How to Fix Kitchen Cabinet Doors That Hit Walls or Each Other

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most cabinet-door collisions are corrected by tightening the hinges and making small side-to-side adjustments. The hinge’s lateral screw changes the clearance between adjoining doors or between a door and a wall; height adjustment levels a sagging door, and depth adjustment brings a door flush with the cabinet. If the screws run out of travel, check the hinge type, overlay and cabinet squareness before buying replacement hardware.

Identify where the interference starts

Open and close the affected door slowly while watching the hinge side, the top and bottom corners, and the back edge. Do not force a door past a neighboring door or wall: repeated impact can chip the finish, loosen hinge screws and deform the hinge plate.

Symptom Most likely cause First correction
Two doors touch at their meeting edges Lateral (side-to-side) alignment is off, or the adjoining gap is too narrow Use the side adjustment screw in small increments
A door strikes a wall, filler or appliance Insufficient lateral clearance, incorrect overlay or an out-of-square cabinet run Move the door away with the side screw, then verify hinge geometry and squareness
The latch-side corner is low or high Door height has shifted or the cabinet-side mounting screws are loose Support the door, loosen the mounting screws, slide the door vertically and retighten
The back edge catches, or the front sits proud Depth setting is wrong, or the cabinet box is not square Use the depth screw; re-square or shim the cabinet if adjustment is insufficient
The gap is wider at one end The door is twisted relative to the cabinet, or one hinge is set differently Make a small correction at one hinge, then recheck the whole gap

An adjoining-door gap greater than 1/8 inch is identified as a problem in one Arostokraft installation guide. Treat that figure as that guide’s example, not a universal industry tolerance; door style, overlay and hardware determine the finished clearance.

Prepare the work safely

  • Empty the cabinet so contents cannot fall while you work.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver that fits the hinge screws exactly. A poor-fitting bit can strip the head and make later adjustment or removal difficult.
  • Have a stable work surface ready if a door must be removed. Support a heavy door with another person or a temporary support rather than allowing its weight to hang from one hinge.
  • Protect the finish with a clean pad. Qwikkit cautions that working with hinges on a soft surface such as carpet can damage a door, so use a firm, clean surface instead.
  • Keep track of which hinge came from which position if you remove more than one; the existing screw holes and plate positions are useful references.

What each concealed-hinge adjustment does

Most modern concealed hinges have separate movements. The screw locations vary by manufacturer, but the functions are consistent enough to identify by observing the door as you turn a screw.

Adjustment Movement Use it when How to work
Side-to-side (lateral) Shifts the door left or right across the cabinet face Doors touch each other, a door hits a wall, or a reveal is uneven from side to side Turn about a quarter turn, close gently and inspect the gap. Adjust both hinges together for a parallel move; use one hinge for a slight twist correction.
Height (vertical) Moves the door up or down on the cabinet The door sags, sits high against a neighbor, or the top and bottom reveals do not line up Support the door, loosen the cabinet-side mounting screws, slide vertically and retighten evenly.
Depth (in-and-out) Moves the door toward or away from the cabinet box The back edge rubs, the door sits proud, or it will not sit flush when closed Make a small turn, close the door without force and check the face and back edge.

Adjustments interact. Moving a door laterally can change a reveal at the top and bottom; changing height can expose a different part of the neighboring door. Make one change at a time and inspect the result before making the next.

Step-by-step: align a door that hits another door or a wall

  1. Inspect and tighten first. With the door open, check every hinge and mounting screw. Tighten visibly loose screws without overtightening. KraftMaid’s care guidance notes that hinge screws can loosen over time through normal use, so this is the first correction even when the door appears only slightly out of line.
  2. Mark the starting position. Put a small removable pencil mark on the hinge or take a photo of the original screw position. This gives you a reference if a change moves the door the wrong way.
  3. Find the lateral screw. On a common concealed hinge, the side adjustment screw is on the hinge arm and changes the door’s left-right position. Turn it roughly one-quarter turn, close the door gently and observe the clearance. If the gap changed in the wrong direction, reverse the turn rather than continuing.
  4. Move the door in parallel when the whole reveal is wrong. Adjust the upper and lower hinges by the same small amount. Check the top, middle and bottom of the gap after each pair of turns. A wall strike usually needs the door shifted toward the cabinet’s open side, away from the wall or filler.
  5. Correct a twist with one hinge. If the top clears but the bottom touches, or vice versa, leave the hinge that is already aligned largely alone and make a slight lateral correction at the hinge nearest the problem corner. Close the door after each change; a large turn at one hinge can twist the door and create a new collision.
  6. Level the door if its height is the issue. If the door is low or high relative to its neighbor, support its weight. Loosen the cabinet-side mounting screws just enough for movement, slide the door up or down, then retighten both screws evenly. Recheck the lateral gap after changing height.
  7. Set the depth. If the back edge catches the cabinet, wall or adjoining door, or the front face sits proud of the cabinet, use the depth screw to move the door in or out. Work in small increments and test the closed position each time.
  8. Test the complete swing. Open the door to its normal stopping point, close it slowly and check the full path, not just the last inch. Confirm that handles, fillers, adjacent doors and the wall all remain clear.

When the door hits a wall, filler or appliance

Start with lateral clearance. A door that swings into a nearby wall normally needs to move toward the cabinet opening, but the amount available depends on the hinge overlay and the width of the stile or filler. Adjust both hinges in matching small turns, then test the opening angle again.

If the hinge reaches the end of its lateral travel before the door clears, stop turning. Confirm that the hinge is the correct overlay and type for that cabinet. Full-overlay hinges place the door farther over the cabinet sides than partial-overlay hinges; inset doors sit inside the opening and use different geometry. A hinge intended for one arrangement can leave too little wall clearance even when it fits the cup hole.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

Also inspect the cabinet run. A wall cabinet that is twisted or not square can aim the door toward the wall. A care guide from Arostokraft identifies shimming and re-squaring as remedies for installation-related crookedness. Correct the box or its mounting before chasing the problem with extreme hinge settings.

When two adjoining doors hit each other

Look at the meeting gap with both doors closed. If the gap is narrow along its entire height, shift one door laterally. Adjusting both doors by half the required movement can preserve the visual centerline, but make changes one door at a time so you can see which hinge is responsible.

If the gap is acceptable at the top but closes at the bottom, the door is likely twisted or one hinge is out of alignment. Use a small correction at the hinge nearest the tight corner. If one door is consistently higher or lower, correct height first, then repeat the lateral check.

Do not use the depth screw to create a side gap. Depth changes how far the door projects from the cabinet; it will not reliably cure two edges that collide in the same plane.

Fix a door that will not sit flush

Close the door without pressing on it and inspect the face against neighboring doors. A door that stands proud at the latch side may have its depth setting too far out, a loose mounting screw or a hinge arm that is not seated. Tighten loose hardware, then turn the depth screw slightly toward the cabinet and retest.

If only one corner is proud, use a small adjustment at the nearest hinge rather than moving every hinge equally. Check that the cabinet contents, shelf pins or a warped shelf are not stopping the door from closing; hinge adjustment cannot overcome an obstruction inside the box.

A door that is flush at the front but rubs at the back edge may need the opposite depth correction. Move it a little, close it gently and inspect the reveal around the entire perimeter after each change.

Check overlay and cabinet construction before replacing parts

Configuration What it means for clearance What to verify
Full overlay The door covers nearly all of the cabinet side, leaving a small reveal between adjacent doors Hinge overlay rating, door thickness and the wall-side filler width
Partial overlay Two doors share a cabinet partition with a larger visible frame reveal Correct overlay and the spacing required by the center stile
Inset The door sits inside the cabinet opening Opening dimensions, hinge cup position and depth clearance inside the face frame
Framed cabinet Hinges attach in relation to a face frame that can vary in width and position Frame thickness, mounting-plate position and whether the frame is square
Frameless cabinet Hinges mount directly to the cabinet side, so side-panel position controls the reveal Panel thickness, mounting-plate spacing and the cabinet box’s squareness

These categories are not interchangeable. The same cup-hole pattern can accept hinges with different overlay arms or opening angles. Compare the existing hinge with the replacement specification before ordering.

Re-square or shim the cabinet when hinges cannot compensate

Open the doors and compare the cabinet’s diagonals, face-frame corners and side gaps. A box that is racked can make one door appear permanently twisted. If the cabinet is wall-mounted, check that its mounting screws have not pulled one corner out of line.

  • Use appropriate shims behind the cabinet at low or unsupported points; keep the cabinet supported while doing so.
  • Bring the box back to square, retighten the mounting hardware and then perform the hinge adjustments again.
  • Do not use a hinge screw as a structural substitute for a missing shim or a loose cabinet connection.

Re-squaring is especially important when several doors in the same run show the same diagonal error. Adjusting each door independently can hide the symptom while leaving the cabinet under stress.

Replace a damaged or unsuitable hinge

Replacement is appropriate when a hinge is bent, its screw holes no longer hold, its adjustment range is exhausted, or the existing hinge is the wrong geometry. Replace it with a matching hinge rather than choosing one that merely looks similar.

  • Overlay: full, partial or inset, measured against the cabinet and neighboring doors.
  • Cup-hole pattern: cup diameter, setback and screw-hole arrangement.
  • Mounting-plate spacing: cabinet-side hole pattern and plate height.
  • Opening angle: the angle required for the door to clear a wall, filler or appliance.
  • Hinge count: use the same number and place them at the original positions unless the cabinet maker specifies otherwise.

Before removing a door, support it on a stable surface and have assistance for a wide or solid door. Transfer one hinge at a time when practical so the original locations remain visible. After installation, set height, side-to-side and depth in that order, then test the entire swing.

Add rubber bumpers after alignment

Self-adhesive rubber cabinet-door bumpers cushion the final contact and protect finished surfaces from repeated impact. Place them on the two corners opposite the hinges, on a clean, dry surface. They should touch the cabinet frame at the same time when the door is closed.

Bumpers are not a substitute for clearance. They cannot correct a door that hits a wall, and stacking thick bumpers can hold a door proud of the cabinet. Clean the mounting area, allow the adhesive to bond and replace bumpers that have compressed, peeled or collected dust.

Troubleshooting after the first adjustment

What you see after adjusting Likely reason Next action
The gap changes at one hinge but not the other The second hinge is loose, seized or not the same type Tighten and inspect the second hinge; compare both hinges before further turning
The door moves but springs back A mounting screw is not clamping, or the cabinet-side material is damaged Stop stressing the hinge; repair the screw hole or mounting surface
One adjustment fixes one corner and creates another collision The door is twisted or the cabinet is out of square Use a small single-hinge correction, then check the cabinet box and consider shimming
There is still no wall clearance at maximum adjustment Wrong overlay, insufficient filler or unsuitable opening angle Verify hinge geometry and cabinet layout before replacement
The door rubs only when fully opened Opening angle or a nearby wall/appliance is limiting the swing Check the hinge’s opening-angle specification and the physical stop
Screw head begins to strip Incorrect driver size or excessive force Stop, use the correct Phillips bit and replace damaged fasteners if necessary

When to stop and call a cabinet professional

Get help when a heavy door cannot be safely supported, the cabinet is pulling away from the wall, screw holes are crumbling, the face frame is split, or several cabinets are out of square. A professional can stabilize the cabinet, repair damaged mounting material and select a hinge whose overlay and opening angle suit the layout. Stop using a door that repeatedly strikes a wall or neighboring door until the cause is corrected; continued impact can turn a minor alignment issue into finish and structural damage.
