer from “fixing” a sheet with a neighboring value that belongs to a different revision or discipline model.

Linked-model dimensions: the most common Revit-specific failure
Revit can display a linked model in a host view, but not every linked reference is available for host dimensions. Autodesk documents missing dimensions when references point to certain nested linked files or to cut edges. The host may show the geometry while being unable to create or maintain the requested dimension reference.
Why nested links and cut edges fail
A nested link is a linked file displayed through another linked file. Its elements do not necessarily expose the stable references that a host dimension requires. A cut edge is an edge produced by the view’s cut plane rather than a directly dimensionable face or edge in the host context. If a dimension depends on either, it can disappear or fail to display even though the line is visible.

When a dimension is absent only in a host view, test the references before changing the measured geometry. If the reference is a nested-link element or a cut edge, avoid creating that host reference where possible. Autodesk’s documented remedies are to create the necessary dimension in the host file or, for an existing file where the link relationship prevents reliable referencing, bind the link and then repair the dimensions in the resulting host geometry. Binding changes the coordination relationship, so use it only under the project’s model-management rules and retain a controlled copy of the original link setup.
Preferred workflow for ordinary linked-model dimensions
- Open the linked model that owns the geometry. Identify the wall, grid, opening, or other element there rather than selecting only its display in the host.
- Create the dimension in the linked model where practical. The dimension then references native elements in the file that owns them.
- Display that linked view in the host. Use the host’s linked-view settings so the coordinated view is visible without recreating the annotation against fragile host references.
- Use host dimensions only when the deliverable requires them. If a host dimension must reference a linked element, preserve the referenced element instead of deleting and replacing it, and avoid cut-edge references that are unavailable in the host.
- Reload and recheck after link revisions. A geometry change or replacement can invalidate an association even when the new element appears visually identical.
This approach distinguishes ownership: the linked file carries dimensions about its own geometry, while the host carries dimensions that genuinely belong to the host’s coordination or documentation scope.
View context: why the Measure tool is unavailable
If the temporary measurement command is grayed out, check the active view before repairing anything. Autodesk states that Revit’s temporary measurement tool is disabled in 3D views. This is a view limitation, not evidence that the model has no measurable distance.
Use a 2D view for temporary measurement
Switch to a plan, section, elevation, or other 2D view aligned with the elements. Temporary measurements can then be used to inspect a distance without committing a permanent annotation. Confirm that the view actually cuts or projects the elements you intend to compare; a 2D view that does not expose the relevant faces can still produce an apparently missing reference.
Dimension in an orthographic 3D view
When a 3D context is necessary, set a workplane and create an aligned dimension in a 3D orthographic view. This is a permanent annotation workflow, not the disabled temporary measurement command. The workplane must correspond to the geometry being documented, and the resulting dimension should be checked in the intended sheet view.

Geometry that looks parallel but is not
Revit can refuse to create a dimension between lines that appear parallel when they are even slightly off axis. Autodesk identifies several causes: manual placement, snapping, and imported CAD data can introduce a small angular difference that is difficult to see at normal zoom.
Test the geometry before forcing the dimension
- Select each candidate line or edge and inspect its alignment relative to the project axes or the other element.
- Zoom in and compare endpoints, joins, and snaps; a tiny rotation at one end can prevent a parallel-line dimension.
- Determine whether the element is native Revit geometry or an import. Imported lines often retain the source file’s small angular errors.
- Correct the geometry at its source rather than masking the problem with a text override.
For imported CAD data, Autodesk advises correcting the geometry in the original software and then re-importing it. Re-importing a corrected source is more reliable than repeatedly nudging imported lines in Revit, because a future reload can restore the original misalignment.
After correction, recreate or re-associate the dimension and inspect adjacent details. A source change can affect joins, hosted elements, and other references that were built on the original geometry.
When dimensions, text, or tags disappear unexpectedly
A disappearing annotation can be a view-visibility issue, a broken reference, or a model-health issue. Check the affected view’s annotation state and confirm that the dimension, text, or tag is not hidden, filtered, outside the crop region, or dependent on a changed reference. Then compare the same element in another approved view to determine whether the problem is view-specific.

Autodesk recommends periodically auditing a Revit model when dimensions, text, or tags disappear or behave unexpectedly. Treat an audit as a maintenance step: run it under the project’s file-control procedure, reopen the model, and inspect the affected views. An audit is not a guarantee that every annotation problem is fixed. You still need to verify the corrected annotation in the actual issued view and sheet.
A repeatable troubleshooting procedure
Use the following sequence for each discrepancy. Stop at the first step that identifies the cause, but complete the final reconciliation after any correction.
- Preserve the evidence. Record sheet, view, element, dimension text, revision, and export date. Save or reference the issued output before making changes.
- Identify ownership. Determine whether the geometry and annotation belong to the host, a linked model, or a nested link. Confirm the model revision that should control the decision.
- Test linked references. If the problem exists only in the host, check for nested-link or cut-edge references. Create the dimension in the owning linked model where practical; use a host dimension only with stable, available references. Consider binding an existing link only when the project’s coordination rules permit it.
- Check the view. If the Measure command is unavailable, leave the 3D view for a 2D temporary measurement. For a permanent 3D annotation, set a workplane and use an orthographic view.
- Check geometry. Test whether apparently parallel lines are slightly misaligned. Correct native geometry at its source; correct imported CAD in the original software and re-import.
- Check annotation and model health. Review visibility and reference state, then audit the model when dimensions, text, or tags disappear or behave unpredictably. Inspect the affected views after the audit.
- Regenerate and reconcile. Reload the relevant links, regenerate or re-export the affected views and sheets, and compare them with the authoritative model and project requirements. Record unresolved differences for the responsible discipline instead of estimating a replacement value.
Choosing the corrective path
Different fixes address different failure conditions. Use the comparison below to avoid applying a view fix to a source-geometry problem or a model QA tool to a sheet-annotation problem.
| Observed condition | Primary question | Corrective path | What to verify afterward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dimension missing only in a host view | Does the reference come from a nested link or cut edge? | Create the dimension in the linked model where practical; otherwise use an available host reference or bind the link under project controls. | Reload the link and confirm the dimension survives the next revision. |
| Host dimension references a linked element | Has the referenced element been replaced or moved? | Keep the linked element ID stable and avoid unavailable cut-edge references. | Check the association after link reload and geometry changes. |
| Temporary Measure command is grayed out | Is the active view 3D? | Use a 2D view for temporary measurement, or set a workplane and create a dimension in a 3D orthographic view. | Confirm the permanent annotation appears in the approved sheet view. |
| Parallel-looking elements cannot be dimensioned | Are they slightly off axis? | Correct source geometry; for imported CAD, fix the original file and re-import. | Recreate the dimension and inspect joins and dependent details. |
| Dimensions, text, or tags vanish or shift | Is the issue view-specific or broader model health? | Check annotation visibility and run a controlled model audit. | Inspect the affected view and issued output; an audit alone is not proof of completeness. |
| Repeated requirements need consistent checking | Which project rules can be tested automatically? | Configure appropriate Autodesk Model Checker checksets and review the report findings in the model. | Confirm the checkset matches the project deliverable and that version/API compatibility is valid. |
Model QA with Autodesk Model Checker
Autodesk Model Checker can test Revit models against BIM requirements and produce reports using prebuilt or customized checksets. It is useful for repeatable model rules, such as whether required data or modeled conditions are present. Autodesk describes it as available to licensed Revit users without a separate purchase.
Do not treat a Model Checker report as proof that every sheet annotation is complete. The cited Autodesk material describes model checks and reporting; it does not guarantee that every dimension, tag, text note, or exported sheet is correct. Pair automated checks with view-by-view and sheet-by-sheet review at the project’s information-exchange gates.

Version and API compatibility
| Model Checker release context | Revit versions covered | API status described by Autodesk |
|---|---|---|
| Version 10.0, released with Revit 2026 | Revit 2026 | The API is no longer supported. |
| Version 9.2 | Revit 2025, 2024, 2023, and 2022 | Provides the API for those versions. |
Check this compatibility before building an integration or depending on automated execution. A checkset that cannot run against the project’s Revit version is a configuration problem, not evidence that the model passed.
Use information-exchange gates, not just model checks
ISO 19650-4:2022 is a framework for information-exchange processes and decision criteria. Apply it by defining, at each project milestone, the required information and drawings, the responsible checker, acceptance criteria, and the correction record. Then select Model Checker rules and manual sheet reviews that implement those project decisions.
For dimension consistency, a gate might require confirmation that:
- the issued sheet is generated from the approved model revision;
- linked-model dimensions are created in the owning model or use stable host references;
- critical dimensions are visible in the designated views;
- imported or manually placed geometry has been checked for off-axis errors;
- automated model-rule reports have been reviewed alongside the actual sheets;
- unresolved discrepancies have an owner and recorded disposition.
These are project controls, not a universal checklist mandated by the standard. Adapt them to the information requirements and acceptance criteria agreed by the project team.
Final reconciliation before issuing plans
After a source, link, view, geometry, or annotation correction, reload the affected links and regenerate the relevant views and sheets. Compare the output with the authoritative model and the project’s exchange requirements. Check the dimension string, its witness lines, the referenced elements, and the surrounding detail at the printed or exported scale.
Review both the corrected location and nearby annotations. A changed wall, opening, grid, or imported line can invalidate dimensions that were not part of the original complaint. If the value still differs from the expected result, return the issue to the discipline that owns the geometry instead of copying a value from an adjacent dimension.
For paper review, an architectural scale ruler can help verify a printed drawing’s graphic scale, but it cannot detect a missing model dimension or repair an inconsistent reference. Model and sheet checks remain necessary.
